Experimental Investigation of the Viscosity Parameters Ranges—Case Study of Engine Oils in the Selected Viscosity Grade
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy-saving, engine oil, Stabinger, viscosity
The primary objective of the research was to compare the viscosity parameters of the same viscosity grade engine oils, as declared by the manufacturers, to the actual laboratory measurements. The secondary objective was to briefly investigate (1) what kind of information oil manufacturers provide in the product data sheets of the studied oils, and (2) the potential savings resulting from the use of the energy efficient oils. The study material consisted of 42 selected synthetic engine oils that belong to the 5W-30 viscosity grade. Stabinger SVM 3001 viscometer was used to determine kinematic viscosity at −20 °C, 40 °C, 100 °C and 130 °C. The HTHS (high temperature high shear), CCS (cold cranking simulator), FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy) and GC (Gas Chromatography) measurements were also performed for the samples that had the lowest and the highest kinematic viscosity. Large differences (5−25%) between oil producers’ declarations and the results of laboratory tests were... [more]

Multi-Criteria Examination of Power-to-Gas Pathways under Stochastic Preferences
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: decision making, Energy Storage, fuzzy analytic hierarchy process, imprecise pairwise comparisons, power-to-gas, renewable energy integration
Power-to-gas is an energy storage and vector technology which can utilize off-peak power, assist in the integration of renewable power and provide needed fuel for industry and transportation. Further, power-to-gas is a useful technology for balancing surplus baseload and renewable energy generation with demand. There are numerous applications of power-to-gas in Europe, where renewable power is used to generate hydrogen for numerous applications. Examining each of these power-to-gas pathways across quantitative and qualitative criteria, this paper utilizes the stochastic fuzzy analytic hierarchy process to determine criteria weights. These weights are then fed to a multiple criteria decision analysis tool to determine the viability of each pathway for investors and policy makers. A sensitivity analysis is carried out by reprioritizing the criteria and re-evaluating the multiple criteria analysis. The two pathways that score highest under multiple criteria rankings are power-to-gas to mo... [more]

A Comprehensive Review of Strategies and Approaches for Enhancing the Performance of Thermoelectric Module
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, performance improvement approaches, TE module, thermoelectric conversion, thermoelectric cooler
In recent years, thermoelectric (TE) technology has been emerging as a promising alternative and environmentally friendly technology for power generators or cooling devices due to the increasingly serious energy shortage and environmental pollution problems. However, although TE technology has been found for a long time and applied in many professional fields, its low energy conversion efficiency and high cost also hinder its wide application. Thus, it is still urgent to improve the thermoelectric modules. This work comprehensively reviews the status of strategies and approaches for enhancing the performance of thermoelectrics, including material development, structure and geometry improvement, the optimization of a thermal management system, and the thermal structure design. In particular, the influence of contact thermal resistance and the improved optimization methods are discussed. This work covers many fields related to the enhancement of thermoelectrics. It is found that the main... [more]

Towards Non-Mechanical Hybrid Hydrogen Compression for Decentralized Hydrogen Facilities
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: activated carbons, electrochemical compressors, hydrogen compression, hydrogen storage, non-mechanical compressors
The cost of the hydrogen value chain needs to be reduced to allow the widespread development of hydrogen applications. Mechanical compressors, widely used for compressing hydrogen to date, account for more than 50% of the CAPEX (capital expenditure) in a hydrogen refueling station. Moreover, mechanical compressors have several disadvantages, such as the presence of many moving parts, hydrogen embrittlement, and high consumption of energy. Non-mechanical hydrogen compressors have proven to be a valid alternative to mechanical compressors. Among these, electrochemical compressors allow isothermal, and therefore highly efficient, compression of hydrogen. On the other hand, adsorption-desorption compressors allow hydrogen to be compressed through cooling/heating cycles using highly microporous materials as hydrogen adsorbents. A non-mechanical hybrid hydrogen compressor, consisting of a first electrochemical stage followed by a second stage driven by adsorption-desorption of hydrogen on ac... [more]

Analysis of the Potential for Gas Micro-Cogeneration Development in Poland Using the Monte Carlo Method
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cogeneration, Energy, household, micro-cogeneration, Monte Carlo
Micro-cogeneration (mCHP) is a promising solution for the generation of heat and electricity in households, it contributes to reducing carbon dioxide emissions in countries where the production of electricity is mainly based on fossil fuels. Its dissemination in Poland faces barriers in the form of high purchase prices in relation to electricity productivity. In this work 1% of the household population in Poland was analyzed using the Monte Carlo method. It was found that for mCHP to become economically profitable for a group of at least 10,000 households, its price should fall from around 18,000 euros (711.5 euros/kWth and 18,000 euros/kWe) to 4800 euros (189.7 euros/kWth and 4800 euros/kWe) and for 100,000 households to 4100 euros (162.1 euros/kWth and 4100 euros/kWe). These calculations were made for fixed gas and electricity prices. The analysis also included cases of various changes in gas and energy prices. Faster growth of electricity prices than gas prices reduce the profitabil... [more]

Hedging Strategies of Green Assets against Dirty Energy Assets
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: clean energy stocks, crude oil, determinants, dirty energy assets, energy ETF, green bonds, hedge
Previous studies argue that the relationships between clean/green and dirty energy assets are time-varying, but there is a lack of evidence on the hedging ability of clean energy stocks and green bonds for dirty assets, such as crude oil and an energy stock index exchange traded fund (ETF), and the portfolio implications. Furthermore, potential drivers of the dynamics of the hedge portfolio returns are still unknown. To address these research gaps, the authors provide an extensive analysis of the hedging ability of clean/green assets against two dirty energy assets (crude oil prices and energy ETF) using daily data from 3 January 2012 to 29 November 2019. Using corrected dynamic conditional correlation models, the authors model correlation and then compute hedge ratios and hedging effectiveness, which all seem to vary with time. The results from hedging effectiveness indicate that investors should follow a dynamic hedging strategy and that clean energy stocks are more effective hedge t... [more]

Can Crude Oil Serve as a Hedging Asset for Underlying Securities?—Research on the Heterogenous Correlation between Crude Oil and Stock Index
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hedging, oil price, stock markets, wavelet coherence
In the increasingly frequent global financial turmoil, investors prefer to invest in stable assets to hedge risks. Crude oil naturally has dual use value as a general commodity and as a financial asset, which has attracted wide attention. In this paper, we adopt a wavelet coherence analysis to study the standard of crude oil as a hedging asset and analyze the dynamic correlation of crude oil and stock market price fluctuations in the four economies of the United States, Japan, China and Hong Kong at different frequencies. The empirical evidence shows that crude oil can be conditionally used as a hedging asset for underlying securities. From the perspective of space, crude oil is suitable for investors in China’s stock market as a hedging asset, while for stock markets in the US, Japan and Hong Kong, the ability of crude oil to hedge risk has been greatly weakened. From the perspective of investment term, although crude oil cannot be regarded as a hedging asset for long-term investment,... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hexagonal heat exchanger, industrial waste heat recovery, output performance, temperature distribution, thermoelectric generator
To study on the thermoelectric power generation for industrial waste heat recovery applied in a hot-air blower, an experimental thermoelectric generator (TEG) bench with the hexagonal heat exchanger and commercially available Bi2Te3 thermoelectric modules (TEMs) was established, and its performance was analyzed. The influences of several important influencing factors such as heat exchanger material, inlet gas temperature, backpressure, coolant temperature, clamping pressure and external load current on the output power and voltage of the TEG were comparatively tested. Experimental results show that the heat exchanger material, inlet gas temperature, clamping pressure and hot gas backpressure significantly affect the temperature distribution of the hexagonal heat exchanger, the brass hexagonal heat exchanger with lower backpressure and coolant temperature using ice water mixture enhance the temperature difference of TEMs and the overall output performance of TEG. Furthermore, compared w... [more]

Using SCADA Data for Wind Turbine Condition Monitoring: A Systematic Literature Review
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, condition monitoring, fault prediction, SCADA data, wind turbine
Operation and maintenance (O&M) activities represent a significant share of the total expenditure of a wind farm. Of these expenses, costs associated with unexpected failures account for the highest percentage. Therefore, it is clear that early detection of wind turbine (WT) failures, which can be achieved through appropriate condition monitoring (CM), is critical to reduce O&M costs. The use of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data has recently been recognized as an effective solution for CM since most modern WTs record large amounts of parameters using their SCADA systems. Artificial intelligence (AI) techniques can convert SCADA data into information that can be used for early detection of WT failures. This work presents a systematic literature review (SLR) with the aim to assess the use of SCADA data and AI for CM of WTs. To this end, we formulated four research questions as follows: (i) What are the current challenges of WT CM? (ii) What are the WT components to wh... [more]

Study of Enhanced Oil Recovery and Adsorption Using Glycerol in Surfactant Solution
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Adsorption, enhanced oil recovery, glycerol, saponified coconut oil, surfactant flooding
Over time, oil production in a reservoir tends to decrease, which makes it difficult to flow through the reservoir to the well, making its production increasingly difficult and costly. Due to their physical properties, such as reducing the water/oil interfacial tension, surfactants have been used in enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes, however, their adsorption presents as an undesirable and inevitable factor and can decrease the efficiency of the method. This work’s main objective is to evaluate the effect of glycerol in the adsorption of surfactants in sandstones, as well as in the recovery factor during EOR. Brine solutions containing the nonionic surfactant saponified coconut oil (SCO), with and without glycerol, were used in the adsorption and oil recovery tests in sandstone. Adsorption, recovery, rheological, and thermogravimetric analysis were carried out. Regarding the surfactant/glycerol/brine solution, there was an improvement in the oil mobility, as the glycerol contribute... [more]

Experimental Investigation on a Vapor Injection Heat Pump System with a Single-Stage Compressor
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: gas–liquid separator, heat pump, heating performance, single-stage compressor, vapor injection
In this study, a heat pump of 10 kW with vapor injection using refrigerant of R410A was developed. A vapor injection pipe connecting a gas−liquid separator at the outlet of the main expansion valve and the suction of a single-stage rotary compressor was designed. The heating performance of this vapor injection heat pump was investigated and analyzed at different compressor frequencies and primary temperatures. The experimental results show that for the heat pump without vapor injection, the heating capacity increased linearly with the compressor frequency, while the heating coefficient of performance (COP) decreased linearly with the compressor frequency for each tested primary temperature. The developed vapor injection technique is able to increase the heat pump system’s heating capacity and heating COP when the injection ratio R falls into the range 0.16−0.17. The refrigerant mass flow rate can be increased in the vapor injection heat pump cycle due to the decreased specific volume o... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Kaplan turbine, mesh displacement, rotating vortex rope, transient operation
The aim of this study is to develop a reliable numerical model that provides additional information to experimental measurements and contributes to a better exploitation of hydraulic turbines during transient operation. The paper presents a numerical analysis of the flow inside a Kaplan turbine model operated at a fixed runner blade angle during load variation from the best efficiency point (BEP) to part load (PL) operation. A mesh displacement is defined in order to model the closure of the guide vanes. Two different types of inlet boundary conditions are tested for the transient numerical simulations: linear flow rate variation (InletFlow) and constant total pressure (InletTotalPressure). A time step analysis is performed and the influence of the time discretization over the fluctuating quantities is discussed. Velocity measurements at the corresponding operating points are available to validate the simulation. Spectrogram plots of the pressure signals show the times of appearance of... [more]

Evaluation of a Modified Equivalent Fuel-Consumption Minimization Strategy Considering Engine Start Frequency and Battery Parameters for a Plugin Hybrid Two-Wheeler
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery ageing, engine switching and charge sustained, equivalent fuel-consumption minimization strategy (ECMS), fuel economy, hybrid two-wheeler, load-levelling control (LLC), parallel plugin hybrid
An appropriate energy management strategy is essential to enhance the performance of hybrid electric vehicles. A novel modified equivalent fuel-consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) is developed considering the engine operating point deviation from the optimum operating line. This paper focuses on an all-inclusive evaluation of this modified ECMS with other state-of-art energy management strategies concerning battery ageing, engine switching along with fuel economy and charge sustenance. The simulation-based results of a hybrid two-wheeler concept are analysed, which shows that the modified ECMS offers the highest benefit compared to rule-based controllers concerning fuel economy and reduction in engine switching events. However, the improvement in fuel economy using modified ECMS has significant negative potential effects on critical battery parameters influencing battery ageing. The results are analysed and found consistent for two different drive cycles and three different powert... [more]

Natural Polymers for Green Supercapacitors
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electrospinning, green supercapacitor, ionic liquid, pullulan, water processable polymer
Water-processable natural polymers represent a valuable alternative for the sustainable manufacturing of electrical double layer capacitors (EDLCs). Here, we demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of the use of pullulan to produce high mass loading electrodes (>10 mg cm−2) at low binder content (10%) for ionic-liquid based EDLCs. Pullulan has also been processed as a porous separator by electrospinning. Its ionic resistance and thermal stability have been evaluated in different electrolytes and were found to be superior compared to those of a cellulose triacetate electrospun separator. Pullulan-ionic liquid EDLCs were, thus, assembled and charged up to 3.2 V. The EDLCs delivered specific energy and power of 7.2 Wh kg−1 and 3.7 kW kg−1 and featured good cycling stability over 5000 cycles.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aFRR, battery aging, electric vehicle, frequency restoration reserve, grid service, photovoltaics, prosumer, self-consumption, self-sufficiency, smart charging
The emergence of electric vehicles offers the opportunity to decarbonize the transportation and mobility sector. With smart charging strategies and the use of electricity generated from renewable sources, electric vehicle owners can reduce their electricity bill as well as reduce their carbon footprint. We investigated smart charging strategies for electric vehicle charging at household and workplace sites with photovoltaic systems. Furthermore, we investigated the participation of an electric vehicle in the provision of positive automatic frequency restoration reserve (aFRR) in Germany from 30 October 2018 to 31 July 2019. We find that the provision of positive aFRR in Germany returns a positive net return. The positive net return is, however, not sufficient to cover the current investment cost for a necessary control unit. For home charging, we find that self-sufficiency rates of up to 48.1% and an electricity cost reduction of 17.6% for one year can be reached with unidirectional sm... [more]

High-Speed Imaging of Spray Formation and Combustion in an Optical Engine: Effects of Injector Aging and TPGME as a Fuel Additive
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: diesel combustion, injector aging, natural luminosity, spray formation, TPGME
High-speed imaging of fuel sprays and combustion is conducted on a light-duty optical engine to investigate the effects of injector aging, with a focus on soot. The spray behaviors of one new and one aged injector are compared using Mie-scattering. In addition to this, the combustion process of a baseline diesel fuel and a blend with TPGME (tripropylene glycol monomethyl ether) are compared using natural luminosity (NL) imaging. TPGME is an oxygenated additive which can be used to reduce soot emissions. X-ray tomography of the two injectors demonstrates that the aging does not lead to significant geometry differences, nor to formation of dense internal nozzle deposits. Both injectors show similar liquid penetration and spreading angle. However, the aged injector shows a prolonged injection and more fuel dribbling after the injection events, leading to a higher injection quantity. The fuel quantity difference shows a larger impact on the NL at low load than the TPGME additive, indicatin... [more]

Keywords: heat pump, HVAC, metal-hydride, non-vapor compression, porous media, temperature, thermal wave
In this study, we investigate a numerical-modeling method uniquely performing analyses of 50 different metal hydrides to find the optimized thermal effect. This paper presents a metal-hydride thermal energy conversion method, which offers an alternative approach to the traditional vapor-compression heat pump associated with conventional heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC). The authors have developed an innovative heat pump applicable to non-vapor compression-based systems, which are in compliance with low-temperature heat source requirements for operation. The new heat pump has a high-energy savings potential for both heating and cooling that featured two different metal-hydrides, that are distributed inside parallel channels filled with porous media. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dynamic analysis, fatigue life assessment, flexible power cables, floating offshore wind turbine, wind energy
In this paper, a procedure is proposed to determine the fatigue life of the electrical cable connected to a 5 MW floating offshore wind turbine, supported by a spar-buoy at a water depth of 320 m, by using a numerical approach that takes into account site-specific wave and wind characteristics. The effect of the intensity and the simultaneous actions of waves and wind are investigated and the outcomes for specific cable configurations are shown. Finally, the fatigue life of the cable is evaluated. All analyses have been carried out using the Ansys AQWA computational code, which is a commercial code for the numerical investigation of the dynamic response of floating and fixed marine structures under the combined action of wind, waves and current. Furthermore, this paper applies the FAST NREL numerical code for comparison with the ANSYS AQWA results.

Optimal Dimensions of a Semisubmersible Floating Platform for a 10 MW Wind Turbine
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 10 MW wind turbines, floating offshore wind turbines, frequency domain model, large floating platform, platform optimization, semisubmersible platform
In this paper, an optimal semisubmersible platform is sought considering two key geometry variables: the diameter of the outer cylinders and their radial distance from the platform centre. The goal is to identify a platform configuration able to most efficiently contrast the combined wind-wave action, keeping the platform dimensions as small as possible. The amplitude of the Response Amplitude Operator (RAO) peaks and the integral area of the RAOs in a range of excited frequencies for the selected degrees of freedom are chosen as targets to be minimised. Through an efficient frequency domain simulation approach, we show that upscaling techniques proposed in the literature may lead to overdesigned platforms and that smaller and more performing platforms can be identified. In particular, the optimised platform shows a reduction of about 51% in parked and 54% in power production of the heave RAO peak, and a reduction of about 37% in parked and 50% in power production of the pitch RAO.

Households’ Willingness to Pay for Substituting Natural Gas with Renewable Methane: A Contingent Valuation Experiment in South Korea
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bio-gas, contingent valuation, Natural Gas, price premium, renewable methane, willingness to pay
South Korea is planning to substitute some residential natural gas (NG), a fossil fuel that relies on imports, with renewable methane (RM) from bio-gas, a renewable energy source. Thus, information about households’ willingness to pay (WTP) for implementing the plan is widely needed. This article, therefore, examines the WTP using an economic approach of contingent valuation (CV). More specifically, 1000 households were asked about the additional WTP for RM over NG through in-person face-to-face surveys across the country, adopting a dichotomous choice question format, during August 2018. As a few interviewees responded zero WTP for various reasons, a spike model that could reflect zero WTP observations was utilized. The household additional WTP for RM over NG was estimated, with statistical significance, as 191.46 Korean won (USD 0.17) per m3 and worth 31.9% of the average price of residential NG. This value means a price premium for RM compared to NG. In other words, this study found... [more]

Analysis of Diesel Knock for High-Altitude Heavy-Duty Engines Using Optical Rapid Compression Machines
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: auto-ignition, diesel knock, rapid compression machine, reaction front propagation, spray impingement
In high altitude regions, affected by the low-pressure and low-temperature atmosphere, diesel knock is likely to be encountered in heavy-duty engines operating at low-speed and high-load conditions. Pressure oscillations during diesel knock are commonly captured by pressure transducers, while there is a lack of direct evidence and visualization images, such that its fundamental formation mechanism is still unclear. In this study, optical experiments on diesel knock with destructive pressure oscillations were investigated in an optical rapid compression machine. High-speed direct photography and simultaneous pressure acquisition were synchronically performed, and different injection pressures and ambient pressures were considered. The results show that for the given ambient temperature and pressure, diesel knock becomes prevalent at higher injection pressures where fuel spray impingement becomes enhanced. Higher ambient pressure can reduce the tendency to diesel knock under critical con... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: concentrator photovoltaic, experimental and theoretical model, working fluid temperature
A linear focus Concentrator Photovoltaic and Thermal (CPV/T) system can match the thermal demands of a user. The evaluation of the cooling fluid temperature levels of a CPV/T system is fundamental to understand if this system is capable of satisfying the typical thermal requirements of a residential user (heating, cooling and domestic hot water). First, an experimental line-focus CPV/T system, realized in the Laboratory of Applied Thermodynamics of the University of Salerno (Italy), has allowed to determine the cooling fluid temperature at the CPV/T system outlet. Successively, the cooling fluid temperatures, experimentally obtained, have been compared with the same temperatures calculated by means of a theoretical model under the same operation conditions. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: BECCS, CHP, CLOU, cogeneration, flue gas condensation, process integration
Bioenergy with CO2 capture and storage (BECCS) is a promising negative emission technology (NET). When using sustainably produced biomass as fuel, BECCS allows the production of power and heat with negative CO2 emissions. The main technical challenges hindering the deployment of BECCS technologies include energy penalties associated with the capture process. This work evaluates the performance of an advanced CO2 capture technology, chemical looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU), in conjunction with biomass-fired combined heat and power (CHP) generation. Results from a MATLAB/Simulink reactor model were incorporated in a plant and integration model developed in a commercial process simulation software to quantify the key performance indicators of the CLOU-integrated CHP plant. Both energy and exergy analysis were conducted. The results show a remarkably low efficiency penalty of 0.7% compared to a conventional reference plant, and a high carbon capture efficiency of 97%. Ammonia borane H3N−BH3 (AB) was re-discovered, in the 2000s, to play an important role in the developing hydrogen economy, but it has seemingly failed; at best it has lagged behind. The present review aims at analyzing, in the context of more than 300 articles, the reasons why AB gives a sense that it has failed as an anodic fuel, a liquid-state hydrogen carrier and a solid hydrogen carrier. The key issues AB faces and the key challenges ahead it has to address (i.e., those hindering its technological deployment) have been identified and itemized. The reality is that preventable errors have been made. First, some critical issues have been underestimated and thereby understudied, whereas others have been disproportionally considered. Second, the potential of AB has been overestimated, and there has been an undoubted lack of realistic and practical vision of it. Third, the competition in the field is severe, with more promising and cheaper hydrides in front of AB. Fourth, AB has been con... [more]
