Study on the Optimal Dispatching Strategy of a Combined Cooling, Heating and Electric Power System Based on Demand Response
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Algorithms, combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) system, demand response, two-stage optimal dispatch
This paper proposes a combined cooling, heating and electric power (CCHP) system based on demand side response. In order to improve the economy of the system, a two-stage optimal scheduling scheme is proposed with the goal of minimizing the total operating cost of the system and maximizing user satisfaction. The optimal operation of the system was divided into two optimization problems, including the demand side and the supply side. In the first stage, combined with user satisfaction, from the new point of view that users are prone to excessive behavior due to time-of-use electricity prices, the cooling, heating and power load curves are optimized. In the second stage, an economic dispatch model that includes operating costs in terms of energy, maintenance and environment is established. An improved artificial bee colony (IABC) algorithm is used to solve the optimal energy production scheme based on the demand curves optimized in the first stage. Case studies are conducted to verify th... [more]

An Adaptive Tracking-Extended Kalman Filter for SOC Estimation of Batteries with Model Uncertainty and Sensor Error
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: EKF, model uncertainty, sensor error, SOC
Accurate state of charge (SOC) plays a vital role in battery management systems (BMSs). Among several developed SOC estimation methods, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) has been extensively applied. However, EKF cannot achieve valid estimation when the model accuracy is inadequate, the noise covariance matrix is uncertain, and the sensor has large errors. This paper makes two contributions to overcome these drawbacks: (1) A variable forgetting factor recursive least squares (VFFRLS) is proposed to accomplish parameters identification. This method updates the forgetting factor according to the innovation sequence, which accuracy is superior to the forgetting factor recursive least squares (FFRLS); (2) an adaptive tracking EKF (ATEKF) is proposed to estimate the SOC of the battery. In ATEKF, the error covariance matrix is adaptively corrected according to the innovation sequence and correction factor. The value of the correction factor is related to the actual error. Proposed algorithms... [more]

A Multi-Criteria Evaluation of Applications Supporting Public Transport Users
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: journey planners, MCDM/MCDA, mobile travel applications, passenger information system, travel information, usability
Reducing the energy consumption of transport in urban areas is possible if appropriate measures are taken to make public transport more attractive. These include all kinds of journey planners that are part of the passenger information system. Various applications available on the market allow passengers to evaluate their usability. This paper presents and compares nine of the most popular journey planners available to iOS and Android users travelling in Krakow. The comparison took into account all the information obtained from the surveys. In addition, using a multi-criteria approach, the final ranking of the set of journey planners was developed. The assessment was made on the basis of a set of nine criteria indicated by travellers as the most important ones. The obtained results showed disproportions in the functionality of particular solutions. They also indicated the apps that are most frequently and willingly used by local (urban city/agglomeration) travellers.

Energy and Conventional and Advanced Exergy Analyses of Low-Temperature Geothermal Binary-Flashing Cycle Using Zeotropic Mixtures
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: advanced exergy analysis, binary-flashing cycle, geothermal energy, inerting mass concentration, zeotropic mixtures
Due to its deep utilization of geobrine and its high net power output, the binary-flashing cycle (BFC) is deemed to be the future geothermal energy power generation technology. The working fluids considered in present analysis are zeotropic mixtures (R245/R600a). The system thermodynamic model is built, and the energy and conventional and advanced exergy analyses are carried out to reveal the real optimization potential. It is demonstrated that the optimal ranges of R245fa mass fraction and working fluid dryness at the evaporator outlet are 0.30~0.50 and 0.40~0.60, considering the thermodynamic performance and the flammability of the zeotropic mixtures, simultaneously. Conventional exergy analysis indicates that the maximum exergy destruction occurs in the condenser, followed by the expander, evaporator, flashing tank, preheater, high-pressure pump and low-pressure pump. Meanwhile, the advanced exergy analysis reveals that the expander should be given the first priority for optimizatio... [more]

Evaluation of the Effects of Using the Giant Miscanthus (Miscanthus × Giganteus) Biomass in Various Energy Conversion Processes
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, Biomass, combustion, energy value, energy yield, giant miscanthus, heating boilers fouling
The giant miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus) is one of the most essential energy plants. It also finds various alternative uses, including installing belts to prevent soil erosion. Biomass from such belts should be removed and rationally managed every year. The parameters of miscanthus biomass were investigated in terms of its suitability for combustion and anaerobic fermentation. Under the conditions of the experiment, miscanthus achieved a stable yield already in the second year of vegetation, mainly due to the high planting density. Energy parameters turned out to be typical for straw biomass (calorific value 18.06 MJ/kg). Relatively low ash melting temperatures (<1400 °C) and their chemical composition meant a high risk of contamination depositing on heating devices, which is often indicated as a shortcoming of biomass compared to hard coal. Miscanthus silage can be a valuable substrate for anaerobic digestion, but it requires a sufficiently early harvest, which affects the yie... [more]

Blockage Corrections for Tidal Turbines—Application to an Array of Turbines in the Alderney Race
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: actuator disk, Alderney Race, blockage, Telemac3D, tidal turbine
Tidal turbines are located in shallow water depths in comparison to their dimensions (15 m-diameter turbines in 40 m depths, typically). Constrained vertically by the water depth and laterally by neighbouring turbines, the flow within a tidal farm is subjected to blockage effects that influence the performance of individual devices. The Betz limit (which is the maximum power extractable from an unconstrained flow) can, therefore, be exceeded as demonstrated by Garrett and Cummins. Thus, beyond a significant blockage ratio, blockage effects should be considered when assessing the energy production of a tidal farm. The actuator disk method is particularly suited to simulate the flow field within an array of turbines under realistic tidal flow conditions. However, the implementation of actuator disks in coastal numerical models relies on relationships that neglect the blockage effects on the thrust and power of devices. We propose here an actuator disk formulation corrected to integrate t... [more]

Effect of In-Pore Wettability on Mass Transfer Performance of Fuel Cell Gas Diffusion Layer
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fuel cell, mass transfer, wettability
The gas diffusion layer (GDL), as the main mass transfer carrier in a hydrogen fuel cell, transports fuel and discharges water, the only by-product of the electrochemical reaction. The dispersion process of water in the pore will hinder the diffusion of gas, thus reducing the concentration of fuel gas at the catalytic site, resulting in the decrease of the electrochemical reaction rate. In this paper, the effect of wettability in the GDL hole on the water transport process is studied. When the pore wall is hydrophilic, the liquid phase is affected by the gas phase eddy current velocity field, and the particles at the center advance to the edge, forming a liquid phase interface with a thin center and thick edge. With the increase of the wall contact angle, the curvature of the three-phase interface increases, the wall adhesion decreases, and the liquid phase is more likely to be discharged. When the contact angle is 130°, the liquid phase almost does not shift in the hole with a radius... [more]

A Catalytic Effectiveness Factor for a Microbial Electrolysis Cell Biofilm Model
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biofilm, biohydrogen, effectiveness factor, microbial electrolysis cell, Modelling
The aim of this work is to propose a methodology to obtain an effectiveness factor for biofilm in a microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) system and use it to reduce a partial differential equation (PDE) biofilm MEC model to an ordinary differential equation (ODE) MEC model. The biofilm mass balances of the different species are considered. In addition, it is considered that all the involved microorganisms are attached to the anodic biological film. Three effectiveness factors are obtained from partial differential equations describing the spatial distributions of potential and substrate in the biofilm. Then, a model reduction is carried out using the global mass balances of the different species in the system. The reduced model with three uncertain but bounded effectiveness factors is evaluated numerically and analyzed in the sense of stability and parametric sensibility to demonstrate its applicability. The reduced ODE model is compared with a validated model taken from the literature, a... [more]

A Core Damage Constitutive Model for the Time-Dependent Creep and Relaxation Behavior of Coal
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Coal, constitutive model, creep, damage, rock mechanics, stress relaxation
The creep and stress relaxation behaviors of coal are common in coal mining. The unified constitutive model is suitable to describe and predict both the creep and relaxation evolution characteristics of rocks. The generalized Kelvin model is the core element for traditional and improved component models to reflect both the nonlinear creep and relaxation. In this paper, an improved core damage model, which could both reflect the creep and stress relaxation in relation to the damage evolution, was established based on a comparison of the traditional and improved component models, and the responding constitutive equations (creep and stress relaxation equation) at constant stress/strain were deduced. Then, the core damage model was validated to the uniaxial compressive multistage creep and stress relaxation test results of coal, showing that the model curves had great accordance with the experimental data. Moreover, the model comparisons on accuracy, parameter meaning, and popularization a... [more]

An Overview on Co-Pyrolysis of Biodegradable and Non-Biodegradable Wastes
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bio-oil, Biofuels, co-pyrolysis technology, waste biomass, waste valorization
Continuous urbanization and modernization have increased the burning of fossil fuels to meet energy needs across the globe, emanating environmental pollution and depleting fossil fuels. Therefore, a shift towards sustainable and renewable energy is necessary. Several techniques to exploit biomass to yield energy are trending, with pyrolysis one of them. Usually, a single feedstock is employed in pyrolysis for anoxygenic generation of biochar together with bio-oil at elevated temperatures (350−600 °C). Bio-oil produced through pyrolysis can be upgraded to crude oil after some modification. However, these modifications of bio-oil are one of the major drawbacks for its large-scale adoption, as upgradation increases the overall cost. Therefore, in recent years the scientific community has been researching co-pyrolysis technology that involves the pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass waste with non-biodegradable waste. Co-pyrolysis reduces the need for post-modification of bio-oil, unlike p... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gaseous sodium concentration, high alkali coal, slag-tapping furnace, spontaneous emission spectroscopy, temperature
High-alkali coal is rich in alkali metals, which can cause serious effects such as slagging and corrosion on the heating surface during combustion and utilization. A portable spectral system was utilized to simultaneously measure gaseous Na concentration and temperature in a 20 kW slag-tapping combustor and a slagging boiler furnace of a 300 MW power generation unit by flame spontaneous emission spectroscopy (FES) for simultaneous measuring. The result shows that both ZD-FK and ZD-HSQ (Fukang coal and Hongshaquan coal, Xinjiang Zhundong high-alkali coal) combustion flame temperatures are around 1400 °C at the outlet of the cyclone burner while the latter is slightly higher. The sodium concentration in the gas phase increases with the rising of the initial combustion temperature and unit load for one kind of coal, and the level of sodium concentration has a strong correlation with the Na content for different coal. Most of the sodium in the high temperature zone of the furnace exists in... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CatBoost, electric bus, energy consumption, fusion model, physical model
The energy consumption of electric vehicles is closely related to the problems of charging station planning and vehicle route optimization. However, due to various factors, such as vehicle performance, driving habits and environmental conditions, it is difficult to estimate vehicle energy consumption accurately. In this work, a physical and data-driven fusion model was designed for electric bus energy consumption estimation. The basic energy consumption of the electric bus was modeled by a simplified physical model. The effects of rolling drag, brake consumption and air-conditioning consumption are considered in the model. Taking into account the fluctuation in energy consumption caused by multiple factors, a CatBoost decision tree model was constructed. Finally, a fusion model was built. Based on the analysis of electric bus data on the big data platform, the performance of the energy consumption model was verified. The results show that the model has high accuracy with an average rel... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: mathematical modeling, power coefficient, power loss, wind turbine
This research aimed to introduce a comprehensive mathematical modeling approach based on the maximization of the power coefficient (Cp) to obtain the regulation in pitch angle and tip speed ratio (TSP), taking into account the detailed power losses at the different stages of the power train of the wind turbine. The model is used to track the optimal power coefficient of the wind turbine power train, considering both direct (without gearbox) and indirect (with gearbox) drive configurations. The result of the direct driveline was validated with a 100 W horizontal-axis wind turbine experimental system. The model estimated the optimal value of Cp at 0.48 for a pitch angle of 0 degrees and a TSR of 8.1, which could be obtained at a wind speed of around 11.2 m/s. The results also revealed that, within the lower wind regime, windage, hysteresis, and eddy current losses dominated, while during higher wind regimes, the copper, stray load, and insulator gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) losses gain... Climate change has brought a compelling need for cooling living spaces to the attention of researchers as well as construction professionals. The problem of overheating enclosures is now exacerbated in traditionally affected areas and is also affecting countries that were previously less prone to the issue. In this paper, we address measurements of thermal comfort and cooling emission efficiency parameters for different devices: ceiling panels, underfloor cooling, fan-assisted radiators, and fan coil. These devices were tested in low and high cooling capacities of up to 40 W/m2 while also featuring heating dummies to imitate internal heat gains. Air temperatures were measured at different heights, allowing to evaluate the thermal stratification with high accuracy. Thermal comfort differences of the tested systems were quantified by measuring both air velocities and operative temperatures at points of occupancy. This study experimentally investigated the performance of a PVT air collector coupled with a triangular block. The triangular block, newly suggested by the authors, is a triangular-shaped obstacle and was inserted at the bottom of the PVT air collector to enhance the heat transfer performance of the collector. The experiment was carried out in actual climate conditions in Korea with two air mass flow rate conditions: 0.03606 kg/m2 s and 0.06948 kg/m2 s. Results show the average values of electrical efficiency of the collector during the test period to be 16.15% and 16.43% for each air mass flow rate, while thermal efficiencies were 28.83% and 38.36%, respectively. The average values of total energy efficiencies were found to be 44.99% and 54.79%, respectively. The results show that air mass flow rate has a large impact on thermal and total energy efficiency, while it has a small impact on electrical efficiency. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the PVT air collector coupled with a tri... [more]

Keywords: battery storage, bypass diodes, hotspot, partial shadings, PV plants
In this paper, the authors propose to use batteries to improve the performance of grid-connected photovoltaic plants when their photovoltaic fields are subject to partial shading phenomena. Particular attention is devoted to predictable and repetitive partial shadings, such as those that often appear in urban residential environments. Firstly, battery packs with proper nominal voltage and capacity are connected in parallel to partially shaded photovoltaic submodules. Then, the shaded photovoltaic submodules are properly disconnected and connected to the respective photovoltaic string by using a “battery control unit”, which is operated by taking into account characteristics of the specific partial shading phenomenon to cope with. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed technique, an experimental study is performed to compare the performances of two identical prototypal grid-connected photovoltaic generators subject to identical artificial and repetitive partial shadings. In this paper, flat plate film cooling with two rows of compound angle cylindrical film cooling holes was investigated. A data processing method was evaluated which could determine the film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient simultaneously from the transient wall temperature data. The method was based on solving an inverse problem of the one-dimensional transient heat conduction equation. To evaluate the performance of the method, wall temperature data were obtained using the known film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient data as the convection boundary condition. Then, the method was applied to calculate the film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient based on the wall temperature data. Different blowing ratios, heat transfer coefficients, mainstream temperatures, and material thermal conductivities were investigated. In general, the data and calculation were in good agreement. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electricity prices, energy market, energy security, geothermal energy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The problem of rising energy prices stems from the weakening of economies operating in the realities of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, as well as from the rising cost of CO2 emission allowances in connection with the European Union’s environmental policy. The outbreak of war in Ukraine has deepened the energy crisis in European countries, which, to a significant extent, benefit from hydrocarbon resources imported from Russia. This problem is particularly acute in countries that are heavily dependent on conventional forms of energy production (e.g., Poland). In light of the problems observed, the need to develop a market for renewable energy has become more urgent than ever. Although this problem affects a number of countries, the authors of the study decided that it is particularly important in the region of the countries neighbouring the line of the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine, i.e., Poland and the Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia). Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air velocity, dynamic error, measurement correction, tachometric anemometer, wind energy
Measurements of air flow velocity are essential at every stage of the design, construction and operation of wind turbines. One of the basic measurement tools in this area is the tachometric anemometer, which is based on the simple physical phenomenon of the air kinetic energy exchange with a rotating measuring element. Tachometric anemometers have favorable operational features and good static metrological parameters. However, in the case of fast-changing flows, the measurement is burdened with a significant dynamic error, and the measured average value of the velocity is overestimated. This article presents the concept and results of pilot studies of a dynamic error correction method of tachometric anemometers. The correction consists of the precise measurement of the rotor’s rotational velocity and determination of the measured air velocity, taking into account the dynamics of the instrument. The developed method can be used in tachometric anemometers intended for laboratory, technic... [more]
