Cost and Energy Reduction of a New nZEB Wooden Building
Endrik Arumägi, Targo Kalamees.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cost of energy performance, cost reduction, nZEB, wooden building.
The current study demonstrates the possibilities of reducing energy use and construction costs and provides evidence that wooden nearly-zero-energy buildings (nZEB) are technically possible at affordable construction costs by using novel design processes and procurement models that enable scalable and modular production. The energy efficiency solutions were derived by increasing/decreasing the insulation value of the building envelope in successive steps. Financial calculations were based on the investment needed to achieve the nearly-zero-energy levels. Overall, many opportunities exist to decrease the cost and energy use compared to the current (pre-nZEB) practice because the net present value can change up to 150 €/m² on the same energy performance indicator (EPI) level. The EPI in the cost-even range was reached by combining a ground-source heat pump (between 115 and 128 kWh/(m2·a)) and efficient district heating (between 106 and 124 kWh/(m2·a)). As energy efficiency decreases, imp... [more]

Linan Qu, Shujie Zhang, Hsiung-Cheng Lin, Ning Chen, Lingling Li.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid-connected, K-means++ clustering, optimal economic operation, reactive power configuration, renewable energy generation.
The large-scale renewable energy power plants connected to a weak grid may cause bus voltage fluctuations in the renewable energy power plant and even power grid. Therefore, reactive power compensation is demanded to stabilize the bus voltage and reduce network loss. For this purpose, time-series characteristics of renewable energy power plants are firstly reflected using K-means++ clustering method. The time group behaviors of renewable energy power plants, spatial behaviors of renewable energy generation units, and a time-and-space grouping model of renewable energy power plants are thus established. Then, a mixed-integer optimization method for reactive power compensation in renewable energy power plants is developed based on the second-order cone programming (SOCP). Accordingly, power flow constraints can be simplified to achieve reactive power optimization more efficiently and quickly. Finally, the feasibility and economy for the proposed method are verified by actual renewable en... [more]
Highly Renewable District Heat for Espoo Utilizing Waste Heat Sources
Pauli Hiltunen, Sanna Syri.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data center, decarbonization transition, energy system modeling, heat pump, open district heating network, Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
The district heating operator Fortum and the city of Espoo have set a goal to abandon the use of coal in district heating production and increase the share of renewable sources to 95% by the year 2029. Among renewable fuels and heat pumps, waste heat utilization has an important role in Fortum’s plans for the decarbonization of district heating production, and Fortum is considering the possibility of utilizing waste heat from a large data center in its district heating network. The goal of this paper is to investigate the feasibility and required amount of waste heat to achieve this goal. Two different operation strategies are introduced—an operation strategy based on marginal costs and an operation strategy prioritizing waste heat utilization. Each strategy is modeled with three different electricity price scenarios. Because the low temperature waste heat from a data center must be primed by heat pumps, the electricity price has a significant impact on the feasibility of waste heat ut... [more]
Arc-Phase Spark Plug Energy Deposition Characteristics Measured Using a Spark Plug Calorimeter Based on Differential Pressure Measurement
Kyeongmin Kim, Matthew J. Hall, Preston S. Wilson, Ronald D. Matthews.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: calorimeter, natural gas engine, spark ignition, spark plug, thermal energy.
A spark plug calorimeter is introduced for quantifying the thermal energy delivered to unreactive gas surrounding the spark gap during spark ignition. Unlike other calorimeters, which measure the small pressure rise of the gas above the relatively high gauge pressure or relative to an internal reference, the present calorimeter measured the differential rise in pressure relative to the initial pressure in the calorimeter chamber. By using a large portion of the dynamic range of the chip-based pressure sensor, a high signal to noise ratio is possible; this can be advantageous, particularly for high initial pressures. Using this calorimeter, a parametric study was carried out, measuring the thermal energy deposition in the gas and the electrical-to-thermal energy conversion efficiency over a larger range of initial pressures than has been carried out previously (1−24 bar absolute at 298 K). The spark plug and inductive ignition circuit used gave arc-type rather than glow-type discharges.... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data envelopment analysis, Energy Efficiency, future research, literature review.
The importance and urgency of energy efficiency in sustainable development are increasing. Accurate assessment of energy efficiency is of considerable significance and necessity. The data envelopment analysis (DEA) method has been widely used to study energy efficiency as a total factor efficiency assessment method. In order to summarize the latest research on DEA in the field of energy efficiency, this article first analyzes the overall situation of related literature published in 2011−2019. Subsequently, the definition, measurement and evaluation variables of energy efficiency are introduced. After that, this article reviews the current DEA model and its extension models and applications based on different scenarios. Finally, considering the shortcomings of the existing DEA model, possible future research topics are proposed.

Milad Mahmoodzadeh, Voytek Gretka, Stephen Wong, Thomas Froese, Phalguni Mukhopadhyaya.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air leakage area, infrared thermography, pressure differences, qualitative analysis, quantitative analysis.
The next-generation performance-based building energy codes are focusing on minimizing building envelope air leakage. The quantification of air leakage in buildings is typically performed with a blower door test. However, this test does not provide information about the locations of air leakage. The aim of this study is to demonstrate a method involving qualitative and quantitative components that can be used to characterize locations of air leakage with infrared thermography. Since air leakage can have a significant impact on building energy consumption in cold climates, like in Canada, this approach can quickly inform where air barrier discontinuities occurred during construction or where to selectively target air sealing efforts in existing buildings. The observations from this study are presented, based on a thermographic image analysis during a depressurized blower door test at various pressures, in an attempt to quantify the relative rates of air leakage. The results from the inv... [more]

Sean M. Watson, Gioia Falcone, Rob Westaway.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: geothermal energy, repurposing hydrocarbon wells, UK resource assessment.
One potential opportunity for the decarbonisation of heat supply in the UK is the repurposing of onshore hydrocarbon wells for the production and/or storage of geothermal heat. This paper reports an investigation into the most favourable candidate sites for such repurposing, taking into consideration the available thermal energy outputs and technological options for heat use. A GIS mapping model was generated, combining public domain data on onshore wells and production data from onshore fields, provided by the UK Oil and Gas Authority, with available subsurface temperature data. This model has thus integrated information on location, depth, operational status, and bottom-hole temperature for onshore hydrocarbon wells with production rates from onshore fields in the UK. Of the 2242 onshore hydrocarbon wells thus reported, 560 have the potential to be repurposed, 292 of which are currently operating. Using aggregated water production data for all operating wells in each field, the field... [more]

Keywords: battery pack, calibration optimization, electric vehicle, electrochemical-thermal modeling, lithium-ion battery.
Large-scale introduction of electric vehicles (EVs) to the market sets outstanding requirements for battery performance to extend vehicle driving range, prolong battery service life, and reduce battery costs. There is a growing need to accurately and robustly model the performance of both individual cells and their aggregated behavior when integrated into battery packs. This paper presents a novel methodology for Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery pack simulations under actual operating conditions of an electric mining vehicle. The validated electrochemical-thermal models of Li-ion battery cells are scaled up into battery modules to emulate cell-to-cell variations within the battery pack while considering the random variability of battery cells, as well as electrical topology and thermal management of the pack. The performance of the battery pack model is evaluated using transient experimental data for the pack operating conditions within the mining environment. The simulation results show t... [more]

Keywords: assembly pressure, dual hybrid microporous and gas diffusion layers with wettability distribution, low-temperature start, operation time, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell.
The low-temperature start problem of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) is a factor limiting their large-scale application. To improve the low-temperature start performance of a PEMFC, a novel microporous layer (MPL) and a gas diffusion layer (GDL) with planar wettability distribution, in which the hydrophilic and hydrophobic lines were arranged alternately in the in-plane direction, were investigated in this study. The influence of the dual planar-distributed wettability of the MPL and GDL on the normal temperature and low-temperature start performance of the PEMFC was investigated. Before performing the major experiment, the effect of the assembly pressure of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which has a significant effect on the PEMFC performance, was examined and determined to use in the experiment. The experimental results show that the dual hybrid MPL and GDL can further prolong the operation time of the PEMFC at different below-freezing temperatures owing to e... [more]

Keywords: fault recognition, power system fault, solar photovoltaic energy, Stockwell transform, Wigner distribution function.
Penetration level of solar photovoltaic (PV) energy in the utility network is steadily increasing. This changes the fault level and causes protection problems. Furthermore, multi-tapped structure of distribution network deployed to integrate solar PV energy to the grid and supplying loads at the same time also raised the protection challenges. Hence, this manuscript is aimed at introducing an algorithm to identify and classify the faults incident on the network of utilities where penetration level of the solar PV energy is high. This fault recognition algorithm is implemented in four steps: (1) calculation of Stockwell transform-based fault index (STFI) (2) calculation of Wigner distribution function-based fault index (WDFI) (3) calculation of combined fault index (CFI) by multiplying STFI and WDFI (4) calculation of index for ground fault (IGF) used to recognize the involvement of ground in a fault event. The STFI has the merits that its performance is least affected by the noise asso... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coupled dynamics analysis, design optimization, offshore wind turbine, Renewable and Sustainable Energy.
The increased interest in renewable wind energy has stimulated many offshore wind turbine concepts. This paper presents a design optimization and a coupled dynamics analysis of a platform with a single tether anchored to the seabed supported for a 5 MW baseline wind turbine. The design is based on a concept named SWAY. We conduct a parametric optimization process that accounts for important design considerations in the static and dynamic view, such as the stability, natural frequency, performance requirements, and cost feasibility. Through these optimization processes, we obtain and present the optimized model. We then establish the fully coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic model by the time-domain simulation tool FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) with the hydrodynamic coefficients from an indoor program HydroGen. We conduct extensive time-domain simulations with various wind and wave conditions to explore the effects of wind speed and wave significant height on the... [more]

Keywords: ASEAN, electricity liberalisation, electricity unbundling, Energy Efficiency, energy security, energy sustainability, regional electricity market.
Malaysia is in the process of liberalising its electricity supply industry (ESI) further, with the second reform series announced in September 2018. If everything goes as planned, Malaysia would be the third country in the Association of Southeast Asia Nations (ASEAN) to have a fully liberalised ESI after the Philippines and Singapore. A number of initiatives have been in the pipeline to be executed and a lot more will be planned. At this juncture, it is important for Malaysia to look for the best practices and lessons that can be learnt from the experience of other countries that have successfully liberalised their ESIs. Being in the same region, it is believed that there is a lot that Malaysia can learn from the Philippines and Singapore. This paper therefore presents and deliberates on the chronological development of the countries’ progressive journeys in liberalising their ESIs. The aim is to discern the good practices, the challenges as well as the lessons learnt from these trans... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biomass, hard carbon, sodium-ion batteries, valorization.
Biomass is gaining increased attention as a sustainable and low-cost hard carbon (HC) precursor. However, biomass properties are often unexplored and unrelated to HC performance. Herein, we used pine, beechwood, miscanthus, and wheat straw precursors to synthesize HCs at 1000 °C, 1200 °C and 1400 °C by a two-steps pyrolysis treatment. The final physicochemical and electrochemical properties of the HC evidenced dissimilar trends, mainly influenced by the precursor’s inorganic content, and less by the thermal treatment. Pine and beechwood HCs delivered the highest reversible capacity and coulombic efficiency (CE) at 1400 °C of about 300 mAh·g−1 and 80%, respectively. This performance can be attributed to the structure derived from the high carbon purity precursors. Miscanthus and wheat straw HC performance was strongly affected by the silicon, potassium, and calcium content in the biomasses, which promoted simultaneous detrimental phenomena of intrinsic activation, formation of a silicon... Keywords: Energy Storage, numerical modeling, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, underground pumped storage hydropower, water transients.
The intermittent nature of most renewable energy sources requires their coupling with an energy storage system, with pumped storage hydropower (PSH) being one popular option. However, PSH cannot always be constructed due to topographic, environmental, and societal constraints, among others. Underground pumped storage hydropower (UPSH) has recently gained popularity as a viable alternative and may utilize abandoned mines for the construction of the lower reservoir in the underground. Such underground mines may have complex geometries and the injection/pumping of large volumes of water with high discharge could lead to uneven water level distribution over the underground reservoir subparts. This can temporarily influence the head difference between the upper and lower reservoirs of the UPSH, thus affecting the efficiency of the plant or inducing structural stability problems. The present study considers an abandoned slate mine in Martelange in Southeast Belgium as the lower, underground,... [more]

Keywords: design methodology, fuel cell/battery, hybrid power source, optimal sizing, reliability assessment.
This paper addresses the issue of optimal sizing reliability applied to a fuel cell/battery hybrid system. This specific problem raises the global problem of strong coupling between hardware and control parameters. To tackle this matter, the proposed methodology uses nested optimization loops. Furthermore, to increase the optimal design relevance, a reliability assessment of the optimal sizing set is introduced. This new paradigm enables showing the early impact of the reliability criteria on design choices regarding energetic performance index. It leads to a smart design methodology permitting to avoid complexity and save computing time. It considerably helps design engineers set up the best hybridization rate and enables practicing tradeoffs, including reliability aspects in the early design stages.

Multiple injection strategies have increased their capabilities along with the evolution of injection system technologies up to the point that nowadays it is possible to inject eight different pulses, permitting to improve the engine performance, and consequently, emissions. The present work was realized for two simplified strategies: a pilot-main and a main-post, in order to analyze the influence of an auxiliary pulse on the main and otherwise, in reactive conditions for two pilot/post quantities and four hydraulic dwell times. The study was carried out by employing two optical techniques: diffused back-illumination with flame bandpass chemiluminescence for measuring soot, represented by soot-maps distribution, and single-pass schlieren for ignition delay (ID). Furthermore, a novel methodology for decoupling the start of combustion (SOC) of the second pulse was developed and successfully validated. From the ignition delay results, it was found for all test points that the pilot inject... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: eutectic alloys, forging, hydrogen storage, metal hydrides, Mg-Ni, severe plastic deformation.
Fast forging of compacts made up of Mg and Ni powders is shown to be an effective method to induce severe plastic deformation with improved H2 sorption properties. Here, using such processed samples, a comprehensive analysis of the sorption properties reveals that the first hydrogenation sequence significantly depends on the forging temperature, through different microstructures. More in detail, no phase transformation occurs upon cold forging, while solid-state reaction leads to the formation of the Mg2Ni intermetallic compound upon forging above 400 °C. Forging below the brittle-to-ductile transition (225−250 °C) leads to faster H2 uptake upon first absorption owing to a more textured fiber along the c-axis and internal strains which promote hydrogen diffusion through the bulk material. Desorption kinetics remain slower with low-temperature forging, despite Ni recombining to form Mg2Ni during the first desorption. After several cycles, a two-step behavior is observed with a fast abso... [more]

Keywords: crow search algorithm, energy management, grey wolf optimizer, microgrid, renewable energy sources, sine cosine algorithm.
Optimal scheduling of distributed energy resources (DERs) of a low-voltage utility-connected microgrid system is studied in this paper. DERs include both dispatchable fossil-fueled generators and non-dispatchable renewable energy resources. Various real constraints associated with adjustable loads, charging/discharging limitations of battery, and the start-up/shut-down time of the dispatchable DERs are considered during the scheduling process. Adjustable loads are assumed to the residential loads which either operates throughout the day or for a particular period during the day. The impact of these loads on the generation cost of the microgrid system is studied. A novel hybrid approach considers the grey wolf optimizer (GWO), sine cosine algorithm (SCA), and crow search algorithm (CSA) to minimize the overall generation cost of the microgrid system. It has been found that the generation costs rise 50% when the residential loads were included along with the fixed loads. Active participa... [more]

Keywords: convective heat transfer, gravity effect, numerical study, supercritical CO2, vertical flow.
The effects of gravity on the heat transfer performance of supercritical CO2 flowing within a vertical tube with a diameter of 4.75 mm are numerically studied in this paper. The main objectives are to comprehensively investigate the action of gravity and buoyancy on the supercritical heat transfer. An effective numerical method, which employs a modified Shear Stress Transfer k-ω model (SST k-ω), is applied at various gravity conditions. It is found that, for both upward and downward flows, the heat transfer of supercritical CO2 is improved with increased gravity magnitude. The effect of gravity on heat transfer are more pronounced under a low mass flux condition than that under a high mass flux condition and it is closely related to the variations of thermal properties. For the upward flow, the increased gravity magnitude accelerates the near wall fluid and creates a classic “M-shaped” radial velocity distribution. For the downward flow, the increased gravity magnitude decelerates the... [more]
Improving Fuel Economy and Engine Performance through Gasoline Fuel Octane Rating
José Rodríguez-Fernández, Ángel Ramos, Javier Barba, Dolores Cárdenas, Jesús Delgado.
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuel economy, knock sensor, knocking, octane number, performance, spark-ignition, vehicle acceleration.
The octane number is a measure of the resistance of gasoline fuels to auto-ignition. Therefore, high octane numbers reduce the engine knocking risk, leading to higher compression threshold and, consequently, higher engine efficiencies. This allows higher compression ratios to be considered during the engine design stage. Current spark-ignited (SI) engines use knock sensors to protect the engine from knocking, usually adapting the operation parameters (boost pressure, spark timing, lambda). Moreover, some engines can move the settings towards optimized parameters if knock is not detected, leading to higher performance and fuel economy. In this work, three gasolines with different octane ratings (95, 98 and 100 RON (research octane number)) were fueled in a high-performance vehicle. Tests were performed in a chassis dyno at controlled ambient conditions, including a driving sequence composed of full-load accelerations and two steady-state modes. Vehicle power significantly increased with... [more]

Keywords: high-speed cinematography, interactive effects, kerosene droplets, microexplosion, sub-atmospheric pressure.
To improve our understanding of the interactive effects in combustion of binary multicomponent fuel droplets at sub-atmospheric pressure, combustion experiments were conducted on two fibre-supported RP-3 kerosene droplets at pressures from 0.2 to 1.0 bar. The burning life of the interactive droplets was recorded by a high-speed camera and a mirrorless camera. The results showed that the flame propagation time from burning droplet to unburned droplet was proportional to the normalised spacing distance between droplets and the ambient pressure. Meanwhile, the maximum normalised spacing distance from which the left droplet can be ignited has been investigated under different ambient pressure. The burning rate was evaluated and found to have the same trend as the single droplet combustion, which decreased with the reduction in the pressure. For every experiment, the interactive coefficient was less than one owing to the oxygen competition, except for the experiment at L/D0 = 2.5 and P = 1.... [more]

Keywords: activated carbon (AC), carbonization, CO2 adsorption capacity, pyridinium-based ionic liquid, rubber seed shell (RSS).
In this study, rubber seed shell was used for the production of activated carbon by chemical activation using an ionic liquid, [C4Py][Tf2N] as an activating agent. Sample RSS-IL 800 shows the highest specific surface area of 393.99 m2/g, a total pore volume of 0.206 cm3/g, and a micropore volume of 0.172 cm3/g. The performance of AC samples as an adsorbent for CO2 was also studied using a static volumetric technique evaluated at a temperature of 25 °C and 1 bar pressure. The CO2 adsorption capacity for sample RSS-IL 800 was 2.436 mmol/g, comparable with reported data from the previous study. Results also show that the CO2 adsorption capacity decreased at a higher temperature between 50 and 100 °C and increased at elevated pressure due to its exothermic behavior. The Langmuir model fits the adsorption data well, and the isosteric heat of adsorption proved that the physisorption process and exothermic behavior occur.
