Empirical Analysis of the Impact of COVID-19 Social Distancing on Residential Electricity Consumption Based on Demographic Characteristics and Load Shape
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: COVID-19, demand-side management, demographic characteristic, energy management, household energy consumption, load profile, social distancing, time-varying reproduction number
Since January 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has been impacting various aspects of people’s daily lives and the economy. The first case of COVID-19 in South Korea was identified on 20 January 2020. The Korean government implemented the first social distancing measures in the first week of March 2020. As a result, energy consumption in the industrial, commercial and educational sectors decreased. On the other hand, residential energy consumption increased as telecommuting work and remote online classes were encouraged. However, the impact of social distancing on residential energy consumption in Korea has not been systematically analyzed. This study attempts to analyze the impact of social distancing implemented as a result of COVID-19 on residential energy consumption with time-varying reproduction numbers of COVID-19. A two-way fixed effect model and demographic characteristics are used to account for the heterogeneity. The changes in household energy consumption by load shape group are... [more]

Application of Empirical Mode Decomposition and Extreme Learning Machine Algorithms on Prediction of the Surface Vibration Signal
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: extreme learning machine, improved empirical mode decomposition, surface vibration signal
Accurately predicting surface vibration signals of diesel engines is the key to evaluating the operation quality of diesel engines. Based on an improved empirical mode decomposition and extreme learning machine algorithm, the characteristics of diesel engine surface vibration signal were detected, predicted, and analyzed. First, the surface vibration signal was decomposed into a series of signal components by an improved empirical mode decomposition algorithm. Then, the extreme learning machine algorithm was applied to each signal component to obtain the predicted value of the corresponding signal component and determine the characteristics of the ground vibration signal. Compared with the empirical mode decomposition−extremum learning machine algorithm and the extremum learning machine algorithm, the results show that the improved empirical mode decomposition−extremum learning machine algorithm is feasible and effective.

Renewable Energy and CO2 Emissions: Empirical Evidence from Major Energy-Consuming Countries
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 emissions, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, two-step GMM
The goal of this study was to contribute to the ongoing debate on the relationship between renewable energy (RE) and CO2 emissions. In particular, we explored the link between RE and CO2 emissions in a sample of major renewable energy-consuming countries for the period 2000−2015. Therefore, the major contribution of this study was to answer the question of whether a substantial shift to renewable energy consumption will lead to lower CO2 emissions. Using the two-step generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator, our empirical results suggested that RE has a significant negative effect on CO2 emissions. For example, a one percentage point increase in RE leads to a 0.5% decrease in CO2 emissions.

MPPT Improvement for PMSG-Based Wind Turbines Using Extended Kalman Filter and Fuzzy Control System
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Extended Kalman Filter, fuzzy logic control, permanent magnet synchronous generator, wind turbines
Variable speed wind turbines are commonly used as wind power generation systems because of their lower maintenance cost and flexible speed control. The optimum output power for a wind turbine can be extracted using maximum power point tracking (MPPT) strategies. However, unpredictable parameters, such as wind speed and air density could affect the accuracy of the MPPT methods, especially during the wind speed small oscillations. In this paper, in a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), the MPPT is implemented by determining the uncertainty of the unpredictable parameters using the extended Kalman filter (EKF). Also, the generator speed is controlled by employing a fuzzy logic control (FLC) system. This study aims at minimizing the effects of unpredictable parameters on the MPPT of the PMSG system. The simulation results represent an improvement in MPPT accuracy and output power efficiency.

The Effect of Temperature-Pressure Conditions on the RDF Gasification in the Atmosphere of Steam and Carbon Dioxide
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 gasification, refuse-derived fuel, steam gasification, thermovolumetry
This research aimed to assess the process conditions, temperature and pressure, on the gasification of alternative refuse-derived fuel (RDF) in the atmosphere of steam and carbon dioxide on a laboratory scale using a fixed bed reactor. For this reason, the selected RDF were analysed, including proximate and ultimate analysis, mercury content and ash composition. After that, isothermal gasification measurements using the thermovolumetric method were performed under various temperatures (700, 750, 800, 900 °C) and pressures (0.5, 1, 1.5 MPa), using steam and carbon dioxide as gasifying agents. The obtained results showed that in the entire analysed range, the increase in temperature positively affect both the steam and CO2 gasification of RDF. The formation rates of main components (H2 and/or CO) of the resulting gas, as well as yields of gas components and maximum carbon conversion degrees increase. However, this positive effect was the greater, the lower the process pressure was. In tu... [more]

High Voltage Redox-Meditated Flow Batteries with Prussian Blue Solid Booster
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow battery, non-aqueous, Prussian blue, redox-mediated, solid booster
This work presents Prussian blue solid boosters for use in high voltage redox-mediated flow batteries (RMFB) based on non-aqueous electrolytes. The system consisted of sodium iodide as a redox mediator in an acetonitrile catholyte containing solid Prussian blue powder. The combination enabled the solid booster utilization in the proposed systems to reach as high as 66 mAh g−1 for hydrated Prussian blue and 110 mAh g−1 for anhydrous rhombohedral Prussian blue in cells with an average potential of about 3 V (vs. Na+/Na). Though the boosted system suffers from capacity fading, it opens up possibilities to develop non-aqueous RMFB with low-cost materials.

Solar-Powered Cellular Base Stations in Kuwait: A Case Study
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: base stations, cellular networks, diesel generator, HOMER, photovoltaic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
With the rapidly evolving mobile technologies, the number of cellular base stations (BSs) has significantly increased to meet the explosive demand for mobile services and applications. In turn, this has significantly increased the capital and operational expenses, due to the increased electricity prices and energy consumption. To generate electricity, power plants mainly rely on fossil fuels, which are non-renewable energy resources. As a result, CO2 emissions also increase, which adversely affect health and environment. For wireless access technologies and cellular networks, BSs are the largest power consumer, and the network energy consumption is mainly dominated by the network infrastructure, which makes the telecommunications sector liable for energy consumption as well as CO2 emissions around the globe. Alternatively, solar energy is considered as an eco-friendly and economically attractive solution, due to its cost-effectiveness and sustainability. In this paper, the potentials o... [more]

Assessment and Perspectives of Heat Transfer Fluids for CSP Applications
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CSP, heat transfer fluids, linear focusing concentrators, linear Fresnel collectors, mineral oil, molten salts, parabolic trough, synthetic oil, thermal oil
Different fluid compositions have been considered as heat transfer fluids (HTF) for concentrating solar power (CSP) applications. In linear focusing CSP systems synthetic oils are prevalently employed; more recently, the use of molten salt mixtures in linear focusing CSP systems has been proposed too. This paper presents a comparative assessment of thermal oils and five four nitrate/nitrite mixtures, among the ones mostly employed or proposed so far for CSP applications. The typical medium-size CSP plant (50 MWe) operating with synthetic oil as HTF and the “solar salt” as TES was considered as a benchmark. In the first part of the paper, physical properties and operation ranges of different HTFs are reviewed; corrosion and environmental issues are highlighted too. Besides an extensive review of HTFs based on data available from the open literature, the authors report their own obtained experimental data needed to thoroughly compare different solutions. In the second part of the paper,... [more]

Impact of Blow-By Gas and Endgap Ring Position on the Variations of Particle Emissions in Gasoline Engines
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: backflow, blow-by, decanter, endgap, engine, Gasoline, oil, particles, transient
Particulate emission from internal combustion engines is a complex phenomenon that needs to be understood in order to identify its main factors. To this end, it appears necessary to study the impact of unburned gases, called blow-by gases, which are reinjected into the engine intake system. A series of transient tests demonstrate their significant contribution since the particle emissions of spark-ignition engines are 1.5 times higher than those of an engine without blow-by with a standard deviation 1.5 times greater. After analysis, it is found that the decanter is not effective enough to remove completely the oil from the gases. Tests without blow-by gases also have the advantage of having a lower disparity, and therefore of being more repeatable. It appears that the position of the “endgap” formed by the first two rings has a significant impact on the amount of oil transported towards the combustion chamber by the backflow, and consequently on the variation of particle emissions. Magnetic Coupling-Based Battery Impedance Measurement Method
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery impedance, damped oscillation, discrete Fourier transform, magnetic coupling, state of charge
The battery impedance is an important indicator of battery health status. In this paper, a magnetic coupling-based impedance measurement method for electrochemical batteries is proposed. Without affecting the energy injection stage, the designed suppression resistance can minimize the influence of the primary circuit response, and the under-damped oscillation waveform containing the battery impedance information can be directly obtained on the primary inductance. The change of the mutual inductance value within a certain range will not affect the measurement results. Therefore, the measurement system has high stability and robustness. By utilizing the discrete Fourier transform (DFT)-based algorithm to calculate the damped oscillation parameters, the battery impedance is accurately derived from the calculated attenuation coefficient and damped oscillation frequency. The accuracy of this method under different coupling parameters is analyzed and verified by simulation and experiment on... [more]

Optimal Design of a Flyback Microinverter Operating under Discontinuous-Boundary Conduction Mode (DBCM)
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DC-AC converters, design methodology, Energy Efficiency, photovoltaic power systems, power electronics, renewable energy sources
The flyback converter has been widely used in Photovoltaic microinverters, operating either in Discontinuous, Boundary, or Continuous Conduction Mode (DCM, BCM, CCM). The recently proposed hybrid DBCM operation inherits the merits of both DCM and BCM. In this work, the necessary analytical equations describing the converter operation for any given condition under DBCM are derived, and are needed due to the hybrid nature of the modulation strategy during each sinusoidal wave. Based on this analysis, a design optimization sequence used to maximize the weighted efficiency of the inverter under DBCM is then applied. The design procedure is based on a power loss analysis for each converter component and focuses on the appropriate selection of the converter parameters. To achieve this, accurate, fully parameterized loss models of the converter components are implemented. The power loss analysis is then validated by applying the optimization methodology to build an experimental prototype oper... [more]

Free Convective Heat Transfer in a Closed Gap between Concentric Semi-Hemispheres
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: architecture, buildings, concentric semi-hemispheres, electronic packaging, natural convection, numerical approach
Free convective heat transfer in the closed gap between concentric semi-hemispheres is quantified by means of a numerical approach based on the volume control method using the SIMPLE algorithm. The average Nusselt number is determined for several configurations obtained by varying the cavity’s aspect ratio between 0.15 and 1.5, while the Rayleigh number varies within the 5.33 × 103−4.50 × 108 range. The results show that the correlations available in the literature dealing with concentric whole spheres cannot be used for the configuration treated here. The new correlation between the Nusselt and Rayleigh numbers proposed in this work can be applied in various engineering sectors, such as in the electronic packaging considered in this present work, buildings, and architecture.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ceramic filter, gasification
This paper presents a study on the application of a ceramic filter in the biomass gasification process and its efficiency in particulate matter removal from the process gas and flue gas. A significant advantage of this type of filter is its high efficiency in small particle removal (<1 µm). This feature allows us to reach the much lower emissions that are required by the applicable standards. The study was performed using an original biomass gasification installation, where conifer scobs were used as feedstock. The installation, its operation and measurement methodology are described in the article. The study included the analysis of process gas and particulate matter, as well as particulate matter content before and after the filter was applied. The measurements indicate that the efficiency of particulate matter removal reaches 99.1%. The analysis of particulate matter in the process gas allowed us to determine that its content was 18.26%, and additionally it was indicated that it... [more]

Full-Stress Anchoring Technology and Application of Bolts in the Coal Roadway
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bolt, coal roadway support, full-stress anchoring, load transfer, prestress
The traditional anchoring method of bolts has insufficient control over the surrounding rock of the coal roadway. Based on this background, full-stress anchoring technology of bolts was proposed. Firstly, a mechanical relationship model of a bolt-drawing, anchoring interface was established to obtain the equations of the axial force and obtain shear stress distribution as well as the decreasing-load transfer law of the anchoring section of bolts. Through studying the prestress-loading experimental device of bolts, we found that increasing the initial preload could increase the axial force under the same conditions and the retarded anchoring section could control the axial-force loss of bolts in the middle of the anchoring section. Under the full-stress anchoring mode, the effect of applying a pre-tightening force was better than that of applying a pre-tightening force under traditional anchoring methods. Keywords: ANFIS, ANN, fuzzy, MPPT, photovoltaic systems, power recovery
Classic and intelligent techniques aim to locate and track the maximum power point of photovoltaic (PV) systems, such as perturb and observe (P&O), fuzzy logic (FL), artificial neural networks (ANNs), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFISs). This paper proposes and compares three intelligent algorithms for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control, specifically fuzzy, ANN, and ANFIS. The modeling of a single-diode equivalent circuit-based 3 kWp PV plant was developed and validated to achieve this purpose. Then, the MPPT techniques were designed and applied to control the buck−boost converter’s switching device of the PV plant. All three methods use the ambient conditions as input variables: solar irradiance and ambient temperature. The proposed methodology comprises the study of the dynamic response for tracking the maximum power point and the power generated of the PV systems, and it was compared to the classic P&O technique under varying ambient conditions. Evolution of Temperature Field around Underground Power Cable for Static and Cyclic Heating
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: convection in porous media, cyclic thermal loading, thermal conductivity, underground power cable, vadose zone heat transfer
Power transmission covering long-distances has shifted from overhead high voltage cables to underground power cable systems due to numerous failures under severe weather conditions and electromagnetic pollution. The underground power cable systems are limited by the melting point of the insulator around the conductor, which depends on the surrounding soils’ heat transfer capacity or the thermal conductivity. In the past, numerical and theoretical studies have been conducted based on the mechanistic heat and mass transfer model. However, limited experimental evidence has been provided. Therefore, in this study, we performed a series of experiments for static and cyclic thermal loads with a cylindrical heater embedded in the sand. The results suggest thermal charging of the surrounding dry sand and natural convection within the wet sand. A comparison of heat transfer for dry, unsaturated and fully saturated sand is presented with graphs and colour maps which provide valuable information... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: nanofluids, photothermal conversion efficiency, solar energy
As low-cost, widely distributed and easily accessible renewable clean energy, solar energy has attracted more and more attention. Direct absorption solar collectors can convert solar energy into heat, but their efficiency is closely related to the absorption performance of the working fluid. In order to improve the absorption efficiency of direct absorption solar collectors, an experimental study on the selective absorption of solar energy by hybrid nanofluids was carried out. Five hybrid nanofluids were prepared and characterized, and the energy transfer advantages of hybrid nanofluid over single nanofluid were carefully studied. Experiments have found that the light-to-heat conversion properties of hybrid nanofluids show no obvious advantages or disadvantages compared with single nanofluid, and their performance is closely related to the types of nanoparticles. In addition, the hybrid nanofluid generally has two peaks, exactly the same as the single nanofluid in the mixed component,... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery energy storage system (BESS), brushless DC motor (BLDCM), energy management strategy (EMS), interconnection and damping assignment (IDA), passivity-based control (PBC), photovoltaic array, solar water pumping system (SWPS)
In remote locations, it is advisable to combine solar water pumping with electric energy storage and power supply for other forms of consumption. In such complex systems, individual subsystems feature their own local control, and the general automatic control of the system in different modes of its operation is carried out in accordance with an energy management strategy (EMS). In this paper, the functions of local and general control of the solar water pumping system with battery storage and external power supply are combined in the system of passivity-based control (PBC). The EMS is constructed in such a way that for all modes, only two PBC systems are developed, which are switched depending on the battery’s state of charge and the current levels of the two main disturbances—solar irradiation and electrical consumption. For each system, two control influence former (CIF) structures were synthesized and their operation was investigated by computer simulation. Despite the simplicity of... [more]
