Experimental Investigation of a Mechanically Stable and Temperature/Salinity Tolerant Biopolymer toward Enhanced Oil Recovery Application in Harsh Condition Reservoirs
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biopolymer, enhanced oil recovery, harsh condition reservoirs, mechanical stability, polymer flooding
In search of robust polymers for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) application in reservoirs with harsh conditions, a water-soluble biopolymer was thoroughly investigated in this work to evaluate its applicability in such reservoirs. The experimental data revealed that compared to the commonly used EOR polymer, HPAM, the biopolymer was more efficient in thickening a brine solution as a result of its peculiar conformation. The presence of an electrolyte has almost no effect on the rheology of the biopolymer solution, even at an extremely high salt concentration (20 wt% NaCl). The relation between viscosity and the concentration curve was well fitted to the power-law model. Moreover, the rigid polymer chains rendered the polymer solution superior tolerance to elevated temperatures and salinity, but also led to considerable retention within tight porous media. The adsorption behavior was characterized by the average thickness of the hydrodynamic adsorbed layer on sand grains. The mechanical deg... [more]

A Predicted-Risk-Based Protection Approach for Turbine Generator Shafts against Fatigue Damage due to Islanding
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed generation, fatigue damage, islanding, shaft, torque, turbine generator
A distributed generation steam turbine generator (hereafter referred to as turbine generator) improves the supply reliability of the local load when operated as a backup supply during islanding. Interconnection standards recommend removing the utility load from the island. Transient torques induced at the moments of islanding and removing the utility load from the island may cause shaft fatigue life loss and lead to fatigue damage. Therefore, a protection method is proposed in this work. The method is based on predicting the risk of shaft fatigue damage. Induced transient torque is first modeled. Fatigue study determines the local load size required to mitigate shaft torsional vibrations and avoid fatigue life loss during islanding. This is substituted in the torque function to obtain the critical torque. The risk of shaft fatigue damage is predicted by comparing the actual shaft torque with the critical torque. The turbine generator is shut down when the actual shaft torque during isl... [more]

An Electrothermal Model to Predict Thermal Characteristics of Lithium-Ion Battery under Overcharge Condition
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrothermal model, lithium-ion battery, overcharge, temperature, thermal behavior
Understanding the thermal characteristics of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) under various operating situations is critical for improving battery safety. Although the application of LIBs in the real world is mostly transient, many previous models consider the phenomenon of the constant state. This study examines thermal behavior by developing a 2D electrothermal model to predict the thermal behavior of LIBs with overcharge abuse in high thermal conditions. The 18,650 cylindrical LiCoO2 graphite is investigated in a thermally controlled chamber at 35, 50, and 60 °C with a K-type thermocouple mounted on the LIB surface under charging rates of 1C, 2C, and 3C to acquire quantitative data regarding the thermal response of LIBs. Maximum critical temperatures are found at 62.6 to 78.9 °C, 66.4 to 83.5 °C, and 72.1 to 86.6 °C at 1C, 2C, and 3C, respectively. Comparing simulation analysis and experimental conditions, the highest relative error of 1.71% was obtained. It was found that relative erro... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dry-out, evaporation heat transfer, evaporative heat transfer, flow boiling, flow pattern map, flow regimes, heat transfer coefficient, intermediate temperature, medium temperature, middle temperature, pressure drop, R744, smooth horizontal tube
In this study, the evaporation heat transfer characteristics of an intermediate temperature of R744 in a smooth horizontal tube, when operating as an indirect refrigeration system (IRS) among hybrid cascade refrigeration systems (HCRSs), are evaluated. Studies on the characteristics of intermediate-temperature evaporation heat transfer under the operating conditions of evaporators used in actual refrigeration systems, such as IRS, cascade refrigeration systems, and HCRS, used in supermarkets are lacking. Thus, this study provides basic data on the characteristics of evaporation heat transfer of R744 in the evaporators of refrigerators used in supermarkets. The tube employed to the evaporation experiment in this study was a horizontal smooth copper tube with a length of 8000 mm and an inner diameter of 11.46 mm. The experimental variables were measured over a wide range of mass flux of 200−500 kg/(m2·s), heat flux of 10−40 kW/m2, and saturation temperature of −40−0 °C. The main results... [more]

Understanding Off-Gassing of Biofuel Wood Pellets Using Pellets Produced from Pure Microcrystalline Cellulose with Different Additive Oils
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: additive oils, cellulose pellets, fatty and resin acids, off-gassing, self-heating, solid biofuels, wood pellets
Fuel wood pellets have the tendency of undergoing self-heating and off-gassing during storage and transportation. Self-heating can lead to spontaneous combustion and cause fires while toxic gasses such as carbon monoxide and some volatile organic compounds released due to off-gassing are a human health and environmental hazard. Previous research suggests that the self-heating and off-gassing of wood pellets are as a result of the oxidation of wood extractives. The aim of this study was to identify the extractives, i.e., fatty and resin acids that are responsible for the emissions of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methane from wood pellets by testing the off-gassing tendencies of pellets produced from synthetic microcrystalline cellulose and different additive oils. The additive oils were intentionally selected to represent different types of wood extractives (mainly fatty and resin acids) and they included: tall oil, pine rosin, linseed oil and coconut oil. Prediction Method for Surface Subsidence of Coal Seam Mining in Loess Donga Based on the Probability Integration Model
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: additional displacement of slope mining slip, loess donga, probability integration, superimposed calculation, surface subsidence
The accurate prediction of surface subsidence is a significant foundation for the damage assessment of coal seam mining and ecological environment reclamation in loess donga. However, conventional models are very problematic, and the reliability of prediction is usually low. Therefore, we propose a method for predicting surface subsidence of coal seam mining in loess donga that is based on the probability integration model, combined with the movement principle of rock and soil layers in the respective study area, and considering the influence of slope stability and additional mining slip on mining subsidence. The feasibility of our new method was verified by a case study in the N1114 working face of the Ningtiaota coal mine (China) that is situated in an area with abundant loess dongas. The results show that slope slippage is the source of error in the prediction of subsidence in loess donga. Study on Geometric Characteristics and Quantitative Description Method of Casing Deformation during Shale Reservoir Hydraulic Fracturing
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: casing deformation, geometric characteristics, quantitative analysis description, shale
Casing deformation is a common but serious problem experienced during hydraulic fracturing operations in shale reservoirs. The Multi-Finger Imaging Tool is used to measure the casing deformation where the casing inner diameter is the only parameter used to characterize the deformation. Many deformed casing geometric details are often ignored, and these geometric characteristics are helpful for revealing the casing deformation mechanism. In this study, we established a quantitative method to describe the casing deformation using methods of judging the similarity of curves. By comparing the field casing deformation sections and the initial casing section, we categorized the casing deformation sections into concave and elliptical types. Furthermore, using the centroid calculation, elliptical type was sub-divided into symmetric ellipse type and eccentric ellipse type. On the basis of the Weiyuan and Guandong oil field’s fault distribution maps, we demonstrated that the fault slip could be... [more]

Qualitative Analysis of Household Energy Awareness in Poland
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: customer awareness, Energy, interrelationship diagram, Ishikawa diagram, model of the causes of increasing energy consumption in households, Pareto–Lorenz diagram
Because of disruptive changes in energy businesses and services, as well as changes in people’s lifestyles around the world, energy demand and consumption have risen quickly in recent decades. A household energy awareness literature review was conducted. The survey was conducted in Poland with over 1097 respondents. Additionally, it was given a qualitative analysis. At the same time, in order to consider why energy consumption in households is increasing, a traditional quality management tool was used—the Ishikawa diagram. The Pareto−Lorenz diagram was used to analyze the causes of the increase in energy consumption in households. A model of the causes of increasing energy consumption in households has been built. The researchers calculated the chi-square test, which allows them to determine Pearson’s C coefficient. The C-Pearson coefficient can be calculated using the Chi square value. The results of the study clearly show that the respondents have knowledge of energy and the factors... [more]

Single-Phase Charging of EV Embedded Batteries in an MMC with Submodule Override Capability
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: charging, EV, MMC-EB, SOC balancing
The modular multilevel converter with embedded batteries is a viable alternative in electric vehicle drive systems. This research investigates integrated charging of the embedded batteries in a three-phase converter from a single-phase source without any additional hardware requirements. Two phases of the converter are connected to the supply while the third converter leg is not connected. In a typical charging of the converter batteries, the batteries with a lower state of charge are prioritised. Then all batteries are balanced at an average global state of charge. This research proposes a new sorting algorithm of the converter batteries with an override capability to bypass any individual submodule if required. This bypassing capability is modulation method independent, thus can be integrated with any modulation method. Simulation results and a real-time emulation of the charging system validate the proposed control method and the override algorithm. In addition, an open-loop switchi... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DFIG, identifiability, parameter estimation, PSD sensitivity, weighted Levenberg–Marquardt method
In this paper, a new method using wind turbulence excitation is proposed to estimate the parameters of the mechanical system (drivetrain and pitch angle controller) in a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) Wind Turbine (WT). Firstly, simulations were carried out for a DFIG WT under turbulence excitations. The spectral contents of the responses imply that the transients of the electrical system (generator and converter), which are much faster than those of the mechanical system, can be neglected when estimating the mechanical parameters. Based on this, a simplified model related to the mechanical system of the DFIG WT was derived by applying the model reduction technique. Secondly, the parameter sensitivity of Power Spectral Density (PSD) was used to quantify the impacts of individual parameters on the dynamics of the mechanical system, and the influential parameters were selected on the basis of the sensitivity results. Finally, a weighted least-squares optimization problem, which is... [more]

The paper presents chosen experimental and model methods of investigating heat transfer in a steel porous charge. The results of this investigation provide information on both the qualitative and quantitative course of the analysed processes of heat exchange. The parameters which characterise the analysed phenomenon in a quantitative manner, among others, are: The effective thermal conductivity kef, the thermal contact resistance Rct and Nusselt number Nu. It has been established that it is not possible to use literature models in order to determine the kef coefficient. The authors present their own model of effective thermal conductivity. The above-mentioned parameters for a porous charge reach the values within the following ranges: kef: 1.0−8.5 W/(m·K); Rct: 0.0019−0.0057 (m2⋅K)/W; Nu: 1.2−7.1.

Investigating Optimum Cooling Set Point Temperature and Air Velocity for Thermal Comfort and Energy Conservation in Mixed-Mode Buildings in India
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: elevated air speed, energy consumption in buildings, mixed-mode buildings, set point temperature, thermal comfort
In warm and hot climates, ceiling fans and/or air conditioners (ACs) are used to maintain thermal comfort. Ceiling fans provide air movement near the skin, which enhances the evaporation of sweat, reduces heat stress, and enhances thermal comfort. This is also called the cooling effect. However, AC usage behaviour and the effects of elevated air speed through the use of ceiling fans on indoor operative temperature during AC usage are not widely studied. This study investigated the optimum AC (cooling) set point temperature and air velocity necessary for maintaining thermal comfort while achieving energy conservation, in mixed-mode buildings in India, through field studies by using used custom-built Internet of Things (IOT) devices. In the current study, the results indicate a 79% probability that comfort conditions can be maintained by achieving a temperature drop of 3K. If this drop can be achieved, as much as possible, through passive measures, the duration of AC operation and its en... [more]

Analysis of Efficiency of Thermopressor Application for Internal Combustion Engine
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, engine, heat recovery boiler, thermopressor, turbocharger
Contact cooling using thermopressor technologies is a promising direction for the development of energy-efficient technologies. This technology is based on the implementation of the thermo-gas-dynamic compression effect in special contact heat exchangers that consists of increasing the pressure while decreasing the temperature during the evaporation of a finely dispersed liquid injected into a gas flow moving at a speed close to sound. Upon application of the thermopressor for charge air cooling of the engine, the following result was obtained: an increase in the air pressure after the turbocharger by 340 to 480 kPa. The thermopressor can be used as a boost stage after the turbocharger, resulting in the reduction of a basic turbocharger compression work and the increase of engine power output accordingly. Reducing the work allows for the same air flow rate on the internal combustion engine to reduce the compressor power by 10 to 12%. This increases the temperature of the exhaust gases... [more]

Current Research Trends in the Process of Condensation of Cooling Zeotropic Mixtures in Compact Condensers
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: condensation, heat exchangers, temperature glide, zeotropic mixtures
This paper is an introduction to the cycle proposed by the authors related to research directions concerning the problems of condensation of zeotropic refrigerant mixtures. For over a hundred years, research has been conducted on the search for new working fluids in the cycles for cooling devices and heat pumps. Initially, the natural refrigerants used were replaced with homogeneous synthetic refrigerants, followed by mixtures of two or more refrigerants. Among the mixtures, there are azeotropic and zeotropic mixtures. In the case of an azeotrope mixture, a liquid solution of two or more chemical compounds is in thermodynamic equilibrium with the saturated vapor resulting from this mixture. The chemical composition of the liquid and vapor is identical. A zeotropic mixture is a liquid-vapor system in which the composition of a liquid mixture (solution) of two or more chemical compounds is always different from that of the saturated vapor generated from this liquid. This is due to the di... [more]

A Simplified Modeling Approach of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines for Dynamic Simulations
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aerodynamics, floating offshore wind turbine, FOWT dynamics, hydrodynamics, simplified model, structural dynamics
Currently, floating offshore wind is experiencing rapid development towards a commercial scale. However, the research to design new control strategies requires numerical models of low computational cost accounting for the most relevant dynamics. In this paper, a reduced linear time-domain model is presented and validated. The model represents the main floating offshore wind turbine dynamics with four planar degrees of freedom: surge, heave, pitch, first tower fore-aft deflection, and rotor speed to account for rotor dynamics. The model relies on multibody and modal theories to develop the equation of motion. Aerodynamic loads are calculated using the wind turbine power performance curves obtained in a preprocessing step. Hydrodynamic loads are precomputed using a panel code solver and the mooring forces are obtained using a look-up table for different system displacements. Without any adjustment, the model accurately predicts the system motions for coupled stochastic wind−wave conditio... [more]

A Versatile Model for Estimating the Fuel Consumption of a Wide Range of Transport Modes
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery electric vehicle, fuel cell electric vehicle, longitudinal vehicle models, transport energy demand, vehicle electrification, vehicle fuel consumption
The importance of a flexible and comprehensive vehicle fuel consumption model cannot be understated for understanding the implications of the modal changes currently occurring in the transportation sector. In this study, a model is developed to determine the tank-to-wheel energy demand for passenger and freight transportation within Germany for different modes of transport. These modes include light-duty vehicles (LDVs), heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs), airplanes, trains, ships, and unmanned aviation. The model further estimates future development through 2050. Utilizing standard driving cycles, backward-looking longitudinal vehicle models are employed to determine the energy demand for all on-road vehicle modes. For non-road vehicle modes, energy demand from the literature is drawn upon to develop the model. It is found that various vehicle parameters exert different effects on vehicle energy demand, depending on the driving scenario. Public transportation offers the most energy-efficient... [more]

Keywords: battery retirement, dual Kalman filter, Kalman filter, lithium battery, sliding innovation filter, state of charge, state of health
Accurate estimation of a battery’s capacity is critical for determining its state of health (SOH) and retirement, as well as to ensure its reliable operation. In this paper, a dual filter architecture using the Kalman filter (KF) and the novel sliding innovation filter (SIF) was implemented to estimate the capacity and state of charge (SOC) of a lithium-ion battery. NASA’s Prognostic Center of Excellence (PCOE) B005 battery data set was selected for this experiment based on its wide use in academia and industry. This dataset contains cycling data of a 2 Ah lithium-ion battery until its capacity was measured at 1.3 Ah or less. The dual polarity equivalent circuit model (DP-ECM) was selected for modeling. The model parameter values were estimated using the least squares (LS) algorithm. Under normal operating conditions, both the dual-KF and dual-SIF performed similarly in terms of estimation accuracy. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electricity theft, non-technical electricity losses, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, transmission and distribution losses
Non-technical loss of electricity (comprising theft, fraud, non-payment and billing irregularities) is a significant issue, particularly in developing countries, and represents a large financial burden on utility companies, governments and society as a whole. This paper takes a wholistic and global view of the challenge and provides a broad perspective of the interrelated issues. Media reports and public perception of non-technical losses tend to focus on residential consumers, particularly those with limited financial resources, whereas review of more robust literature indicates that the largest proportion of non-technical losses is often due to industry, state-owned enterprises and relatively well-off residential consumers. Measures to reduce non-technical losses focusing on average residential consumers, such as pre-paid metering, therefore have limited effect on overall losses. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal strata, dominant far-offset, pre-stack AVO forward, reservoir prediction, seismic response
The sandstone reservoir of the Pinghu Formation in the Xihu Depression, East China Sea is characterized by great depth, small thickness, radical facies change and a widespread coal bed. It is difficult to describe the reservoir accurately using conventional reservoir prediction methods. In order to analyze the influence of coal-bearing strata on the prediction of the mid-low thickness sandstone reservoir, the seismic response of different sandstone−coal stratigraphic assemblages was simulated by seismic forward modeling. The modeling result indicates that the post-stack seismic response is dominated by coal bed, whereas the response of sandstone can hardly be recognized. In contrast, the difference between the pre-stack AVO (amplitude versus offset) response characteristics of coal seams and gas-bearing sandstones has been clarified based on the statistics pertaining to AVO characteristics of drilled wells. Therefore, we propose a method to reduce the interference of coal beds in sands... [more]
