40 W Continuous Wave Ce:Nd:YAG Solar Laser through a Fused Silica Light Guide
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Ce:Nd:YAG, homogenizer, light-guide, parabolic mirror, side-pumped, solar laser
The solar laser power scaling potential of a side-pumped Ce:Nd:YAG solar laser through a rectangular fused silica light guide was investigated by using a 2 m diameter parabolic concentrator. The laser head was formed by the light guide and a V-shaped pump cavity to efficiently couple and redistribute the concentrated solar radiation from the parabolic mirror to a 4 mm diameter, 35 mm length Ce(0.1 at.%):Nd(1.1 at.%):YAG laser rod. The rectangular light guide ensured a homogeneous distribution of the solar radiation along the laser rod, allowing it to withstand highly concentrated solar energy. With the full collection area of the parabolic mirror, the maximum continuous wave (cw) solar laser power of 40 W was measured. This, to the best of our knowledge, corresponds to the highest cw laser power obtained from a Ce:Nd:YAG medium pumped by solar radiation, representing an enhancement of two times over that of the previous side-pumped Ce:Nd:YAG solar laser and 1.19 times over the highest... Simulation of Water Influx and Gasified Gas Transport during Underground Coal Gasification with Controlled Retracting Injection Point Technology
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: controlled retraction injection point (CRIP), gas migration, pressure distribution, underground coal gasification (UCG), water inflow
Underground coal gasification (UCG) may change the energy consumption structure from coal-dominated to gas-dominated in the years to come. Before that, three important problems need to be solved, including failure of gasification due to large amounts of water pouring into the gasifier, environmental pollution caused by gas migration to the surface, and low calorific value caused by poor control of the degree of gasification. In this study, a geological model is first established using the computer modeling group (CMG), a commercial software package for reservoir simulation. Then, the inflow of coal seam water into the gasifier during the controlled retracting injection point (CRIP) gasification process is simulated based on the geological model, and the maximum instantaneous water inflow is simulated too. Meanwhile, the migration of gasified gas is also simulated, and the migration discipline of different gases is shown. Finally, the pressure distributions in two stages are presented,... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: comprehensive evaluation index, DEAMTEL–CRITIC, energy lean marketing, renewable energy consumption, VIKOR
The reduction of carbon emissions in the power industry will play a vital role in global decarbonization. The power industry has three main strategies to achieve this reduction in emissions: to implement lean marketing strategies that effectively target users of power and encourage them to adopt decarbonizing technologies and services; to optimize the efficiency of these users of power; and to improve the efficiency of renewable energy sources. This paper establishes a comprehensive evaluation system of indexed data from power industry customers for the development of lean marketing strategies. This system evaluates indexes derived from customer data on renewable energy sources, carbon emissions, energy efficiency, and customer credit. It adopts the DEMATEL−CRITIC combination weight assignment and VIKOR method for system evaluation and conducts simulation experiments on customer data in a region of Northeastern China to give an example of how this method could be applied in practice to... Machine Learning for Solar Resource Assessment Using Satellite Images
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: meteorological data, photovoltaic systems, predictive model, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, satellite imagery
Understanding solar energy has become crucial for the development of modern societies. For this reason, significant effort has been placed on building models of solar resource assessment. Here, we analyzed satellite imagery and solar radiation data of three years (2012, 2013, and 2014) to build seven predictive models of the solar energy obtained at different altitudes above sea level. The performance of four machine learning algorithms was evaluated using four evaluation metrics, MBE, R2, RMSE, and MAPE. Random Forest showed the best performance in the model with data obtained at altitudes below 800 m.a.s.l. The results achieved by the algorithm were: 4.89, 0.82, 107.25, and 41.08%, respectively. In general, the differences in the results of the machine learning algorithms in the different models were not very significant; however, the results provide evidence showing that the estimation of solar radiation from satellite images anywhere on the planet is feasible.

Down-Hole Electromagnetic Heating of Deep Aquifers for Renewable Energy Storage
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electromagnetic heating, flows in porous media, low-enthalphy geothermal sources, partial differential equations
Electromagnetic (EM) heating is an emerging method for storing renewable energy, such as photovoltaic solar and wind electric power, into aquifers. We investigate how the captured energy increases the temperature of a prototypical deep aquifer for a six-month period and then to which extent the stored energy can be recovered during the consecutive six months. Water injected at a constant flow rate is simultaneously heated using a high-frequency electromagnetic microwave emitter operating at the water natural resonance frequency of 2.45 GHz. The coupled reservoir flow and EM heating are described using Darcy’s and the energy balance equations. The latter includes a source term accounting for the EM wave propagation and absorption, modeled separately using Maxwell’s equations. The equations are solved numerically by the Galerkin least-squares finite element method. The approach was validated using EM-heating input data obtained from controlled laboratory experiments and then was applied... [more]

A Self-Tuning LCC/SP System for Electric Vehicle Wireless Charging against Large Self- and Mutual Inductance Variations
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicle, LCC/SP compensation, switched capacitor, wireless energy transmission
An LCC/SP self-tuning wireless charging system is proposed herein for use in a wireless charging test bench. With different dislocations in addition to changes in the coil self-inductance and mutual inductance caused by different secondary magnetic shielding materials, the system can ensure that the high power factor of the primary side remains unchanged without changing the circuit topology. Based on this normalized detuning LCC/SP circuit model, a switch-controlled capacitor (SCC) self-tuning method based on PI control is proposed. The control scheme employs only two MOSFETs and capacitors, without WIFI communication or parameter identification. A 2 kW experimental device was set up in the laboratory, and experimental verification was carried out with large-scale dislocations and different secondary magnetic shielding materials. The experimental results confirm that the system can maintain a high power factor (>0.9) under a system mutual inductance variation of 47.7% and secondary co... [more]

Modelling of Battery Energy Storage System Providing FCR in Baltic Power System after Synchronization with the Continental Synchronous Area
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: algorithm, battery electric storage, FCR, frequency control, Simulation, state of charge recovery
This paper presents the case study of provisions of frequency containment reserve (FCR) with a battery electric storage system (BESS). The aim of the case study is the evaluation of the technical possibility to provide FCR in Latvian power systems after all Baltic power systems will synchronize with the Continental Europe Synchronous Area (CESA). To simulate the dynamics of BESS capacity and its state of charge (SOC), authors have developed an algorithm and mathematical model (it can be realized in different calculation programs). The case study calculations verified the model. The algorithm is conditionally divided into two parts—FCR provision and SOC recovery−which in turn is divided into three possible models of BESS state of charge recovery options: (1) overfulfillment—exceeding the specified FCR amount, (2) deadband utilization, and (3) BESS charging or discharging through scheduled transactions in intraday power market. The modelling was performed using historic frequency data of... [more]

High Refractive Index Diphenyl Sulfide Photopolymers for Solar Cell Antireflection Coatings
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: antireflection coatings, nanoimprinting, photopolymer, refractive index, solar cells
The anti-reflection film can effectively reduce the surface reflectivity of solar photovoltaics, increase the transmittance of light, and improve the photoelectric conversion efficiency. The high refractive index coating is an important part of the anti-reflection film. However, the traditional metal oxide coating has poor stability and complicated processes. To address this issue, we prepared two organic high refractive index (HRI) photopolymers by modifying epoxy acrylic acid with 4,4′-thiodibenzenethiol, which can be surface patterned by nanoimprinting to prepare antireflection coatings. As a result, two modified photopolymers with high refractive index (n > 1.63), high optical transmittance (T > 95%), and thermal stability (Tg > 100 °C) are obtained after curing. In particular, the diphenyl sulfide photopolymer modified by ethyl isocyanate acrylate has a refractive index up to 1.667 cured by UV light. Our work confirms that the organic HRI photopolymer can be obtained by introducin... [more]

Review of Study on the Coupled Dynamic Performance of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamic loads, coupled dynamic performance, floating offshore wind turbine, hydrodynamic loads
Floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT) have attracted more and more attention in recent years. However, environmental loads on FOWTs have higher complexity than those on the traditional onshore or fixed-bottom offshore wind turbines. In addition to aerodynamic loads on turbine blades, hydrodynamic loads also act on the support platform. A review on the aerodynamic analysis of blades, hydrodynamic simulation of the supporting platform, and coupled aero- and hydro-dynamic study on FOWTs, is presented in this paper. At present, the primary coupling method is based on the combination of BEM theory and potential flow theory, which can simulate the performance of the FOWT system under normal operating conditions but has certain limitations in solving the complex problem of coupled FOWTs. The more accurate and reliable CFD method used in the research of coupling problems is still in its infancy. In the future, multidisciplinary theories should be used sufficiently to research the coupled dyna... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: absolute energy, acoustic emission, distilling, probsparse self-attention, rockburst prediction, transformer
Rockburst may cause damage to engineering equipment, disrupt construction progress, and endanger human life. To this day, the occurrence of rockburst remains complex and difficult to predict. This study proposes the D-P-Transformer algorithm to address this issue by improving the embedding structure of the Transformer for specific applications to rockburst data. To reduce the computational requirement, sparse self-attention is adopted to replace self-attention. A distilling operation and multiple layer replicas are simultaneously used to enhance the robustness and speed up the algorithm’s process. Taking all relevant rockburst factors into consideration, multiple experiments are conducted on seven large-scale rockburst datasets with different training ratios to verify the reliability of the proposed D-P-Transformer rockburst prediction algorithm. As compared to the original algorithm, the proposed algorithm shows average reductions of 24.45%, 46.56%, 17.32%, and 48.11% in the mean abso... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bellows, compensation behavior, GIS shell, influencing factors, temperature-dependent displacement
Bellows are the key structures that compensate for and absorb the temperature-dependent displacement of a gas insulated switchgear (GIS) shell. It is of great engineering value to master the relationship between the temperature-dependent displacement behavior and various influencing factors. Based on the analysis of the influencing factors of the temperature variation displacement compensation ability of the GIS bellows, a bellows model was established. By coupling it with a shell having different degrees of bending through two layout methods, finite element simulation was carried out based on ABAQUS software to obtain the regular relationship between the temperature variation displacement compensation behavior of the bellows and various influencing factors. The results of the case study show that the temperature change displacement compensation ability of the bellows is most significantly affected by their own structural size. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fire brigade equipment, non road small engine, PPV fan, rescue equipment, tactical fire ventilation
Since there are no legally defined testing requirements for mobile positive pressure fans, they may be tested based on methods that do not correspond to their actual operating conditions. Adequate assessment of the technical and operating conditions for this type of equipment is particularly important for equipment used in rescue operations. Such units should be characterized by efficient and reliable operation. This article investigates the influence of measurement methods of the volumetric airflow rate on the performance of a power unit. The article shows that the applied measurement method, whether it is PN-EN ISO 5801 (test conditions in a pipe duct—Method A) or other methods, i.e., ANSI/AMCA 240-15 and testing of the characteristics of the velocity profile (tests in open flow—Method B), can cause differences in the power demand of fans of from 3.2% to 4.5%. The differences in the requirements of propulsion power translate into fuel consumption and emissions of harmful exhaust gase... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: I-U characteristic analysis, local shadow occlusion, low resistance hot-spot diagnosis, maximum power point tracking, photovoltaic module
In the hot-spot fault of photovoltaic modules, there is a low resistance hot-spot fault caused by crystal defects, such as internal crack and PN junction failure. When the faulty area is partially shaded, it will produce severe temperature rise, accelerate the aging of battery unit, and even cause fire, which will affect the safe operation of the photovoltaic system. In this paper, the low resistance hot-spot fault endangering the safe operation of photovoltaic modules is taken as the research object; the shunt effect of equivalent low resistance caused by crystal defects under local shadow occlusion is explained by using the reverse characteristic of PN junctions of battery units, and its failure mechanism is analyzed. The three working states of the power generation system and the formation conditions of hot-spots in the process of power generation are analyzed in detail. February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: China’s renewable energy consumption, renewable portfolio standards, zero-sum DEA model, ZSG-DEA model
As one of the countries with the most rapid development of new energy, China has been committed to exploring countermeasures to the challenges of new energy consumption. After more than ten years of consideration and consultation, the “renewable portfolio standard“(RPS) for “renewable energy power consumption responsibility weighting” has landed in China. However, in the official affirmation issued by the National Energy Administration, theoretical support for the basis of the initial quota allocation is still lacking. In this study, we examine the efficiency of the weight allocation scheme for renewable energy power consumption responsibilities, which was announced by the National Energy Administration in 2018 and which is based on the BCC-DEA efficiency model. The results indicate that most provinces have low allocation efficiency under this allocation scheme. Therefore, we propose an optimal allocation scheme for a renewable energy consumption quota, based on the ZSG-DEA model. With... [more]

The Dynamic Spillover between Renewable Energy, Crude Oil and Carbon Market: New Evidence from Time and Frequency Domains
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon allowance, COVID-19, crude oil price, renewable energy stocks, spillover effect, technology stocks, time-frequency connectedness
To obtain the price return and price volatility spillovers between renewable energy stocks, technology stocks, oil futures and carbon allowances under different investment horizons, this paper employs a frequency-dependent method to study the dynamic connectedness between these assets in four frequency bands. The results show that, first, there is a strong spillover effect between these assets from a system-wide perspective, and it’s mainly driven by short-term spillovers. Second, in the time domain, technology stocks have a more significant impact on renewable energy stocks compared to crude oil. However, through the study in the frequency domain, we find renewable energy stocks exhibit a more complex relationship with the other two assets at different time scales. Third, renewable energy stocks have significant spillover effect on carbon prices only in the short term. On longer time scales, other factors such as energy prices, climate and policy may have a greater impact on carbon al... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: circuit simulation, finite element method, high voltage engineering, pulsed power generation
Over the years, the use of numerical simulations in the development of high voltage pulse generators has become a standard approach. Nevertheless, the modeling of spark-gaps, one of the most commonly used switching devices in such generators, has always been a weak point of the process, especially in coupled circuit and field simulations. Although the complex SPICE spark-gap models do exist, it is difficult or impossible to directly couple them with field simulations. Thus, in many cases, the spark-gap models used were elementary and required many assumptions, which led to the prolongation of the design process. Our paper describes the coupling of a realistic circuit model of an air spark-gap, with a Finite Element Method simulation, solving the wave equation in the time domain. The simulation describes the operation of a Blumlein transmission line as a pulse generator. One of the advantages of the proposed solution is that the input parameters of the empirical model are measurable phy... [more]
