Low-Emission Alternative Energy for Transport in the EU: State of Play of Research and Innovation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alcohols, Energy Efficiency, esters and ethers, liquefied petroleum gas, methane-based fuels, synthetic paraffinic and aromatic fuels
The 2030 Climate target plan of the European Commission (EC) establishes a greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions reduction target of at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990. It highlights that all transport modes—road, rail, aviation and waterborne—will have to contribute to this aim. A smart combination of vehicle/vessel/aircraft efficiency improvements, as well as fuel mix changes, are among the measures that can reduce GHG emissions, reducing at the same time noise pollution and improving air quality. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of recent research and innovation in low-emission alternative energy for transport (excluding hydrogen) in selected European Union (EU)-funded projects. It considers the latest developments in the field, identifying relevant researched technologies by fuel type and their development phase. The results show that liquefied natural gas (LNG) refueling stations, followed by biofuels for road transport and alternative aviation fuels, are among the r... [more]

Adaptive Protection Coordination Method Design of Remote Microgrid for Three-Phase Short Circuit Fault
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive protection, ESS, relay, remote microgrid, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, short circuit fault
Generally, the fault current supplied by inverter-based renewable energy sources (IBRES) and electrical storage systems (ESS) is about 1.2 to 2 times their rated current and much lower than synchronous generators because the former acts as a current source and the latter acts as a voltage source. A conventional power system in a small island is composed of only synchronous generators and protected from short circuit faults using an overcurrent relay (OCR). However, in the remote microgrid with IBRES, ESS, and synchronous generators, the fault current varies depending on the configuration of generation sources. Namely, the fixed OCR protection method cannot protect microgrids from short circuit faults. This paper proposes an adaptive protection method to protect the microgrid from faults by actively changing the OCR setting according to the state of the generator source combination. A microgrid with ESS and a synchronous generator is modeled and simulated through PSCAD/EMTDC software to... [more]

Synergies between Renewable Energy and Flexibility Investments: A Case of a Medium-Sized Industry
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: demand-side management, hydrogen economy, investment, Optimization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Climate and energy policies are tools used to steer the development of a sustainable economy supplied by equally sustainable energy systems. End-users should plan their investments accounting for future policies, such as incentives for system-oriented consumption, emission prices and hydrogen economy, to ensure long-term competitiveness. In this work, the utilization of variable renewable energy and flexibility potentials in a case study of an aggregate industry is investigated. An energy concept considering PV and battery expansion, flexible production, fuel cell electric trucks (FCEV) and hydrogen production is proposed, and analysed under expected techno-economic conditions and policies of 2030 using an energy system optimization model. Under this concept, total costs and emissions are reduced by 14% and 70%, respectively, compared to the business-as-usual system. The main benefit of PV investment is the lowered electricity procurement. Flexibility from schedulable manufacturing and... [more]

Feasibility of Using Electrodes with Ultralow Pt Loading in Two-Chamber Microbial Electrolysis Cells
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cathode, electrode size, energy recovery, hydrogen production, microbial electrolysis cell, Pt loading
Decreasing the Pt loading and surface area of the cathode was found to accelerate the hydrogen evolution reaction in microbial electrolysis cells (MEC) at low substrate concentrations. The experimental wire cathode used in this study had a reduced Pt loading of 20 µg Pt/cm2 and only 14% of the surface area of the control disk-type cathode. With the wire cathodes, peak current densities of 33.1 ± 2.3 A/m2 to 30.4 ± 0.5 A/m2 were obtained at substrate concentrations of 0.4 g/L and 1.0 g/L, respectively, which were 5.4 to 6.2 times higher than those obtained with the disk electrode (5.1−5.7 A/m2). The higher cathode overpotentials and higher current densities obtained with the wire electrode compared to those observed with the disk electrode were advantageous for hydrogen recovery, energy recovery efficiencies, and the hydrogen volume produced (8.5 ± 1.2 mL at 0.4 g/L to 23.0 ± 2.2 mL at 1.0 g/L with the wire electrode; 6.8 ± 0.4 mL at 0.4 g/L to 21.8 ± 2.2 mL at 1.0 g/L with the disk ele... Operation of Distributed Battery Considering Demand Response Using Deep Reinforcement Learning in Grid Edge Control
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deep reinforcement learning (DRL), demand response (DR), distributed battery energy storage system (BESS), grid edge control, multi-agent algorithm, three-phase unbalance
Battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are able to facilitate economical operation of the grid through demand response (DR), and are regarded as the most significant DR resource. Among them, distributed BESS integrating home photovoltaics (PV) have developed rapidly, and account for nearly 40% of newly installed capacity. However, the use scenarios and use efficiency of distributed BESS are far from sufficient to be able to utilize the potential loads and overcome uncertainties caused by disorderly operation. In this paper, the low-voltage transformer-powered area (LVTPA) is firstly defined, and then a DR grid edge controller was implemented based on deep reinforcement learning to maximize the total DR benefits and promote three-phase balance in the LVTPA. The proposed DR problem is formulated as a Markov decision process (MDP). In addition, the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm is applied to train the controller in order to learn the optimal DR strategy. Additionally... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building energy system optimization, life cycle emission, renewable energy retrofit
Due to the high energy consumption of buildings, there is a demand for both economically and environmentally effective designs for building energy system retrofits. While multi-objective optimization can be used to solve complicated problems, its use is not yet widespread in the industry. This study first aims to develop an efficient and applicable multi-objective building energy system optimization method, used to dimension energy production and storage retrofit components in a case campus building in Lahti, Finland. Energy consumption data of the building are obtained with a dynamic energy model. The optimization model includes economic and environmental objectives, and the approach is found to function satisfactorily. Second, this study aims to assess the feasibility and issues of multi-objective single-building energy system optimization via the analysis of the case optimization results. The results suggest that economically beneficial local energy production and storage retrofits... [more]

Relationship among Economic Growth (GDP), Energy Consumption and Carbon Dioxide Emission: Evidence from V4 Countries
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, cointegration, economic growth, emissions, energy consumption, V4 countries
The main objective of the research was to determine the long-term and short-term correlation between CO2 emissions per capita, energy consumption per capita, and the level of economic growth of GDP per capita in the V4 countries. These countries, being EU members since 2004 and previously being in the sphere of influence of the Soviet Union, have introduced a number of economic reforms, but in the area of climate protection, including decarbonization, they struggle with many problems, as their economies are largely dependent on energy from non-renewable resources. The results of the research are varied, but the authors confirmed, especially in the case of Poland, the long-term correlations between the studied variables. In the short term, such interdependencies also occurred, especially between the level of energy consumption per capita and the level of CO2 emissions.

DC Communities: Transformative Building Blocks of the Emerging Energy Infrastructure
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC community, DC microgrid, DC power system, distribution grid, energy infrastructure
Serious environmental concerns call for revolutionary solutions to cope with the harmful effects of the conventional energy landscape. Therefore, residential and commercial customers require cleaner and more reliable energy sources as they become more dependent on energy for daily and critical needs. In this case, transitioning to a cleaner energy economy is of paramount importance for both the environment and the utilities as well as the end-users. The desired transformation will require the deployment of massive amounts of clean energy sources. Many of these resources, such as solar photovoltaic (PV), provide electricity in the form of direct current (DC) that enables the return of DC grids to the electric power arena. The electric system has slowly transitioned to DC, mainly on the demand side. In recent years, modern electronic devices, lighting systems, and an increased number of appliances (≈22% of the residential and commercial loads) have adopted DC systems. Studies suggest tha... The Effect of Hydraulic Fracture Geometry on Well Productivity in Shale Oil Plays with High Pore Pressure
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: high pore pressure, horizontal fractures, natural fractures, reverse faulting, shale condensate and oil, shale gas, strike-slip faulting stress state
We propose three idealized hydraulic fracture geometries (“fracture scenarios”) likely to occur in shale oil reservoirs characterized by high pore pressure and low differential in situ stresses. We integrate these geometries into a commercial reservoir simulator (CMG-IMEX) and examine their effect on reservoir fluids production. Our first, reference fracture scenario includes only vertical, planar hydraulic fractures. The second scenario has stimulated vertical natural fractures oriented perpendicularly to the vertical hydraulic fractures. The third fracture scenario has stimulated horizontal bedding planes intersecting the vertical hydraulic fractures. This last scenario may occur in mudrock plays characterized by high pore pressure and transitional strike-slip to reverse faulting stress regimes. We demonstrate that the vertical and planar fractures are an oversimplification of the hydraulic fracture geometry in anisotropic shale plays. They fail to represent the stimulated volume geo... Energetic and Exergetic Performances of a Retrofitted, Large-Scale, Biomass-Fired CHP Coupled to a Steam-Explosion Biomass Upgrading Plant, a Biorefinery Process and a High-Temperature Heat Network
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
This paper aims at assessing the impact of retrofitting an existing, 730 MWe, coal-fired power plant into a biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant on its energetic and exergetic performances. A comprehensive thermodynamic model of the power plant was developed and validated against field data, resulting in less than 1% deviation between the model and the measurements for the main process parameters. The validated model was then used to predict the behaviour of the biomass CHP after retrofitting. The modelled CHP unit is coupled to a steam-explosion biomass upgrading plant, a biorefinery process, and a high-temperature heat network. 13 scenarios were studied. At constant boiler load, delivering heat to the considered heat clients can increase the total energy efficiency of the plant from 44% (electricity only) to 64%, while the total exergy efficiency decreases from 39% to 35%. A total energy efficiency of 67% could be reached by lowering the network temperature from 120∘C to... [more]

Analysis of LLL System Properties for Different Excitation Parameters
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: lighting engineering, Low Location Lighting system, photoluminescent lighting system
Photoluminescent strips forming a Low Location Lighting (LLL) system are the primary method for marking escape routes on passenger ships. The LLL system can be built as a self-luminous system (powered by electricity) or made as a series of strips made of photoluminescent materials, which glow and indicate the escape route after the loss of basic and emergency lighting. To ensure correct visual guidance, these strips must be installed at specific locations in the passageways and achieve appropriate photometric parameters after a certain time from their activation. The properties of the LLL system depend on the type of luminescent material used, the excitation source, and the exposure parameters. This paper presents the results of laboratory tests on two types of photoluminescent materials used for the construction of LLL systems. We recorded the change in luminance after the loss of excitation and measured the luminance values obtained 10 and 60 min after the loss of excitation under ex... [more]

Ground Fracture Development and Surface Fracture Evolution in N00 Method Shallowly Buried Thick Coal Seam Mining in an Arid Windy and Sandy Area: A Case Study of the Ningtiaota Mine (China)
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ground deformation, ground fissures, ground subsidence, N00 method, windy sandy area
An observatory was established at the Ningtiaota Mine (China) in order to investigate the surface deformation pattern of N00 method workings mining in shallow buried thick coal seams in a windy-sand area. The observatory allows one to measure the coupling between the periodic changes of parameters related to ground subsidence and ground cracks with workings advancement. The data monitored in the field indicate that when the adjacent mining workings are mined below the ground, a sinkhole basin with a larger impact area will be formed. New ground fractures are formed above the mining area to connect with the fractures above the mining face. As a consequence a new pattern of “O” circle distribution beyond the working face is formed, which develops rapidly during the working face recovery. In addition, the dynamic fractures in coal mining are characterized by the phenomenon of self-healing. Our findings will help to protect the surface environment of the mine area during shallow buried hig... [more]

Grid-Following Mode Operation of Small-Scale Distributed Battery Energy Storages for Fast Frequency Regulation in a Mixed-Source Microgrid
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage, droop and VSG control, frequency control, islanded microgrid, model-based control
As the share of power converter-based renewable energy sources (RESs) is high, a microgrid, in islanded mode, is more vulnerable to frequency instability due to (1) sudden power imbalance and (2) low inertia. One of the most common approaches to address this issue is to provide virtual inertia to the system by appropriately controlling the grid-side converter of the RESs. However, the primary frequency controller (PFC) presented in this paper focuses on the fast compensation of power imbalance without adding inertia to the system. The proposed method is based on estimating the real-time power imbalance caused by a disturbance and compensating it using multiple small-scale distributed battery energy storage systems (BESSs). The power imbalance is estimated by observing the initial rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) following a disturbance. Based on the estimated power imbalance and the rating of the BESSs, the reference power for the BESSs is determined. The BESSs are controlled in gri... [more]

A Rapid Compression Machine Study of 2-Phenylethanol Autoignition at Low-To-Intermediate Temperatures
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 2-phenylethanol, autoignition, low temperature chemistry, rapid compression machine
To meet the increasing anti-knocking quality demand of boosted spark-ignition engines, fuel additives are considered an effective approach to tailor fuel properties for satisfying the performance requirements. Thus, screening/developing bio-derived fuel additives that are best-suited for advanced spark-ignition engines has become a significant task. 2-Phenylethanol (2-PE) is an attractive candidate that features high research octane number, high octane sensitivity, low vapor pressure, and high energy density. Recognizing that the low temperature autoignition chemistry of 2-PE is not well understood and the need for fundamental experimental data at engine-relevant conditions, rapid compression machine (RCM) experiments are therefore conducted herein to measure ignition delay times (IDTs) of 2-PE in air over a wide range of conditions to fill this fundamental void. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical differentiable model, control-oriented model, liquid water effects, physically motivated model, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, water modeling
Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are prone to membrane dehydration and liquid water flooding, negatively impacting their performance and lifetime. Therefore, PEMFCs require appropriate water management, which makes accurate water modeling indispensable. Unfortunately, available control-oriented models only replicate individual water-related aspects or use oversimplistic approximations. This paper resolves this challenge by proposing, for the first time, a control-oriented PEMFC stack model focusing on physically motivated water modeling, which covers phase change, liquid water removal, membrane water uptake, and water flooding effects on the electrochemical reaction. Parametrizing the resulting model with measurement data yielded the fitted model. The parameterized model delivers valuable insight into the water mechanisms, which were thoroughly analyzed. Keywords: condensation heat transfer, heat transfer correlation, multi-stream PFHE, plate–fin heat exchanger (PFHE), Wilson plot method
This study aims to provide an experimental investigation and comparison of the condensation heat transfer characteristics in a plate−fin heat exchanger (PFHE). The heat flux, mass flux, and saturation pressure were adjusted as experimental parameters to verify the effects on the condensation heat transfer. In addition, condensation heat transfer correlation of two-stream PFHEs was provided based on the experimental data for utilization as a design reference for the heat exchanger. The turbulence is the most influential in heat transfer. One of the ways to foster turbulence is to increase shear stress. The higher flow velocity results in the higher shear stress. That was why increasing mass flux or the flow with higher vapor quality showed the higher heat transfer coefficient (HTC). Refrigerant properties such as viscosity and specific volume of vapor changed according to the saturation pressure. It is expected they affect the degree of turbulence too in similar manners.
