March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: acceleration phase, airborne wind energy, Ampyx Power, AWES, BLLS, deceleration phase, ElektRail, landing, launch, system dynamics, UAV
This paper presents a (pre)feasibility study of the rail-based ultra-short launch and landing system ElektRail for fixed-wing airborne wind energy systems, such as Ampyx Power. The ElektRail concept promises airborne mass reductions through the elimination of landing gear as well as decreased landing stresses and ground stability requirements, opening possibilities for improved aerodynamics through a single fuselage configuration. Initially designed for operating fixed-wing drones from open fields, the ElektRail concept had to be significantly shortened for application in an airborne wind energy (AWE) context. This shorter size is required due to the much more limited space available at AWE sites, especially on offshore platforms. Hence, a performance enhancement using the integration of a bungee launching and landing system (BLLS) was designed and a system dynamics model for the launch and landing was derived. The results demonstrated the possibility for the ElektRail to be shortened... [more]

Keywords: information technology, Modelling, passenger flows, sustainable management, the trip distribution function, transport flows
Engineering human-centric urban transport systems should be carried out using information technology in forecasting traffic and passenger flows. One of the most important objects of urban transport systems’ progress is modeling patterns of transport flows and their distribution on the road network. These patterns are determined by the subjective choice of city residents of traffic routes using public and private transport. This study aimed to form a sequence of stages of modeling transport and passenger flows in human-centric urban transport systems and passenger flows in the human-centric urban intelligent transport systems and to determine the patterns of change to the gravity function of employees of municipal services. It was revealed that the trip distribution function of workers of urban service enterprises can be described by the attributes of the structure of the city, socio-economic data, and attributes characterizing the zones and its residents.

Keywords: computational efficiency, Model Predictive Control, neutralisation reactor, optimisation, robot manipulator
In nonlinear Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithms, the number of cost-function evaluations and the resulting calculation time depend on the initial solution to the nonlinear optimisation task. Since calculations must be performed fast on-line, the objective is to minimise these indicators. This work discusses twelve initialisation strategies for nonlinear MPC. In general, three categories of strategies are discussed: (a) five simple strategies, including constant and random guesses as well as the one based on the previous optimal solution, (b) three strategies that utilise a neural approximator and an inverse nonlinear static model of the process and (c) four hybrid original methods developed by the authors in which an auxiliary quadratic optimisation task is solved or an explicit MPC controller is used; in both approaches, linear or successively linearised on-line models can be used. Efficiency of all methods is thoroughly discussed for a neutralisation reactor benchmark process... [more]

Keywords: demand response, demand side management, low voltage, medium voltage, narrowband power line communications
This paper investigates the response and characteristics of the narrowband power line communication (NB-PLC) technique for the effective control of electric appliances such as smart air conditioners (SACs) for demand side management (DSM) services. The expression for temperature sensitivity by examining the influence of atmospheric temperature variations on power consumption profile of all possible types of loads, i.e., residential, commercial, and industrial loads is derived and analyzed. Comprehensive field measurements on these power consumers are carried out in Lahore, Pakistan. The responses of low voltage channels, medium voltage channels, and transformer bridge for a 3−500 kHz NB-PLC frequency range are presented for DSM services. The master control room transmits control commands for the thermostat settings of SACs over power lines, crossing the transformer bridge to reach the SACs of power consumers by using communication protocol smart energy profile 1.0. Keywords: 2-simplex, autonomous object, buck converter, cognitive graphics, control, go-around loop, I-V curve, maximum power point, open circuit, power supply, short circuit, simulator, solar panel
Boosted interest in highly efficient power supplies based on renewables requires involving simulators during both the designing stage and the testing one. It is especially relevant for the power supplies that operate in the harsh environmental conditions of northern territories and alike. Modern solar panels based on polycrystalline Si and GaAs possess relatively high efficiency and energy output. To save designing time and cost, system developers use simulators for the solar panels coupled with the power converters that stabilize the output parameters and ensure the proper output power quality to supply autonomous objects: namely, private houses, small-power (up to 10 kW) industrial buildings, submersible pumps, and other equipment. It is crucial for the simulator to provide a valid solar panel I-V curve in various modes and under different ambient conditions: namely, the consumed power rating, temperature, solar irradiation, etc. This paper considers a solar panel simulator topology... Asymmetric Neutral Point Diode Clamped Topology with Reduced Component Count for Switched Reluctance Machine Drive
Pieter Antonie Scholtz, Michael Njoroge Gitau
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) converter, Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), switched reluctance motor (SRM)
The Reduced Asymmetric Neutral Point Clamped converter topology for unipolar driven, multiphase switched reluctance machines is proposed in this paper. This topology shares similarities with the conventional NPC and Asymmetric-NPC topologies, however it is unique in that the components for the capacitor string and outer semiconductor switches are shared among all the phases for a reduced component count. Some switching state combinations are not possible during commutation overlap between motor phases, resulting in minor torque transients during regenerative braking. A custom modulation scheme is implemented with fixed frequency, phase-shifted carrier waveforms that allow for automatic balancing of the neutral point voltage and interleaved switching of the semiconductor switches. A simple torque observer control architecture is used with minor adjustments for arbitrating torque contribution priorities between phases during handover.

This paper discusses the proper selection and interpretation of aggregated control performance indices values mirroring the quality of electrical energy generation by a turbine-generator set cooperating with a power system. Typically, a set of basic/classical and individual indices is used in energy engineering to ensure the mirroring feature and is related to voltage, frequency and active or reactive power deviations from their nominal values desired in the power system. In this paper, aggregated indices based on the sum of weighted integral indices are proposed, verified and built based on the well-known indices originating from control theory. These include an integral of the squared error (ISE) and an integral of the squared error multiplied by time (ITSE), applicable whenever an in-depth analysis and evaluation of various control strategies of the generation system is to be performed. In the reported research, the computer simulation tests verified their effectiveness in assessing... [more]
Calculation of the Strength of Vortex Currents Induced by Vortex Generators on Flat Plates and the Evaluation of Their Performance
Zhaohuang Zhang, Weiwei Li
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Biot–Savart theorem, effect of boundary layer control, vortex generators, vortex strength
Vortex generators are used to overturn the momentum of the flow in the boundary layer, thereby preventing flow separation, and are broadly used in aviation, wind power, heat exchange, and different fields. It has been determined that the capability of an eddy current generator to manipulate the boundary layer is proportional to the intensity of the vortex strength it excites. Although the mathematical notion of vortex strength is very well defined, there are difficulties in figuring out vortex strength in applications. This article proposes a calculation method based on confidence intervals and contour eddy current intensity. Meanwhile, the contemporary overall performance evaluation of vortex generators is frequently obtained in a roundabout way through their consequences on feature factors (e.g., lift coefficients, etc.), and techniques for the direct assessment of a vortex generator’s overall performance are no longer available. To address this situation, the article derives the per... [more]

Keywords: horizontal well, oil displacement, profile control, remaining oil saturation, vertical well, well pattern
The reservoir heterogeneity of Q oilfield is more severe after long-term water injection development, and water flooding is ineffective. In this study, the combined technologies of profile control, profile control and flooding, and oil displacement were proposed to improve the water flooding development effect. Then, the influence of the well pattern type on the remaining oil distribution, after development, was investigated. Cr3+ polymer gel, which has an optimal gel-forming effect, was used as the profile control agent. Moreover, the entire molecular structure had a “network” structure. A polymer microsphere was used as a profile control and flooding agent, which showed a good hydration expansion capacity. The initial particle size distribution had a range of 7.2−11.1 μm, and the expansion multiple was 4.35−5.64 after 7 days. The surfactant was an oil displacement agent, and the interfacial tension was approximately 5.08−5.11 × 10−1 mN/m. After the “profile control + profile control... [more]

Keywords: power oscillation damping, power system stabilizer, wide-area power oscillation damping
To allow the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources into the grid, VSC-HVDC is commonly utilized. However, with greater integration, several power system stability issues arise. In this study, we examined the small-signal rotor angle stability of a model of the Australian power system with embedded VSC-based HVDC links. A simplified model of the Australian power network was used to connect the potential geothermal resources in the region of Innamincka using a 1100 km HVDC link. We observed that the introduction of the new source of geothermal power generation had an adverse impact on the damping performance of the system. Therefore, two forms of stabilization are examined here: (i) generator power system stabilizers (PSS) fitted to the synchronous machines, which are used to convert geothermal energy to electrical power; and (ii) power oscillation damping controllers (PODs) fitted to the VSC-HVDC link. In the case of the PODs, two types of stabilizing input signals are con... [more]

Commercial solutions in the area of data center cooling available on the market are universal solutions that use dedicated control methods and are to able function properly in a wide range of working conditions. The functional limitations resulting in their application were our motivation for developing our own system architecture and a dedicated control algorithm. Historical data from an operating cooling system were analyzed. On that basis, a rule-based controller was developed, the purpose of which is to correctly switch between operating modes. The time constants of the automation actuators and the dynamics of the changes that occur in the cooling process were identified. The control strategy was experimentally validated throughout 2017. The efficacy of the second solution and the effectiveness of the control algorithm throughout the calendar year were demonstrated. Our solution allows individual control of each element of the cooling system. This enabled the extension of the opera... [more]

Keywords: hierarchical control strategy, hydrogen system, hydrogen utilization, pressure response characteristics, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is known as one of the most promising energy sources for electric vehicles. A hydrogen system is required to provide hydrogen to the stack in time to meet the flow and pressure requirements according to the power requirements. In this study, a 1-D model of a hydrogen system, including the fuel cell stack, was established. Two modes, one with and one without a proportion integration differentiation (PID) control strategy, were applied to analyze the pressure characteristics and performance of the PEMFC. The results showed that the established model could be well verified with experimental data. The anode pressure fluctuation with a PID control strategy was more stable, which reduced the damage to the fuel cell stack caused by sudden changes of anode pressure. In addition, the performance of the stack with the PID control mode was slightly improved. There was an inflection point for hydrogen utilization; the hydrogen utilization rate was highe... [more]

Keywords: controlling, embedded systems, LED lighting, lighting systems, photometric sensor, phototransistor
In the paper, an embedded system dedicated to control lighting of the workplace is proposed. The construction of the considered lighting system with a power LED (Light Emitting Diode) and the idea of its control are presented. Some results of investigations of the constructed lighting system, particularly those of the measurements of its optical and electrical parameters, are shown and discussed. The presented results show that by using this system, it is possible to obtain a high value of lighting uniformity in the workplace at different values of the main lighting in the room. The control is fast, and none of the reaction times achieved during the tests exceeded even 1 s while ensuring a smooth change. Although the layout and algorithms used are simple, it can be considered an advantage as they do not introduce unnecessary complexity while meeting all the requirements of standards. A discussion of the obtained results is given, particularly in the range of energy savings.

This paper deals with the analysis of the operating conditions of traction drives of the electric locomotives with asynchronous traction motors. The process of change of the catenary system voltage was found to have a stochastic character. The method of current controller synthesis based on the Wiener−Hopf equation was proposed to enable efficient performance of the traction drive control system under the condition of the stochastic nature of the catenary system voltage and the presence of interferences, when measuring the stator current values of the tractor motor. Performance simulation of the proposed current controller and the current controller used in the existing vector control systems of the traction drives used in the electric locomotives was implemented. The results of the performance simulation of the proposed current controller were compared with the performance of the current controller in existing vector control systems of the traction drives. Keywords: concentric annular heat pipe, isothermal performance, metering, potassium, temperature calibration
For high-precision thermocouple calibration, the uniformity of the temperature field provided by the metal temperature equalizing block is low, and the structure of the gas-controlled heat pipe is complex. In order to improve the thermocouple calibration equipment, heat pipe technology can be used to provide the stability and uniformity of the temperature field of the equipment. The concentric annular heat pipe (CAHP) is completely placed in the heating furnace to provide a uniform temperature field, and limited studies consider this heating mode for alkali metal CAHPs. Specifically, no information is available on the effect of heating temperatures on the temperature distribution of the internal pipe of potassium CAHP. In this study, a temperature comparison based on potassium CAHP for high-precision thermocouple calibration was manufactured. The temperature stability and temperature uniformity of CAHP were measured, and the effects of heating temperature and heating mode on the isothe... [more]

Keywords: leakage reactance, phase shifting transformer, power flow control, transmission line
With the development of power systems, the power flow problem of transmission line is becoming more and more prominent. This paper presents a power flow regulation method based on phase shifting transformer (PST). Firstly, the working principle and performance of PST are analyzed. Then, the simulation model of BPA multi node system is established. PST access reduces the line imbalance to less than 8%. On this basis, considering the influence of saturation effect and leakage reactance, a PST suitable for 220 kV power grid is designed. Three different working conditions are simulated by PSCAD software. Under normal working conditions and N-1 conditions, PST can increase the transmission limit of the ring network section by more than 20%. When a short-circuit fault occurs, PST can also suppress the fault current. For 220 kV practical projects, unified power flow controller (UPFC) has faster response speed and stronger performance, but PST is more economical and reliable, and the equipment... [more]

Thus, the sustainability of the cities and villages, located in such regions, is promoted. A novel design proposing a poly-tilted segmented panel (PTSP) is proposed as an original techno-logical solution enabling the control of the SRRR. Design technical details are clearly explained. The proposed design presents a cheap, simple and effective alternative to conventional sun tracking systems. The SRRR on the proposed PTSP is mathematically modeled. March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy saving, Genetic Algorithm, Model Predictive Control, multi-objective optimization, thermal comfort
To save energy consumed by a building, utilizing optimal predictive control with model predictive control (MPC) makes the most of energy storage systems (ESSs) to reduce the electrical energy consumption of peak and heavy loads. This study evaluated MPC applicability in a multi-zone commercial building using the EnergyPlus model and conducted multi-objective optimization of thermal comfort and energy savings. As a result of the simulation, optimal ESS charging scenarios responded to the fluctuating electricity pricing system, and changing the peak load time reduced the electricity bill of the grid by 55% compared to the existing operating method. At the same time, room temperatures stayed within the thermal comfort range, and the Pareto curve showed a proper balance between energy saving and thermal comfort. Especially, the proposed method with a white model is applicable for MPC applications in commercial buildings, as it gave optimal solutions within the target time interval.

This paper presents a comparative study among switching control strategies for Buck−Boost converters, taking into account essential aspects in practical implementations, as the switching frequency variation concerning different output voltages and the responses in the transient and steady-states. More specifically, we have considered three switching strategies of min-type, where two of them permit high switching frequencies, while the other considers a limited frequency control strategy. Moreover, we have generalized the control techniques available in the literature to make them able to operate under changes in the equilibrium points without the need for a redesign. A conventional PI controller based on pulse-width modulation (PWM) is adopted for comparison purposes. In contrast to PWM-based control, which operates in the maximum switching frequency, the min-type strategies present variation in the switching frequency that depends on the operation point and may lead to a power loss re... Keywords: demagnetization fault detection and location, fault sample database, Pearson correlation coefficient, PMSM, stator branch current
To address such challenges as an uncertain number of demagnetization poles of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) and cases in which the fault cannot be located, this paper proposes a fault identification and location methodology based on the analysis of the motor stator current. First, the influence of the irreversible demagnetization of permanent magnets on the analytical model of the back electromotive force (Back-EMF) of the rotor in a single motor stator slot is analyzed. Moreover, considering the topology of the motor, the influence of the demagnetization fault on the stator phase current and branch current is analyzed. Since the stator phase currents cannot diagnose the partial demagnetization faults of PMSM with some topological structures, the stator branch current is selected as the signal for the identification and localization of the demagnetization fault. Secondly, the demagnetization fault diagnosis and mode recognition of the motor are carried out through the a... [more]

Keywords: coordinated control, DC microgrid, droop control, energy management, fuzzy logic algorithm, SOC balancing
In order to achieve a state-of-charge (SOC) balance among multiple energy storage units (MESUs) in an islanded DC microgrid, a SOC balancing and coordinated control strategy based on the adaptive droop coefficient algorithm for MESUs is proposed. When the SOC deviation is significant, the droop coefficient for an energy storage unit (ESU) with a higher (or lower) SOC is set to a minimum value when discharging (or charging). The ESU with the higher (or lower) SOC is controlled to discharge (or charge) with the rated power, while the other ESU compensates for the remaining power when the demanded discharging (or charging) power is greater than the rated power of the individual ESU. Otherwise, when the demanded discharging (or charging) power is lower than the rated power of either ESU, the ESU with the higher (or lower) SOC releases (or absorbs) almost all the required power while the other ESU barely absorbs or releases power, thus quickly realizing SOC balancing. When the SOC deviation... [more]

Keywords: DC-link voltage regulation, permanent magnet vernier generator (PMVG), wind energy conversion system (WECS)
This study presents an effective control strategy for regulating the DC-link voltage in a variable-speed direct-driven (DD) wind energy conversion system (WECS) using a permanent magnet vernier generator (PMVG). To do this, at first, the overall system is configured using back-to-back (BTB) voltage source converters, and the whole system’s dynamical equations are modeled and presented. Following that, a non-linear sliding mode control strategy is introduced as the grid-side converter’s DC-link voltage controller to improve the dynamic performance of the PMVG system and achieve the stable power transfer with the grid. To accomplish this, a proportional and integral (PI)-based sliding surface is designed, and a hybrid reaching law is proposed to suppress chattering and deliver a faster response of DC-link voltage with negligible steady-state tracking error. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control strategy are validated through comparisons with existing methods... [more]
Research on Fault-Tolerant Operation Strategy of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with Common DC Bus Open Winding Phase-Breaking Fault

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decoupled modulation, fault-tolerant control, open winding permanent magnet synchronous motor, phase break fault, zero-sequence current
In some key areas, fault-tolerant control is usually needed in order to enable the motor to operate continuously in fault mode. Given that it is difficult to detect the zero-sequence current of the open winding permanent magnet synchronous motor after the phase break fault occurs, the traditional zero-sequence current suppression strategy is no longer applicable after the phase break fault occurs. Therefore, a zero-sequence current suppression strategy for a common DC bus under a phase break fault is proposed in this paper. By establishing the mathematical model between the current component in the synchronous coordinate system and the current component and the zero-sequence current in the static coordinate system, the relationship between the non-fault phase current and the zero-sequence current in the open phase fault is analyzed. A method of suppressing the zero-sequence current by using proportional integral double resonance in a zero-sequence current control loop is proposed. In a... [more]
