Galo Albor, Amin Mirkouei, Armando G. McDonald, Ethan Struhs, Farid Sotoudehnia
April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: plastic waste, polystyrene, pyrolysis oil, slow pyrolysis, thermochemical conversion
This study evaluates the potential of recycling polystyrene (PS) plastic wastes via a fixed bed (batch) slow pyrolysis reactor. The novelty lies in examining the reactor design, conversion parameters, and reaction kinetics to improve the process yield, activation energy, and chemical composition. PS samples were pyrolyzed at 475−575 °C for 30 min under 10−15 psi. Process yield and product attributes were evaluated using different methods to understand PS thermal degradation characteristics better. The results show that PS decomposition started within 2 min from all temperatures, and the total decomposition point of 97% at 475 °C at approximately 5 min. Additionally, analytical results indicate that the average necessary activation energy is 191 kJ/mol. Pyrolysis oil from PS was characterized by gas chromatography−mass spectrometry. The results show that styrene was produced 57−60% from all leading oil compounds (i.e., 2,4-diphenyl-1-butene, 2,4,6-triphenyl-1-hexene, and toluene), and 4... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: crude oil wax, gas condensate, hydrocarbon solvent, ionic liquid
The current alternative of using aromatic-based wax soak solvents has been found to be hazardous and imposes a high cost on field expenditures. These solvents are widely used in the oil and gas industry to soften up wax before the pigging process. However, their impacts on the environment are quite concerning. Plus, they also impose hazardous exposure and are found to be damaging to both plastic and rubber hoses. To replace the current alternative with other hydrocarbon-based wax soak solvents, ionic liquids were found to have the capability to increase the solvent power capabilities and the efficiency of wax soak solvent in dissolving heavy crude oil. To optimise the application of hydrocarbon solvents and ionic liquid in wax dissolution, the affinity of ionic liquids in three solvents was studied. The solvents were condensate, ethyl acetate, and xylene. It was found that from four types of ionic liquids tested, only BMIMCL and HMIMBr were miscible in all three of the solvents used. D... [more]

Keywords: Eulerian probability density function, filter, particle size distribution, two-phase flows
A full 3D numerical simulation of the two-phase flow made up of (bio)diesel and particles, has been carried out to reproduce the deposition pattern of particles in a BOSCH automotive filter. From a probability density function (PDF), a simple Eulerian-Eulerian two-phase model is proposed for diesel and particles. The proposed formulation allows for a detailed description of the relationship between the velocity and size of the particles. A Brinkman-Darcy approximation has been considered for the flow through the filtering paper and is proved to be sufficient for the typical filter working conditions. The new tool is able to reproduce the deposition pattern shown by the used filters.

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: corrosion detection, endoscopic robot, gas-driven robot, pipelines
The internal inspection of corrosion in large natural gas pipelines is a fundamental task for the prevention of possible failures. Photos and videos provide direct proof of internal corrosion defects. However, the implementation of this technique is limited by fast robot motion and poor lighting conditions, with high-quality images being key to its success. In this work, we developed a natural gas-driven pipeline endoscopic robot (GDPER) for the visual inspection of the inner wall surfaces of pipelines. GDPER consists of driving, odometer, and vision modules connected by universal joints. It is designed to work in a 154 mm gas-pressurized pipeline up to a maximum of 6 MPa, allowing it to smoothly pass through bends and cross-ring welds at a maximum speed of 3 m/s using gas pressure driving. Test results have shown that HD MP4 video files can be obtained, and the location of defects on the pipelines can be detected by intelligent video image post-processing. The gas-driven function enab... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical conductance, emulsification stability, emulsification variables, nonionic surfactant, phase inversion temperature
The effects of emulsification variables, such as surfactant type and heating/cooling emulsion processes, on the emulsification characteristics of silicone oil’s emulsions prepared by the phase inversion temperature method were investigated in this study. The water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions have been widely applied to enhance burning efficiency and reduce both pollutant emissions and fuel consumption. The silicone oil was emulsified with de-ionized water with the assistance of nonionic surfactants to form oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. The hydrophilic−lipophilic balance (HLB) value of the Span 80 and Tween 20 surfactant mixture was set equal to 10 based on their weight proportions and the respective HLB values of the two surfactants. The experimental results show that the emulsions with the Span 80/Tween 20 surfactant mixture appeared to have a higher phase inversion temperature and a larger electrical conductance. On the other hand, it has a lower emulsification stability and a narrower ra... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: initial support structure, softening, stability, swelling force, swelling loess
The stability of tunnel is greatly affected by the changes in volume and strength of swelling loess caused by humidification. Quantitative reflection of the influence of humidification on stability in mechanical model has important engineering significance for the design of support structures. Based on the fact that parameters related to swelling and strength are functions of water content, the water content was introduced into the classical surrounding rock−support model, and a safety factor was employed as the index of stability. Thus, a stability analysis framework of swelling loess tunnel was established by considering the swelling and softening of swelling loess. In an engineering case, the theoretical models presented in this paper were introduced to investigate the change rules of surrounding rock deformation and tunnel safety factor, as well as the sensitivity of the safety factor of tunneling in swelling loess. Analysis results showed that the change rules of surrounding rock... [more]

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: alternating current preheating, lithium-plating, square wave, temperature-adaptive
Alternating current preheating (ACP) of lithium-ion batteries has the advantage of a high heating rate while inhibiting lithium plating. Two strategies based on terminal voltage control and full battery impedance control were proposed to simplify the ACP implementation. However, such strategies either severely compromise the preheating rate or induce non-negligible lithium plating. To maximize the preheating rate while ensuring no lithium plating, an ACP method based on anode potential control is developed using a square wave alternating current. The operation boundaries of lithium plating prevention, in terms of frequency and maximum permissible current amplitude, are determined using the anode potential and impedance. Their effectiveness in preventing lithium plating is validated by repeating 800 cycles of preheating. By applying the operation boundaries, a temperature-adaptive preheating is found to be able to speed up the preheating rate with higher frequency, smaller temperature i... [more]

Keywords: high-voltage gain step-up DC–DC converter, hill climbing algorithm, maximum power point tracker, non-isolated topology
In order to generate electricity from solar PV modules, this study proposed a novel high-voltage gain step-up (HVGSU) DC−DC converter for solar photovoltaic system operation with a maximum power point (MPP) tracker. The PV array can supply power to the load via a DC−DC converter, increasing the output voltage. Due to the stochastic nature of solar energy, PV arrays must use the MPPT control approach to function at the MPP. This study suggests a novel HVGSU converter that uses the primary boost conversion cell and combines switched capacitors and voltage multiplier cells. The proposed topology is upgradeable for high-voltage gain step-up and can be incorporated as well. A clamp circuit reuses the energy that leaks out so that the switch voltage stress and power loss are kept to a minimum. One thing that makes it stand out is that the voltage stress on the diodes and switch stays low and constant even as the duty cycle changes. Additionally, the inductor greatly reduces the diodes’ rever... [more]

Keywords: forcible imbibition, imbibition capacity, induced microfractures, shale, shut-in time
Water imbibition is a key factor affecting the flowback regime of shale gas wells after volume fracturing. In this study, a set of experimental apparatus and corresponding test and evaluation methods were developed to analyze the laws of forcible imbibition of water in a shale reservoir, characterize the initiation time of microfractures induced by shale hydration quantitatively, and optimize the shut-in time of shale gas wells; the imbibition depths of different pore types are quantitatively calculated based on the multiple pore imbibition analytical model. The experimental results show that: according to imbibition saturation growth rate, the shale forcible imbibition can be divided into three periods, imbibition diffusion, imbibition transition, and imbibition balance. Among them, the imbibition diffusion period is the main period for imbibition capacity rise. The reason for this phenomenon is that due to the fluid pressure difference effect, the shale fills its large pores and micr... [more]

With the development of intelligent coal mine construction, China’s coal production safety has been greatly improved, but coal mine gas explosion accidents still cannot be completely avoided and the unsafe acts of miners are an important cause of the accidents. Therefore, this study firstly collected 100 coal mine gas explosion cases in China, improved the framework of human factors analysis and classification system (HFACS) and used it to identify the causes of miners’ unsafe acts in detail. A hierarchy of the impacting factors is established. Then, combining with the interpretive structural model (ISM), the correlation between the impacting factors among different levels, especially among non-adjacent levels, is qualitatively analyzed through expert judgment. Then, the correlation among the contributing factors was quantitatively tested by chi-square test and odds ratio (OR) analysis. On this basis, a Bayesian network (BN) is constructed for the impacting factors of miners’ unsafe ac... [more]

Keywords: aluminum nitride powder, carbon black, carbon thermal reduction and nitridation, sodium aluminate
At present, the carbothermal reduction and nitridation process is an important method for the large-scale preparation of aluminum nitride powder in industry, but the tremendous energy consumption caused by long-term high temperatures seriously restricts its practical application. To solve this problem, the (NaAlO2+C) mixture with a mole ratio of NaAlO2:C = 1:3 was prepared based on sodium aluminate and carbon black which has been ball milled with anhydrous ethanol as a grinding liquid. The crystal structure evolution and nitridation reaction behavior of sodium aluminate at 800−1600 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere in the presence of carbon were systematically studied employing XRD, SEM, and ICP-MS. The results showed that: high energy θ-Al2O3, η-Al2O3 can be excited by heating sodium aluminate to 1400 °C under a nitrogen atmosphere in the presence of carbon. The transformation process between sodium aluminate and aluminum nitride is carried out via the direct nitridation of θ-Al2O3, η-Al... [more]

Keywords: coal-seam dip angle, finite-element analysis, horizontal angle, mined-out collapse, pipe–soil friction coefficient
To solve the safety hazard of a buried gas pipeline caused by subsidence of a mined-out area, a three-dimensional model of a buried pipeline in a mined-out area was established using geological parameters and the finite-element software ABAQUS. The effects of the friction coefficient of the pipe and soil, the coal-seam dip angle, and the horizontal angle on the mechanical behavior of the pipe under varying widths of goaf area were investigated. The results indicate that the maximum equivalent stress of the pipeline is negatively correlated with the horizontal angle. Concerning longitudinal mining, the pipeline exhibits a high-stress zone when the mining length is >200 m, the surface displacement appears in a small range when the mining length is 40 m, and the stratum displacement range increases gradually with the increase in the mining length. When the width of the goaf is constant, the maximum equivalent stress of the pipeline is positively correlated with the tube-soil friction coef... [more]

Keywords: injector, internal flow field characteristics, numerical simulation, Pelton turbine, sediment erosion
Based on the solid−liquid two-phase flow model, SST k-ω model, and Lagrangian equation model of particle motion, numerical simulations of the sediment−water flow in the injector of a large Pelton turbine were conducted. The distribution rules of pressure, velocity, erosion rate, and erosion location of the injector were obtained by analyzing the sediment−water flow characteristics and sediment erosion distribution characteristics of the injector. The results revealed that the velocity distribution trend of the water inside the cylindrical jet exhibited a nonlinear distribution, and the phenomenon of “velocity deficit” occurred at the end of the needle guide and needle tip, resulting in a decrease in the jet quality of the injector. The sediment particle diameter affected the erosion rate of the needle and erosion location of the needle and nozzle port ring. This study provided guidance for sediment erosion analysis and the prediction of the utility of large Pelton turbines.

April 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: char oxidation, kinetics, pyrolysis, thermogravimetry, torrefaction
Fixed-bed pyrolysis of torrefied spruce wood, for a heating temperature of 800 K, results in char yields between about 27−57 wt% (versus 23 wt% for untreated wood), depending on both pre-treatment temperatures (533−583 K) and holding times (8−25 min). In this study char oxidation behavior and kinetics are investigated by means of thermogravimetric analysis. The differential thermogravimetric curves always showed a low-temperature zone of slow rates (oxidative devolatilization), followed by a high-rate zone with a well-defined peak (oxidation). As the torrefaction severity increases, the temperature range of the oxidative devolatilization enlarges. Moreover, the oxidation rates become slower (both burning and burnout temperatures tend to increase). As already found for untreated wood chars, the two stages are well described by a linear and a power-law rate reaction, respectively. Volatiles released from the devolatilizations are approximately around 20 wt%, but torrefaction causes lower... [more]

Keywords: drying kinetics, Fick’s second law of diffusion, initial moisture content, single biomass particle
Drying has been widely studied as a necessary process in biomass utilization. The steam diffusion law plays an important role in drying kinetics. The drying kinetics of a single biomass particle using Fick’s second law of diffusion was studied in this paper. A parabolic relationship appeared between the critical moisture content and temperature. The critical moisture content decreased with the increase in drying temperature and the initial moisture content. The drying temperature had a significant effect on the effective diffusivity and coefficient of mass transfer during the dramatically falling period of the biomass drying process. However, it was affected by the effective diffusivity and coefficient of mass transfer during the slowly falling period. The initial moisture caused the opposite effect during the different periods. The normalized biomass moisture content generally increased with the increase in drying temperature, and decreased with the increase in initial moisture conten... [more]
