Esin Apaydın Varol, Ülker Mutlu
May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: olive pomace, pinecone, pyrolysis, sunflower waste, TGA-FTIR
The slow pyrolysis characteristics of lignocellulosic biomass and its three major components via a Thermogravimetric Analyzer coupled with a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (TGA-FTIR) was studied. Different compositions and ratios of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, olive pomace, sunflower waste, and pinecone were selected. The main decomposition temperature ranges of xylose (hemicellulose) and lignin showed a broad range between 173−690 and 170−835 °C, respectively, whereas that of cellulose was detected to be 291−395 °C. All biomass samples presented a three-stage pyrolysis model that is explained by the superposition of the weight losses of major components. Simultaneous FTIR analysis of the evolved gases demonstrated that the greater the cellulose and hemicellulose contents, the higher the CO and CO2 concentrations. Chemical kinetics were computed with the Coats−Redfern model. The activation energy required for the initiation of the thermal decomposition of biomass sam... [more]

Zhiliang Lei, Zewei Bao
May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: circular tube, n-decane, pyrolysis, rectangular tube, supercritical heat transfer
In this research, the effects of different channel cross-section shapes on the flow, heat transfer and pyrolysis characteristics of n-decane were analyzed and compared based on CFD simulations. The interactions between cracking, heat transfer and flow field in a circular tube and a rectangular tube were studied. The results showed that the mean pressure drop in the rectangular channel is 1.18 times as high as that in the circular channel with pyrolysis due to its smaller equivalent diameter. The maximum value of the chemical heat sink in the rectangular channel is 1.6 times as high as that in the circular channel. The high temperature zone of any cross section in the rectangular channel is much larger than that in the circular channel due to the superposition of the boundary layer and lower turbulent kinetic energy in the corners of the rectangular channel. The maximum value of the Nu in the circular channel is 1.3 times as high as that in the rectangular channel with pyrolysis due to... [more]

May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carbon corrosion, durability, heteroatom-doped carbon, PEMFC
Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) are currently considered the most advanced fuel cell technology. However, the industrial implementation of PEMFCs is strongly hindered by deficient durability, especially that of the carbonaceous materials commonly used to support the platinum-based catalyst nanoparticles, which are prone to electrochemical corrosion at the cathode, resulting in a serious performance loss of the entire cell. In the attempt to overcome this issue, many research groups have tried to introduce heteroatoms (N, S, B, P) into the carbon lattice, thus trying to make the electrode corrosion-resistant. Newly developed heteroatom-doped carbons were subjected to corrosion tests in half-cell and single-cell systems to evaluate their stability. This paper reviews the recent studies devoted to corrosion research of heteroatom-doped carbon supports for Pt-based catalysts in PEMFCs. In particular, an overview on N, B, and S dopants and their effects on carbon corrosion i... [more]

May 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flow improver, nanoparticle, pour point, wax deposition, waxy crude
High molecular weight paraffin/wax precipitates in the solution of crude oil when the surrounding temperature falls below the wax appearance temperature, which causes the problem of wax deposition in pipelines. To enhance the rheology of the crude oil and lessen wax deposition, pour point depressants (PPDs) and flow enhancers were utilized. These substances change the wax crystals’ morphology, reducing crystal interlocking and preventing wax agglomeration from facilitating wax dispersion. However, recent research prompted a further investigation to improve the performance of conventional polymeric PPD and to address wax accumulation in a safe and environmentally responsible way. This is because of their poor performance at high shearing, expensive preparations, limited biodegradability, and toxicity. The primary objective of this study is to provide a thorough summary of current studies on the use of seed oil extracts rich in unsaturated fatty acids as an alternative for polymeric PPD.... [more]

Keywords: DFIG steady-state model, load flow, power system, wind farm
Penetration of wind power plants (WPPs) in the electric power system will complicate the system load flow analysis. Consequently, the traditional load flow algorithm can no longer be used to find the solution to the load flow problem of such a system. This paper proposes a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based WPP model for a load flow analysis of the electric power system. The proposed model is derived based on the power formulations of the WPP—namely, DFIG power, DFIG power loss, and WPP power output formulas. The model can be applied to various DFIG power factor operating modes. In the present paper, applications of the proposed methods in two representative electric power systems (i.e., IEEE 14-bus and 30-bus systems) have been investigated. The investigation results verify the proposed method’s capability to solve the load flow problem of the system embedded with DFIG-based variable-speed WPPs.

Keywords: incineration, methane, Mexico City, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, waste-to-energy
This research aims to compare, from a technical and financial perspective, the application of biological (methane-capture) and thermal (incineration) treatments of waste in Mexico City in order to generate clean energy. For each alternative, pessimist (50%), realistic (80%), and optimistic (100%) scenarios were considered in terms of the efficiency collection rates of methane and the efficiency of the capacity conversion factor for incineration. For the methane project, the LandGEM model was used to evaluate the potential generation of methane. In order to calculate the electricity output that could be generated through incineration, we relied on two key factors: the total amount of heat that could be generated by burning the waste and the average level of moisture in the waste material. The evaluation resulted in an annual energy generation of 206.09 GWh for methane and 4183.39 GWh for incineration, both in the realistic scenario. Both projects reported positive financial indicators w... [more]

Recently, the development of integrated inverters for photovoltaic systems has been widely performed to reduce overall system size, costs, and losses. Thus, integrated inverters have emerged as a prominent solution for replacing two-stage power conversion composed of a step-up converter and a voltage source inverter. Thereby, this paper proposes an integrated inverter topology for single-phase grid-tied photovoltaic systems. The proposed power converter, called a Single-Phase Integrated Zeta Inverter (SP-IZI), can boost the input voltage and inject a sinusoidal and regulated current into the mains with low harmonic distortion. The SP-IZI is based on integrating modified DC-DC Zeta converters, designed and controlled to operate in a discontinuous conduction mode, and presents similarities with the Modified Zeta Inverter (MZI). In this way, this paper compares the main parameters of both topologies and provides a complete study of the SP-IZI, involving both quantitative and qualitative s... [more]

Keywords: halide perovskites, solar cells, thermal stability, thermoplastic additives
The commercialization of perovskite solar cells is hindered by the poor thermal stability of organic−inorganic hybrid perovskite materials. Herein, we demonstrate that crystalline thermoplastic polymer additives, such as a mixture of polyethylene oxide (PEO, 100,000 MW) and polyethylene glycol (PEG, 12,000 MW), can improve the thermal stability of CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPbI3) perovskites and thereby enhance device stability. High-quality less-defect perovskite films were obtained by establishing a strong reaction between hydroxy groups in the PEO + PEG mixture and the uncoordinated Pb2+ in MAPbI3 perovskites, leading to a high power conversion efficiency of over 18% despite the presence of insulating thermoplastic polymers in the MAPbI3 film. More importantly, as compared with pristine MAPbI3 perovskite solar cells, the PEO + PEG-modified counterparts showed significantly improved stability under thermal treatment at 85 °C in ambient air with a relative humidity of 50−60%, remaining at nearly 7... Currently, the issue of creating decarbonized energy systems in various spheres of life is acute. Therefore, for gas turbine power systems including hybrid power plants with fuel cells, it is relevant to transfer the existing engines to pure hydrogen or mixtures of hydrogen with natural gas. However, significant problems arise associated with the possibility of the appearance of flashback zones and acoustic instability of combustion, an increase in the temperature of the walls of the flame tubes, and an increase in the emission of nitrogen oxides, in some cases. This work is devoted to improving the efficiency of gas turbine power systems by combusting pure hydrogen and mixtures of natural gas with hydrogen. The organization of working processes in the premixed combustion chamber and the combustion chamber with a sequential injection of ecological and energy steam for the “Aquarius” type power plant is considered. The conducted studies of the basic aerodynamic and energy parameters of... [more]

Keywords: automotive battery, NDIR gas sensor, overcharge, thermal runaway
This paper proposes to apply a newly developed Non-Dispersive Infrared Spectroscopy (NDIR) gas sensing system composed of pyroelectric infrared detectors to monitor the thermal runaway (TR) process of lithium-ion batteries in real time and achieve an early warning system for the battery TR process. The new Electrical Vehicle Safety—Global Technical Regulation (EVS-GTR) requires that a warning be provided to passengers at least five minutes before a serious incident. The experimental results indicate that carbon dioxide and methane gas were detected during the overcharge test of the automotive battery, and the target gas was detected 25 s in advance before the battery TR when the battery vent was closed. In order to further explore the battery TR mechanism, an experiment was carried out using the battery sample with the battery vent opened. The target gas was detected about 580 s before the battery temperature reached the common alarm temperature (60 °C) of the battery management system... [more]

Keywords: DFT, diglycolamides, Extraction, irradiation, radiolytic stability, spent nuclear fuel
Radiolytic stability is one of the main requirements of the ligands for the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. The prediction of radiation stability based only on the 2D molecular structural formula allows us to accelerate and simplify the development of new ligands. Here, we used quantum chemistry to investigate the radiolytic behavior of water-soluble diglycolamides as one of the most popular ligands for spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. The accurate accounting of conformational mobility in the descriptors based on the Frontier Orbital Fukui theory allowed us to obtain a good correlation between theoretical and experimental data.

Keywords: decarbonisation, education, energy vector, Hydrogen, implementation, regulation, reskilling
Humankind has an urgent need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Such a challenge requires deep transformation of the current energy system in our society. Achieving this goal has given an unprecedented role to decarbonized energy vectors. Electricity is the most consolidated of such vectors, and a molecular vector is in the agenda to contribute in the future to those end uses that are difficult to electrify. Additionally, energy storage is a critical issue for both energy vectors. In this communication, discussion on the status, hopes and perspectives of the hydrogen contribution to decarbonization are presented, emphasizing bottlenecks in key aspects, such as education, reskilling and storage capacity, and some concerns about the development of a flexible portfolio of technologies that could affect the contribution and impact of the whole hydrogen value chain in society. This communication would serve to the debate and boost discussion about the topic.

Keywords: electrical machine, experimental investigation, heat pipe, inclination angle, temperature distribution, temperature nonuniformity
Heat pipes (HPs) are gaining increasing popularity in the propulsion motors of transportation electrification due to their remarkable thermal properties. However, the inclination angle affects the HP thermal performance and, thus, results in temperature nonuniformity, which may generate unbalanced thermal stress on the motor. Such an issue has received less attention to date and requires corresponding solutions. This article performs an experimental investigation on motor temperature nonuniformity with HPs and further proposes an improved structure to address this problem. A specimen based on a stator-winding assembly with HPs is prepared and a dedicated experimental platform is established. Then, the temperature distribution across the specimen is studied, followed by an evaluation of the effects of current density and wind velocity. To compensate for the degradation of HP thermal performance, an improved structure with enlarged fins is proposed, and the equilibrium point is determine... [more]

Keywords: burnup uncertainty analysis, fission product yield, pebble-bed HTGR
Quantifying fission product yield uncertainty contribution to reactor burnup calculation is an important aspect of pebble-bed High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (pebble-bed HTGR) uncertainty analysis. In this work, uncertainty propagation of fission product yield to pebble-bed HTGR burnup calculation is conducted. Uncertainty of fission product yields from four fissile isotopes, namely 233U, 235U, 239Pu and 241Pu, are considered. The stochastic sampling-based uncertainty analysis method is adopted and fission product yield covariance matrices are estimated from ENDF/B-VII.1. The covariance matrix for each fissile actinide is estimated based on the Bayesian method and fission product yields are assigned with log-normal distribution in the sampling process with the Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) method. Since the fission fraction from 239Pu plays an important role in fissions of fuels with high burnup value in pebble-bed HTGR, the fission product yield uncertainty contribution from 239P... [more]
