Study on the Flow Pattern and Transition Criterion of Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Flow in the Annular of Shale Gas Fractured Horizontal Wells
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: annulus pipe, flow pattern transition, gas-liquid two-phase flow, slug flow
Improving the accuracy of pressure prediction in the wellbore annular is of great importance for the design in oil and gas production. However, due to the existence of double-layer liquid membrane and the lack of relevant experiments, the existing correlations fail to the field application. In this study, a new model of flow pattern transition in inclined annulus pipe is proposed by using a mechanistic approach to classify the flow patterns. Firstly, a gas-liquid two-phase flow experiment in annulus pipe was carried out in a pipe with an outer diameter of 73.02 mm and an inner diameter of 121.36 mm, and then the influence of inclined angle on the transition boundary of flow pattern is discussed. Finally, a hydrodynamic transition criterion for the flow pattern model of inclined annulus pipe is established and verified in detail. The experimental results show that bubble flow, slug flow, churn flow and annular flow were observed under different inclination angles, and the results indica... [more]

Mechanics Principle and Implementation Technology of Surrounding Rock Pressure Release in Gob-Side Entry Retaining by Roof Cutting
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gob-side entry, pressure relief, roof cutting, surrounding rock
Improving coal resource mining rates has long been a focus of coal industry research. The gob-side entry retaining by roof cutting (GERRC) is a new coal mining technology that has gained popularity in China due to its high mining rate and safety. Based on the GERRC technology, the precise technical procedure is elaborated, and the fundamental idea of pressure relief is explored through creating a structural mechanics model of the surrounding rock in this paper. The results of mechanical analysis show that the primary mechanism of roof pressure release is to weaken the integrity of the roof, thereby reducing the ultimate bending moment of the rock stratum. In addition, an additional strategy for pressure release is suggested in this research, involving the weakening of the roof rock by the creation of dense pressure-released holes. The results of the engineering field experimentation demonstrate that the dense pressure-released holes can completely replace the conventional blasting tech... [more]

Diversity-Based Evolutionary Population Dynamics: A New Operator for Grey Wolf Optimizer
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: evolutionary population dynamics, Grey Wolf Optimizer, hybrid algorithms, meta-heuristic algorithms, swarm-intelligence techniques
Evolutionary Population Dynamics (EPD) refers to eliminating poor individuals in nature, which is the opposite of survival of the fittest. Although this method can improve the median of the whole population of the meta-heuristic algorithms, it suffers from poor exploration capability to handle high-dimensional problems. This paper proposes a novel EPD operator to improve the search process. In other words, as the primary EPD mainly improves the fitness of the worst individuals in the population, and hence we name it the Fitness-Based EPD (FB-EPD), our proposed EPD mainly improves the diversity of the best individuals, and hence we name it the Diversity-Based EPD (DB-EPD). The proposed method is applied to the Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) and named DB-GWO-EPD. In this algorithm, the three most diversified individuals are first identified at each iteration, and then half of the best-fitted individuals are forced to be eliminated and repositioned around these diversified agents with equal pr... The Mechanism of Casing Deformation before Hydraulic Fracturing and Mitigation Measures in Shale Gas Horizontal Wells
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: casing deformation, casing string, fracturing, shale gas well, tubular mechanics
During the development of shale gas, one of the major challenges is the casing deformation (CD) in the horizontal section due to the geological activity. Recently, the casing deformation before hydraulic fracturing (CDBF) occurred in multiple shale gas wells in L block in China. In this paper, based on the theory of tubular mechanics, the relationship between casing buckling and CDBF caused by casing running in is analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. It is found that the buckling deformation caused by running the casing string process is not sufficient to prevent the tool (Φ99 mm bridge plug). On the other hand, the mechanism of CDBF is systematically analyzed based on the actual field data and finite element (FE) method. In order to analyze the CDBF mechanism, the comparison between the actual casing trajectory and the reservoir rock (S#1, S#2, S#3 and M#1) in horizontal section in H2 platform is carried out, and the preliminary CDBF mechanism is proposed. Then, two groups of FE... [more]

A Novel Method to Detoxify Steam-Exploded Biomass and Produce a Substrate for Biorefinery
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biomass, detoxification, Fermentation, fluid bed, inhibitors, steam explosion
Pre-treatments at relatively high temperatures (range 160 °C−220 °C) are currently used to transform lignocellulosics into biofuels and chemicals. In this step, several molecules with an inhibitory effect in the subsequent fermentation processes are generated. These inhibitors include low-molecular-weight molecules and lignin fragments that can be removed by water washing. However, this procedure also removes valuable soluble carbohydrates which are then difficult to recover from the diluted stream. In this work, a new method to detoxify steam-exploded substrates is reported. The procedure is based on the evaporation of low-weight acids and aldehydes, which leaves all the sugars in the solid matrix, while the cellulose hornification (an irreversible modification of the cellulose fibres that depresses the saccharification yield) is prevented by adding steam to the hot fluidizing flow stream. Two systems were tested: a 0.1 kg/batch oscillating fluidized bed and a continuous fluidized bed... [more]

Advanced Exergy Analysis of an Absorption Chiller/Kalina Cycle Integrated System for Low-Grade Waste Heat Recovery
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: advanced exergy analysis, cascade utilization, exergy analysis, power generation, waste heat recovery
Exergy analysis and advanced exergy analysis of an absorption chiller/Kalina cycle integrated system are conducted in this research. The exergy destruction of each component and overall exergy efficiency of the cascade process have been obtained. Advanced exergy analysis investigates the interactions among different components and the actual improvement potential. Results show that among all the equipment, the largest exergy destruction is in the generators and absorber. System exergy efficiency is obtained as 35.52%. Advanced analysis results show that the endogenous exergy destruction is dominant in each component. Interconnections among different components are not significant but very complicated. It is suggested that the improvement priority should be given to the turbine. Performance improvement of this low-grade waste heat recovery process is still necessary because around 1/4 of the total exergy destruction can be avoided. Improved Remora Optimization Algorithm with Mutualistic Strategy for Solving Constrained Engineering Optimization Problems
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: mutualistic strategy, remora optimization algorithm, roulette wheel selection, sailfish optimization algorithm, swarm intelligence optimization algorithm, tent chaotic mapping, whale optimization algorithm
Recently, a new swarm intelligence optimization algorithm called the remora optimization algorithm (ROA) was proposed. ROA simulates the remora’s behavior of the adsorption host and uses some formulas of the sailfish optimization (SFO) algorithm and whale optimization algorithm (WOA) to update the solutions. However, the performance of ROA is still unsatisfactory. When solving complex problems, ROA’s convergence ability requires further improvement. Moreover, it is easy to fall into local optimization. Since the remora depends on the host to obtain food and optimize ROA performance, this paper introduces the mutualistic strategy to strengthen the symbiotic relationship between the remora and the host. Meanwhile, chaotic tent mapping and roulette wheel selection are added to further improve the algorithm’s performance. By incorporating the above improvements, this paper proposes an improved remora optimization algorithm with a mutualistic strategy (IROA) and uses 23 benchmark functions... [more]

Numerical Investigation of Fracture Morphology Characteristics in Heterogeneous Reservoirs
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bifurcation, gravels, heterogeneity, hydraulic fracture, weak interface
Highly heterogeneous glutenite reservoirs with large amounts of gravel and weak interfaces pose a great challenge to predicting the trajectory of hydraulic fractures during the fracturing process. Based on the phase field method, a fully coupled numerical model of hydraulic fracturing is established. This paper is devoted to investigating the variation in the overall expansion pattern of hydraulic fractures in reservoirs considering randomly distributed gravel and weak interfaces. The numerical results demonstrate that the existence of gravel and a weak interface could alter the extending paths of the hydraulic fractures as well as the value of critical bifurcation injection rate. As the fracture energy of the weak interface is large enough, the hydraulic fracture tends to cross the gravel and the weak interface between the rock matrix and the gravel, forming a planar fracture. Deflection and branching of the hydraulic fracture are more likely to occur in reservoirs containing large gr... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Capture, exergy analysis, LNG cold energy, parametric analysis, SCV
Under the guidance of China’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060, the petrochemical industry is increasingly adopting energy-saving and emission-reduction technologies. To realize the low carbon operation of the LNG (liquefied natural gas) receiving terminal, an innovative SCV (submerged combustion vaporizer) flue gas carbon capture system using LNG cold energy was established, and the system also combined with an ORC (organic Rankine cycle). HYSYS software was used to simulate the process of the SCV flue gas carbon capture system and the LNG regasification system. The simulation results showed that the proposed system has low carbon emission and low energy consumption performance. Moreover, the sensitivity analysis of the evaporation pressure of working fluids, CO2 capture pressure, and CO2 capture temperature was carried out. The key parameters were optimized by HYSYS software to achieve the optimal operation cost of the system. When the evaporation pressure of working fluid... [more]

Study on the Influence of Pressure Reduction and Chemical Injection on Hydrate Decomposition
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: depressurization and chemical injection combined method, hydrate decomposition efficiency, hydrate recovery efficiency, natural gas hydrate
This study simulated seabed high pressure and low temperature conditions to synthesize natural gas hydrates, multi-stage depressurization mode mining hydrates as the blank group, and then carried out experimental research on the decomposition and mining efficiency of hydrates by depressurization and injection of different alcohols, inorganic salts, and different chemical agent concentrations. According to the experimental results, the chemical agent with the best decomposition efficiency is preferred; the results show that: the depressurization and injection of a certain mass concentration of chemical agents to exploit natural gas hydrate is more effective than pure depressurization to increase the instantaneous gas production rate. This is because depressurization combined with chemical injection can destroy the hydrate phase balance while effectively reducing the energy required for hydrate decomposition, thereby greatly improving the hydrate decomposition efficiency. February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biomass-steam gasification, Carbon Capture, chemical looping air separation, multi-phase particle in cell, quadruple fluidized bed gasifier (QFBG)
Utilization of bioenergy with carbon capture can realize carbon-negative syngas production. The quadruple fluidized bed gasifier (QFBG) integrates a chemical looping oxygen generation process and a dual fluidized bed gasifier with limestone as bed material. It is one promising device that can convert biomass to H2-rich syngas whilst capturing CO2 with little energy penalty. However, experimental or numerical simulation of QFBG is rarely reported on due to its complex structure, hindering the further commercialization and deployment of QFBG. In this work, a new computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver is proposed to predict the complex physicochemical processes in QFBG based on the multi-phase particle in cell (MPPIC) methodology with the assistance of the open source software, OpenFOAM. The solver is first validated against experimental data in terms of hydrodynamics and reaction kinetics. Then, the solver is used to investigate the QFBG property. Estimation of Water Vapor Density in Adiabatic Mixing of Cryogenic Gas and Moist Air
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adiabatic mixing, cryogenic fuels, leak monitoring, water vapor density
Concentration distribution is essential for the emergency disposal of cryogenic fuel leakage. In the dispersion process of cryogenic gas, its concentration is greatly influenced by the atmospheric water vapor. The authors have presented an adiabatic mixing model to derive the concentration of the cryogenic gas, in which the value of water vapor density is obtained by referring to the NIST database continuously. However, it is difficult to achieve fast system response times for real-time monitoring systems when calling NIST. Thus, a simple algebraic model of water vapor density with high calculation efficiency is necessary. Based on the detection of temperature and the solution of water vapor partial pressure, a calculation model was developed. For a given initial ambient temperature and relative humidity, the dew point could be solved by Qian’s correlation. By temperature comparisons of the mixture cloud, dew point, and triple point, the water vapor partial pressure can be calculated b... [more]

Keywords: ionic conductivity, LFP, lithium metal, lithium metal battery, polymer electrolyte, single-ion conductor
Lithium metal batteries are one of the more promising replacements for lithium-ion batteries owing to their ability to reach high energy densities. The main problem limiting their commercial application is the formation of dendrites, which significantly reduces their durability and renders the batteries unsafe. In the present work, we used a single-ion conducting gel polymer electrolyte based on a poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SEBS) block copolymer, which was functionalized with benzenesulfonylimide anions and plasticized by a mixture of ethylene carbonate and dimethylacetamide (SSEBS-Ph-EC-DMA), with a solvent uptake of 160% (~12 solvent molecules per one functional group of the membrane). The SSEBS-Ph-EC-DMA electrolyte exhibits an ionic conductivity of 0.6 mSm∙cm−1 at 25 °C and appears to be a cationic conductor (TLi+ = 0.72). SSEBS-Ph-EC-DMA is electrochemically stable up to 4.1 V. Keywords: energy loss, entropy production theory, multi-stage PAT, Pearson correlation coefficient, vortex
Multi-stage pump as turbine (PAT) has a wider range of heads and application intervals compared to single-stage PAT. In our research, we have conducted experimental and numerical simulation studies on this issue. In this paper, based on experimental research, numerical simulation is applied to calculate the multi-stage PAT flow field. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: discharge characteristics, equivalent circuit, lithium-ion battery, simulation model
Lithium-ion batteries are one of the most popular and efficient energy storage devices. In this paper, the characteristics of high-capacity lithium-iron-phosphate batteries during the impulse and long-term operation modes of batteries with different levels of the discharge current are considered. A modified DP-model is proposed. The novelty of the model is the possibility to calculate the activation polarization parameters for different discharge currents. The state of charge is estimated using a high-order polynomial. Based on the developed model, transient processes with rapid load changes and the dependence of the battery voltage on the state of charge were obtained. Here, the model is intended to be used for the design of energy storage systems. The results showed that the DP-model is reliable under the tested conditions and can be used for the considered application.

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cold start, multi physical transmission process, multiscale two-dimensional model, operation conditions, proton exchange membrane fuel cell, purge strategy
The commercial proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system needs to be equipped with the capacity to survive a harsh environment, including sub-freezing temperatures. The cold start of PEMFC brings about great technical challenges, mainly due to the ice blockage in the components, which seriously hinders the multi physical transmission process. A multiscale, two-dimensional model was established to explore the gas purging in PEMFC under different electrochemical reaction intensities. The results indicate that the optimal case is obtained by B3-1 with a power density of 0.796 W cm−2, and the power density increases first and then decreases, followed by stoichiometric flow ratio (ξ) changes. It is worth noting that the water mole fraction in the PEM is closely related to the water concentration gradient.
