A Switched Quasi-Z-Source Inverter with Continuous Input Currents
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: continuous input current, DC–AC inverter, impedance source inverter, quasi Z-source inverter, switched boost inverter, Z-source inverter
Impedance source converters as single-stage power conversion alternatives can boost and regulate the output voltages of renewable energy sources. Nevertheless, they, also known as Z-source inverters (ZSIs), still suffer from limited voltage gains and higher stresses across the components. To tackle such issues, extra diodes, passive components, and active switches can be utilized in the basic ZSIs. In this paper, a modified switched-quasi-Z-source inverter (S-qZSI) is proposed, which features continuous input currents and high boosting capability to boost output voltage by minor modifications of a prior-art topology. Furthermore, the voltage stress of the active switches is reduced, which contributes to a lower cost. The operation principles are discussed comprehensively. The performance of the proposed ZSI in terms of conversion ratio, voltage gain, and stresses on the power switches and capacitors is benchmarked with selected ZSIs. Finally, simulations and experimental tests substant... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bifacial, laser doped selective emitter, p-type, passivated emitter and rear (PERC) solar cells
In this paper, we report one bifacial p-type PERC solar cell with efficiency over 22% using laser doped selective emitter produced in larger-scale commercial line on 6-inch mono-crystalline wafer. On front side of the solar cell, square resistance of p-n junction was found to be closely related with laser power at certain laser scan speed and frequency. On the other side, the rear fingers with different ratios of height and width and rear silicon nitride (SiNx) layer with different thickness were optimized, and a highest rear efficiency of the bifacial solar cell was obtained. Finally, bifacial silicon solar cells with the front and rear efficiencies exceeding 22% and 15% (AM1.5, 1000 W/m2, 25 °C) were successfully achieved, respectively.

A Self-Learning Detection Method of Sybil Attack Based on LSTM for Electric Vehicles
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: EV, intrusion detection, self-learning, Sybil attack
Electric vehicles (EVs) are the development direction of new energy vehicles in the future. As an important part of the Internet of things (IOT) communication network, the charging pile is also facing severe challenges in information security. At present, most detection methods need a lot of prophetic data and too much human intervention, so they cannot do anything about unknown attacks. In this paper, a self-learning-based attack detection method is proposed, which makes training and prediction a closed-loop system according to a large number of false information packets broadcast to the communication network. Using long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network training to obtain the characteristics of traffic data changes in the time dimension, the unknown malicious behavior characteristics are self-extracted and self-learning, improving the detection efficiency and quality. In this paper, we take the Sybil attack in the car network as an example. The simulation results show that the... [more]

A Comprehensive Wind Power Forecasting System Integrating Artificial Intelligence and Numerical Weather Prediction
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: grid integration, Machine Learning, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, turbine icing, wind energy, wind power forecasting
The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) recently updated the comprehensive wind power forecasting system in collaboration with Xcel Energy addressing users’ needs and requirements by enhancing and expanding integration between numerical weather prediction and machine-learning methods. While the original system was designed with the primary focus on day-ahead power prediction in support of power trading, the enhanced system provides short-term forecasting for unit commitment and economic dispatch, uncertainty quantification in wind speed prediction with probabilistic forecasting, and prediction of extreme events such as icing. Furthermore, the empirical power conversion machine-learning algorithms now use a quantile approach to data quality control that has improved the accuracy of the methods. Forecast uncertainty is quantified using an analog ensemble approach. Two methods of providing short-range ramp forecasts are blended: the variational doppler radar analysis system an... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: broiler house, building energy management, conditions in the broiler living zone, floor temperature, heat exchange with soil
This paper deals with the problem of rational energy management in an intermittently heated broiler house. The aim was to evaluate the energy amount necessary to heat up the building floor for the production cycle, preceded by a technological interruption of varying length. The scope of studies included the indoor and outdoor air temperature measurements and the soil temperature measurements under the building floor. The results of field tests allowed computer simulations to be carried out in the WUFIplussoftware (Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics, Holzkirchen Branch, Germany). The variant analysis was preceded by the validation of the calculation model whose results showed a strong correlation of theoretical data with actual results. The winter breeding cycle was analyzed in detail. The detailed soil and air temperature curves are presented graphically. The results allow a conclusion that the length of the technological interruption has a significant impact on the amount of en... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fully developed flow, Galerkin-based integral (GBI) method, Petroleum, Poiseuille number, pressure gradient
Fluid flow in pipes plays an important role in different areas of academia and industry. Due to the importance of this kind of flow, several studies have involved circular cylindrical pipes. This paper aims to study fully developed internal laminar flow through a corrugated cylindrical duct, using the Galerkin-based integral method. As an application, we present a study using heavy oil with a relative density of 0.9648 (14.6 °API) and temperature-dependent viscosities ranging from 1715 to 13000 cP. Results for different fluid dynamics parameters, such as the Fanning friction factor, Reynolds number, shear stress, and pressure gradient, are presented and analyzed based on the corrugation number established for each section and aspect ratio of the pipe.

Effect of Cell Size on the Performance and Temperature Distribution of Molten Carbonate Fuel Cells
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Fluid Dynamics, molten carbonate fuel cell, size effect, stack
Molten carbonate fuel cells (MCFCs) are high-operating-temperature fuel cells with high efficiency and fuel diversity. Electrochemical reactions in MCFCs are exothermic. As the size of the fuel cells increases, the amount of the heat from the fuel cells and the temperature of the fuel cells increase. In this work, we investigated the relationship between the fuel cell stack size and performance by applying computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Three flow types, namely co-flow, cross-flow, and counter-flow, were studied. We found that when the size of the fuel cells increased beyond a certain value, the size of the fuel cell no longer affected the cell performance. The maximum fuel cell temperature converged as the size of the fuel cell increased. The temperature and current density distribution with respect to the size showed a very similar distribution. The converged maximum temperature of the fuel cells depended on the gas flow condition. The maximum temperature of the fuel cell decrea... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: multidimensional systems, nonlinear plants, particle filter, power system grid, sequential importance resampling, state estimation
In this paper, a new object in the form of a theoretical network is presented, which is useful as a benchmark for particle filtering algorithms designed for multivariable nonlinear systems (potentially linear, nonlinear, and even semi-Markovian jump system). The main goal of the paper is to propose an object that potentially can have similar to the power system grid properties, but with the number of state variables reduced twice (only one state variable for each node, while there are two in the case of power systems). Transition and measurement functions are proposed in the paper, and two types of transition functions are considered: dependent on one or many state variables. In addition, 10 types of measurements are proposed both for branch and nodal cases. The experiments are performed for 14 different, four-dimensional systems. Plants are both linear and highly nonlinear. The results include information about the state estimation quality (based on the mean squared error indicator) a... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery systems, equivalent circuit model, power quality
The supply of pulsed power loads is considered a key driver for the integration of energy storage systems (ESSs) with warship power systems. ESSs are identified as a means to offer fast response dynamics capable of driving pulsed loads for sustained periods. This paper contributes a novel investigation into the performance of a Nickel Manganese Cobalt based lithium-ion battery system to supply laser directed energy weapon (LDEW) loads for future warship combat power systems using time-domain simulation methodology. The approach describes a second order Thévenin equivalent circuit battery model validated against a battery module of a type used in commercial marine ESS. The ability of the battery system to power LDEW loads peaking at 2 MW for up to periods of four minutes were simulated for beginning of life (BoL) and degraded conditions. Effective Permeability of Multi Air Gap Ferrite Core 3-Phase Medium Frequency Transformer in Isolated DC-DC Converters
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: average air gap length, dc-dc power converters, gapped magnetic core, magnetic permeability, magnetizing inductance, medium frequency transformer
The magnetizing inductance of the medium frequency transformer (MFT) impacts the performance of the isolated dc-dc power converters. The ferrite material is considered for high power transformers but it requires an assembly of type “I” cores resulting in a multi air gap structure of the magnetic core. The authors claim that the multiple air gaps are randomly distributed and that the average air gap length is unpredictable at the industrial design stage. As a consequence, the required effective magnetic permeability and the magnetizing inductance are difficult to achieve within reasonable error margins. This article presents the measurements of the equivalent B(H) and the equivalent magnetic permeability of two three-phase MFT prototypes. The measured equivalent B(H) is used in an FEM simulation and compared against a no load test of a 100 kW isolated dc-dc converter showing a good fit within a 10% error. Further analysis leads to the demonstration that the equivalent magnetic permeabil... [more]

Prediction of Performance Variation Caused by Manufacturing Tolerances and Defects in Gas Diffusion Electrodes of Phosphoric Acid (PA)−Doped Polybenzimidazole (PBI)-Based High-Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFC), mathematical model, phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI)-based proton exchange membranes, prediction of performance variation caused by manufacturing tolerances and defects, six-sigma product specification
The automated process of coating catalyst layers on gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells results inherently into a number of defects. These defects consist of agglomerates in which the platinum sites cannot be accessed by phosphoric acid and which are the consequence of an inconsistent coating, uncoated regions, scratches, knots, blemishes, folds, or attached fine particles—all ranging from μm to mm size. These electrochemically inactive spots cause a reduction of the effective catalyst area per unit volume (cm2/cm3) and determine a drop in fuel cell performance. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is presented that predicts performance variation caused by manufacturing tolerances and defects of the GDE and which enables the creation of a six-sigma product specification for Advent phosphoric acid (PA)-doped polybenzimidazole (PBI)-based membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). The model was used to predict the total volume of defe... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: defect diagnosis, delamination, fuzzy classifier, infrared thermography, photovoltaic panels, discoloring
Infrared Thermography has been used as a tool for predictive and preventive maintenance of Photovoltaic panels. International Electrotechnical Commission provides some guidelines for using thermography to detect defects in Photovoltaic panels. However, the proposed guidelines focus only on the location of the hot spot than diagnosing the types of faults. The long-term reliability and efficiency of panels can be affected by progressive defects such as discolouring and delamination. This paper proposed the new Thermal Pixel Counting algorithm to detect the above faults based on three thermal profile index values. The real-time experimental testing was carried out using FLIR T420bx® thermal imager and results have been provided to validate the proposed method. In this work, the fuzzy rule-based classification system is proposed to automate the classification process. Research on a Safety Assessment Method for Leakage in a Heavy Oil Gathering Pipeline
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: absence of failure data, heavy oil gathering pipelines, information diffusion theory, safety evaluation, variable fuzzy set theory
At present, the number of oil and gas gathering and transportation pipelines is numerous, and leakage accidents occur frequently. Each year, due to pipeline failure, there are immeasurable consequences for people and the environment around the affected pipelines. In order to reduce the risk of leakage accidents in heavy oil gathering pipelines and prevent the occurrence of major spills, it is of great significance to carry out safety assessments of them. However, failure data of these pipelines is seriously deficient and statistical methods used to evaluate pipeline safety are incompatible. Therefore, this paper proposes a risk assessment system for heavy oil gathering pipelines in the absence of failure data. Firstly, a Bayesian network (BN) for the leak safety evaluation of heavy oil gathering pipelines is established via mapping from a bow-tie (BT) model. Then, information diffusion theory is combined with fuzzy set theory to obtain the failure probability of each factor affecting t... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: borehole thermal storage, capacity resistance model, ground source heat pump system, infinite cylindrical source, vertical spiral ground heat exchanger
Considering the heat capacity inside vertical spiral ground heat exchanger (VSGHEX) in the simulation is one of the most noteworthy challenge to design the ground source heat pump (GSHP) system with VSGHEXs. In this paper, a new simulation model for VSGHEXs is developed by combining the ICS model with the CaRM. The developed simulation model can consider the heat capacity inside VSGHEX and provide dynamic calculation with high speed and appropriate precision. In order to apply the CaRM, the equivalent length was introduced. Then, the equivalent length was approximated by comparing the results of the CaRM and the numerical calculation. In addition, the calculation model of the VSGHEX was integrated into the design and simulation tool for the GSHP system. The accuracy of the tool was verified by comparing with the measurements. The error between supply temperatures of the measurements and calculation is approximately 2 °C at the maximum. Finally, assuming GSHP systems with VSGHEXs, whose... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: methanation, methane, SNG, UCG, underground coal gasification
An experimental campaign on the methane-oriented underground coal gasification (UCG) process was carried out in a large-scale laboratory installation. Two different types of coal were used for the oxygen/steam blown experiments, i.e., “Six Feet” semi-anthracite (Wales) and “Wesoła” hard coal (Poland). Four multi-day gasification tests (96 h continuous processes) were conducted in artificially created coal seams under two distinct pressure regimes-20 and 40 bar. The experiments demonstrated that the methane yields are significantly dependent on both the properties of coal (coal rank) and the pressure regime. The average CH4 concentration for “Six Feet” semi-anthracite was 15.8%vol. at 20 bar and 19.1%vol. at 40 bar. During the gasification of “Wesoła” coal, the methane concentrations were 10.9%vol. and 14.8%vol. at 20 and 40 bar, respectively. The “Six Feet” coal gasification was characterized by much higher energy efficiency than gasification of the “Wesoła” coal and for both tested co... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficiency, ORC, thermodynamic cycles
Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power plants have become very popular and have found their applications in systems with renewable sources of energy. So far their overall efficiencies are not very impressive and only for the upper temperature of about 300 °C do they exceed 20%. A drawback of these cycles is the limitation of the cycle upper temperature due to the heat exchanger technology and the materials used. However, it is possible to overcome these difficulties by certain modifications of the thermodynamic cycles, a proper choice of the working medium and the optimization of cycle parameters. In the paper the problems of choosing the working medium and the question of higher temperature at the turbine inlet have been discussed. Different modifications of the schemas of the thermodynamic cycles have also been taken into account. The variants of power plants with regenerators, reheaters and heat exchangers have been considered. The proposed increase in temperature (in some cases up to 60... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flow maldistribution, heat exchanger, inlet header, pressure drop, splitter plate
The pressure drop increases along with the decrease in the flow maldistribution in the two-stage distributing inlet headers of a plate-fin heat exchanger. To solve this issue, we proposed a new inlet header configuration with splitter plates to decrease the flow maldistribution and pressure drop simultaneously. We used computational fluid dynamic technology to analyze the flow properties in the inlet header configuration and calculated the flow maldistribution degree of the outlet channels and the pressure drop in the inlet header. We performed a sensitivity analysis between the structural parameters, the flow maldistribution degree, and the pressure drop. We determined the optimum values of the structural parameters (the construction of transition duct, the number of splitter plates, the inclined angle of outermost plates, the height of splitter plates, the height of inlet header, etc.), and acquired the optimum configuration of the improved inlet header. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cogeneration, district heating, internal combustion engine, organic Rankine cycle, waste heat recovery
Improvement of energy conversion efficiency in prime movers has become of fundamental importance in order to respect EU 2020 targets. In this context, hybrid power plants comprising combined heat and power (CHP) prime movers integrated with the organic Rankine cycle (ORC) create interesting opportunities to additionally increase the first law efficiency and flexibility of the system. The possibility of adding supplementary electric energy production to a CHP system, by converting the prime movers’ exhaust heat with an ORC, was investigated. The inclusion of the ORC allowed operating the prime movers at full-load (thus at their maximum efficiency), regardless of the heat demand, without dissipating not required high enthalpy-heat. Indeed, discharged heat was recovered by the ORC to produce additional electric power at high efficiency. Application of Rough Set Theory (RST) to Forecast Energy Consumption in Buildings Undergoing Thermal Modernization
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: building energy consumption, building load forecasting, Energy Efficiency, rough set theory, thermal improved of buildings
In many regions, the heat used for space heating is a basic item in the energy balance of a building and significantly affects its operating costs. The accuracy of the assessment of heat consumption in an existing building and the determination of the main components of heat loss depends to a large extent on whether the energy efficiency improvement targets set in the thermal upgrading project are achieved. A frequent problem in the case of energy calculations is the lack of complete architectural and construction documentation of the analyzed objects. Therefore, there is a need to search for methods that will be suitable for a quick technical analysis of measures taken to improve energy efficiency in existing buildings. These methods should have satisfactory results in predicting energy consumption where the input is limited, inaccurate, or uncertain. Keywords: fatigue load, Surrogate Model, wind farm, wind turbine
Wind farm load assessment is typically conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) or aeroelastic simulations, which need a lot of computer power. A number of applications, for example wind farm layout optimisation, turbine lifetime estimation and wind farm control, requires a simplified but sufficiently detailed model for computing the turbine fatigue load. In addition, the effect of turbine curtailment is particularly important in the calculation of the turbine loads. Therefore, this paper develops a fast and computationally efficient method for wind turbine load assessment in a wind farm, including the wake effects. In particular, the turbine fatigue loads are computed using a surrogate model that is based on the turbine operating condition, for example, power set-point and turbine location, and the ambient wind inflow information. Keywords: analytics method, five-parameter model, photovoltaic panels, single-diode model
In this paper, the seven traditional models of photovoltaic (PV) modules are reviewed comprehensively to find out the appropriate model for reliability. All the models are validated using the Matlab code and graphical comparisons between models are made. The accuracy and convergence of each model is evaluated using the data of manufactured PV panels. Then, a novel model is proposed showing its consistent performance. The three most key parameters of the single-diode model are self-revised to adapt to various types of PV modules. This new method is verified in three types of PV panels’ data measured by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), USA. The validated data show promising results when the error RMSEs’ range of the proposed model is under 0.36.
