Ammonia as Effective Hydrogen Storage: A Review on Production, Storage and Utilization
Muhammad Aziz, Agung Tri Wijayanta, Asep Bayu Dani Nandiyanto
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ammonia, CO2 free, Hydrogen, production, storage, utilization
Ammonia is considered to be a potential medium for hydrogen storage, facilitating CO2-free energy systems in the future. Its high volumetric hydrogen density, low storage pressure and stability for long-term storage are among the beneficial characteristics of ammonia for hydrogen storage. Furthermore, ammonia is also considered safe due to its high auto ignition temperature, low condensation pressure and lower gas density than air. Ammonia can be produced from many different types of primary energy sources, including renewables, fossil fuels and surplus energy (especially surplus electricity from the grid). In the utilization site, the energy from ammonia can be harvested directly as fuel or initially decomposed to hydrogen for many options of hydrogen utilization. This review describes several potential technologies, in current conditions and in the future, for ammonia production, storage and utilization. Ammonia production includes the currently adopted Haber−Bosch, electrochemical a... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bonding coordination complex, boron tribromide (BBr3), boron-diffused layer, n-type c-Si solar cell
In this paper, the relationship between coordination complexes and electrical properties according to the bonding structure of boron and silicon was analyzed to optimize the p−n junction quality for high-efficiency n-type crystalline solar cells. The p+ emitter layer was formed using boron tribromide (BBr3). The etch-back process was carried out with HF-HNO3-CH3COOH solution to vary the sheet resistance (Rsheet). The correlation between boron−silicon bonding in coordination complexes and electrical properties according to the Rsheet was analyzed. Changes in the boron coordination complex and boron−oxygen (B−O) bonding in the p+ diffused layer were measured through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The correlation between electrical properties, such as minority carrier lifetime (τeff), implied open-circuit voltage (iVoc) and saturation current density (J0), according to the change in element bonding, was analyzed. For the interstitial defect, the boron ratio was over 1.8 and the i... [more]
Increasing Efficiency in an Aeronautical Engine through Maintenance Evaluation and Upgrades: Analysis of the Reliability and Performance Improvements under Financial Issues
Lorenzo Fedele, Luca Di Vito, Fulvio Enzo Ramundo
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aircraft maintenance, CFM56, condition monitoring, cost of maintenance, engine upgrades, exhaust gas temperature (EGT) margin
This paper defines a methodology for the evaluation of the technical and economic performance of aeronautical engines through the upgrades introduced during its life. The CFM56 is a high-bypass turbofan engine. The variants share a common design, but the details are different. The fan and booster evolved over the different iterations of the engine, as did the compressor, combustor, and turbine sections. Maintenance consists of the activities carried out during the life cycle of an engine to ensure safe, reliable, and economic operation. Maintenance costs represent 20−25% of an airline’s operating costs, of which 35−40% refer to the engine. The changes in the performance parameters indicate the state of the engine in the medium to long term: for example, it is possible to detect blade fouling or data on vibrations, and highlight changes in the characteristic behavior of an engine. This work investigates the behavior of the performance parameters in the period prior to an engine developm... [more]

Current State and Future Prospective of Repowering Wind Turbines: An Economic Analysis
Clemens Fuchs, Joachim Kasten, Maxi Vent
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: net present value, repowering, risk analysis, wind energy
For over two decades, the construction of wind turbines in Germany has been supported by guaranteed feed-in tariffs determined by the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), the primary goal of which is climate protection, in addition to reducing the country’s dependence on the import of (finitely available) fossil fuels. After China and the United States, Germany ranks third worldwide in the production of wind energy. The number of onshore wind turbines in Germany has risen to approximately 30,000 plants, of which approximately 10,000 wind turbines will fall out of the guaranteed EEG funding window in the next one to two years. There are basically two alternatives for these wind turbines: either continuing operations, with the sale of electricity at relatively low and fluctuating electricity stock prices, or repowering, which opens access to the fixed feed-in tariffs for another 20 years. However, repowering has the disadvantages that an approval process must be carried out and the invest... [more]
On the Potential of Silicon Intermediate Band Solar Cells
Esther López, Antonio Martí, Elisa Antolín, Antonio Luque
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Auger recombination, intermediate band solar cells, limit efficiency, non-overlapped coefficients, silicon
Intermediate band solar cells (IBSCs) have an efficiency limit of 63.2%, which is significantly higher than the 40.7% limit for conventional single gap solar cells. In order to achieve the maximum efficiency, the total bandgap of the cell should be in the range of ~2 eV. However, that fact does not prevent other cells based on different semiconductor bandgaps from benefiting from the presence of an intermediate band (IB) within their bandgap. Since silicon (1.12 eV bandgap) is the dominant material in solar cell technology, it is of interest to determine the limit efficiency of a silicon IBSC, because even a modest gain in efficiency could trigger a large commercial interest if the IB is implemented at low cost. In this work we study the limit efficiency of silicon-based IBSCs considering operating conditions that include the use of non-ideal photon casting between the optical transitions, different light intensities and Auger recombination. The results lead to the conclusion that a si... [more]
Underwater Noise Emission Due to Offshore Pile Installation: A Review
Apostolos Tsouvalas
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air bubble curtain, noise levels, noise mitigation, offshore wind, peak pressure Level, pile installation, sound exposure level, underwater noise, vibroacoustics
The growing demand for renewable energy supply stimulates a drastic increase in the deployment rate of offshore wind energy. Offshore wind power generators are usually supported by large foundation piles that are driven into the seabed with hydraulic impact hammers or vibratory devices. The pile installation process, which is key to the construction of every new wind farm, is hindered by a serious by-product: the underwater noise pollution. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art computational methods to predict the underwater noise emission by the installation of foundation piles offshore including the available noise mitigation strategies. Future challenges in the field are identified under the prism of the ever-increasing size of wind turbines and the emerging pile driving technologies.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: conditional wave energy resource parameters, dominant wave systems, joint wave energy distributions, marginal wave energy distributions, regional wave energy climate, wave energy resource
Opportunities and constraints for wave energy conversion technologies and projects are evaluated by identifying and characterizing the dominant wave energy systems for United States (US) coastal waters using marginal and joint distributions of the wave energy in terms of the peak period, wave direction, and month. These distributions are computed using partitioned wave parameters generated from a 30 year WaveWatch III model hindcast, and regionally averaged to identify the dominant wave systems contributing to the total annual available energy ( A A E ) for eleven distinct US wave energy climate regions. These dominant wave systems are linked to the wind systems driving their generation and propagation. In addition, conditional resource parameters characterizing peak period spread, directional spread, and seasonal variability, which consider dependencies of the peak period, direction, and month, are introduced to augment characterization methods recommended by international stand... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: advanced internal combustion engines, cryogenic injection and mixing, liquid nitrogen (LN2), real fluids thermodynamics, supercritical
In this paper we provide insight into the thermophysical properties and the dynamics of cryogenic jets. The motivation of the work is to optimise the use of cryogenic fluids in novel ultra low emission engines. For demonstration, we use conditions relevant to an internal combustion engine currently being developed by Dolphin N2 and the University of Brighton, the CryoPower recuperated split cycle engine (RSCE). The principle of this engine is a split-cycle combustion concept which can use cryogenic injection in the compression cylinder to achieve isothermal compression and thus help maximise the efficiency of the engine. Combined experimental and numerical findings are presented and the effects of atomisation dynamics of the LN 2 are explored at both sub- and supercritical conditions in order to cover different pressure and temperature conditions representative of the engine compression cycle. For subcritical regimes, we observe that the appearance of the jet coincides with the... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: averaged model, DC–DC converter, diode–transistor switch, electrothermal model, IGBT, power electronics, self-heating, thermal phenomena
This study proposes an electrothermal averaged model of the diode−transistor switch including insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) and a rapid switching diode. The presented model has the form of subcircuits dedicated for simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE) and it makes it possible to compute characteristics of DC−DC converters at the steady state considering self-heating phenomena, both in the diode and in IGBT. This kind of model allows computations of voltages, currents and internal temperatures of all used semiconductor devices at the steady state. The formulas used in this model are adequate for both: continuous conducting mode (CCM) and discontinuous conducting mode (DCM). Correctness of the proposed model is verified experimentally for a boost converter including IGBT. Good accuracy in modeling these converter characteristics is obtained.

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: climate change, Indian Ocean, ocean wave power, Sri Lanka, wave projections
This study investigates the impacts of global climate change on the future wave power potential, taking Sri Lanka as a case study from the northern Indian Ocean. The geographical location of Sri Lanka, which receives long-distance swell waves generated in the Southern Indian Ocean, favors wave energy-harvesting. Waves projected by a numerical wave model developed using Simulating Waves Nearshore Waves (SWAN) wave model, which is forced by atmospheric forcings generated by an Atmospheric Global Climate Model (AGCM) within two time slices that represent “present” and “future” (end of century) wave climates, are used to evaluate and compare present and future wave power potential around Sri Lanka. The results reveal that there will be a 12−20% reduction in average available wave power along the south-west and south-east coasts of Sri Lanka in future. This reduction is due mainly to changes to the tropical south-west monsoon system because of global climate change. The available wave power... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: LCOE, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar PV, South Korea, stochastic
With the development of renewable energy, a key measure for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, interest in the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) is increasing. Although the input variables used in the LCOE calculation, such as capacity factor, capital expenditure, annual power plant operations and maintenance cost, discount and interest rate, and economic life, vary according to region and project, most existing studies estimate the LCOE by using a deterministic methodology. In this study, the stochastic approach was used to estimate the LCOE for solar photovoltaic (PV) in South Korea. In addition, this study contributed to deriving realistic analysis results by securing the actual data generated in the solar PV project compared to the existing studies. The results indicate that the LCOE for commercial solar power ranged from KRW 115 (10 cents)/kWh to KRW 197.4 (18 cents)/kWh at a confidence level of 95%. The median was estimated at KRW 160.03 (15 cents)/kWh. The LCOE for residentia... [more]

Watcharakorn Pinthurat, Branislav Hredzak
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive frequency droop control, battery energy storage system, frequency restoration, state of charge, virtual inertia
The penetration and integration of renewable energy sources into modern power systems has been increasing over recent years. This can lead to frequency excursion and low inertia due to renewable energy sources’ intermittency and absence of rotational synchronous machines. Battery energy storage systems can play a crucial role in providing the frequency compensation because of their high ramp rate and fast response. In this paper, a decentralized frequency control system composed of three parts is proposed. The first part provides adaptive frequency droop control with its droop coefficient a function of the real-time state of charge of battery. The second part provides a fully decentralized frequency restoration. In the third part, a virtual inertia emulation improves the microgrid resilience. The presented results demonstrate that the proposed control system improves the microgrid resilience and mitigates the frequency deviation when compared with conventional ω -P droop control a... Joint Storage: A Mixed-Method Analysis of Consumer Perspectives on Community Energy Storage in Germany
Esther Hoffmann, Franziska Mohaupt
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acceptance, battery storage, community storage, consumer, energy services, Energy Storage, prosumer, user
In this paper, we analyze consumer attitudes toward and interest in community energy storage (CES) in Germany, based on five focus group discussions and an online survey of private owners of photovoltaic (PV) systems, as well as written surveys and workshops with the residents of two residential developments where CES has been installed. We find that owners of PV systems are generally receptive to the idea of CES but are unfamiliar with it. They assume that CES is more resource- and cost-efficient than residential storage and appreciate the idea of professionally managed operation and maintenance, but are skeptical of whether fair and transparent distribution and billing can be realized. Consumers express a need for ancillary services, such as monitoring, information or energy management, but the interest in such services, however, is strongly dependent on their perception of the costs versus potential savings.

Keywords: cooling demands, electrochromic glazing, energy savings, EnergyPlus, heating demands, high WWR, office building, office lighting, thermochromic glazing
This paper assesses energy savings in terms of heating, cooling, and artificial lighting achieved in an office building with a high Window to Wall Ratio (WWR), located in Athens and Stockholm. Six different configurations of triple pane windows combining thermochromic, electrochromic, and low-e coatings in Insulated Glass Units (IGUs) are examined to quantify the potential of increasing energy savings in office buildings. The combination of electrochromic and thermochromic layers on the outer pane of the triple IGU, achieved an 18.5% and 8.1% reduction in annual primary energy use for Athens and Stockholm, respectively. The used switching strategy ensured the visual comfort of the employees and provided adequate daylight in both cases. It was found that in Stockholm the cooling system can be downsized considerably, achieving important cost reduction in the HVAC system. The analysis also takes into account the reduction of thermal storage in the building envelope due to the switchable w... [more]

Keywords: fixed bed, gasification, Modelling, pyrolysis, thermally thick particle, torrefaction
Gasification of biomass in fixed bed gasifiers is a well-known technology, with its origins dating back to the beginning of 20th century. It is a technology with good prospects, in terms of small scale, decentralized power co-generation. However, the understanding of the process is still not fully developed. Therefore, assessment of the changes in the design of a gasifier is typically performed with extensive prototyping stage, thus introducing significant cost. This study presents experimental results of gasification of a single pellet and bed of particles of raw and torrefied wood. The procedure can be used for obtaining design parameters of a fixed bed gasifier. Results of two suits of experiments, namely pyrolysis and CO2 gasification are presented. Moreover, results of pyrolysis of pellets are compared against a numerical model, developed for thermally thick particles. Pyrolysis time, predicted by model, was in good agreement with experimental results, despite some differences in... [more]

Keywords: energy management, hybrid system, sizing optimization, smoothing, turbines layout, wake effect
A novel optimization strategy is proposed to achieve a reliable hybrid plant of wind, solar, and battery (HWSPS). This strategy’s purpose is to reduce the power losses in a wind farm and at the same time reduce the fluctuations in the output of HWSPS generation. In addition, the proposed strategy is different from previous studies in that it does not involve a load demand profile. The process of defining the HWSPS capacity is carried out in two main stages. In the first stage, an optimal wind farm is determined using the genetic algorithm subject to site dimensions and spacing between the turbines, taking Jensen’s wake effect model into consideration to eliminate the power losses due to the wind turbines’ layout. In the second stage, a numerical iterative algorithm is deployed to get the optimal combination of photovoltaic and energy storage system sizes in the search space based on the wind reference power generated by the moving average. The reliability indices and cost are the basis... [more]

Jacek Jaworski, Paweł Kułaga, Tomasz Blacharski
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diaphragm gas meter, gas measurement, hydrogen from renewable sources, P2G, power to gas, PtG
Power-to-gas technology plays a key role in the success of the energy transformation. This paper addresses issues related to the legal and technical regulations specifying the rules for adding hydrogen to the natural gas network. The main issue reviewed is the effects of the addition of hydrogen to natural gas on the durability of diaphragm gas meters. The possibility of adding hydrogen to the gas network requires confirmation of whether, within the expected hydrogen concentrations, long-term operation of gas meters will be ensured without compromising their metrological properties and operational safety. Methods for testing the durability of gas meters applied at test benches and sample results of durability tests of gas meters are presented. Based on these results, a metrological and statistical analysis was carried out to establish whether the addition of hydrogen affects the durability of gas meters over time. The most important conclusion resulting from the conducted study indicat... [more]

Keywords: Adsorption, adsorption enthalpy, adsorption equilibrium, aluminum fumarate, coating, cooling, heat of adsorption, heat pump, heat transformation, metal organic framework
Adsorption chillers offer an environmentally friendly solution for the valorisation of waste or solar heat for cooling demands. A recent application is high efficiency data centre cooling, where heat from CPUs is used to drive the process, providing cooling for auxiliary loads. The metal organic framework aluminium fumarate with water is potentially a suitable material pair for this low temperature driven application. A targeted heat exchanger design is a prerequisite for competitiveness, requiring, amongst other things, a sound understanding of adsorption equilibria and adsorption enthalpy. A novel method is employed for their determination based on small isothermal and isochoric state changes, applied with an apparatus developed initially for volume swing frequency response measurement, to samples with a binder-based adsorbent coating. The adsorption enthalpy is calculated through the Clausius−Clapeyron equation from the obtained slopes of the isotherm and isobar, while the absolute... [more]

The increasing demand for energy and the impacts generated by CO2 emissions make it necessary to harness all possible renewable sources of energy, like wave power. Nevertheless, climate change may generate significant variations in the amount of wave energy available in a certain area. The aim of this paper is to study potential changes in the wave energy resource in the Mediterranean coast of Morocco due to climate change. To do this, wave datasets obtained by four institutes during the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment in the Mediterranean Region (Med-CORDEX) project are used. The future conditions correspond to the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios from the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The results show that projected future wave power is very similar to that of the present considering the whole area, although at some specific points there are slight changes that are more evident for the RCP8.5 scenario. Keywords: bioenergy, chemical kinetics, free fatty acid, Modelling, reaction rate constant
To date, to simulate biodiesel production, kinetic models from different authors have been provided, each one usually applied to the use of a specific vegetable oil and experimental conditions. Models, which may include esterification, besides transesterification simulation, were validated with their own experimental conditions and raw material. Moreover, information about the intermediate reaction steps, besides catalyst concentration variation, is either rare or nonexistent. Here, in this work, a universal mathematical model comprising the chemical kinetics of a two-step (esterification and transesterification) vegetable oil-based biodiesel reaction is proposed. The proposed model is universal, as it may simulate any vegetable oil biodiesel reaction from the literature. For this purpose, a mathematical model using the software MATLAB has been designed. Using the mathematical model, the estimation of mass variation with time, of both reactants and products, as well as glyceride conver... [more]

Keywords: Alternative Fuels, development of alternative fuels in Poland, electromobility, transport sector
The aim of this publication is to review the current state and possibilities of developing electromobility and alternative fuels in Poland. It was found that the current market for alternative fuels in Poland is insufficiently developed. At the end of 2019 in Poland, liquefied petroleum gas-powered cars accounted for approximately 3.3 million pieces, which amounts to 14.3% all passenger vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes of gross vehicle weight. There were over 9000 electric cars on the road, the share of which accounted for 0.04% of domestic passenger transport. The lack of a sufficient number of charging points, inhibiting the development of electromobility, was also noted. There were approximately 4000 (0.02%) passenger cars powered by compressed natural gas. Liquefied gas-powered vehicles were exclusively public transport vehicles or trucks. The share of biofuels in the Polish transport sector stands at 4%, while European Union requirements are at a level of 10%. Although there is huge pote... [more]
