Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CoCrFeNiMo high entropy alloy, layered double hydroxide, OER catalyst, seawater oxidation, surface modification
Electrolysis of seawater is a promising technique to desalinate seawater and produce high-purity hydrogen production for freshwater and renewable energy, respectively. For the application of seawater electrolysis technique on a large scale, simplicity of manufacture method, repeatability of catalyst products, and stable product quality is generally required in the industry. In this work, a facile, one-step, and metal salt-free fabrication method was developed for the seawater-oxygen-evolution-active catalysts composed of CoCrFeNiMo layered double hydroxide array self-supported on CoCrFeNiMo high entropy alloy substrate. The obtained catalysts show improved performance for oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline artificial seawater solution. The best-performing sample delivered the current densities of 10, 50, and 100 mA cm−2 at low overpotentials of 260.1, 294.3, and 308.4 mV, respectively. In addition, high stability is also achieved since no degradation was observed over the chronoampe... [more]

Determination of the Dominating Coalescence Pathways in Double Emulsion Formulations by Use of Microfluidic Emulsions
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: microfluidics, multiple emulsion, O–O coalescence, W1–W1 coalescence, W1–W2 coalescence
In water-in-oil-in-water (W1/O/W2) double emulsions several irreversible instability phenomena lead to changes. Besides diffusive processes, coalescence of droplets is the main cause of structural changes. In double emulsions, inner droplets can coalesce with each other (W1−W1 coalescence), inner droplets can be released via coalescence (W1−W2 coalescence) and oil droplets can coalesce with each other (O−O coalescence). Which of the coalescence pathways contributes most to the failure of the double emulsion structure cannot be determined by common measurement techniques. With monodisperse double emulsions produced with microfluidic techniques, each coalescence path can be observed and quantified simultaneously. By comparing the occurrence of all possible coalescence events, different hydrophilic surfactants in combination with PGPR are evaluated and discussed with regard to their applicability in double emulsion formulations. When variating the hydrophilic surfactant, the stability aga... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ammonia oxidation reaction, NiCuOOH-NF electrode, petal-like cluster structures, sonochemical method, surface reconstruction
Direct electrochemical oxidation, as an economical and efficient method, has recently received increasing attention for ammonia-nitrogen wastewater treatment. Developing a low-cost, efficient catalytic electrode is the key to solve the problem of sluggish ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) kinetics. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) Ni foam electrode coated with NiCuOOH petal-like cluster structures was prepared using a simple sonochemical method combined with a surface electrochemical reconstruction strategy. This structure has a large surface area and abundant NiCuOOH active sites, giving a good premise for extraordinary electrocatalytic activity of AOR. The results show that the maximum current density for AOR reaches 97.8 mA cm−2 at 0.60 V vs. saturated calomel electrode (SCE). Additionally, 96.53% of NH4+-N removal efficiency and 63.12% of TN removal efficiency were acquired in the electrolysis system based on the NiCuOOH-NF electrode, as well as a good stability for at least... Interpretation Method for Lost Gas in Deep Coalbed and Its Application
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adsorbed and free gas ratio, coalbed methane, free gas, lost gas, time of loss, USBM method
The gas loss time during the deep coalbed coring process is long. The measured desorption curve does not meet the application conditions for the classical United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) method. However, the industry still lacks a reliable interpretation method, which affects identifying deep coalbed methane reserves and optimizing sweet spots. (Method) The classical double-porosity and double-permeability theoretical model was adopted, and the influence of reservoir permeability, water saturation, and temperature on gas output in the coalbed desorption process was considered. Based on the measured field desorption data of the P1 sample of the No. 8 coal in the Benxi Formation on the eastern margin of Ordos, the entire process for the deep coalbed gas content test was numerically simulated. (Results) The simulation results show that the lost gas in the P1 sample accounts for 24.7% of the total gas, reaching 8.64 m3/t, including 18.81% of loss in wellbore lifting and 5.88% of loss... Review on the Mechanism of CO2 Storage and Enhanced Gas Recovery in Carbonate Sour Gas Reservoir
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 storage, enhanced gas recovery, phase, sour gas reservoir, water–rock reaction
Carbonate gas reservoirs in the Sichuan Basin have many complex characteristics, such as wide distribution, strong heterogeneity, high temperature, high pressure, high H2S and CO2 content and an active edge or bottom water. In the late stage of exploitation of carbonate sour gas reservoirs, the underground depleted reservoirs can provide a broad and favorable space for CO2 storage. If CO2 is injected into the depleted carbonate sour reservoirs for storage, it will help to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality, and the CO2 stored underground can perform as “cushion gas” to prevent the advance of edge or bottom water, to achieve the purpose of enhanced natural gas recovery. Injecting CO2 into low permeability reservoirs for oil displacement has become an important means to enhance oil recovery (EOR). However, the mechanism of EOR by injecting CO2 into carbonate sour gas reservoirs is not clear and the related fundamental research and field application technology are still in the explorat... Optimisation of an Integrated System: Combined Heat and Power Plant with CO2 Capture and Solar Thermal Energy
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, combined heat and power, parabolic-trough collector, solar energy
This paper aims to evaluate different design configurations of a combined heat and power (CHP) plant with post-combustion CO2 capture. Three cases are involved in this study: case 1 consists of three trains and each train has a configuration of one gas turbine with a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG); case 2 consists of three trains and one steam turbine; and case 3 consists of only two trains. The third case presented the highest CHP efficiency of 72.86% with 511.8 MW net power generation. After selecting the optimum configuration, a parabolic-trough collector (PTC) was incorporated to generate additional saturated steam at 3.5 bar for the capture plant, adding greater flexibility to the CHP because more steam was available. In addition, the efficiency of the cycle increased from 72.86% to 80.18%. Although case 2 presented lower efficiency than case 3, it has a steam turbine which brings the possibility of increasing the amount of electricity instead of steam production. When the P... [more]

Preliminary Study on the Thermal Behavior and Chemical-Physical Characteristics of Woody Biomass as Solid Biofuels
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, solid biofuel analysis, thermochemical process, thermogravimetric analysis, woody thermal degradation
The chemical composition of woody biomass directly influences its thermal degradation and, subsequently, the selection of processes and technologies used for its conversion into energy or value-added products. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the thermal behavior and chemical-physical characteristics of three different woody biomass species (hardwood, softwood and chemically-treated wood) using thermogravimetric and characterization analysis based on ISO 16948, ISO 18125 and ISO 18122 methods. The main findings show that the most significant trend of mass loss, around 70%, in the thermal degradation of the different species of woody biomass occurred between 150 °C and 500 °C and that the residual mass at 650 °C was between 13% and 24%. Although the three species of woody biomass showed a high average energy content (19.60 MJ/kg), softwood samples had a more stable thermal degradation than hardwoods and chemically-treated woods.

Liquid Loading of Horizontal Gas Wells in Changbei Gas Field
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Changbei gas field, horizontal gas well, liquid loading, water source analysis
The Changbei gas field, which initially exhibited high gas-production performance, is dominated by large-displacement horizontal wells. With the decrease in reservoir pressure, the liquid loading in the gas well is currently severe, and production has been rapidly decreasing. Thus, recognizing the gas-well liquid loading to maintain stable gas-well production is necessary. A method was established to identify the water source of the liquid loading in the Changbei gas field. First, formation water and condensate water were identified based on the mineralization of the recovered water and the mass concentration of Cl− and K+ + Na+, and then the condensate content of the water produced in the gas well was qualitatively evaluated. The water−gas ratio curve for the gas well was plotted to determine whether the produced water was edge-bottom water, pore water, or condensate. Then a method was established to distinguish the start time of liquid loading in the gas well using a curve depicting... [more]

The accurate determination of the coal slime filter cake pore structure has always been a problem in the field of solid−liquid separation. An innovative measurement method for the pore structure of filter cake after filtration dehydration of coal slime water, including the preparation of coal slime filter cake, the solidification of the filter cake, and the preparation and measurement of test filter cake, was established in this paper. Epoxy resin and curing agent can ensure the strength of the filter cake, and red colorant can realize the accurate separation of coal particles and pores. The most suitable perfusate consists of epoxy resin, red colorant, and curing reagent, and the optimal ratio is 12:3:5. The application of the method to the study of the effect of filtration time on the coal slime filter cake pores shows that the modified method is effective. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (AVOA), cascaded controller, load frequency control, renewable energy sources, two-area system
Power systems have recently faced significant challenges due to the increased penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) such as frequency deviation due to fluctuations, unpredictable nature, and uncertainty of this RES. In this paper, a cascaded controller called (1+PD)-PID is proposed to reduce the influence of RES uncertainties on the system and to maintain the system’s reliability during fluctuations. The proposed controller is a combination of (1+PD) and PID controllers in order. The output signal of the (1+PD) controller along with the frequency deviation and the power difference between adjacent areas are used as inputs to the PID controller to create the load reference signal. The parameters of the suggested controller are optimally tuned using the African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (AVOA) to ensure the best performance of the controller. A two-area interconnected system with non-reheat thermal power units combined with RES such as solar and wind energy is modeled using... [more]

Investigation of the Vertical Propagation Pattern of the 3D Hydraulic Fracture under the Influence of Interlayer Heterogeneity
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: finite element method, HF vertical propagation, hydraulic fracturing, interlayer heterogeneity, thin interlayers
The low permeability and thinly interbedded reservoirs have poor physical properties and strong interbedded heterogeneity, and it is difficult to control the hydraulic fracture (HF) height and width during hydraulic fracturing, which affects the effect of HF penetration and sand addition. In this work, a three-dimensional fluid−solid fully coupled HF propagation model is established to simulate the influence of interlayer heterogeneity on vertical HF height and HF width, and the relationship between HF length and HF width under different treatment parameters is further studied. The results show that, in thin interbedded strata, the high interlayer stress contrast, high tensile strength, and low Young’s modulus will inhibit the vertical propagation of HFs. The interlayer heterogeneity results in the vertical wavy distribution of HF width. Under the high interlayer stress contrast, Young’s modulus, and tensile strength, the HF width profile becomes narrow and the variation amplitude decr... [more]

The Mechanism Research of Low-Frequency Pressure Oscillation in the Feeding Pipe of Cryogenic Rocket Propulsion System
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: curvature estimation, heat transfer, low-frequency oscillation, mass transfer, oxygen jet condensation
In the propulsion system of cryogenic liquid rockets, low-frequency pressure oscillation is a long-standing issue occurring in its feeding pipe, and is not conducive to the normal operation of the rocket. Its mechanism and excitation process are not very clear due to the limitation of the existing numerical method and the difficulty of the real dynamic experiment. Inspired by the periodic suck-back flow phenomenon of steam condensation, the fluctuation of the two-phase interface might be the crucial factor to initiate the low-frequency pressure oscillation. To simulate this interfacial characteristic of cryogenic propellant, a novel numerical model is proposed to predict the mass transfer rate weighted by the interfacial curvature. Aiming at the oxygen jet condensation simulation, the low-frequency pressure oscillation phenomenon is obtained successfully with the excitation frequency of 10.6 Hz, consistent with the natural frequency of the engine test run. It is conducted so the low-fr... [more]

Distribution Characteristics and Cause Analysis of Casing Deformation during Hydraulic Fracturing of Shale Gas Wells
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: casing deformation, fault slippage, horizontal well, hydraulic fracturing, shale
The distribution characteristics and causes of casing deformation during hydraulic fracturing were investigated. Finite element models of a casing−cement sheath-formation assembly, considering a multi-stage fracturing process, were established. The axial displacement law of formation during multi-stage fracturing was analyzed. Furthermore, considering the existence of faults, the mechanism of casing deformation caused by fault slippage due to axial displacement was analyzed. Finally, the influence of fault parameters, as well as the casing’s geometry and mechanical parameters, on casing deformation were clarified. The results show that the casing deformation point is densely located near landing point A and sparsely located near toe point C. The entry of high-pressure fracturing fluid into the formation would reduce the effective stress of the formation and could even change it from compression to tension, which would mean that the formation in the fractured section would be stretched... February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: limiting current, macroscopic modeling, mass transport losses, porous transport layer, proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer, two-phase mass transport
Proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs) coupled with renewable energy resources are considered to be a key technology for producing green hydrogen. However, the high current density PEMWE operation features remarkable voltage losses. A significant part of these losses is due to the mass transport resistance in the PEMWE. Even though the importance of mass transport resistance is widely recognized, it is still poorly understood. Currently, the two-phase transport through the anode porous transport layer (PTL) and catalyst layer is considered to be the main cause of the mass transport losses. In this work, a dynamic macroscopic mathematical model, coupling electrochemical reaction with mass transport through the PTL and flow channels, has been developed to study the two-phase flow in the PTL and mass transport losses of a PEMWE. The influence of the current density, inlet water flow rate, PTL structural parameters, and capillary pressure curve was evaluated. The existence o... [more]

Rainfall infiltration is one of the main triggers of inner dump slope failure in the process of mining coal. Changes in water content throughout the process of rainfall infiltration have rarely been studied. The reductions in soil strength due to water migration have seldomly been considered in the existing analytical solution of the safety factor (F.S) for unsaturated inner dump slopes in an open-pit mine. In this work, a new mechanical model was developed by improving the conventional analytical solutions of F.S for unsaturated inner dump slopes to accommodate water-induced degradation in the mechanical strength of waste material. Parameter analysis was carried out via a case study of the Shengli #1 open-pit coalmine. Keywords: high and low salinity, hydrolysis rate, partition coefficients, single-well tracer test
Determining residual oil saturation by the single-well chemical tracer test (SWCTT) is of key importance for assessing the potential of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and developing EOR pilot projects. However, the test trials conducted since the first injections of tracer compositions until now have not resulted in a detailed analysis of the selection of candidates for single-well tracers and their limits of applicability in various reservoir conditions. The purpose of this study was to consider the influence of the structure on the kinetic and thermodynamic components of tracers to assess their application’s operating intervals. It is shown that the rate of single-phase and two-phase hydrolysis of the primary partitioning tracer makes it possible to predict the shut-in time by calculating when the tracer is injected at the reservoir temperature.
