Matthias Eydner, Lu Wan, Tobias Henzler, Konstantinos Stergiaropoulos
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active demand response, energy flexibility, exergy analysis, Model Predictive Control, stratified hot water storage tank
Heat pumps coupled with thermal energy storage (TES) systems are seen as a promising technology for load management that can be used to shift peak loads to off-peak hours. Most of the existing model predictive control (MPC) studies on tariff-based load shifting deploying hot water tanks use simplified tank models. In this study, an MPC framework that accounts for transient thermal behavior (i.e., mixing and stratification) by applying energy (EMPC) and exergy (XMPC) analysis is proposed. A case study for an office building equipped with an air handling unit (AHU) revealed that the MPC strategy had a high load-shifting capacity: over 80% of the energy consumption took place during off-peak hours when there was an electricity surplus in the grid. An analysis of a typical day showed that the XMPC method was able to provide more appropriate stratification within the TES for all load characteristics. An annual exergy analysis demonstrated that, during cold months, energy degradation in the... [more]

Keywords: DFIG, fuzzy control, subsynchronous resonance, transmission line, wind farm
This paper presents a novel fuzzy control scheme for damping the subsynchronous resonance (SSR) according to the wide-area measurement system (WAMS) in power systems including doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind farms connected to series capacitive compensated transmission networks. The SSR damping is attained by adding the fuzzy controller as a supplementary signal at the stator voltage loop of the grid-side converter (GSC) of DFIG wind farms. Additionally, time delays due to communication signals are important when using WAMSs. If the time delays are ignored, it causes system instability. In this paper, the time delays are modeled with a separate fuzzy input to the controller. The new fuzzy control approach is executed by using the angular velocity of synchronous generators (w) and its variation in the angular velocity (dw/dt). The effectiveness and success of the WAMS-based fuzzy controller is demonstrated by comparison with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and imp... [more]

Keywords: all-clamped plate, reduced-order extended state observer, sliding mode control, vibration suppression
Considering the problems of total disturbances, i.e., higher harmonics, model uncertainties and external excitations in a practical vibration control system, a compound vibration suppression method is proposed for an all-clamped plate, which combines sliding mode control (SMC) with reduced-order extended state observer (RESO). First, a state space model of the all-clamped plate with inertial actuator is established. Second, a RESO is designed to estimate the system state variables and total disturbances in real time. In addition, the total disturbances can further be attenuated by RESO through a feedforward compensation part. Third, a sliding mode controller based on the estimation values is designed for a vibration control system. The Lyapunov stability theorem is further applied to prove the stability of the whole closed-loop vibration control system with the proposed controller. Finally, vibration control experiment equipment is built based on the NI-PCIe acquisition card, inertial... [more]

Keywords: automatic generation control, electric vehicles, energy storage systems, power dispatch strategies, smart power system, wind power plant
The modern power system is characterized by the massive integration of renewables, especially wind power. The intermittent nature of wind poses serious concerns for the system operator owing to the inaccuracies in wind power forecasting. Forecasting errors require more balancing power for maintaining frequency within the nominal range. These services are now offered through conventional power plants that not only increase the operational cost but also adversely affect the environment. The modern power system emphasizes the massive penetration of wind power that will replace conventional power plants and thereby impact the provision of system services from conventional power plants. Therefore, there is an emergent need to find new control and balancing solutions, such as regulation reserves from wind power plants and electric vehicles, without trading off their natural behaviors. This work proposes real-time optimized dispatch strategies for automatic generation control (AGC) to utilize... [more]

Keywords: power quality, reactive power compensation, STATCOM
Recently, because of the increase in the number of connections to Distributed Generation (DG), the problem of lowering voltage stability in the distribution system has become an issue. Reactive power compensators, such as Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOM), may be used to solve the problem of voltage stability degradation. However, because of the complexity of the distribution system, it is very difficult to select the installation location for STATCOM. Furthermore, when installed in the wrong location, economical efficiency and availability problems may occur. This paper proposes a Virtual STATCOM Configuration and Control method that would operate like a single STATCOM based on multiple DGs connected to the system. The proposed Virtual STATCOM has the merit of being economical by using existing facilities without adding new power facilities, and it solves the problem of the difficulty of selecting the installation location because of the complexity of the distribution system.... Keywords: customers’ expectations, decision support, improvement of products, Machine Learning, mechanical engineering, naïve Bayesian classifier, photovoltaic panels, predicting, quality, weighted sum model
Improving the quality of products remains a challenge. This is due to the turbulent environment and the dynamics of changing customer requirements. Hence, the key action is to predict beneficial changes in products, which will allow one to achieve customer satisfaction and reduce the waste of resources. Therefore, the purpose of this article was to develop a universal model to predict the expected direction of quality improvement. Initially, the purpose of the research was determined by using the SMART(-ER) method. Then, during the brainstorming method (BM), the product criteria and range states of these criteria were determined. Next, a survey with the Likert scale was used to obtain customers’ expectations, i.e., assessing the importance of criteria and customers’ satisfaction with ranges of product criteria states. Based on customer assessments, quality product levels were calculated using the Weighted Sum Model (WSM). Then, the initial customer satisfaction from the product quality... [more]

Keywords: consumption, control, coolant, longitudinal T1 and transverse T2 relaxation times, magnetization, measurement error, nuclear magnetic resonance, nuclear power plant
The necessity of coolant flow consumption measurement accuracy increase in the nuclear reactor primary circuit has been substantiated. Additionally, the need to control the coolant condition in the current flow inside the pipeline is shown. Nowadays, the real-time coolant’s condition control function is not implemented at stationary nuclear power plants or mobile nuclear power plants used in moving objects. It is shown that a coolant consumption measurement error decreases and its condition data availability increases the heat transfer efficiency and the electrical energy generation (without the nuclear reactor and steam generator design change). Problems arising during coolant consumption control using various flowmeters models in the nuclear reactor primary circuit are considered. It has been found that nuclear magnetic flowmeters can solve these problems. New difficulties are noted as emerging when using pulsed nuclear magnetic flowmeters designs developed for measuring hydrocarbons... [more]

In recent years climate change has emerged as a global issue directly related to quality of life. In this context, one of the key goals in the next few decades will be to transition the global economy to a sustainable system. The nature of the energy planning process dictates the application of complex models. There is no universal solution to the energy planning problem. Each territory requires a bespoke strategy aimed at utilising its specific potential. The research presented in this paper explores reaching a zero-carbon energy system at the city level. It establishes a step-by-step decarbonisation method and proposes an energy transition index (ETI). The index presented is used to evaluate different renewable energy sources (RES) deployment scenarios in the context of affordability, self-reliance, and sustainability. The main aspects and barriers of deploying sustainable energy solutions are also explored. Some of the key challenges of RES deployment are identified as capital inten... [more]

Keywords: durability, economy, FCHEV, fuzzy control, moving average filter
A compound energy management strategy is proposed to improve the fuel cell’s durability and the economy of fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles (FCHEV). A control strategy that combines fuzzy control and switching control is proposed, taking into account factors that affect the fuel cell’s durability and the supercapacitor park’s safety. To smooth the output power of fuel cells under frequent variable load conditions, a moving average filtering algorithm has been added. Finally, co-simulation using Advisor and Matlab/Simulink under the World Light Vehicle Test Cycle (WLTC) compares the proposed strategy with fuzzy control and power following strategies. Keywords: active time delay control, analytical model, SiC power MOSFETs, voltage balancing
Series connection is an attractive approach to increase the blocking voltage of SiC power MOSFETs. Currently, the voltage balancing design of the series connection of the SiC MOSFETs highly relies on offline calibration and is challenging in the complex field operation. In this paper, a quantitative model to assess the voltage balancing performance is proposed to achieve a clear mathematical interpretation of the dynamic response of the voltage imbalance control loop. To begin with, an analytical model of the drain-source voltage rising time during the turn-off transient concerning the non-constant Miller plateau is proposed. Based on the turn-off model of the single device, the voltage imbalance sensitivity (VIS) is proposed to describe the influence of the parameters on the gate driving signals on the voltage imbalance. The VIS parameter can be easily achieved from the behavior of single devices, abandoning the complex variables in series connection. Further, for the typical case, ac... [more]

Keywords: flywheel, high-speed, kinetic energy storage system, position tracking, sensorless, switched reluctance machine
High-speed electrical machines have been of great research interest because of their excellent efficiency and high storage capacity. In the case of switched reluctance machines (SRMs), position feedback is required for effective operation. The installation of this sensor in a high-speed flywheel is difficult and expensive. This paper proposes and analyses a methodology to estimate the position of a SRM and remove the position encoder to apply the machine as a flywheel at 50,000 rpm. The machine is modeled with non-linear characteristics, and is simulated under single-pulse operation due to the high-speed. Two configurations of the sensorless method are presented: Robust Method and Sequential Method. The robust configuration identifies the firing angles position only, while the sequential setup can track any position. Both configurations present advantages and disadvantages in relation to the error of estimation and to the number of estimations. The methods are tested in closed-loop spe... [more]

Keywords: breakdown estimation, gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), leader propagation, lightning impulse voltage, superimposed voltage
The impulse breakdown attributes are of rudimentary importance in the insulation coordination in the gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). The critical voltage waveshape for the insulation is the surge over voltages. Usually, such over-voltages will emerge on the electrical equipment while these are burdened under DC or AC working voltages. Therefore, during relatively small-time intervals, the undermined devices are exposed to surge voltages that are superimposed upon the already running DC or AC voltages. From a safety point of view, and for providing reliable power to the consumer, we need to study the breakdown characteristics under such over-voltages, with reference to normal operating voltages (DC or AC). The breakdown mechanism of the GIS under compressed SF6 gas is known to be controlled by a stepped leader propagation method. Although different experimental studies have been conducted by many researchers for different experimental conditions under DC, AC, or impulse high voltages al... [more]

This paper presents a novel method for current control for a modular multilevel converter (MMC). The proposed current control methodology is based on a modified sliding mode control (SMC) with proportional and integral (PI) sliding surface which allows fast transient responses and improves the robustness of the MMC control performance. As the proposed method is derived via Lyapunov direct method, the closed-loop stability is ensured and results in globally asymptotically stable. Furthermore, the reaching time is also guaranteed by the proposed method, leading to fast transient responses. The proposed method is validated by comparing with some existing methods, which are proportional integral controller and conventional SMC, via offline and hardware-in-loop (HIL) simulations where a 10 MW, medium-voltage MMC system is tested. According to these results, the proposed method is able to provide fast transient responses, zero overshoot, and robustness to the weak grid and short-circuit cond... [more]

Considering the development of the hybrid wind and solar photovoltaic generation and smart grid, Active Front-End (AFE) converters for high-power applications are facing significant opportunities and challenges related to power quality and efficiency. The Pre-programmed Pulse-Width Modulation (PPWM) techniques can strictly control the harmonic spectrum of a specified voltage or current waveform generated by a high-power AFE converters, and have been extensively applied to reduce or even eliminate the harmonic distortion with low switching losses for high-power converters in order to deal with these issues aforementioned. For the PPWM techniques with low switching frequency, Selective Harmonic Elimination (SHE) and Selective Harmonic Mitigation (SHM) have been the prevailing solutions and gain widespread popularity, among which SHM can provide further control of the harmonic spectrum in cases of similar switching losses to SHE. Voltage sag in a power system is an unavoidable power quality issue, and it is also an urgent concern of sensitive industrial users. To ensure the power quality demand and economical operation of the power system, voltage sag management has always drawn great attention from researchers around the world. The latest research that realizes the power quality conditioning has used dynamic voltage restorers (DVRs), static VAR compensator (SVCs), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFISs), and fuzzy logic controllers based on DVR to mitigate voltage sag. These devices, methods, and control strategies that have been recently used for voltage sag mitigation have some limitations, including high cost, increased complexity, and lower performance. This article proposes a novel, efficient, reliable, and cost-effective voltage sag mitigation scheme based on a modular multilevel converter (MMC) that ensures effective power delivery at nominal power under transient voltage conditions. Keywords: backstepping iteration, dynamic surface control, electrohydraulic systems, parametric uncertainty, variable structure disturbance observers
This paper focuses on the position tracking control issue of electrohydraulic systems (EHS). The dynamical model of EHS is introduced in the first place, based on which a type of Variable Structure Disturbance Observer (VSDO) is constructed for EHS to estimate the parametric uncertainty the EHS possesses. Then, a backstepping controller is designed under VSDO to realize the high precision position tracking purpose. To avoid the phenomenon of differential explosion, a dynamic surface control method is adopted in this paper, which improved the position tracking control performance of EHS. The proposed theoretical results are verified by numerical simulation and experiment to illustrate the feasibility.

The internal energy (U-energy) conversion to free energy (F-energy) and energy dissipation (S-energy) is a basic process that enables the continuity of life on Earth. Here, we present a novel method of evaluating F-energy in a membrane system containing ternary solutions of non-electrolytes based on the Kr version of the Kedem−Katchalsky−Peusner (K−K−P) formalism for concentration polarization conditions. The use of this formalism allows the determination of F-energy based on the production of S-energy and coefficient of the energy conversion efficiency. The K−K−P formalism requires the calculation of the Peusner coefficients Kijr and Kdetr (i, j ∈ {1, 2, 3}, r = A, B), which are necessary to calculate S-energy, the degree of coupling and coefficients of energy conversion efficiency. In turn, the equations for S-energy and coefficients of energy conversion efficiency are used in the F-energy calculations. Keywords: compensation, hybrid AC/DC microgrid, interlinking converter, line impedance estimation
Due to the voltage drop of the line impedance, power-transfer deviation occurs in the interlinking converter (IC) of hybrid microgrids. In this paper, an IC control strategy in hybrid microgrids is proposed, which can estimate the line resistance precisely. Moreover, the proposed method can easily realize accurate power transmission between sub-grids and maintain the power balance of hybrid microgrid. Firstly, one specified small signal is injected into the IC at the AC bus of the distributed generation so as to estimate the line impedance. The frequency of the injected small signal is highly relevant to the AC bus voltage. As a result, the IC can accurately detect its line impedance by extracting the injected small signal frequency with a filter and phase-lock-loop (PLL) without communication. Secondly, with the line impedance estimation, the voltage drop on the line can be compensated with local information of the IC, and consequently, accurate power transfer can be realized. Finally... Pulse-width modulation (PWM) inverter drive systems are widely applied in industry for their great speed-control characteristics and performance. However, the common-mode voltage of the inverter induces motor bearing voltage and bearing current, which result in premature bearing failure. In this paper, the influence of stator and rotor grounding impedances on the bearing voltage of the motor is investigated. A comprehensive bearing-current equivalent model circuit is proposed. Based on circuit analysis, the relationship between bearing voltage ratio (BVR) and grounding impedances is derived, showing that bearing voltage varies with the stator grounding impedance on a V-shaped surface. The minimum BVR appears at some specific combinations of the stator and rotor grounding impedance. Based on this, a method of suppression of rotor-grounding bearing currents based on matching the stator and rotor grounding impedances is proposed. The analytical results are verified by experimental results... [more]

This article proposes a dual-active-bridge control to support the fast synthetic inertial action in DC microgrids. First of all, the selection of the isolated DC/DC converter to link an energy storage system with the DC bus in a microgrid is analyzed and the advantages of the dual-active-bridge converter controlled by a single-phase shift modulation justify its selection. An active front-end can be then adapted to connect the DC bus with an AC grid. Secondly, this paper presents the design of a discrete PI controller for supporting fast synthetic inertial action. In particular, a discrete dual-active-bridge model based on the transferred power between both converter bridges, which overcomes the approximations of the output current linearization model, is proposed. Moreover, the article introduces a novel equation set to directly and dynamically tune discrete PI parameters to fulfill the design frequency specifications based on the inversion formulae method. In this way, during the volt... [more]
