Keywords: bidirectional two-stage charger, electric vehicle, Model Predictive Control
This paper presents the four-quadrant operation modes of bidirectional chargers for electric vehicles (EVs) framed in smart car parks. A cascaded model predictive control (MPC) scheme for the bidirectional two-stage off-board chargers is proposed. The controller is constructed in two stages. The model predictive direct power control for the grid side is applied to track the active/reactive power references. The model predictive direct current control is proposed to achieve constant current charging/discharging for the EV load side. With this MPC strategy, EV chargers are able to transmit the active and reactive powers between the EV batteries and the power grid. Apart from exchanging the active power, the vehicle-for-grid (V4G) mode is proposed, where the chargers are used to deliver the reactive power to support the grid, simultaneously combined with grid-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-grid operation modes. In the V4G mode, the EV battery functions as the static var compensator. According t... [more]

Keywords: control approaches, control constraints, energy management, objective function, optimization method
The demand for electricity is increased due to the development of the industry, the electrification of transport, the rise of household demand, and the increase in demand for digitally connected devices and air conditioning systems. For that, solutions and actions should be developed for greater consumers of electricity. For instance, MG (Micro-grid) buildings are one of the main consumers of electricity, and if they are correctly constructed, controlled, and operated, a significant energy saving can be attained. As a solution, hybrid RES (renewable energy source) systems are proposed, offering the possibility for simple consumers to be producers of electricity. This hybrid system contains different renewable generators connected to energy storage systems, making it possible to locally produce a part of energy in order to minimize the consumption from the utility grid. This work gives a concise state-of-the-art overview of the main control approaches for energy management in MG systems... [more]

April 12, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grid-connected inverter, Lyapunov stability, nonlinear controller, proportional resonant control
This paper proposes a high-performance control technique based on Lyapunov’s stability theory for a single-phase grid-connected neutral-point-clamped quasi-impedance source inverter with LCL filter. The Lyapunov function based control is employed to regulate the inverter output current, whereas the proportional resonant controller is used to produce the reference of the inverter output current that is needed in the Lyapunov function based control. Use of proportional resonant controller ensures the zero steady-state error in the grid current. An important feature of the proposed Lyapunov function based control is the achievement of resonance damping without using a dedicated damping method. Furthermore, the modified simple boost control technique is proposed to eliminate the double-line frequency ripples in the quasi-impedance source inductor currents and minimize the double-line frequency ripples in the quasi-impedance source capacitor voltages. The proposed control technique consider... [more]

Keywords: dual three-phase, fault-tolerant design, multiple objective optimization, permanent magnet starter–generator
Permanent magnet synchronous machines provide many dramatic electromagnetic performances such as high efficiency and high power density, which make them more competitive in aircraft electrification, whereas, designing a permanent magnet starter−generator (PMSG), with given consideration to fault tolerance (FT), is a significant challenge and requires great effort. In this paper, a comprehensive FT PMSG design process is proposed which is applied to power systems of turboprops. Firstly, potential slot/pole combinations were selected based on winding factor, harmonic losses and manufacture issues. Then, pursuing high power density, a multiple objective optimization process was carried out to comprehensively rank performances. To meet a fault tolerance target, electrical, magnetic and thermal isolation topologies were investigated and compared, among which 18 slot/12 pole with dual three-phase was selected as the optimal one, with a power density of 7.9 kW/kg. Finally, a finite element an... [more]

Keywords: current-sharing capacitor, LED driver, LLC resonant converter
In this paper, an LLC light-emitting diode (LLC LED) driver based on the current-sharing capacitor is presented. In the proposed LED driver, the LLC resonant converter is used to step down the high input voltage, to provide galvanic isolation, to offer a constant current for LEDs. Moreover, the current-sharing capacitor connected to the central-tapped point of the secondary-side winding is used to balance the currents in two LED strings. By doing so, the voltage stress on this capacitor is quite low. Above all, the equivalent forward voltages of the two LED strings are generally influenced by the temperature and the LED current, and this does not affect the current-sharing performance, as will be demonstrated by experiment on the difference in number of LEDs between the two LED strings. In addition, only the current in one LED string is sensed and controlled by negative feedback control, while the current in the other LED string is determined by the current-sharing capacitor. Moreover,... [more]

Keywords: biomass combustion, electrical charging, particulate emissions
New particulate matter (PM) filtering technologies are needed to meet the emission regulations for small combustion appliances. In this work, we investigate the performance of a novel electrical particle filtration system, the single needle shielded corona charger (SCC), which offers an advantageous solution for PM control in boilers by enhancing particulate deposition within existing boiler sections. Experiments under different operating conditions of a wood-fired boiler were performed, wherein the SCC was installed upstream of either a condensing heat exchanger (CHX) or a cyclone. PM reduction was found to be strongly affected by the SCC temperature and the following collection surface area, and reached its highest reduction efficiency of >90% at the temperature range of 400−500 °C when operating in combination with a CHX. The SCC−cyclone combination was less efficient, providing a 27% PM reduction, as a result of the low surface area and residence time in the cyclone. These results... [more]

Keywords: fuzzy logic controller, induction motor, quadratic V/f, sliding mode controller, solar PV water pumping systems
In rural and remote areas, solar photovoltaic energy (PV) water pumping systems (SPWPSs) are being favored over diesel-powered water pumping due to environmental and economic considerations. PV is a clean source of electric energy offering low operational and maintenance cost. However, the direct-coupled SPWPS requires inventive solutions to improve the system’s efficiency under solar power variations while producing the required amount of pumped water concurrently. This paper introduces a new quadratic V/f (Q V/f) control method to drive an induction motor powered directly from a solar PV source using a two-stage power converter without storage batteries. Conventional controllers usually employ linear V/f control, where the reference motor speed is derived from the PV input power and the dc-link voltage error using a simple proportional−integral (PI) controller. The proposed Q V/f-based system is compared with the conventional linear V/f control using a simulation case study under dif... [more]

Keywords: additives, ammonia, autoignition, computational singular perturbation, explosive time scales, hydrogen peroxide, ignition delay control, NOx, water vapor
NO formation, which is one of the main disadvantages of ammonia combustion, was studied during the isochoric, adiabatic autoignition of ammonia/air mixtures using the algorithm of Computational Singular Perturbation (CSP). The chemical reactions supporting the action of the mode relating the most to NO were shown to be essentially the ones of the extended Zeldovich mechanism, thus indicating that NO formation is mainly thermal and not due to fuel-bound nitrogen. Because of this, addition of water vapor reduced NO formation, because of its action as a thermal buffer, but increased ignition delay, thus exacerbating the second important caveat of ammonia combustion, which is unrealistically long ignition delay. However, it was also shown that further addition of just 2% molar of H2O2 does not only reduce the ignition delay by a factor of 30, but also reverses the way water vapor affects ignition delay. Specifically, in the ternary mixture NH3/H2O/H2O2, addition of water vapor does not pro... [more]

Keywords: discrete-time PID controller, Hooke–Jeeves algorithm, isolated forward converter, multivariable unconstrained pattern search method, simulated annealing
Most of the traditional PID tuning methods are heuristic in nature. The heuristic approach-based tuned PID controllers show only nominal performance. In addition, in the case of a digital redesign approach, mapping of the heuristically-designed continuous-time PID controllers into discrete-time PID controllers and in case of the direct digital design approach, mapping of the continuous-time plant (forward converter) into the discrete-time plant, results in frequency distortion (or warping). Besides this, nonlinear elements such as ADC and DAC, and delay in the digital control loop deteriorate the control performance. There is a need to tune conventionally-designed digital controllers to enhance performance. This paper proposes optimized discrete-time PID controllers for a forward DC−DC converter operating in continuous conduction mode (CCM). The considered conventional digital PID controllers designed on the basis of the digital redesign and direct digital approaches are tuned by one o... [more]

To balance the cost and volume when applying a low output current ripple, the power supply design should be able to eliminate the current ripple under any duty cycle in medium and high switching frequencies, and considerably reduce filter volume to improve power density. A stacked buck converter was eventually selected after reviewing the existing solutions and discussing their advantages and disadvantages. A stacked buck converter is used as a basis to propose the transient response and output current ripple elimination effect, boundary limit control method, and low output ripple dead time modulation method to make individual improvements. The principle, mathematical derivation, small-signal model, and compensator design method of the improvement method are presented in detail. Moreover, simulation results are used to mutually verify the correctness and effectiveness of the improvement method. A stacked buck converter with 330-V input, 50-V output, and 1-kW output power was implemente... [more]

Keywords: bifurcation diagram, boost-flyback converter, Floquet multipliers, Zero Average Dynamics control, Zero Average Surface control
The boost-flyback converter is a DC-DC step-up power converter with a wide range of technological applications. In this paper, we analyze the boost-flyback dynamics when controlled via a modified Zero-Average-Dynamics control technique, hereby named Zero-Average-Surface (ZAS). While using the ZAS strategy, it is possible to calculate the duty cycle at each PWM cycle that guarantees a desired stable period-1 solution, by forcing the system to evolve in such way that a function that is constructed with strategical combination of the states over the PWM period has a zero average. We show, by means of bifurcation diagrams, that the period-1 orbit coexists with a stable period-2 orbit with a saturated duty cycle. While using linear stability analysis, we demonstrate that the period-1 orbit is stable over a wide range of parameters and it loses stability at high gains and low loads via a period doubling bifurcation. Finally, we show that, under the right choice of parameters, the period-1 or... [more]

Keywords: data assimilation, wake modeling, wake steering, wind farm
Methods for wind farm power optimization through the use of wake steering often rely on engineering wake models due to the computational complexity associated with resolving wind farm dynamics numerically. Within the transient, turbulent atmospheric boundary layer, closed-loop control is required to dynamically adjust to evolving wind conditions, wherein the optimal wake model parameters are estimated as a function of time in a hybrid physics- and data-driven approach using supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) data. Analytic wake models rely on wake velocity deficit superposition methods to generalize the individual wake deficit to collective wind farm flow. In this study, the impact of the wake model superposition methodologies on closed-loop control are tested in large eddy simulations of the conventionally neutral atmospheric boundary layer with full Coriolis effects. A model for the non-vanishing lateral velocity trailing a yaw misaligned turbine, termed secondary steer... [more]

Keywords: control optimization, electric vehicle, modularity, propulsion cooling system, thermal management
In this work, the problem of reducing the energy consumption of the cooling circuit for the propulsion system of an all-electric vehicle is approached with two different concepts: improvement of the powertrain efficiency and optimization of the control strategy. Improvement of the powertrain efficiency is obtained through a modular design, which consists of replacing the electric powertrain with several smaller traction modules whose powers sum up to the total power of the original powertrain. In this paper, it is shown how modularity, among other benefits, also allows reducing the energy consumption of the cooling system up to 54%. The energy consumption of the cooling system is associated with two components: the pump and the fan. They produce a so-called auxiliary load on the battery, reducing the maximum range of the vehicle. In conventional cooling systems, the pump and the fan are controlled with a thermostat, without taking into account the energy consumption. Conversely, in thi... [more]

Keywords: circulation current, co-phased traction system, microgrid, secondary control
High speed and heavy loads have become more prevalent in the traction power supply system recently. To ensure system operating stability, better power quality, and sufficient power capacity, improvements are needed over the conventional traction system. Inspired by the concept of a microgrid (MG), an AC co-phase traction MG system was proposed. Substations were connected to the traction grid as distributed generators operate in islanded mode. Droop control was adopted as the primary control to stabilize the system’s operating frequency and voltage. Considering the operating features of the substation and locomotive load, a de-centralized secondary control strategy was proposed for AC co-phase traction MG system operation with enhanced resiliency. The proposed control strategy could increase system stability and prevent circulation currents between substations. Moreover, the proposed de-centralized coordination between substations does not rely on communication, which promotes the syste... [more]

Fault detection and diagnosis can improve safety and reliability of gas turbines. Current studies on gas turbine fault detection and diagnosis mainly focus on the case of abundant fault samples. However, fault data are rare or even unavailable for gas turbines, especially newly-run gas turbines. Aiming to realize fault detection with only normal data, this paper proposes the concept of normal pattern group. A group of long-short term memory (LSTM) networks are first used for characterizing the mapping relationships among measurable parameters of healthy three-shaft gas turbines. Experiments show that the proposed method can detect all 13 common gas path faults of three-shaft gas turbines sensitively while remaining low false alarm rate. Comparison experiment with single normal pattern model verifies the necessaries and superiorities of using normal pattern group. Meanwhile, comparison between LSTM network and other methods including support vector regression, single-layer feedforward n... [more]

This paper refers to the issue that mainly appears in distribution grids, where renewable energy sources (RES) are widely installed. In such grids, one of the main problems is the coordination of energy production time with demand time, especially if photovoltaic energy sources are present. To face this problem, battery energy storage units (ESU) can be installed. In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to optimizing the use of ESU. This paper contains a simple description of available solutions for the application of ESU as well as an original proposal for selecting the optimal location and control of ESU. The ESU selection method is based on the use of a genetic algorithm and the ESU control method utilizes the fuzzy logic. The combination of the aforementioned methods/algorithms of ESU application is named an integrated algorithm. The performance of the proposed algorithm was validated by multivariate computer simulations with the use of the real low-voltage grid mode... [more]

Innovative heating networks with a hybrid generation park can make an important contribution to the energy turnaround. By integrating heat from several heat generators and a high proportion of different renewable energies, they also have a high degree of flexibility. Optimizing the operation of such systems is a complex task due to the diversity of producers, the use of storage systems with stratified charging and continuous changes in system properties. Besides, it is necessary to consider conflicting economic and ecological targets. Operational optimization of district heating systems using nonlinear models is underrepresented in practice and science. The regenerative braking of railway vehicles is widely used in DC railway systems all over the world. This mode of operation provides an opportunity to reuse part of the energy consumed by vehicles, and makes the railway system more energy efficient. During regenerative braking, not only energy management is an issue, but also Electromagnetic Compatibility EMC issues, such as interference of generated current harmonics with a railway signaling system. Keywords: dissolved gas analysis feature, expert experience, fault diagnosis, Genetic Algorithm, power transformer, probabilistic support vector machine
Support vector machine (SVM), which serves as one kind of artificial intelligence technique, has been widely employed in transformer fault diagnosis when involving dissolved gas analysis (DGA). However, when using SVM, it is easy to misclassify samples which are located near the decision boundary, resulting in a decrease in the accuracy of fault diagnosis. Given this issue, this paper proposed a genetic algorithm (GA) optimized probabilistic SVM (GAPSVM) integrated with the fuzzy three-ratio (FTR) method, in which the GAPSVM can judge whether a sample is near the decision boundary according to its output probabilities and diagnose the samples which are not near the decision boundary. Then, FTR is used to diagnose the samples which are near the decision boundary. Combining GAPSVM and FTR, the integrated model can accurately diagnose samples near the decision boundary of SVM. In addition, to avoid redundant and erroneous features, this paper also used GA to select the optimal DGA feature... [more]

Keywords: electric railway, harmonic overvoltage, harmonic resonance, resonant frequency, stability analysis, traction power supply system
Harmonic overvoltage in electric railway traction networks can pose a serious threat to the safe and stable operation of the traction power supply system (TPSS). Existing studies aim at improving the control damping of grid-connected converters, neglecting the impedance frequency characteristics (IFCs) of the actual TPSS. The applicable frequency range of these studies is relatively low, usually no more than half of the switching frequency, and there is a large gap with the actual traction network harmonic overvoltage frequency range of 750 Hz−3750 Hz. In this paper, first, the IFCs of the actual TPSS in the wide frequency range of 150 Hz−5000 Hz are obtained through field tests, and the resonant frequency distribution characteristics of TPSS are analyzed. After that, the aliasing effect of the sampling process and the sideband effect of the modulation process of the digital control of the grid-connected converter are considered. Based on the relative relationships among the inherent r... [more]

Humidity-sensitive, demand-controlled ventilation systems have been in use for many years in regions with oceanic climates. Some attempts have been made to apply this technology in Poland, which has a continental climate. This article evaluates the performance and energy consumption of such a system when applied in an eight-floor, multiunit, residential building, i.e., the virtual reference building described by the National Energy Conservation Agency (NAPE), Poland. Simulations using the computer program CONTAM were performed for the whole heating season based upon the climate in Warsaw. Besides passive stack ventilation, that served as a reference, two ventilation systems were studied: one standard and one “hybrid” system with additional roof fans. This study confirmed that the application of humidity-sensitive, demand-controlled ventilation in multiunit residential buildings in a continental climate (Dfb) led to significant energy savings (up to 11.64 kWh/m2 of primary energy). In this article, a modified control structure for a single-stage three phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system is presented. In the proposed system, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) function is developed using a new adaptive model-based technique, in which the maximum power point (MPP) voltage can be precisely located based on the characteristics of the PV source. Keywords: active fault-tolerant control, five-phase PMSG, generalized proportional integral observer, tidal current energy conversion system
In recent years, multi-phase permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSGs) have become attractive in the field of tidal current energy conversion systems (TCECS) due to their high-power density, reliability, and availability. However, external disturbances and malfunctions in power conversion chains will bring challenges to achieving stable and continuous tidal current energy harnessing. Using generalized proportional integral observers, an active fault-tolerant control (AFTC) strategy is therefore proposed for a five-phase PMSG based TCECS that is subjected to an open switch fault (OSF) in the generator side converter. This proposed AFTC strategy is applied into q-axis current control loops, which contain fault detection and compensation. The fault compensator will be smoothly activated using a sigmoid function once the OSF is detected. Finally, a small-scale power experimental platform emulating the TCECS is established in order to verify the feasibility and efficiency of the propo... [more]
