April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: low voltage ride through, permanent magnet synchronous generator, small-signal model, wind turbine
In recent years, due to the several advantages of permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), the number of wind farms utilizing this technology has been significantly grown. The determination of the failure mechanism in these devices is the major challenge which has been addressed in many studies. Particularly, response to grid code compliance by wind power in the voltage drop situation needs to be comprehensively analyzed. In this paper, a small signal model of a PMSG-based wind turbine for low voltage ride-through (LVRT) and suitable for stability and artificial intelligent studies is presented. Accordingly, the generator side converter controls the dc-link voltage, and the maximum power point tracking is performed by the grid side converter. Given the proposed model, the speed of the simulation for stability analysis studies can be significantly increased by intelligent methods. Furthermore, the simplified approach can be achieved for calculating the optimal coefficients of the... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: climate change, heat exchanger, heat pump, relevance tree, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wastewater treatment plant
In many countries around the world heating (and cooling) has been and will remain the biggest energy sector, but it is still widely dominated by fossil energy sources today. Wastewater as a source of renewable energy contains large amounts of heat and due to its place-bound localization in urban sewer systems it is usually also situated in very close distance to potential heat consumers. However, one has to keep in mind that heat extraction from wastewater might have undesired impacts on temperature-sensitive treatment processes in the related wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). To assess the potential impact of in-sewer heat recovery on inflow temperature, two different approaches are available today: a simple (but less significant) alligation alternate, or very accurate (but less practical) mathematical models. To close the gap between practicability and significance this article introduces a novel approach to pre-assess the suitability of in-sewer heat recovery sites based on little... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3D reconstruction, building envelope, thermal infrared (TIR) image, thermal performance detection, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)
The evaluation and renovation of existing building envelope has important practical significance for energy conservation and emission reduction in the field of architecture. With the development of digital cities, 3D models with rich temperature information can realize the comprehensive and accurate detection and evaluation of the existing building envelope. However, the 3D model reconstructed from thermal infrared images has only relative temperature distribution and no temperature value of each location, so it is impossible to quantify the extent of the defect from it. To solve this issue, this paper develops a method to establish a 3D point cloud model with temperature information at selected points. The proposed 3D model is generated based on the thermal infrared images acquired by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) equipped with an infrared camera. In the generated 3D thermal infrared model, we can not only get the relative temperature distribution of the building’s full envelope st... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical grid, Energy Conversion, fuel cell, green power sources, hydrogen energy, PEMFC, power generation
In this paper, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is implemented as a grid-connected electrical generator that uses hydrogen gas as fuel and air as an oxidant to produce electricity through electrochemical reactions. Analysis demonstrated that the performance of the PEMFC greatly depends on the rate of fuel supply and air supply pressure. Critical fuel and air supply pressures of the PEMFC are analysed to test its feasibility for the grid connection. Air and fuel supply pressures are varied to observe the effects on the PEMFC characteristics, efficiency, fuel supply, and air consumption over time. The PEMFC model is then implemented into an electrical power system with the aid of power electronics applications. Detailed mathematical modelling of the PEMFC is discussed with justification. The PEMFC functions as an electrical generator that is connected to the local grid through a power converter and a transformer. Modulation of the converter is controlled by means of a proport... The Effect of Aggressive Driving on Vehicle Parameters
Emilia M. Szumska, Rafał Jurecki
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aggressive driving, driver behavior, hybrid electric vehicle
Driver behavior is one of the most relevant factors affecting road safety. Many traffic situations require a driver to be able to recognize possible danger. In numerous works, aggressive driving is understood as unsafe and as a hazard entailing the risk of potential crashes. However, traffic safety is not the only thing affected by a vehicle operator’s driving style. A driver’s behavior also impacts the operating costs of a vehicle and the emission of environmental air pollutants. This is confirmed by numerous works devoted to the examination of the effect of driving style on fuel economy and air pollution. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of aggressive driving on fuel consumption and emission of air pollutants. The simulation was carried out based on real velocity profiles collected in real-world tests under urban and motorway driving conditions. The results of simulations confirm that an aggressive driving style causes a significant increase in both fuel c... [more]

Keywords: coal geochemistry, critical elements, Late Carboniferous, Sangshuping coal mine, superhigh organic sulfur coal
Superhigh organic sulfur(SHOS) coals have currently attracted great attention due to their typical depositional environments and formation history as well as their great negative impact on the ecosystem. This study investigated the geochemistry of the No. 11coalof the Late Carboniferous Taiyuan Formation from the Sangshuping coalmine, Hancheng miningarea, Weibei coalfield, Shaanxi, North China. The No. 11 coal is a high-sulfur coal with a large proportion of organic sulfur content (3.7 to 5.5%, avg. 4.4%) and belongs to typical SHOS coal. The high sulfur content in the Sangshuping coal mine has been mainly caused by the combined influences of seawater and hydrothermal fluids. The SHOS in No. 11 coal was formed in the Fe-poor and S-rich high-marine influenced occlusive environment. During the late coalification stage, a high proportion of pyritic sulfur was formed due to sufficient Fe supply from the Fe−S-rich epigenetic hydrothermal fluids. The No. 11 SHOS coal is enriched in Li−Ga−Zr−... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: converters, reactive power control, renewable energy sources, wind energy integration, wind power generation
In recent years, penetration of renewable energy resources into the power grid has increased significantly. Wind, as a renewable, clean, and abundantly available source of energy, has an important share in the energy mix. However, increasing the penetration of wind power in the power grid can adversely affect the power quality and introduce new operational challenges. This paper discusses issues related to the integration of wind farms in the power system, such as maximum power point tracking, fault ride-through capabilities, interarea and subsynchronous oscillations, and voltage flicker, and provides a review of the existing control strategies to address these issues in Types I, II, III, and IV wind turbines. This paper also identifies challenges and opportunities ahead.

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bus aggregation, critical energy infrastructure information, k-means and k-means++ clustering algorithm, Korean power systems, line loss compensation, power system equivalent, power transfer distribution factor, voltage level selection
This paper presents a static network equivalent model for Korean power systems. The proposed equivalent model preserves the overall transmission network characteristics focusing on power flows among areas in Korean power systems. For developing the model, a power transfer distribution factor (PTDF)-based k-means++ algorithm was used to cluster the bus groups in which similar PTDF characteristics were identified. For the reduction process, the bus groups were replaced by a single bus with a generator or load, and an equivalent transmission line was determined to maintain power flows in the original system model. Appropriate voltage levels were selected, and compensation for real power line losses was made for the correct representation. A Korean power system with more than 1600 buses was reduced to a 38-bus system with 13 generators, 25 loads, and 74 transmission lines. The effectiveness of the developed equivalent model was evaluated by performing power flow simulations and comparisons... [more]

Keywords: built-in electricity, compression, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), electrolytic polymerization, magnetic compound fluid (MCF), magnetic field, photoelectricity, piezo-electricity, piezo-resistivity, rubber, tension, TiO2
Rubber involving magnetic compound fluid (MCF) and TiO2 is effective in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to create large efficacy. Wearable and portable solar cells made of MCF rubber are the most desirable as soft materials in robots or flexible devices, and they are further desirable because they have self-generated power and power supply with sensing. Therefore, we investigated the effect of TiO2 catalysts on the photovoltaic effect of MCF rubber DSSCs under large tension and compression. The characteristics of the built-in electricity and photoelectricity were clarified experimentally. The experimental results were explained by a chemical−photovoltaic mechanism involving the behavior of dye, electrolytes, water, and rubber molecules, as well as a catalytic effect of the metal component of the MCF on Ni, Fe3O4, and TiO2. Once we are able to produce solar cells that have large tension and compression, the present experimental results and the model of the chemical−photovoltaic mecha... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: economic welfare, Energy, exhaustible resource, general equilibrium model, Natural Gas, sovereign wealth fund (SWF)
In this paper, a “general equilibrium” (GE) model was developed for the allocation of exhaustible natural resources to examine the impact of different extraction scenarios on intergenerational economic welfare. A stylized GE model was applied to Israel’s natural gas (NG) market to evaluate economic indicators resulting from NG-extraction scenarios: a baseline scenario based on current policy in the NG sector, a conservative scenario based on a lower extraction rate, and an intensive scenario based on a faster extraction rate. The impact of various resource income-allocation strategies on intergenerational economic welfare was examined through the mechanism of a “sovereign wealth fund” (SWF). The results indicate that a higher NG-extraction rate combined with an appropriate investment strategy for NG profits is preferable from an economic perspective compared to a conservative rate. Investment of the government take from the NG market in research and development (R&D) of renewable elect... [more]

Keywords: auxiliary cooling, heat pump, sludge, specific moisture extraction rate
This study proposes an improved design for a typical sludge continuous feeding drying system connected with three air-source heat pumps. The system’s performance was further improved using air-deflectors on the drying chamber’s internal sidewalls, enhancing the heat and mass transfer between the conveyor sludge and circulating airflow. In this study, numerical analysis was performed to elucidate the deflector designs on the airflow field and thermal temperature field distributions in the drying chamber. The specific moisture extraction rate (SMER) value was quantified to evaluate the system’s overall improvement during experiments. With a suitable deflector design, the average percent water content in sludge could be further reduced to 22.2% with drying time of 18.3 h, and the SMER value could be enhanced from 1.38 kg/kWh to as high as 1.83 kg/kWh with an increment of 32.44%. Moreover, to prevent overloading and frequent shutdown of the compressors, an auxiliary cooling subsystem was d... [more]

Keywords: biofuel, Botryococcus braunii, hydrocarbon, pigment
The green alga Botryococcus braunii produces abundant hydrocarbons, in the form of drop-in biodiesel, which promoted interest in the species as a renewable fuel. However, despite the observation of dense populations in the wild, Botryococcus grows very slowly in culture, severely limiting its potential for development as a bioresource. Undertaking a biodiscovery program, we found new strains of Botryococcus in locations ranging from tropical to temperate Australia and from both fresh and brackish waters. As part of the ecophysiological characterisation of this new biodiversity, lipid and pigment compositions were studied for six new strains from six different locations. The strains were inoculated in either freshwater or brackish (salinity of 4)-based medium and maintained over 150 days. The growth of cultures was studied continuously, while lipid and pigment composition were analysed at final harvest on day 150. No significant differences in growth rate between fresh and brackish medi... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ADINA software, flow boiling, heat transfer coefficient, minichannel, Trefftz functions
This work focuses on subcooled boiling heat transfer during flow in a minichannel heat sink with three or five minichannels of 1 mm depth. The heated element for FC-72 flowing along the minichannels was a thin foil of which temperature on the outer surface was measured due to the infrared thermography. The test section was oriented vertically or horizontally. A steady state heat transfer process and a laminar, incompressible flow of the fluid in a central minichannel were assumed. The heat transfer problem was described by the energy equations with an appropriate system of boundary conditions. Several mathematical methods were applied to solve the heat transfer problem with the Robin condition to determine the local heat transfer coefficients at the fluid/heated foil interface. Besides the 1D approach as a simple analytical method, a more sophisticated 2D approach was proposed with solutions by the Trefftz functions and ADINA software. Finite element method (FEM) calculations were cond... [more]
Bubbles in Crude Oil and Commodity Energy Index: New Evidence
Christos Floros, Georgios Galyfianakis
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: brent, bubbles, CEI, crude oil, energy prices, SADF, WTI
This paper considers a long dataset of both Brent and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil prices and the Commodity (fuel) energy index (CEI) to identify possible bubbles. Using the Supremum Augmented Dickey−Fuller (SADF) test, we compare results from WTI and Brent with CEI. We prove that the CEI follows Brent crude oil (they provide similar bubble periods) and that Brent is recognized as a crude oil benchmark. Financial managers should incorporate it into their analysis and forecasts. The findings are strongly recommended to energy policymakers and investors.

Keywords: interval mathematics, Markov Chain, power system, reliability, resilience, uncertainty
Prevention and mitigation of low probability, high impact events is becoming a priority for power system operators, as natural disasters are hitting critical infrastructures with increased frequency all over the world. Protecting power networks against these events means improving their resilience in planning, operation and restoration phases. This paper introduces a framework based on time-varying interval Markov Chains to assess system’s resilience to catastrophic events. After recognizing the difficulties in accurately defining transition probabilities, due to the presence of data uncertainty, this paper proposes a novel approach based on interval mathematics, which allows representing the elements of the transition matrices by intervals, and computing reliable enclosures of the transient state probabilities. The proposed framework is validated on a case study, which is based on the resilience analysis of a power system in the presence of multiple contemporary faults. The results sh... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asymmetric voltage source, half-bridge, multilevel inverter and Tri-state architecture
In this paper, a ‘k’-state inverter producing a higher number of voltage levels was designed, and we studied the inverter’s working. Further, a tri-state inverter was derived from the ‘k’-state inverter, which could build a maximum number of output voltage levels with the requirement of fewer components, thereby reducing the cost and size. A single Tri-state architecture generates three direct current (D.C.) voltage levels; therefore, cascading five tri-state architectures can generate 242 levels of DC voltages. Further, the inversion is done via the H bridge, which leads to 485 levels of the output voltage. Algorithms to design the amplitude of voltage sources and the generation of pulses are discussed in this paper. The proposed tri-state inverter takes a significant role in advancing renewable energy systems in utilizing inverter technology. A simulation study validated the operation of the proposed inverter. Moreover, an experimental setup was built for a single-phase 485-level inv... [more]

Keywords: dynamic DEA, efficiency measurement, electricity power generation, undesirable outputs, weak disposability
Studying the evolution of the efficiency of the electricity generation sector is a relevant task for policy makers, and requires the undesirable outputs derived from the activity to be considered in the evaluation. In this work, we propose a dynamic slack-based Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model that incorporates the assumption of weak disposability between the generation of electricity from fossil sources and the CO2 emissions caused by the sector to measure the technical efficiency of 24 Latin American and Caribbean countries in the period 2000−2016. The results show that, of the total number of countries studied, four are efficient overall, and four groupings of countries in relation to the levels of efficiency achieved are also identified. These results are important given that less-efficient countries can, through learning, increase their efficiency in electricity generation or emulate the future strategies proposed by the most efficient countries.

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydro-thermal coordination, Lagrange multipliers, Lagrangian dual problem, Lagrangian relaxation, step-size update algorithm, subgradient methods
The backbone of a conventional electrical power generation system relies on hydro-thermal coordination. Due to its intrinsic complex, large-scale and constrained nature, the feasibility of a direct approach is reduced. With this limitation in mind, decomposition methods, particularly Lagrangian relaxation, constitutes a consolidated choice to “simplify” the problem. Thus, translating a relaxed problem approach indirectly leads to solutions of the primal problem. In turn, the dual problem is solved iteratively, and Lagrange multipliers are updated between each iteration using subgradient methods. However, this class of methods presents a set of sensitive aspects that often require time-consuming tuning tasks or to rely on the dispatchers’ own expertise and experience. Hence, to tackle these shortcomings, a novel Lagrangian multiplier update adaptative algorithm is proposed, with the aim of automatically adjust the step-size used to update Lagrange multipliers, therefore avoiding the nee... Flow Inside the Sidewall Gaps of Hydraulic Machines: A Review
Lucie Zemanová, Pavel Rudolf
April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: axial thrust, disk friction, hydraulic machines, Pumps, sidewall gap flow, Turbines
The paper critically reviews the current state of the art in flow inside sidewall gaps of hydraulic pumps and turbines. It describes the consequences of the presence of this type of flow in turbomachinery and then relates it to other physical phenomena that determine the behavior, operating characteristics, and overall performance of the machine. Despite the small dimensions of the rotor-stator spaces, the flow in these regions can significantly affect the overall flow field and, consequently, efficiency. The circulation of the fluid inside the gaps and secondary flow that is caused by rotating elements influences the disk friction losses, which is of great importance, especially in the case of low specific speed pumps and turbines. The flow pattern affects the pressure distribution inside a machine and, thus, generates axial thrust. The presence of secondary flow also significantly changes the rotordynamics and can bring about undesirable vibrations and acoustics issues. This article... [more]

The etching of Si wafers significantly influences the efficiency of photovoltaic devices. Texturing can effectively decrease front surface reflection and improve device performance. Saw damage removal (SDR) is necessary to yields uniform random pyramidal surfaces without the appearance of saw marks, it entails significant consumption of chemical solutions and complicated cleaning steps. Herein, an alternative process of pre-texturing thermal treatment was carried out at 800 °C for 10 min, followed by anisotropic texturing, and a uniform pyramidal surface over a large area of the textured surface was obtained without saw marks. Compared with that of as-cut mono-Si wafers (30.7%), the weighted average reflectance of the samples textured with or without thermal treatment decreased to 11.2% and 11.9%, respectively, and further to 3% and 3.4%, respectively, when anti-reflection coatings were applied. In addition, saw marks on the wafer surface were used as gettering sites during thermal tre... [more]

Keywords: double and triple tube heat exchangers, heat transfer efficiency, heat transfer enhancement, large wet perimeter, petal-shaped tube
Conventional circular double or triple tube type heat exchanger, DHE or THE, is one of the compact heat exchangers; a large number of studies have been performed to improve their heat transfer performance. The authors demonstrated that a petal-shaped special DHE with a large wet perimeter yields a high heat transfer efficiency, η. In this study, the DHE with six or five petals-, five shallow petals-, and circular-inner tubes were used. To further improve the η of the DHE, a THE with a petal-shaped inner tube along with the middle and outer circular tubes were used. Hot water flowed through the inner tube and cold water flowed through the middle and outer tubes as a counter current flow. The heat transfer was approximately equal; however, the flow resistance (pressure loss) of the outer tube of the DHE could be decreased using the middle and outer tubes under the same amount of cold water as the DHE; consequently, the η could be improved. In addition, the effect of changing the flow pat... [more]

Keywords: catalyst, composite, cranberry pomace, fruit processing, hydrothermal liquefaction
This study provides fundamental insight and offers a promising catalytic hydrothermal method to harness cranberry pomace as a potential bioenergy and/or hydrochar source. The physical and chemical properties of Canadian cranberry pomace, supplied by Fruit d’Or Inc., were examined and the optimum operational conditions, in terms of biocrude yield, were obtained by the I-optimal matrix of Design Expert 11. Afterward, cranberry pomace hydrochar (CPH) and zeolite were separately introduced to the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) process to investigate the benefits and disadvantages associated with their catalytic activity. CPH was found to be a better host than zeolite to accommodate cellulosic sugars and showed great catalytic performance in producing hydrocarbons. However, high amounts of corrosive amino and aliphatic acids hinder the practical application of CPH as a catalyst. Alternatively, zeolite, as a commercial high surface area catalyst, had a higher activity for deoxygenation of c... [more]
