The Complexity of Lignin Thermal Degradation in the Isothermal Context
Jorge López-Beceiro, Ana María Díaz-Díaz, Ana Álvarez-García, Javier Tarrío-Saavedra, Salvador Naya, Ramón Artiaga.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: complex, degradation, isothermal, lignin, pyrolysis, thermogravimetry.
Thermal degradation of lignin in nitrogen atmosphere is evaluated by linear heating and isothermal tests. While linear heating suggests that thermal decomposition in the 200−400 °C range mainly consists of a single step, a careful analysis of isothermal tests points to different lignin fractions having different stabilities. This is an important point for practical predictions, since kinetics obtained as if the degradations at different temperatures were the same would lack practical utility. Instead, stairway type tests are proposed to evaluate the degradation rates and sample quantities involved at the temperatures of interest.
The Economic and Geographical Aspects of the Status of Small-Scale Photovoltaic Systems in Hungary—A Case Study
Gábor Pintér, Henrik Zsiborács, Nóra Hegedűsné Baranyai, András Vincze, Zoltán Birkner.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: feed-in-tariff, Hungary, photovoltaic system, renewable energy regulation, small scale power plant, solar energy.
The use of solar energy is an obvious choice; the energy of the sun is not only indispensable for most processes in nature but it is also a clean, abundant, sustainable, and—most importantly—universally available resource. Although the further spread of photovoltaic systems, which make use of this source of energy, is expected in the future all around the world, no comprehensive investigation has been conducted into the current situation of the small-scale photovoltaic power plants in Hungary, where this type of photovoltaic system is the most popular. By means of a case study, whose novelty lies in its focus on small-scale power plants and their complex examination, including economic and geographic indicators, this paper analyzes their status in Hungary. The study endeavors to establish the reasons for the popularity of this type of power plant and to identify some typical geographical locations with well-illustrated photovoltaic density. Residential, as well as business prosumers, w... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: converters, energy storage system, hierarchical control, microgrid, Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
This research work puts forward a hybrid AC/DC microgrid with renewable energy sources pertaining to consumer’s residential area for meeting the demand. Currently, the power generation and consumption have experienced key transformations. One such tendency would be integration of microgrids into the distribution network that is characterized by high penetration of renewable energy resources as well as operations in parallel. Traditional droop control can be employed in order to get an accurate steady state averaged active power sharing amongst parallel inverters pertaining to hybrid AC/DC microgrid. It is presumed that there would be similar transient average power responses, and there would be no circulating current flowing between the units for identical inverters possessing the same droop gain. However, the instantaneous power could be affected by different line impedances considerably and thus resulting in variation in circulating power that flows amongst inverters, especially duri... Sofie Marton, Elin Svensson, Simon Harvey.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat integration, interviews, oil refinery, operability, retrofit.
In many energy-intensive industrial process plants, significant improvements in energy efficiency can be achieved through increased heat recovery. However, retrofitting plants for heat integration purposes can affect process operability. The aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive overview of such issues by systematically relating different types of heat recovery retrofit measures to a range of technical barriers associated with process operability and practical implementation of the measures. The paper presents a new approach for this kind of study, which can be applied in the early-stage screening of heat integration retrofit measures. This approach accounts for the importance of a number of selected operability factors and their relative significance. The work was conducted in the form of a case study at a large oil refinery. Several conceptual heat exchanger network retrofit design proposals were prepared and discussed during semi-structured interviews with technical staff... [more]
Trace Element Supplementation and Enzyme Addition to Enhance Biogas Production by Anaerobic Digestion of Chicken Litter
Navodita Bhatnagar, David Ryan, Richard Murphy, Anne-Marie Enright.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, biodegradability, chicken litter, enzyme cocktail, specific methane yield, trace elements.
Anaerobic digestion (AD) of chicken litter (CL) is a viable alternative to disposal. However, methane yields from this primarily organic waste are quite low when mono-digested. This paper discusses the effect of an enzyme cocktail, trace element (TE) supplementation and selenium (Se) addition in small-scale batch biomethane potential (BMP) assays to enhance the AD of CL. Eleven different assays were set up in triplicate including assays containing only inoculum (blank), only CL (negative control) and cellulose and inoculum (positive control). The results indicate that both enzyme treatment and trace element supplementation enhanced the biogas and methane yield. The highest specific biogas and methane yields were noted for 1% enzyme-treated CL of 835.2 L/kg volatile solids (VS) and 460.8 L/kg VS, respectively. Usually, mono-digestion of CL is low due to high nitrogen content and the presence of recalcitrant lignocellulosic material from the bedding material. Enzyme treatment performed b... [more]
Output Control of Three-Axis PMSG Wind Turbine Considering Torsional Vibration Using H Infinity Control
Kosuke Takahashi, Nyam Jargalsaikhan, Shriram Rangarajan, Ashraf Mohamed Hemeida, Hiroshi Takahashi, Tomonobu Senjyu.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: H infinity output control, PMSG, wind turbine.
Due to changes in wind, the torque obtained from the wind turbine always fluctuates. Here, the wind turbine and the rotor of the generator are connected by a shaft that is one elastic body, and each rotating body has different inertia. The difference in inertia between the wind turbine and the generator causes a torsion between the wind generator and the generator; metal fatigue and torsion can damage the shaft. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the axial torsional vibration suppression of a geared wind power generator using a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). In addition, errors in axis system parameters occur due to long-term operation of the generator, and it is important to estimate for accurate control. In this paper, we propose torque estimation using H ∞ observer and axial torsional vibration suppression control in a three inertia system. The H ∞ controller is introduced into the armature current control system (q-axis current control system) of... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: logistic regression model, park &amp, parking, parking peak hour factor, ride, ride systems, road traffic engineering, road transport, the use of park &amp.
The park and ride (P&R) parking type is usually located near peripheral public transport stops. These parking places are dedicated to people who, after leaving their vehicle in the parking, continue their journey to the city center using some form of public transport such as bus, metro, rail or tram systems. This article aims to examine the features associated with P&R parking locations in use in Cracow (Poland). The analysis included the number of entries and exits to and from parking during particular periods of the day, week and year, parking time of vehicles, and parking space use. A parking peak hour factor was also calculated, which expresses the crowding degree of vehicle entries/exits in/out parking during a particular period. In addition, the paper presents an analysis of factors determining users to P&R parking use. In the modeling process, logit models were used, which, as stated after analyzing the literature on the subject, were already used in various countries around the... [more]

Feiyu Tian, Deliang Xu, Xinwu Xu.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biofuel, oriented strandboard (OSB), rice straw.
Disposal of vast agricultural residues has been a nerve-wracking social problem in many agriculture-intensive regions. Open-field combustion both squanders those biomass resources and causes severe atmospheric pollution and hazards. In addition, wood industries yield residues such as sanding powders without value application. Production of biofuels out of these biomass provides a multiple beneficial solution. To that end, this work focused on fabrication of biomass fuels using rice straws (Calorific value: 14.7 MJ/Kg) and wood residues from OSB industries (Calorific value: 17.3 MJ/Kg). Biofuel sticks from various proportions of biomass residues were made using an 18.5 KW industrial biomass extruder without adding bonding agents, achieving densities of 1.0−1.6 g/cm3 and comparative calorific values. The biofuel sticks exhibit moisture sensitivity when subjected to a ten-day conditioning. Release of residual stresses that were created during the densification process led to structural de... A Study on the Influence of Lithium Plating on Battery Degradation
Upender Rao Koleti, Ashwin Rajan, Chaou Tan, Sanghamitra Moharana, Truong Quang Dinh, James Marco.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery management system, fast charging, lithium plating, lithium-ion, voltage relaxation profile.
Within Li-ion batteries, lithium plating is considered as one of the main reasons behind the capacity fade that occurs during low temperature and fast charging conditions. Previous studies indicate that plating is influenced by the levels of loss of lithium inventory (LLI) and the loss of active material (LAM) present in a battery. However, it is not clear from the literature on how lithium plating influences battery degradation in terms of LAM and LLI. Quantifying the undesirable impacts of lithium plating can help in understanding its impact on battery degradation and feedback effects of previous lithium plating on the formation of present plating. This study aims to quantify the degradation modes of lithium plating: LLI, LAM at the electrode level. A commercial Li-ion cell was first, aged using two different cases: with and without lithium plating. Second, a degradation diagnostic method is developed to quantify the degradation modes based on their measurable effects on open-circuit... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flexibility evaluation indices, flexible resources, high-penetration renewable energy, interruptible load, optimal dispatch.
The volatility and uncertainty of high-penetration renewable energy (RE) challenge the stability of the power system. To tackle this challenge, an optimal dispatch of high-penetration RE based on flexible resources (FRs) is proposed to enhance the ability of the power system to cope with uncertain disturbances. Firstly, the flexibility of a high-penetration RE integrated power system is analyzed. The flexibility margin of power supply and flexible adaptability of RE are then introduced as the evaluation indices for optimal operation. Finally, a multi-objective optimal dispatch model for power system flexibility enhancement based on FRs under the constraint of flexibility indices is proposed. The simulation results show that the proposed optimal dispatch can effectively enhance the flexibility of the power system and the penetration of RE and reduce pollutant emissions. Compared with the conventional method, the daily average emissions of CO2, SO2, and NOx with the proposed method are r... [more]

Diana D’Agostino, Luigi Mele, Francesco Minichiello, Carlo Renno.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic simulation, ground source heat pump, HVAC system, NZEB, photovoltaic panels, renewable energy sources.
Currently, ground source heat pump (GSHP) technology is being studied, as the use of the ground as a source of renewable energy allows significant energy savings to be obtained. Therefore, it is useful to quantify how these savings help to achieve the energy balance of a Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) compared to an air source heat pump or a condensing boiler coupled to a chiller. This paper assesses how these savings affect the number of photovoltaic panels installed on the roof of a building to obtain the NZEB target. The study is conducted by dynamic simulation for a building used as a bed and breakfast, virtually placed in two Italian towns. The energy savings and reduction of CO2 emissions, the percentage of renewable energy used, and the photovoltaic surface needed are assessed. Finally, the discounted payback period is calculated. The results show that the GSHP, unlike the systems to which it is compared, allows an NZEB to be obtained by balancing yearly energy consumption with... [more]

Keywords: biodiesel power generator (BDPG), butterfly optimization technique (BOA), frequency regulation, isolated hybrid microgrid system (IHμGS), microgrid energy management, solar tower (ST).
A renewable and distributed generation (DG)-enabled modern electrified power network with/without energy storage (ES) helps the progress of microgrid development. Frequency regulation is a significant scheme to improve the dynamic response quality of the microgrid under unknown disturbances. This paper established a maiden load frequency regulation of a wind-driven generator (WG), solar tower (ST), bio-diesel power generator (BDPG) and thermostatically controllable load (heat pump and refrigerator)-based, isolated, single-area microgrid system. Hence, intelligent control strategies are important for this issue. A newly developed butterfly algorithmic technique (BOA) is leveraged to tune the controllers’ parameters. However, to attain a proper balance between net power generation and load power, a dual stage proportional-integral- one plus integral-derivative PI − (1 + ID) controller is developed. Comparative system responses (in MATLAB/SIMULINK software) for different scenarios under s... [more]
Efficient Production of Clean Power and Hydrogen Through Synergistic Integration of Chemical Looping Combustion and Reforming
Mohammed N. Khan, Schalk Cloete, Shahriar Amini.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide Capture, chemical looping combustion, energy penalty, Hydrogen, natural gas combined cycle, power plant.
Chemical looping combustion (CLC) technology generates power while capturing CO2 inherently with no direct energy penalty. However, previous studies have shown significant energy penalties due to low turbine inlet temperature (TIT) relative to a standard natural gas combined cycle plant. The low TIT is limited by the oxygen carrier material used in the CLC process. Therefore, in the current study, an additional combustor is included downstream of the CLC air reactor to raise the TIT. The efficient production of clean hydrogen for firing the added combustor is key to the success of this strategy. Therefore, the highly efficient membrane-assisted chemical looping reforming (MA-CLR) technology was selected. Five different integrations between CLC and MA-CLR were investigated, capitalizing on the steam in the CLC fuel reactor outlet stream to achieve highly efficient reforming in MA-CLR. This integration reduced the energy penalty as low as 3.6%-points for power production only (case 2) an... [more]

Keywords: fast frequency response (FFR), fault ride-through (FRT), frequency stability, power-electronic converter (PEC), reactive power, renewable energy sources (RES), short-circuit strength, solar-photovoltaic (PV), synchronous inertia, voltage stability, wind generation.
The energy sector is currently undergoing a rapid transformation with the integration of power electronic converter (PEC)-interfaced renewable energy sources (RES), such as wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, at both the transmission and distribution networks. Power system stability has been significantly influenced by this power grid transformation. This paper comprehensively reviews major power system stability issues affected due to large-scale integration of PEC-interfaced RES in power grids, with some example case studies relevant for each stability category. According to the review, stability issues are mainly originating from reduction in synchronous inertia, reduction in reactive power reserve, low short-circuit strength of the power network, and fault ride-through (FRT) strategy/capability of the PEC-interfaced RES. Decrease in synchronous inertia could affect both the rotor angle stability and the frequency stability, while decrease in short-circuit strength and reactiv... [more]

Fabio Bignucolo, Manuele Bertoluzzo.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ancillary services, battery energy storage system, hybrid AC/DC house, smart house, solid state transformer.
The ongoing diffusion of solid-state DC/DC converters makes possible a partial migration of electric power systems from the present AC paradigm to a future DC scenario. In addition, the power demand in the domestic environment is expected to grow considerably, for example, due to the progressive diffusion of electric vehicles, induction cooking and heat pumps. To face this evolution, the paper introduces a novel electric topology for a hybrid AC/DC smart house, based on the solid-state transformer technology. The electric scheme, voltage levels and converters types are thoroughly discussed to better integrate the spread of electric appliances, which are frequently based on internal DC buses, within the present AC distribution networks. Voltage levels are determined to guarantee high safety zones with negligible electric risk in the most exposed areas of the house. At the same time, the developed control schemes assure high power quality (voltage stability in the case of both load varia... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: burning velocity, combustion bomb, iso-octane, n-heptane, surrogate fuels, Toluene.
In this work are presented experimental values of the burning velocity of iso-octane/air, n-heptane/air and n-heptane/toluene/air mixtures, gasoline surrogates valid over a range of pressures and temperatures similar to those obtained in internal combustion engines. The present work is based on a method to determine the burning velocities of liquid fuels in a spherical constant volume combustion bomb, in which the initial conditions of pressure, temperature and fuel/air equivalence ratios can be accurately established. A two-zone thermodynamic diagnostic model was used to analyze the combustion pressure trace and calculate thermodynamic variables that cannot be directly measured: the burning velocity and mass burning rate. This experimental facility has been used and validated before for the determination of the burning velocity of gaseous fuels and it is validated in this work for liquid fuels. The values obtained for the burning velocity are expressed as power laws of the pressure, t... [more]

Kaan Ozgun.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ecological infrastructures, integrated assessment for public space, renewable electricity distribution for public space, sustainability assessment model, tripartite altruism, urban renewable energy.
As cities develop new interventions for climate change mitigation, incorporating renewable energy in urban public spaces becomes a common norm to address sustainability objectives. However, current built projects and assessment practices mainly uses a “techno-fixes” approach focusing on strategies that are related to the environmental benefits and neglecting other potential strategies instigating social and economic benefits of renewable energy. The purpose of this study is to present a potential sustainability assessment model introducing new strategies for public space renewable energy use where social and economic benefits of renewables become evident. Supplemented with theories and principles from ecology, the model’s economic strategies refer whether the project considers meaningful part of the produced electricity for generating a local economy; environmental strategy comprises embodied energy, energy storage and self-maintenance; social strategy includes whether the project cons... March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery degradation, electric vehicle, Li-ion, moving horizon window, real-time, smart charging, V2G, vehicle to grid.
This paper proposes a two-stage smart charging algorithm for future buildings equipped with an electric vehicle, battery energy storage, solar panels, and a heat pump. The first stage is a non-linear programming model that optimizes the charging of electric vehicles and battery energy storage based on a prediction of photovoltaïc (PV) power, building demand, electricity, and frequency regulation prices. Additionally, a Li-ion degradation model is used to assess the operational costs of the electric vehicle (EV) and battery. The second stage is a real-time control scheme that controls charging within the optimization time steps. Finally, both stages are incorporated in a moving horizon control framework, which is used to minimize and compensate for forecasting errors. It will be shown that the real-time control scheme has a significant influence on the obtained cost reduction. Furthermore, it will be shown that the degradation of an electric vehicle and battery energy storage system are... [more]

Keywords: device-to-device (D2D) communication, stochastic geometry, successful transmission probability (STP), two-way relay.
The continuous development of fifth generation (5G) communication and Internet of Thing (IoT) inevitably necessitates more advanced systems that can satisfy the growing wireless data rate demand of future equipment. Device-to-Device (D2D) communication, whose performance is evaluated in terms of the overall throughput, energy efficiency (EE) and spectral efficiency (SE), is considered a promising solution for the aforementioned problem. Thereby, this paper aims at improving the performance of the D2D communication underlaying cellular networks operating on multiple bands by maximizing the EE in its uplink. Thanks to the stochastic geometry theory, it is possible to derive the closed-form expressions for the successful transmission probability (STP), the total average transmission rate (TATR), and the total average energy efficiency (TAEE) of cellular and D2D users in different time slot setting. Particularly investigated and compared in this study, there are one-hop, direct, D2D commun... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data communication, DC-distributed power system, power/signal dual modulation, switched reluctance motor.
A DC-distributed power system consists of a large quantity of subsystems with power converters. The interaction among these subsystems will affect the operation performance of the whole system. Therefore, data communication plays a very important role in system control and equipment monitoring. The present study proposes a dual modulation method of power/signal based on Switched Reluctance Drive (SRD), which can transmit signals simultaneously with power conversion and can promise data communication of the system with lower cost. This proposed method uses the ripple inherent as the carrier of the signal in the power circuit and adopts Pulse width modulation (PWM)/frequency shift keying (FSK) composite modulation to realize the reverse transmission of signals from the load to the power supply. Results of simulations and experiments indicate that this new method is effective in data communication.

Danqing Liu, Yilian Li, Ramesh Agarwal.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CO2 geological storage, injection schemes, phase transformation, pressure perturbation, shale.
As a new “sink” of CO2 permanent storage, the depleted shale reservoir is very promising compared to the deep saline aquifer. To provide a greater understanding of the benefits of CO2 storage in a shale reservoir, a comparative study is conducted by establishing the full-mechanism model, including the hydrodynamic trapping, adsorption trapping, residual trapping, solubility trapping as well as the mineral trapping corresponding to the typical shale and deep saline aquifer parameters from the Ordos basin in China. The results show that CO2 storage in the depleted shale reservoir has merits in storage safety by trapping more CO2 in stable immobile phase due to adsorption and having gentler and ephemeral pressure perturbation responding to CO2 injection. The effect of various CO2 injection schemes, namely the high-speed continuous injection, low-speed continuous injection, huff-n-puff injection and water alternative injection, on the phase transformation of CO2 in a shale reservoir and CO... Keywords: Biomass, biomass conversion technologies, coal phase-out, cost, GHG emissions, RED II, stranded assets, SWOT analysis, the European Green Deal.
Biomass has been demonstrated as a capable source of energy to fulfill the increasing demand for clean energy sources which could last a long time. Replacing fossil fuels with biomass-based ones can potentially lead to a reduction of carbon emissions, which is the main target of the EU climate strategy. Based on RED II (revised Renewable Energy Directive 2018/2001/EU) and the European Green Deal, biomass is a promising energy source for achieving carbon neutrality in the future. However, the sustainable potential of biomass resources in the forthcoming decades is still a matter of question. This review aims at estimating the availability of biomass for energy reasons in the EU, and to evaluate its potential to meet the coal power plant capacity of the main lignite-producer countries, including Germany, Poland and Greece. Plants in line with the sustainability criteria of RED II have been selected for the preliminary estimations concerning their full conversion to the biomass power conc... [more]
