Transient Natural Convection in a Thermally Insulated Annular Cylinder Exposed to a High Temperature from the Inner Radius
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer in annular cylinder, thermal storage system, unsteady natural convection
Extensive numerical analysis was performed for the unsteady state, natural convection in the annular cylinders. The cylinder’s boundaries were thermally insulated, except the inner surface. The fluid (water) in the cylinder initially was assumed at a cold temperature while the inner surface was subjected to a high temperature. The time history for the heat transfer by diffusion and advection was studied. The time needed for fully charging the storage tank and rate of heat transfer was calculated. The predicted results were compared with the pure heat diffusion process and with a steady-state convection system. Therefore, CFD simulations were performed for natural convection in the storage tank. The main objective of this study was to establish correlations for the rate of heat transfer as a function of time and other controlling parameters. The correlation is needed in designing a thermal energy storage system for domestic and industrial heating processes. One of the drawbacks of the c... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Eulerian–Eulerian model, heat transfer enhancement, microfluid, multiphase flow
The turbulent heat transfer enhancement of microfluid as a heat transfer medium in a tube was investigated. Within the Reynolds number ranging from 7000 to 23,000, heat transfer, friction loss and thermal performance characteristics of graphite, Al2O3 and CuO microfluid with the particle volume fraction of 0.25%−1.0% and particle size of 5 μm have been respectively tested. The results showed that the thermal performance of microfluids was better than water. In addition, the graphite microfluid had the best turbulent convective heat transfer effect among several microfluids. To further investigate the effect of graphite particle size on thermal performance, the heat transfer characteristics of the graphite microfluid with the size of 1 μm was also tested. The results showed that the thermal performance of the particle size of 1 μm was better than that of 5 μm. Within the investigated range, the maximum value of the thermal performance of graphite microfluid was found at a 1.0% volume fr... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Biochemical Methane Potential Correction Coefficient, biomass conversion, industrial-scale efficiency, laboratory-scale efficiency, loss prevention
This study is an elaboration on the conference article written by the same authors, which presented the results of laboratory tests on the biogas efficiency of the following substrates: maize silage (MS), pig manure (PM), potato waste (PW), and sugar beet pulp (SB). This article presents methane yields from the same substrates, but also on a technical scale. Apart from that, it presents an original methodology of defining the Biochemical Methane Potential Correction Coefficient (BMPCC) based on the calculation of biomass conversion on an industrial scale and on a laboratory scale. The BMPCC was introduced as a tool to enable uncomplicated verification of the operation of a biogas plant to increase its efficiency and prevent undesirable losses. The estimated BMPCC values showed that the volume of methane produced in the laboratory was overestimated in comparison to the amount of methane obtained under technical conditions. There were differences observed for each substrate. They ranged... [more]

Combustion and Emissions Characteristics of the Turbine Engine Fueled with HEFA Blends from Different Feedstocks
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Alternative Fuels, emissions, HEFA process, synthetic blending component, turbine engine
In the next decade, due to the desire for significant reduction in the carbon footprint left by the aviation sector and the development of a sustainable alternatives to petroleum, fuel from renewable sources will play an increasing role as a propellant for turbine aircraft engines. Currently, apart from five types of jet fuel containing synthesized hydrocarbons that are certified by the ASTM D7566 standard, there is yet another synthetic blending component that is at the stage of testing and certification. Hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids enable the production of a synthetic component for jet fuel from any form of native fat or oil. Used feedstock affects the final synthetic blending component composition and consequently the properties of the blend for jet fuel and, as a result, the operation of turbine engines. A specialized laboratory test rig with a miniature turbojet engine was used for research, which is an interesting alternative to complex and expensive tests with full sca... [more]

Improvements in CO2 Booster Architectures with Different Economizer Arrangements
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CO2 transcritical booster, commercial refrigeration, economizer, integrated mechanical subcooling, subcooling, variable frequency drive
CO2 transcritical booster architectures are widely analyzed to be applied in centralized commercial refrigeration plants in consonance with the irrevocable phase-out of HFCs. Most of these analyses show the limitations of CO2 cycles in terms of energy efficiency, especially in warm countries. From the literature, several improvements have been proposed to raise the booster efficiency in high ambient temperatures. The use of economizers is an interesting technique to reduce the temperature after the gas cooler and to improve the energy efficiency of transcritical CO2 cycles. The economizer cools down the high pressure’s line of CO2 by evaporating the same refrigerant extracted from another point of the facility. Depending on the extraction point, some configurations are possible. In this work, different booster architectures with economizers have been analyzed and compared. From the results, the combination of the economizer with the additional compressor allows obtaining energy savings... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air conditioning system, renewable energy system, TRNSYS, virtual energy storage
Considering the huge power consumption, rapid response and the short-term heat reserving capacity of the air conditioning load in the building’s energy system, the air conditioning load and its system can be equivalent to the virtual energy storage device for the power grid. Therefore, to obtain a high matching building renewable energy system, a virtual energy storage system of the air conditioning load, accompanied by a storage battery, was built in the paper. Then, operating strategies for the virtual energy storage of the air conditioning load and storage battery were designed. Further, to quantize the contribution of the virtual energy storage to the improvement of matching characteristics, two indicators of the demand side and supply side in the energy system were adopted, including on-site energy fraction (OEFr) and on-site energy matching (OEMr). Lastly, matching characteristic research of the building’s renewable energy system based on virtual energy storage of the air conditi... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: experimental geothermal device, ground source heat pump systems, KD2 Pro device, single-U heat exchanger, thermal conductivity
Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems are becoming popular in space heating and cooling applications. Despite this fact, in most countries, the role of this energy is not as important as it should be nowadays according to its capabilities for energy generation without CO2 emissions, mainly due to the lack of technical knowledge about GSHP performance. The analysis of the physical processes that take part in the geothermal exchanges is necessary to allow the optimal exploitation of the geothermal resources. For all the above, an experimental geothermal device was built in the laboratory to control the phenomena that take place in a borehole heat exchanger (BHE). A 1-m high single-U heat exchanger was inserted in the center of a polyethylene container which also included granular material (surrounding ground) and the grouting material. Temperature sensors were situated in different positions of the experimental setup. Physical processes are evaluated to finally validate the model. Numer... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: body crack propagation, cement sheath, fluid-structure coupling, hydraulic fracturing, numerical simulation
Microcracks caused by perforating operations in a cement sheath body and interface have the potential to further expand or even cause crossflow during hydraulic fracturing. Currently, there are few quantitative studies on the propagation of initial cement-body microcracks. In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element model for the propagation of initial microcracks of the cement sheath body along the axial and circumferential directions during hydraulic fracturing was proposed based on the combination of coupling method of fluid−solid in porous media and the Cohesive Zone Method. The influence of reservoir geological conditions, the mechanical properties of a casing-cement sheath-formation system, and fracturing constructions in the propagation of initial axial microcracks of a cement sheath body was quantitatively analyzed. It can be concluded that the axial extension length of microcracks increased with the increase of elastic modulus of the cement sheath and formation, the flow... [more]

Power System Nonlinear Modal Analysis Using Computationally Reduced Normal Form Method
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: modal interaction, nonlinear modal analysis, power system analysis, reduced normal form
Increasing nonlinearity in today’s grid challenges the conventional small-signal (modal) analysis (SSA) tools. For instance, the interactions among modes, which are not captured by SSA, may play significant roles in a stressed power system. Consequently, alternative nonlinear modal analysis tools, notably Normal Form (NF) and Modal Series (MS) methods are being explored. However, they are computation-intensive due to numerous polynomial coefficients required. This paper proposes a fast NF technique for power system modal interaction investigation, which uses characteristics of system modes to carefully select relevant terms to be considered in the analysis. The Coefficients related to these terms are selectively computed and the resulting approximate model is computationally reduced compared to the one in which all the coefficients are computed. This leads to a very rapid nonlinear modal analysis of the power systems. The reduced model is used to study interactions of modes in a two-ar... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrodialytic energy storage system (EESS), life-cycle analysis (LCA), permselectivity, reverse electrodialysis (RED)
Reverse electrodialysis and electrodialysis can be combined into a closed energy storage system, allowing for storing surplus energy through a salinity difference between two solutions. A closed system benefits from simple temperature control, the ability to use higher salt concentrations and mitigation of membrane fouling. In this work, the permselectivity of two membranes from Fumatech, FAS-50 and FKS-50, is found to be ranging from 0.7 to 0.5 and from 0.8 to 0.7 respectively. The maximum unit cell open-circuit voltage was measured to be 115 ± 9 mV and 118 ± 8 mV at 25 ° C and 40 ° C, respectively, and the power density was found to be 1.5 ± 0.2 W m uc − 2 at 25 ° C and 2.0 ± 0.3 W m uc − 2 at 40 ° C. Given a lifetime of 10 years, three hours of operation per day and 3% downtime, the membrane price can be 2.5 ± 0.3 $ m − 2 and 1.4 ± 0.2 $ m − 2 to match the energy price in the EU and the USA, resp... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air conditioning, buildings, Energy Efficiency, green roofs, mediterranean area
Rooftop gardens ona building have proved to be a good way to improve its storm water management, but many other benefits can be obtained from the installation of these systems, such as reduction of energy consumption, decrease of the heat stress, abatement on CO2 emissions, etc. In this paper, the effect from the presence of these rooftop gardens on abuilding’s energy consumption has been investigated by experimental campaigns using a green roof ona public building in a Mediterranean location in Spain. The obtained results demonstrate a substantial improvement by the installation of the green roof onthe building’s cooling energy demand for a standard summer day, in the order of 30%, and a reduction, about 15%, in the heating energy demand for a winter day. Thus, given the longer duration of the summer conditions along the year, a noticeable reduction on energy demand could be obtained. Wave-Turbulence Decomposition Methods Applied to Tidal Energy Site Assessment
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: integral length scales, site assessment, tidal energy, turbulence, wave-current interaction, wave-turbulence decomposition
High levels of turbulence have been proven to substantially increase the blade loadings on tidal turbines, outlining the need of properly characterizing turbulence parameters in tidal energy sites. The presence of long surface gravity waves may cause a significant bias on the estimation of these parameters, which requires wave-turbulence decomposition methods that are currently missing from guidelines. Here, three techniques of decomposing wave and turbulence are tested: the stopband filter (SB), moving average filter (MA), and synchrosqueezing wavelet transform (SWT). The study site, Banks Strait, Tasmania, is a 16 km wide channel that presents high potential for tidal energy generation. Wave peak periods at the study site were found to vary mostly between 7 and 12 s, with maximum exceeding 15 s. Turbulence intensities (TI), turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), and integral scales are quantified. Our results indicate differences between the estimates obtained from each method. The MA highl... Improved Hydrogen-Production-Based Power Management Control of a Wind Turbine Conversion System Coupled with Multistack Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolyzers
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: control, current ripple, power electronics, proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, stacked interleaved DC–DC converter, wind turbine conversion system
This paper deals with two main issues regarding the specific energy consumption in an electrolyzer (i.e., the Faraday efficiency and the converter topology). The first aspect is addressed using a multistack configuration of proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers supplied by a wind turbine conversion system (WTCS). This approach is based on the modeling of the wind turbine and the electrolyzers. The WTCS and the electrolyzers are interfaced through a stacked interleaved DC−DC buck converter (SIBC), due to its benefits for this application in terms of the output current ripple and reliability. This converter is controlled so that it can offer dynamic behavior that is faster than the wind turbine, avoiding overvoltage during transients, which could damage the PEM electrolyzers. The SIBC is designed to be connected in array configuration (i.e., parallel architecture), so that each converter operates at its maximum efficiency. To assess the performance of the power management strategy... [more]

Study on Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells with Nonhumidification Using Metal Foam in Dead-Ended Operation
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dead-ended operation, metal foam, polymer electrolyte fuel cell, portable power source, water management
Portable power sources have attracted increasing interest and attention, with a focus on the reduction of the system volume. Thus, portable power sources often use polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) systems with dead-ended operation—which are simpler and more fuel-efficient than conventional PEFC systems. In these systems, the fuel may be supplied under nonhumidified conditions to minimize the balance of plant (BOP). In recent studies, metal foams have been used as flow fields to improve fuel diffusion and water management in the PEFC; the performance can be compared to that of a conventional channel. This study compared the performance and water management ability of channel and metal foam flow fields under nonhumidified conditions with dead-ended operation. The results demonstrate that the average output was similar for both flow fields. In terms of fuel efficiency, the PEFC with the metal foam could be operated for a significantly longer time without purging than that with the cha... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery/ultracapacitor, bidirectional power converter, dual-energy, electric vehicles
A patented bidirectional power converter was studied as an interface to connect the DC-bus of driving inverter, battery energy storage (BES), and ultracapacitor (UC) to solve the problem that the driving motor damages the battery life during acceleration and deceleration in electric vehicles (EVs). The proposed concept was to adopt a multiport switch to control the power flow and achieve the different operating mode transitions for the better utilization of energy. In addition, in order to improve the conversion efficiency, the proposed converter used a coupled inductor and interleaved-pulse-width-modulation (IPWM) control to achieve a high voltage conversion ratio (i.e., bidirectional high step-up/down conversion characteristics). This study discussed the steady-state operation and characteristic analysis of the proposed converter. Finally, a 500 W power converter prototype with specifications of 72 V DC-bus, 24 V BES, and 48 V UC was built, and the feasibility was verified by simulat... [more]

Flow Allocation in Meshed AC-DC Electricity Grids
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: European electricity grid, flow allocation, power system analysis, transmission cost allocation
In power systems, flow allocation (FA) methods enable to allocate the usage and costs of the transmission grid to each single market participant. Based on predefined assumptions, the power flow is split into isolated generator-specific or producer-specific sub-flows. Two prominent FA methods, Marginal Participation (MP) and Equivalent Bilateral Exchanges (EBEs), build upon the linearized power flow and thus on the Power Transfer Distribution Factors (PTDFs). Despite their intuitive and computationally efficient concepts, they are restricted to networks with passive transmission elements only. As soon as a significant number of controllable transmission elements, such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) lines, operate in the system, they lose their applicability. This work reformulates the two methods in terms of Virtual Injection Patterns (VIPs), which allows one to efficiently introduce a shift parameter q to tune contributions of net sources and net sinks in the network. Experiments on Heat Transfer of Supercritical Pressure Kerosene in Mini Tube under Ultra-High Heat Fluxes
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat transfer, regenerative cooling, supercritical fluids, supercritical kerosene
Heat transfer of supercritical-pressure kerosene is crucial for regenerative cooling systems in rocket engines. In this study, experiments were devoted to measure the heat transfer of supercritical-pressure kerosene under ultra-high heat fluxes. The kerosene flowed horizontally in a mini circular tube with a 1.0 mm inner diameter and was heated uniformly under pressures of 10−25 MPa, mass fluxes of 8600−51,600 kg/m2 s, and a maximum heat flux of up to 33.6 MW/m2. The effects of the operating parameters on the heat transfer of supercritical-pressure kerosene were discussed. It was observed that the heat transfer coefficient of kerosene increases at a higher mass flux and inlet bulk temperature, but is little affected by pressure. The heat transfer of supercritical-pressure kerosene is classified into two regions: normal heat transfer and enhanced heat transfer. When the wall temperature exceeds a certain value, heat transfer is enhanced, which could be attributed to pseudo boiling. This... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: IGBT module, lifetime, power device, PV inverter, reliability, three-level inverter
The cost of the PV energy reduction is still required to increase the penetration level of PV systems in the energy market. The reliability of PV inverters is one of the important aspects to be enhanced in order to reduce the cost of PV energy, since it is closely related to the maintenance cost and the annual energy production. In this paper, the lifetime of NPC and T-type inverters, which are three-level inverter topologies that are widely used for PV systems, are comparatively evaluated with a 30 kW grid-connected PV system. It is performed by focusing on power devices since the power electronic components of both converters are the same except for the power devices. Therefore, this result can represent the comparison of the reliability performance of the NPC and T-type inverters. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: commutation failure, high-voltage direct current (HVDC), impulse response, power oscillation, tie-line
With the rapid development of ultra-high-voltage (UHV) AC/DC, especially the step-by-step upgrading of the UHV DC transmission scale, security presents new challenges. Commutation failure (CF) is a common fault in line commutated converter (LCC) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power systems. Once failure happens, it may cause power oscillations in a system. In this paper, taking a two-area AC/DC parallel interconnected power system as the example, based on the impulse response model of second-order linear system, the mechanism of power oscillation on the AC tie-line caused by CF are clarified. It is proved that the peak value of the AC tie-line power oscillation is mainly determined by the DC power and the equivalent CF duration, the frequency and damping ratio of dominant area oscillation mode. Meanwhile, the peak time is mainly determined by the oscillation frequency. Finally, the correctness and effectiveness of the algorithms are verified by a simulation analysis of an extended... [more]
