A Source-Level Estimation and Uncertainty Analysis of Methane Emission in China’s Oil and Natural Gas Sector
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: China, emission sources, methane emission inventory, oil and natural gas, uncertainty
A high-quality methane emission estimation in China’s oil and gas sector is the basis of an effective mitigation strategy. Currently, the published emission data and studies of China’s oil and gas sector only provide estimations of total emissions, which is not enough for good analysis of the trend and impact factors for the instruction of emission mitigation activities. The main problem is that published data for oil and gas infrastructure in China is incomplete, which makes it difficult to apply the conventional greenhouse gas inventory compiling method and the uncertainty estimation strategy. Therefore, this paper aims to develop a method to estimate infrastructure data using all available data, including partial data for the infrastructure, national production and consumption of oil and gas, and production and production capacity data of oil and gas enterprises, and then uses a Monte Carlo-based method to generate a source-based inventory and uncertainty analysis of methane emissio... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: elitist genetic algorithm, energy consumption, EVRP, neighbor routing
Nowadays, in researches on electric vehicle routing problems, in order to improve the delivery efficiency and reduce the routing cost, many important elements are broad discussed such as the customer time window, the routing algorithm, the electric energy consumption, etc. In these, the routing algorithm is the key element to achieve a good solution. Based on this background, the paper investigates the routing algorithm, then adopts the elitist genetic algorithm and proposes an improved neighbor routing initialization method for solving the electric vehicle routing problem. In our method, the electric vehicle energy consumption is used as the main component of the routing system. The neighbor routing initialization enables the routing system to choose the close route from a suitable first customer in the initialization, which makes the routing search faster and find the global optimal route easily. The simulations on the Solomon benchmark data and the Hiland Dairy milk delivery example... [more]

Experimental Investigation of Failure Mechanisms of Granites with Prefabricated Cracks Induced by Cyclic-Impact Disturbances
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: crack propagation, cyclic impacts, dynamic deformation, failure characteristics, fractured rock mass
Engineering rock mass is normally subject to cyclic−dynamic disturbances from excavation, blasting, drilling, and earthquakes. Natural fractures in rock masses can be reactivated and propagated under dynamic and static loadings, which affects the stability of rock mass engineering. However, fractured rock mass failure induced by cyclic-impact disturbances is far from clear, especially considering varying angles between the rock mass and the direction of impact loadings. This work investigated rock deformation and failure characteristics through cyclic impact tests on granite samples with cracks of different angles. A Hopkinson bar was employed for uniaxial cyclic impact tests on granite samples with the crack inclination angles of 0−90°. The magnetic resonance imaging technique was used to determine rocks’ porosity after cyclic impacts. The stress−strain curves, porosity, strength, deformation modulus, failure modes, and energy density of samples were obtained and discussed. Results sh... [more]

Prediction of Charging Demand of Electric City Buses of Helsinki, Finland by Random Forest
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: charger, charging, demand, demand, E bus, electric vehicle, methodology, random forest
Climate change, global warming, pollution, and energy crisis are the major growing concerns of this era, which have initiated the electrification of transport. The electrification of roadway transport has the potential to drastically reduce pollution and the growing demand for energy and to increase the load demand of the power grid, thereby giving a rise to technological and commercial challenges. Thus, charging load prediction is a crucial and demanding issue for maintaining the security and stability of power systems. During recent years, random forest has gained a lot of popularity as a powerful machine learning technique for classification as well as regression analysis. This work develops a random forest (RF)-based approach for predicting charging demand. The proposed method is validated for the prediction of public e-bus charging demand in the city of Helsinki, Finland. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme.

Prediction of Node Importance of Power System Based on ConvLSTM
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ConvLSTM, LSTM, power system node importance, prediction
In power systems, the destruction of some important nodes may cause cascading faults. If the most important node in the power system can be found, the important node can be protected in advance, thereby avoiding a blackout accident. At present, the evaluation algorithm of node importance is calculated based on the power flow of the power grid, so the calculation results must be lagging behind, and it does not have the ability to provide early warning for the power grid to provide protection signals. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the importance of nodes in the power system. After using a reasonable prediction model to predict the importance of nodes, we can simulate the future state of power system operation and avoid accidents for the dispatching agency of the power grid company according to the prediction results. This paper proposes a prediction model based on convolutional long short-term memory (ConvLSTM) to predict the importance of nodes. This method has obvious advantage... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aspect ratio, fusion neutron, molten salt, tokamak, transmutation, tritium breeding
The optimal shape of a fusion-based transmutation reactor with a molten salt coolant was determined by plasma physics, technology, and neutronic requirements. System parameters such as neutron multiplication, power density, shielding, and tritium breeding, were calculated in a self-consistent manner by coupling neutron transport analysis with conventional tokamak systems analysis. The plasma physics and engineering levels were similar to those used in the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. The influence of aspect ratio of the tokamak and fusion power on the radial build, and the transmutation properties associated with two molten salt options, FLiBe and FliNaBe, were investigated. Being compared with a transmutation reactor with a small aspect ratio, a transmutation reactor with large aspect ratio was smaller in size and had a larger maximum fusion power. This type of reactor also revealed increased tritium-breeding capability and a smaller initial transuranic (TRU) inve... [more]

Improving the Maximum Power Extraction from Wind Turbines Using a Second-Generation CRONE Controller
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: backstepping controller (BS), DFIG, fuzzy logic controller (FLC), MPPT, second-generation CRONE controller, sliding mode controller (SMC), WECS
Developing precise and robust algorithms that can help in obtaining maximum power yield in a variable speed wind turbine is an important area of research in wind engineering. The present manuscript proposes a technique that utilizes a second-generation CRONE controller for the maximum power tracking technique (MPPT) to maximize power generation in a wind energy conversion system (WECS) based on a double-fed induction generator (DFIG). The authors propose this novel method because the classical controllers cannot provide adequate performance in terms of extracting the maximum energy from variable speed wind turbines when applying a real wind profile and they cannot guarantee the high stability of the WECS. Moreover, this novel controller sufficiently handles problems related to the control effort level. The performance of the second-generation CRONE method was mathematically modeled using MATLAB/Simulink and compared with four other types of MPPT control techniques, which include a prop... [more]

Source-Load Coordinated Low-Carbon Economic Dispatch of Electric-Gas Integrated Energy System Based on Carbon Emission Flow Theory
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon emission flow, demand response, integrated energy system, ladder-type carbon price, low-carbon economic dispatch, Shapley value
The development of emerging technologies has enhanced the demand response (DR) capability of conventional loads. To study the effect of DR on the reduction in carbon emissions in an integrated energy system (IES), a two-stage low-carbon economic dispatch model based on the carbon emission flow (CEF) theory was proposed in this study. In the first stage, the energy supply cost was taken as the objective function for economic dispatch, and the actual carbon emissions of each energy hub (EH) were calculated based on the CEF theory. In the second stage, a low-carbon DR optimization was performed with the objective function of the load-side carbon trading cost. Then, based on the modified IEEE 39-bus power system/Belgian 20-node natural gas system, MATLAB/Gurobi was used for the simulation analysis in three scenarios. The results showed that the proposed model could effectively promote the system to reduce the load peak-to-valley difference, enhance the ability to consume wind power, and re... [more]

How Does Oil Future Price Imply Bunker Price—Cointegration and Prediction Analysis
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bunker price, cointegration analysis, forecasting, oil future price
This paper investigates how oil’s future price implies the bunker price through cointegration analysis first. A cointegration test confirms the long-run equilibrium condition of bunker and oil future prices. Based on the cointegration relationship, we construct VECM model to forecast bunker prices. In addition, we also consider ARMA, ARMAX, and VAR models for certifying whether considering the long-run equilibrium between bunker and oil future prices is helpful in prediction. One-step-ahead and four-step-ahead forecasting are considered and two out-of-sample datasets are used. The empirical results show that the increase in the value of the error correction term in the VECM model has the effect of pulling down the bunker return. VECM performs better than other models in prediction. The Crude Oil Future Contract 1 has better forecasting performance for bunker prices with VECM in the 1-step-ahead forecast, while Crude Oil Future Contract 3 performs slightly better than Crude Oil Future C... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cogeneration system, cost estimation, gas turbine CHP system, hybrid water desalination, mini gas turbine, thermal and membrane desalination
Nowadays, several technologies for desalination processes are available and widely employed. However, they consume a considerable amount of energy and involve high capital and operating costs. Therefore, the techno-economic analysis of a system coupling different energy sources with the desalination processes is of value. The possibility of coupling a small gas turbine combined heat and power system (GT CHP) with hybrid desalination plants (HDPs) has been assessed in this study. The proposed gas turbine power generation system, based on a single-stage centrifugal compressor and an uncooled centripetal turbine, provides design simplicity and reasonable installation costs for the power generating plant. The hybrid desalination technique, based on the use of two different desalination technologies, i.e., Reverse Osmosis (RO) and a thermal desalination process, has been chosen to better exploit the electrical and thermal energy produced by the mini CHP plant. Keywords: liquid/solid waste gasification, natural gas conversion, pulsed detonation gun technology, ultra-superheated steam
The technology of a pulsed detonation gun for gasification of organic waste with ultra-superheated steam has been experimentally demonstrated for the first time. Experiments were performed on natural gas conversion as well as on the gasification of liquid (waste machine oil) and solid (wood sawdust) waste by hot detonation products of natural gas−oxygen mixture at a frequency of detonation pulses f = 1 Hz. Periodic release of detonation products to a 100 L flow reactor provided a time-averaged mean temperature and pressure in the reactor at about 1200 K and 0.1 MPa. It is shown that the technology of a pulsed detonation gun can provide complete (100%) natural gas conversion to syngas containing H2 and CO with a H2/CO ratio of 1.25. During the gasification of liquid and solid wastes, the total volume fraction of combustible gases (H2, CO, and CH4) in the product syngas was 80 and 65% with H2/CO ratios of 0.8 and 0.5, respectively. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aero-engine, compressor, distortion, low Reynolds number, numerical simulation
The performance and stability of the transonic fan stage with a nonuniform inflow is a key issue in aero engine operation, and the coupling of inlet distortion and low Reynolds numbers at high altitude creates more severe challenges to aero engines. This work used computational methods to explore the performance and stability of a transonic fan stage with inlet distortion and a low Reynolds number. To investigate this issue, the transonic fan stage NASA stage 67 with a 180° total pressure distortion at a low Reynolds number was selected as the test case. Full-annulus 3D unsteady simulations were conducted to reveal the details of the flow field under coupling conditions. The computational results under different conditions were analyzed and showed that the coupling effect was not linearly stacked with single factors. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive local mean decomposition (ALMD), multiscale fuzzy entropy (MFE), photovoltaic (PV), series arc, support vector machine (SVM)
DC series arc fault detection is essential for improving the productivity of photovoltaic (PV) stations. The DC series arc fault also poses severe fire hazards to the solar equipment and surrounding building. DC series arc faults must be detected early to provide reliable and safe power delivery while preventing fire hazards. However, it is challenging to detect DC series arc faults using conventional overcurrent and current differential methods because these faults produce only minor current variations. Furthermore, it is hard to define their characteristics for detection due to the randomness of DC arc faults and other arc-like transients. This paper focuses on investigating a novel method to extract arc characteristics for reliably detecting DC series arc faults in PV systems. This methodology first uses an adaptive local mean decomposition (ALMD) algorithm to decompose the current samples into production functions (PFs) representing information from different frequency bands, then... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage system, cost optimization, energy time-shift, MMC-based BESS
Modular multilevel converter-based battery energy storage systems (MMC-based BESS) can play an important role when applied to power systems, for example, stabilizing and improving power quality. The integration of batteries in an MMC is usually performed in two ways: single-stage (SS) and two-stage (TS) (i.e., with dc/dc converter). Different references discuss the control strategies, sizing methodologies, and the advantages/drawbacks of these approaches. However, a deep comparison of these topologies is still missing in the literature. Thus, benchmarking SS and TS approaches is provided in this work. The battery current spectrum, the battery lifetime, the converter power losses, and the total costs are evaluated for both approaches. In addition, energy oversizing due to rounding is an important figure of merit since batteries account for a large amount of the costs. We simulate the techno-economic performance of a 950 MWt nuclear power plant, based on the Westinghouse lead-cooled fast reactor, coupled with molten salt thermal storage as a method for flexible energy dispatch. We use the System Advisor Model to model the nuclear reactor thermal power input and power cycle operating modes. We combine this robust engineering model with a mixed-integer linear program model for optimized dispatch scheduling.
