Skyhook Control Law Extension for Suspension with Nonlinear Spring Characteristics
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: combat vehicle, continuous skyhook control law, nonlinear dynamics, numerical analysis
This work aimed to improve the vehicle body stability and the ride comfort of the tracked military vehicle crew. For this purpose, magnetorheological fluid dampers were used. This process has made the theoretical model of the tracked platform a semi-active suspension system. This modification allows for the application of different control laws to these systems. The usage of the continuous skyhook control law assumes the influence of three fictitious viscous dampers. Their force in this conceptual model is replicated by the magnetorheological dampers of the suspension in the real system. However, the continuous skyhook control law does not take into consideration the nonlinear stiffness characteristics. In this paper, the continuous skyhook control law has been appropriately modified. The modification takes into consideration the nonlinearity of the stiffness characteristics. Applying the modified continuous skyhook control law improves the stability of the vehicle body and the vehicle... [more]

Design and Implementation of Input AC Filters and Predictive Control for Matrix-Converter Based PMSM Drive Systems
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: input AC filter design, matrix-converter, PMSM, predictive control
Matrix converters have many advantages, including high-efficiency, single-stage AC/AC energy conversion, bidirectional power flow, a near-unity input power factor, sinusoidal three-phase input currents, and sinusoidal three-phase output currents. However, matrix converters have 360 Hz voltage pulsations at the virtual DC-bus, which produce input harmonic currents and output harmonic currents, which cause unsatisfactory responses. To solve the problem of the input harmonic currents, a systematic design of an input three-phase current modulation method and an input three-phase AC filter that uses two different design methods are proposed. In addition, to improve dynamic responses, two predictive speed controllers are investigated and compared, and a predictive current controller is studied to reduce the output harmonic currents. A digital signal processor and an FPGA are used to execute the control algorithms. Several experimental results validate the theoretical analysis and show that t... [more]

Ergonomic and Economic Office Light Level Control
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed control, energy saving, ergonomics, multi-objective optimization, office landscape, predictive control, self-tuning
Light regulation systems in industrial or office buildings play an important role in minimizing the use of fossil energy resources, while providing both economic and ergonomic optimal functionality. Although industrial buildings resolve the problem of interaction or disturbance mitigation by providing constant light levels exclusively from artificial sources, office landscapes may benefit from up to a 20% decrease in costs if mixed light sources are optimized properly. In this paper, we propose a theoretical framework based on model predictive control (MPC) to resolve a multi-system with strong dynamic interactions and multi-objective cost optimization. Centralized and distributed predictive control strategies are compared on various office landscaping structures and functionality conditions. Economic and ergonomic indexes are evaluated in a scaled laboratory setting.

Analysis of the Influence of Control Strategy and Heating Loads on the Performance of Hybrid Heat Pump Systems for Residential Buildings
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: air-to-water heat pump, condensing boilers, hybrid heat pump system, primary energy saving, Simulation
Air-to-water heat pumps (HPs) are widely installed in new buildings; however, they face performance degradation with high temperature emission systems, which is typical of existing buildings, or during domestic hot water (DHW) production. Hybrid systems (HSs), composed by air-to-water HPs and gas-fired boilers, can mitigate these issues by increasing the overall system efficiency. HS performance is strictly dependent on the configuration and control management of the system itself. Moreover, the building and heating plant also have a strong influence. This study presents an overview of the application of HSs that considers both space heating (SH) and DHW production, by comparing the primary energy (PE) consumption obtained by dynamic simulations. Different climates, building typologies, and DHW withdrawal profiles are used to extend the results’ validity. Additionally, several HS control strategies were implemented and compared. The results show a PE savings ranging from 5% to 22% depe... [more]

A Study on Control Strategy for Air Conditioning of Western Exposed Rooms in Subtropical Region
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: air conditioning, control strategy, electricity consumption, energy saving
Recently, energy saving has been a major issue in all aspects. In buildings, air conditioning is one major part of power consumption. In this study, we examined the effect of an intermittent control strategy for air conditioning on energy saving in western-exposed rooms under subtropical weather conditions. The strategy applied periodic deactivation and reactivation to the air conditioners. Room temperatures, power consumption, and readings from sensors of air conditioners of two identical rooms were monitored and analyzed. For indoor temperatures, we found that the deactivation of the air conditioner for 15 min resulted in temperature peaks that were 4 to 5 °C higher than the control room. The reactivation of the air conditioner was able to cool down the room within 10 min based on the built-in sensor. However, due to the location and resolution of the sensor, the overall temperature from the four temperature and humidity sensors was still higher than the target setting, which may cau... [more]

Voltage Profiles Improvement in a Power Network with PV Energy Sources—Results of a Voltage Regulator Implementation
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: low-voltage network, photovoltaic systems, voltage control, voltage regulator
The constant increase in the number of photovoltaic (PV) energy sources in distribution networks is the cause of serious voltage problems. The networks built at least a dozen years ago are not provided for the installation of a large number of micro-sources. It happens that the previously properly functioning power networks are not able to provide to consumers power with the required parameters, after installing many PV sources. The problem relates especially to the level of voltage in the networks. This phenomenon sometimes occurs on sunny days, especially in summer. This paper discusses the use of a Low-Voltage Regulator (LVR-sys) in a selected rural distribution network with PV micro-sources. Measured voltage levels in this network, before application and after application of this regulator, are presented. The application of the regulator significantly improved voltage levels in the network and enabled these levels to be maintained within the normative range.

Non-Linear Switching Circuit for Active Voltage Rectification and Ripples Reduction of Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 7-segment display, AC-DC conversion, boost, buck-boost, piezoelectric devices, rectifier-less circuit, switching circuit, synchronous rectifier circuit
This paper describes an improved non-linear switching circuit (INLSC) for active rectification of voltage and reduction of ripples in the voltage waveform for the piezoelectric energy harvesting (PEH) system. The proposed converter controls the alternating current (AC) generated by the piezoelectric device (PD) under mechanical vibration. The proposed circuit combines the boost and buck-boost processes through a switching process, which functions in both positive and negative cycles. In addition, it controls the voltage and frequency of the load capacitor. In this process, the passive components in the circuit are energised by being short with the AC voltage using switching signals, which facilitates the active rectification of ultra-low AC voltage. Design considerations, theoretical analysis, simulations and experimental results are presented. It was shown that the circuit was able to control the switching signal and to convert low AC voltage (0.44 Vi) to high direct current (DC) volt... [more]

Modeling and Design Optimization of Energy Transfer Rate for Hybrid Energy Storage System in Electromagnetic Launch
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: charging time, electromagnetic launch, firing rate, hybrid energy storage, power supply, sequential cascade control step-up charging
The battery-pulse capacitor-based hybrid energy storage system has the advantage of high-energy density and high-power density. However, to achieve a higher firing rate of the electromagnetic launch, a shorter charging time of the pulse capacitor from the battery is needed. A new optimization model by formulating the charging time problem as a constrained optimization problem is presented. Unlike existing algorithms, the proposed model can find the globally optimal solution. The circuit parameters are optimized through the Enumeration algorithm to minimize the total charging time of the pulse capacitors from batteries. The simulation results show that the charging time of the proposed algorithm is shorter than the compared methods. Furthermore, a better solution could be obtained by canceling the constraint on the first peak of the charging current of the compared methods, which makes the circuit design more flexible for the hybrid energy storage system in the electromagnetic launch.

Development of Bus and Line Control Method for Short-Circuit Current Reduction Using Genetic Programming
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: busbar separation technique, genetic programming, line separation technique, short-circuit current, short-circuit current reduction method
In this study, genetic programming (GP) is used for optimizing bus and line separation methods to reduce the short-circuit current. Expanding power systems led to intensive electric power and more transmission lines, reducing the grid impedance. This increases the short-circuit currents that occur during failure, and it is impossible to continue developing higher-capacity breakers to accommodate such short-circuit currents. Therefore, the short-circuit currents must be managed systematically through busbar separation and line separation. However, there are countless possible bus and line separation schemes for power systems. Furthermore, to comply with power-system reliability standards, no lines or transformers should be overloaded after such controls are applied. This paper proposes the use of GP to optimize the bus and line separation methods for obtaining a solution. The solutions are limited to methods that can be implemented in real power systems, reducing the convergence probabi... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: exact feedback linearization, hybrid energy-storage system, non-linear, sliding mode control
The underlying circuit control is a key problem of the hybrid energy-storage system (HESS) in electric vehicles (EV). In this paper, a composite non-linear control strategy (CNC) is proposed for the accurate tracking current/voltage of the fully-active HESS by combining the exact feedback linearization method and the sliding mode variable structure control technology. Firstly, by analyzing the circuit characteristics of HESS, the affine non-linear model of fully-active HESS is derived. Then, a rule-based energy management strategy (EMS) is designed to generate the reference current value. Finally, the HESS is linearized by the exact feedback linearization method, and the proposed CNC strategy is developed combined with sliding mode variable structure control technology to ensure fast response, high performance, and robustness. At the same time, the stability proof based on the Lyapunov method is given. Moreover, the performance of the CNC strategy is thoroughly investigated and compare... [more]

In this paper, an attempt at the energy optimization of perfect control systems is performed. The perfect control law is the maximum-speed and maximum-accuracy procedure, which allows us to obtain a reference value on the plant’s output just after a time delay. Based on the continuous-time state-space description, the minimum-error strategy is discussed in the context of possible solutions aiming for the minimization of the control energy. The approach presented within this study is focused on the nonunique matrix inverse-originated so-called degrees of freedom being the core of perfect control scenarios. Thus, in order to obtain the desired energy-saving parameters, a genetic algorithm has been employed during the inverse model control synthesis process. Now, the innovative continuous-time procedure can be applied to a wide range of multivariable plants without any stress caused by technological limitations. March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: area control error, automatic generation control, fuzzy logic control, proportional integral derivative, simulated annealing
Electricity demand continues to rise on a daily basis. The most difficult task is ensuring that customers have access to reliable, high-quality electricity regardless of the weather. Automatic generation control (AGC) accomplishes this by keeping the target output power and frequency constant despite load fluctuations. This paper presents a hybrid PID-fuzzy controller for optimal automatic generation control in a two-area interconnected power system. A comparative analysis of the proposed controller was performed with the PID controller. The parameters of the both controllers were developed by simulated annealing (SA) techniques in order to obtain the best dynamic performance. MATLAB Simulink software was used to simulate the models. The results of the simulation for the two-area power system based on simulated annealing using the hybrid PID−fuzzy controller showed superior performance in comparison to a conventional PID controller.

Centrally Adapted Optimal Control of Multiple Electric Water Heaters
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: demand-side management, electric water heaters, peak demand reduction, smart grid
Breakthroughs in smart grid technology make it possible to deliver electricity in controlled and intelligent ways to improve energy efficiency between the user and the utility. Demand-side management strategies can reduce overall energy usage and shift consumption to reduce peak loads. Electric water heaters account for 40% of residential energy consumption. Since they are thermal storage devices, advanced control strategies can improve their efficiency. However, existing methods disregard the connection between the user and the grid. We propose a centrally adapted control model that allows for coordinated scheduling to adapt the optimal control schedule of each EWH, spreading the load into off-peak periods to ensure that the grid’s generation capacity is not exceeded. We consider two strategies for the delivery of hot water: temperature matching, and energy matching with Legionella sterilisation, and compare them to a baseline strategy where the thermostat is always switched on. Vibration Fault Diagnosis in Wind Turbines Based on Automated Feature Learning
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: convolutional neural networks, fault detection and diagnosis, gearboxes, vibration-based condition monitoring, wind energy, wind turbines
A growing number of wind turbines are equipped with vibration measurement systems to enable the close monitoring and early detection of developing fault conditions. The vibration measurements are analyzed to continuously assess the component health and prevent failures that can result in downtimes. This study focuses on gearbox monitoring but is also applicable to other subsystems. The current state-of-the-art gearbox fault diagnosis algorithms rely on statistical or machine learning methods based on fault signatures that have been defined by human analysts. This has multiple disadvantages. Defining the fault signatures by human analysts is a time-intensive process that requires highly detailed knowledge of gearbox composition. This effort needs to be repeated for every new turbine, so it does not scale well with the increasing number of monitored turbines, especially in fast-growing portfolios. Moreover, fault signatures defined by human analysts can result in biased and imprecise dec... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cable compensation, eigenvalues, field-oriented control, induction motor drive, long cable, Luenberger observer, sensorless control, speed estimation, stability analysis, submarine pump
In recent years, part of the efforts of the electric drive researcher has been focused on the study of sensorless control algorithms that allow controlling the machine without a speed measure and with ever-fewer measurement devices. This article proposes a possible solution for the submarine application of an asynchronous motor. The motor is designed to drive a petrol pump at a depth of three thousand meters. The motor is fed by an inverter that is located on an offshore platform, and they are connected through a filter and a cable that is 19.74 km long. In this application, it is not suitable to use a speed measurement device; in fact, at this depth it is important to use as few components as possible, in order to increase the system reliability. A control algorithm that only needs available electrical measures is proposed below.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: displacement efficiency, oil recovery, pore network model, residual oil, water displacement rates
An amount of oil remains in oil reservoirs even at the high water-cut stage of produced liquid from oil wells. To reveal the mechanism of displacement rates to affect the remaining oil in pore scales, a two-dimensional (2D) glass etching pore network model and real-time visual system were set up to observe the characteristics of oil distribution from water flooding and study the influence of displacement rates on oil recovery.
