A Control Scheme with the Variable-Speed Pitch System for Wind Turbines during a Zero-Voltage Ride Through
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: control scheme, low-voltage ride through (LVRT), overspeed protection control (OPC), variable-speed pitch, wind turbine (WT), zero-voltage ride through (ZVRT)
Zero-voltage ride through (ZVRT) is the extreme case of low-voltage ride through (LVRT), which represents the optimal grid-connection capability of wind turbines (WTs). Enforcing ZVRT will improve the dynamic performance of WTs and therefore significantly enhance the resiliency of renewable-rich grids. A control scheme that includes a pitch system is an essential control aspect of WTs riding through voltage dips; however, the existing control scheme with a pitch system for LVRT cannot distinguish between a ZVRT status and a power-loss condition, and, consequently, does not meet the ZVRT requirements. A system-level control scheme with a pitch system for ZVRT that includes pitch system modeling, control logic, control circuits, and overspeed protection control (OPC) is proposed in this paper for the first time in ZVRT research. Additionally, the field data are shared, a fault analysis of an overspeed accident caused by a voltage dip that describes the operating status at the WT-collapse... [more]

On the Comparison of 2- and 4-Wheel-Drive Electric Vehicle Layouts with Central Motors and Single- and 2-Speed Transmission Systems
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 2-wheel-drive, 4-wheel-drive, Electric vehicle, optimal gear selection, optimal torque distribution, single- and 2-speed transmissions
Electric vehicles (EVs) are characterized by a significant variety of possible powertrain configurations, ranging from one to four electric machines, which can have an on-board or in-wheel layout. Multiple models of production EVs have recently been introduced on the market, with 4-wheel-drive (4WD) architectures based on a central motor within each axle, connected to the wheels through a gearbox, a differential, and half-shafts. In parallel, an important body of research and industrial demonstrations have covered the topic of 2-speed transmission systems for EVs, with the target of enhancing longitudinal acceleration and gradeability performance, while increasing the operating efficiency of the electric powertrain. Although several recent studies compare different electric powertrain architectures, to the best of the authors’ knowledge the literature misses a comparison between 2-wheel-drive (2WD) and 4WD configurations for the same EV, from the viewpoint of drivability and energy con... Voltage Harmonic Impacts on Electric Motors: A Comparison between IE2, IE3 and IE4 Induction Motor Classes
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: efficiency classes, energy efficiency motors, harmonic distortion, line start permanent magnet motor (LSPMM), Spearman correlation
Global energy systems are undergoing a transition process towards renewable energy and energy efficiency practices. Induction motors play an important role in this energy transformation process since they are widely used as industrial loads, representing more than 53% of global energy consumption. With more countries adopting minimum energy performance standards through more efficient induction motors, comparisons between these new technologies in the presence of electrical disturbances must be systematically evaluated before adopting a substitution policy in the industry. To this end, this work presents a comparative analysis of the impact of harmonic voltages on the performance and temperature rise of electric motors classes IE2, IE3 and IE4 in the same operational conditions in view of future substitutions. The results show that under ideal operating conditions the IE4 class permanent magnet motor has better performance in terms of consumption and temperature, however presenting non... [more]

Crystallization of Amorphous Silicon via Excimer Laser Annealing and Evaluation of Its Passivation Properties
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: amorphous hydrogenated silicon film, crystallinity, excimer laser annealing, passivation, thermal annealing
The crystallization of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) is essential for improving solar cell efficiency. In this study, we analyzed the crystallization of a-Si:H via excimer laser annealing (ELA) and compared this process with conventional thermal annealing. ELA prevents thermal damage to the substrate while maintaining the melting point temperature. Here, we used xenon monochloride (XeCl), krypton fluoride (KrF), and deep ultra-violet (UV) lasers with wavelengths of 308, 248, and 266 nm, respectively. Laser energy densities and shot counts were varied during ELA for a-Si:H films between 20 and 80 nm thick. All the samples were subjected to forming gas annealing to eliminate the dangling bonds in the film. The ELA samples were compared with samples subjected to thermal annealing performed at 850−950 °C for a-Si:H films of the same thickness. The crystallinity obtained via deep UV laser annealing was similar to that obtained using conventional thermal annealing. The optimal pass... [more]

Synchronous Generator Out of Step Detection Using Real Time Load Angle Data
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air gap, load angle, loss of synchronicity, out of step generator protection, power system stability, synchronous generator
Although the power system usually always appears stable and reliable to consumers, a lot of work and research goes into keeping the power system both stable and reliable under constantly changing conditions and in these increasingly demanding times. One of the key issues in the power system is maintaining stability after large disturbances in order to prevent the loss of synchronicity of the generators in the system. Today’s generator protection systems mostly use measurements of impedance change to detect generator out of step. This article discusses the possibility of detecting the loss of synchronicity by using real time load angle measurements. The authors propose a real time load angle measurement algorithm and present the results of the algorithm’s testing performed on a real hydrogenerator. The results show that the developed algorithm gives highly accurate real time load angle measurements with the maximum possible resolution and that the load angle can be used for detecting th... A Comprehensive Guide to Different Fracturing Technologies: A Review
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: different hydraulic fracturing, guide to different fracturing technologies, natural gas extraction technologies, shale gas extraction technologies
Hydraulic fracturing has made the production of gas more economical. Shale gas possesses the potential to arise as a main natural gas source worldwide. It has been assessed that the top 42 countries, including the U.S., are predicted to own 7299 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of technically recoverable shale gas resources. The main goal of this paper is to serve as a guide of different shale gas extraction methods. The significance of these methods and possible pros and cons are determined. Each technique was explained with the support of literature review. Specifically, this paper revealed that some fracking methods such as pulsed arc electrohydraulic discharges (PAED), plasma stimulation and fracturing technology (PSF), thermal (cryogenic) fracturing, enhanced bacterial methanogenesis, and heating of rock mass are at the concept stage for conventional and other unconventional resources. Thus, these found to be significant for stimulating natural gas wells, which provides very good product... [more]

Novel Dynamic Resistance Equalizer for Parallel-Connected Battery Configurations
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery equalization, design optimization, dynamic resistance equalizer (DRE), second-life battery energy storage system (SL-BESS), state-of-charge (SOC)
As the number of parallel battery connections in an energy storage system is increased to extend the energy capacity and second-life batteries are actively adopted, the battery is more prone to cell inconsistency issues. The difference in the internal impedance and the mismatched state-of-charge accelerates the self-balancing effect between the parallel branches to reduce cell utilization and eventually results in harmful effects, both to the lifetime and to the safety of the batteries. However, conventional methods only partially mitigate the parallel inconsistency issue. This paper proposes a dynamic resistance equalizer for parallel-connected battery configurations to improve equalization performance. The optimal design procedure is also presented to minimize the power loss and equalization time. The overall performance is experimentally verified by a sequence of tests for a Li-ion battery in a 2S-4P configuration. The experimental results show that the proposed method dissipates le... [more]

Gasification of Shenhua Bituminous Coal with CO2: Effect of Coal Particle Size on Kinetic Behavior and Ash Fusibility
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ash fusibility, bituminous coal, gasification kinetics, particle size
Coal gasification is the process that produces valuable gaseous mixtures consisting primarily of H2 and CO, which can be used to produce liquid fuel and various kinds of chemicals. The literature shows that the effect of particle size on coal gasification and fusibility of coal ash is not clear. In this study, the gasification kinetics and ash fusibility of three coal samples with different particle size ranges were investigated. Thermogravimetric results of coal under a CO2 atmosphere showed that the whole weight loss process consisted of three stages: the loss of moisture, the release of volatile matter, and char gasification with CO2. Coal is a heterogeneous material containing impurities. Different grinding fineness leads to different liberation degrees for impurities. As for the effect of particle size on TG (thermogravimetry) curves, we found that the final solid residue amount was the largest for the coal sample with the smallest particle size. Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming Formulation of Contingency Constrained Optimal Power Flow with Photovoltaic Generation
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: contingency constrained optimal power flow, optimal power flow, quadratically constrained quadratic programming
Contingency Constrained Optimal Power Flow (CCOPF) differs from traditional Optimal Power Flow (OPF) because its generation dispatch is planned to work with state variables between constraint limits, considering a specific contingency. When it is not desired to have changes in the power dispatch after the contingency occurs, the CCOPF is studied with a preventive perspective, whereas when the contingency occurs and the power dispatch needs to change to operate the system between limits in the post-contingency state, the problem is studied with a corrective perspective. As current power system software tools mainly focus on the traditional OPF problem, having the means to solve CCOPF will benefit power systems planning and operation. This paper presents a Quadratically Constrained Quadratic Programming (QCQP) formulation built within the matpower environment as a solution strategy to the preventive CCOPF. Moreover, an extended OPF model that forces the network to meet all constraints un... [more]

Sub- and Supercritical Water Liquefaction of Kraft Lignin and Black Liquor Derived Lignin
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: black liquor, hydrothermal liquefaction, lignin from black liquor
To mitigate global warming, humankind has been forced to develop new efficient energy solutions based on renewable energy sources. Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is a promising technology that can efficiently produce bio-oil from several biomass sources. The HTL process uses sub- or supercritical water for producing bio-oil, water-soluble organics, gaseous products and char. Black liquor mainly contains cooking chemicals (mainly alkali salts) lignin and the hemicellulose parts of the wood chips used for cellulose digestion. This review explores the effects of different process parameters, solvents and catalysts for the HTL of black liquor or black liquor-derived lignin. Using short residence times under near- or supercritical water conditions may improve both the quality and the quantity of the bio-oil yield. The quality and yield of bio-oil can be further improved by using solvents (e.g., phenol) and catalysts (e.g., alkali salts, zirconia). However, the solubility of alkali salts pr... [more]

Development of Enhancing Battery Management for Reusing Automotive Lithium-Ion Battery
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive control theory, battery management system (BMS), internal resistances, open-circuit voltage, reused battery
In this study, a battery management system (BMS) is developed for reused lithium-ion battery (RLIB). Additional enhancing functions of battery management are established, i.e., estimation of life-sensitized parameters and life extension. Life-sensitizing parameters mainly include open-circuit voltage (OCV) and internal resistances (IRs). They are sensitized parameters individually relative to state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH). For estimating these two parameters, an adaptive control scheme is implemented in BMS. This online adaptive control approach has been extensively applied to nonlinear systems with uncertainties. In two experiments, OCV and IRs of reused battery packs are accurately extracted from working voltage and discharge current. An offline numerical model using a schematic method is applied to verify the applicability and efficiency of this proposed online scheme. Furthermore, a solution of actively extending life by using an ultracapacitor to share peak power... [more]

Keywords: CO2 emissions efficiency, data envelopment analysis, Energy Efficiency, network DEA, SBM
Measuring changes in energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions of various large economies is fundamental for analyzing the impact and effectiveness of various policies in this direction. This study analyzes intertemporal changes in energy and CO2 emissions efficiency of economies by applying a network data envelopment analysis approach that takes into consideration the internal structure of the analysis units. We have applied two divisional network data envelopment analysis models for analysis of the economic and distributive efficiency of economies from 2001 to 2011. The results are very useful in analyzing the situation; we found that none of the economies was efficient in both aspects in the sample period, implying that none of the countries in the analysis was efficient in the production and distribution of economic outputs simultaneously. Brazil, Canada, China and Germany showed improvement in economic efficiency but the distribution efficiency of the most of the economies i... [more]

Predictive Adaptive Filter for Reducing Total Harmonics Distortion in PV Systems
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: adaptive filters, converter, harmonics, inverters, photovoltaics, PV, THD, THD reduction
This paper presents a new method for reducing the total harmonic distortion (THD) of photovoltaic (PV) systems by using an adaptive filter based on a predictive model. Instead of reducing the produced THD at each stage of the PV system, a one-step process is implemented at the end stage. The connection topology of the adaptive filter is similar to normal active and passive filters. The main difference is its ability to adjust the filtering coefficients while others cannot. The proposed method is applied to a single-phase standalone PV system by adopting least mean square (LMS), normalized LMS (NLMS) and leaky LMS algorithms to verify the validity of the proposed method. Various values of filter length and step size are evaluated, and results indicate that the proposed method can reduce THD in the current signal of the PV system significantly by using all of the mentioned algorithms. Different step sizes and filter lengths directly influence the effectiveness of the THD reduction, with... [more]

A Wind Energy Conversion System Based on a Generator with Modulated Magnetic Flux
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: current modulator, diode rectifier, magnetic flux, magnetomotive force, PMSG
In this work, the concept of an energy conversion system for wind turbines based on the modified permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is presented. In the generator, a pair of three-phase windings is used, one of which is connected in a “star” and the second in a “delta” configuration. At the outputs of both windings, two six-pulse uncontrolled (diode) rectifiers are included. These rectifiers are mutually coupled by a specially designed pulse transformer, whose primary winding is powered by the power electronics converter—the so-called “current modulator”—which, in this case, operates as a magnetic flux modulator, in the generator. The modulator provides a quasi-sinusoidal magnetomotive force (mmf) in the stator of the machine. The whole system is connected to the power grid via a dedicated voltage source inverter (VSI) converter. The main objective of the elaborated solution is to provide high efficiency conversion of mechanical (wind) energy into electricity by means of a r... [more]

Hydrokinetic Power Conversion Using Vortex-Induced Oscillation with Cubic Restoring Force
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alternating lift technologies, cubic spring-stiffness, hydrokinetic energy, vortex-induced vibrations
A cubic-spring restoring function with high-deformation stiffening is introduced to passively improve the harnessed marine hydrokinetic power by using flow-induced oscillations/vibrations (FIO/V) of a cylinder. In these FIO/V experiments, a smooth, rigid, single-cylinder on elastic end-supports is tested at Reynolds numbers ranging from 24,000 < Re < 120,000. The parameters of the tested current energy converter (CEC) are cubic stiffness and linear damping. Using the second generation of digital virtual spring-damping (Vck) controller developed by the Marine Renewable Energy Laboratory (MRELab), the cubic modeling of the oscillator stiffness is tested. Experimental results show the influence of the parameter variation on the amplitude, frequency, energy conversion, energy efficiency, and power of the converter. All experiments are conducted in the low turbulence-free surface water (LTFSW) channel of the MRELab of the University of Michigan. The main conclusions are: (1) The nonli... [more]

Performance Enhancement of Nitrogen Dual Expander and Single Mixed Refrigerant LNG Processes Using Jaya Optimization Approach
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: design optimization, economic analysis, exergy destruction, Jaya, liquefaction processes, Liquified Natural Gas, Natural Gas, offshore
The nitrogen (N2) expander and single mixed refrigerant (SMR) liquefaction processes are recognized as the most favorable options to produce liquefied natural gas (LNG) at small-scale and offshore sites. These processes have a simple and compact design that make them efficient with respect to their capital costs. Nevertheless, huge operating costs, mainly due to their lower energy efficiency, remains an ongoing issue. Utilization of design variables having non-optimal values is the primary cause for the lower energy efficiency; which, in turn, leads to exergy destruction (i.e., entropy generation), and ultimately the overall energy consumption is increased. The optimal execution of the design variables of LNG processes can be obtained through effective design optimization. However, the complex and highly non-linear interactions between design variables (refrigerant flowrates and operating pressures) and objective function (overall energy consumption) make the design optimization a diff... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blade, fabric-covered blade, structural testing, VABS, wind energy, wind turbine
Reducing the weight of a wind turbine blade is a major issue. Wind turbines have become larger in size to increase power generating efficiency. The blade has also grown in length to take more wind energy. A fabric-based wind turbine blade, introduced by General Electric Co., reduced the blade weight. In this study, a small fabric-covered blade for a 10 kW wind turbine was developed to verify structural ability. The blade was designed on the cross-section using variational asymptotic beam sectional analysis (VABS), structural analysis was carried out using MSC.Nastran for the design loads. A modal analysis was performed to compare the modal frequency and mode shapes. Static structural testing and modal testing were fulfilled. The analysis results were compared with the testing results. The fabric-covered structure was confirmed to reduce the blade mass with sufficient strength.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: borehole heat exchangers, circuit arrangement, double U-tube, geothermal energy, ground heat exchangers, ground-source heat pumps, shank spacing, thermal performance, thermal resistance
Given that the issue of variations in geometrical parameters of the borehole heat exchanger (BHE) revolves around the phenomenon of thermal resistance, a thorough understanding of these parameters is beneficial in enhancing thermal performance of BHEs. The present study seeks to identify relative changes in the thermal performance of double U-tube BHEs triggered by alterations in circuit arrangements, as well as the shank spacing and the borehole length. The thermal performance of double U-tube BHEs with different configurations is comprehensively analyzed through a 3D transient numerical code developed by means of the finite element method. Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are widely recognized as energy-saving and environmentally friendly heating and air-conditioning equipment with broad applications. However, when conventional ASHPs are operated at a low ambient temperature, they suffer from problems such as high discharge temperature and low heating efficiency. To address these problems, this study designed a new type of dual evaporator combined with a compressor casing thermal storage heat pump system (DE-CCTS) on the basis of a low-temperature air source heat pump water heater with enhanced vapor injection (EVI). The proposed DE-CCTS used thermal storage phase change material (PCM), which was filled in the secondary evaporator (the thermal storage heat exchanger), to recover the waste heat of the compressor casing. Keywords: enhanced energy management system, Li-ion battery, microgrid, photovoltaic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, super-capacitor
This paper proposes an enhanced energy management system (EEMS) for a residential AC microgrid. The renewable energy-based AC microgrid with hybrid energy storage is broken down into three distinct parts: a photovoltaic (PV) array as a green energy source, a battery (BT) and a supercapacitor (SC) as a hybrid energy storage system (HESS), and apartments and electric vehicles, given that the system is for residential areas. The developed EEMS ensures the optimal use of the PV arrays’ production, aiming to decrease electricity bills while reducing fast power changes in the battery, which increases the reliability of the system, since the battery undergoes fewer charging/discharging cycles. The proposed EEMS is a hybrid control strategy, which is composed of two stages: a state machine (SM) control to ensure the optimal operation of the battery, and an operating mode (OM) for the best operation of the SC. A Study of Combustion Characteristics of Two Gasoline−Biodiesel Mixtures on RCEM Using Various Fuel Injection Pressures
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biodiesel, fuel injection pressure, Gasoline, GCI, RCEM
Experimental research was conducted on a rapid compression and expansion machine (RCEM) that has characteristics similar to a gasoline compression ignition (GCI) engine, using two gasoline−biodiesel (GB) blends—10% and 20% volume—with fuel injection pressures varying from 800 to 1400 bar. Biodiesel content lower than GB10 will result in misfires at fuel injection pressures of 800 bar and 1000 bar due to long ignition delays; this is why GB10 was the lowest biodiesel blend used in this experiment. The engine compression ratio was set at 16, with 1000 µs of injection duration and 12.5 degree before top dead center (BTDC). The results show that the GB20 had a shorter ignition delay than the GB10, and that increasing the injection pressure expedited the autoignition. The rate of heat release for both fuel mixes increased with increasing fuel injection pressure, although there was a degradation of heat release rate for the GB20 at the 1400-bar fuel injection rate due to retarded in-cylinder... Transformerless Multilevel Voltage-Source Inverter Topology Comparative Study for PV Systems
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cascaded inverter, DC/AC converter, flying capacitor inverter, multilevel inverter, neutral point clamped inverter, PV systems, renewable energy systems, voltage-source
At present, renewable energies represent 25% of the global power generation capacity. The increase in clean energy facilities is mainly due to the high levels of pollution generated by the burning of fossil fuels to satisfy the growing electricity demand. The global capacity of generating electricity from solar energy has experienced a significant increase, reaching 505 GW in 2018. Today, multilevel inverters are used in PV systems to convert direct current into alternating current. However, the use of multilevel inverters in renewable energies applications presents different challenges; for example, grid-connected systems use a transformer to avoid the presence of leakage currents. The grid-connected systems must meet at least two international standards analyzed in this work: VDE 0126-1-1 and VDE-AR-N 4105, which establish a maximum leakage current of 300 mA and harmonic distortion maximum of 5%. Previously, DC/AC converters have been studied in different industrial applications. The... [more]
