March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automatic speed regulator, automatic voltage regulator, cyber-physical power supply systems, distributed generation plant, group regulation, Modelling, predictive control algorithms, synchronous generator
The widespread use of distributed generation (DG) plants in cyber-physical power supply systems (CPPSS) requires solving the complex problem of setting their regulators. The presented study aimed to determine the performance of the group predictive voltage and frequency regulators of DG plants in CPPSS. These studies were conducted in the MatLab environment on the CPPSS models with gas turbine units and with a small-scale hydroelectric power plant. The proposed method for tuning group predictive regulators makes it possible to improve the quality control indices. The research has established that with an additional load connected, the maximum voltage dip is reduced by a factor of 3.5 compared to conventional control regulators. In addition, the time of a transient process for the generator rotor speed is decreased by a factor of 3. In the case of a short-term short circuit, predictive regulators can reduce the time of the transient process by a factor of 1.5 and the overshoot by more t... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current source converter, mathematical model, paralleled operation, suppression of circulating current, virtual impedance control
The circulating current is one of the important issues for parallel converters. It affects the system stable operation and degrades the power quality. In order to reduce the circulating current of the parallel converter and reduce the harmonic pollution to the power grid, a new circulating current suppression strategy is proposed for the parallel current source converter without any communication line. This strategy is able to realize the current sharing between parallel modules by changing the external characteristics of the parallel modules to thus suppress the circulating current among the parallel current source converters. The proposed control strategy adopts DC-side droop control and AC-side virtual impedance control. The DC-side droop control is used to generate the reference voltage of each parallel module, while the AC-side virtual impedance is used to the circulating current suppression. We performed a time domain test of the parallel converter, and the results show that the... [more]
Effective Volt/var Control for Low Voltage Grids with Bulk Loads
Daniel-Leon Schultis
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bulk load, CP_Q-Autarky, electric vehicle charger, energy community, low voltage grid, photovoltaic, Volt/var control, X(U) local control
This paper investigates the voltage and reactive power control problem in low voltage grids with connected prosumers and bulk loads. The X(U) local control, which maintains the voltage at the feeders’ ends within a predefined band, and its combination with Q-Autarkic customer plants are the most effective and reliable strategies in grids with high prosumer share. However, these strategies may need adaptations to guarantee voltage limit compliance when bulk loads, such as electric vehicle parking garages and community-owned photovoltaic systems, are connected to the low voltage feeders. This paper extends the X(U) local control concept to involve bulk loads in Volt/var control and investigates the resulting load flows in different real low voltage grids. The results show that the extended control arrangement reliably removes all voltage limit violations by deteriorating the effectiveness of the original X(U) local control arrangement: reactive power flows and equipment loading within th... The Circulating Current Reduction Control Method for Asynchronous Carrier Phases of Parallel Connected Inverters
Seung-Yong Lee, Jae-Jung Jung
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: asynchronous carrier, circulating current, high power conversion system, parallel inverters, power quality
Parallel operation of inverters is one of the most effective and representative ways to increase system capacity. However, zero-sequence circulating currents occur due to the practical deviations of components constituting individual inverters in case of parallel connected inverters in which a common direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC) bus is shared. In particular, circulating currents of the high-frequency component as well as those of the low-frequency component are generated due to the asynchronization of the carriers of individual inverters. In order to suppress the circulating currents as such, the phases of the carriers should be shifted as much as the phase errors between the carriers to compensate for the phase errors. A difficulty in this phase compensation control is that when there are several pulse-width modulation (PWM) carriers, it is impossible to identify the phase of each carrier. In this paper, to overcome the problem, a method to specify the position of o... [more]

Keywords: flux-weakening (FW) operation, hybrid excitation (HE), interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor, magnetic analysis, per-unit system, permanent magnet (PM) machines, permanent magnet (PM) motor control
This paper deals with motor design aspects and control strategies for the flux-weakening (FW) operation of synchronous motors. The theory of FW is described by taking into account different control schemes. The advantages and drawbacks of each one are discussed, as well. Moreover, some motor design considerations for achieving an effective FW operation are illustrated for permanent magnet (PM), wound rotor (WR) and reluctance (REL) synchronous machines, using the per unit approach. The distinguishing characteristic of this review provides two-fold attention on both machine design and control strategies obtained by several collaborations with industrial and commercial companies.
Machine Learning-Enhanced Play Fairway Analysis for Uncertainty Characterization and Decision Support in Geothermal Exploration
R. Chadwick Holmes, Aimé Fournier
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: exploration, geothermal, Machine Learning, play fairway analysis, uncertainty
Geothermal exploration has traditionally relied on geological, geochemical, or geophysical surveys for evidence of adequate enthalpy, fluids, and permeability in the subsurface prior to drilling. The recent adoption of play fairway analysis (PFA), a method used in oil and gas exploration, has progressed to include machine learning (ML) for predicting geothermal drill site favorability. This study introduces a novel approach that extends ML PFA predictions with uncertainty characterization. Four ML algorithms—logistic regression, a decision tree, a gradient-boosted forest, and a neural network—are used to evaluate the subsurface enthalpy resource potential for conventional or EGS prospecting. Normalized Shannon entropy is calculated to assess three spatially variable sources of uncertainty in the analysis: model representation, model parameterization, and feature interpolation. When applied to southwest New Mexico, this approach reveals consistent enthalpy trends embedded in a high-dime... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3D laser scanning, 3D test device, rock formations, surface subsidence law, surface subsidence process
The main functions of a three-dimensional test device for simulating rock formations and surface movement affected by underground coal mining were described in detail, and a series of similar related tests were carried out. The device consisted of an outer frame, a pressurization unit, a pulling unit, and a coal seam simulation portion. Using this test device, supported by monitoring methods such as the three-dimensional laser scanner method, a model test study on the surface subsidence characteristics caused by coal seam mining was carried out. Combined with the field measurements, the transfer law of surface subsidence caused by coal seam mining was revealed, and the whole surface subsidence response process was analyzed. The experimental results show that the subsidence caused by mining disturbances below the coal seam accounts for 79.3% of the total subsidence, which is the dominant factor of the total surface subsidence. After long-term surface observations, surface subsidence can... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fast frequency response, grid-following control, grid-forming control, virtual synchronous machine control, wind power integration
Fast frequency response from wind turbines and plants has been playing an increasingly important role in our modern power system, which has a large share of wind energy integration. Frequency control from grid-following wind turbines and plants has been extensively investigated in the literature, whereas grid-forming frequency control methods have aroused people’s attention in recent years, with relatively little comparison available. This paper provides such a comparison, illustrating the differences between the two methods of providing frequency support in a power system. The comparison shows the superiority of grid-forming frequency control methods over grid-following ones, and gives a glance into power system frequency stability in the transition from grid-following to grid-forming frequency support supplied by wind power. The results are elaborated in a benchmark WSCC 9-bus system, which features detailed electromagnetic transient modeling of the components from a single converter... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active front steering (AFS), anti-lock braking system (ABS), coordinated control, distributed drive electric vehicle, heterogeneous multi-agent
A vehicle with a four-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) has poor safety and stability when braking on a low-adhesion road or off-road. In view of this situation, this paper proposes a multi-objective optimization coordinated control method for ABS and AFS based on multi-agent model predictive control (MPC). Firstly, the single-wheel control method is adopted to establish the single-wheel equation based on the slip rate and the stability equation of the centroid yaw based on AFS. The four wheels and the centroid are regarded as agents. The mathematical model of distributed drive electric vehicles based on graph theory and the coordinated control of AFS and ABS is established to reduce the dimension of the model. Secondly, on the basis of the multi-agent theory, an integrated coordinated control method for AFS and ABS based on distributed model predictive control (DMPC) is proposed to realize the ideal values of the vehicle’s slip rate, yaw rate, and sideslip angle, and improve the... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy principle, energy-absorbing dampers, large deformation control, mountain tunnel, soft rock
The commonly used strength design concept of tunnel support structures is inadequate to address the large deformation of soft rock. This study designed a series of energy-absorbing dampers (EDs) with low stiffness and high deformation capacity based on the energy principle. The ED was directly installed on the steel arch, which used its compression deformation to release the surrounding rock pressure and absorb the surrounding rock deformation to ensure the stability of the initial support structure. A compression test analyzed the ED’s mechanical properties, optimizing the structural parameters. The preliminary test results showed that the arc energy-absorbing damper’s (AED-I) peak strength (15.33 Mpa) was lower than the standard compressive strength of C25 shotcrete, with a safety factor of 1.63. The AED-I’s maximum compression ratio was 73.20%. To further improve the AED-I’s reliability and ability to absorb the deformation of surrounding rock, the bending radius of the AED-I’s ener... The study aimed to present the features of a 2-DOF vibration reduction system (VRS) equipped with a linear electrodynamic motor in passive, semi-active and active mode. At first, the VRS model was formulated. Then, simulation tests of the VRS were conducted to distinguish its most advantageous features in each mode and to analyze dynamic performance and energy consumption. Next, the VRS was experimentally tested to evaluate its effectiveness in each mode for the assumed excitations and to compare tests results against simulation data. In active mode, a sliding mode algorithm was employed for motor control, while in semi-active mode, the equivalent damping coefficient analysis was used.

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cooling performance, hot streak, insulation performance, thermal barrier coatings
The influence of the HS (hot streak) and unsteady wake on the overall cooling performance of a rotor blade was studied in this paper. The results show that: (1) Both the magnitude and temperature of the HS gradually drops down as it passes downstream of the vane passage. (2) Within one stator period, the highest cooling performance of the blade can be observed at the initial time points, when the LE (leading edge) of the blade turns towards the trailing edge of the vane. (3) The lowest cooling performance of the blade can be observed at the time point 0.5 T, when the LE of the blade turns towards the center of the vane passage. (4) Surface temperatures in areas with unfavorable local heat flow are usually higher than the temperature of the coolant. The additional TBCs may exert adverse effects on heat dissipation from the substrate metal to the mainstream, which has a negative effect on the improvement of the overall cooling effectiveness of the coated blade. (5) Within a stator period... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: extended Kalman filter, industrial robot control, inverse kinematic, sliding mode fuzzy control
This paper presents a sliding mode fuzzy control approach for industrial robots at their static and near static speed (linear velocities less than 5 cm/s). The extended Kalman filter with its covariance resetting is used to translate the coordinates from Cartesian to joint angle space. The translated joint angles are then used as a reference signal to control the industrial robot dynamics using a sliding mode fuzzy controller. The stability and robustness of the proposed controller is proven using an appropriate Lyapunov function in the presence of parameter uncertainty and unknown dynamic friction. The proposed controller is simulated on a 6-DOF industrial robot, namely the Universal Robot-UR5, considering the maximum allowable joint torques. It is observed that the proposed controller can successfully control UR5 under uncertainties in terms of unknown dynamic friction and parameter uncertainties. The tracking performance of the proposed controller is compared with that of the slidin... [more]

Keywords: hydraulic drive, hydrostatic transmission, hydrostatic transmission start up
This paper concerns the start-up process of a hydrostatic transmission with a fixed displacement pump, with particular emphasis on dynamic surplus pressure. A numerically controlled transmission using a proportional directional valve was analysed by simulation and experimental verification. The transmission is controlled by the throttle method, and the variable resistance is the throttling gap of the proportional spool valve. A mathematical description of the gear start-up process was obtained using a lumped-parameters model based on ordinary differential equations. The proportional spool valve was described using a modified model, which significantly improved the performance of the model in the closed-loop control process. After assuming the initial conditions and parameterization of the equation coefficients, a simulation of the transition start-up was performed in the MATLAB−Simulink environment. Simulations and experimental studies were carried out for control signals of various sh... [more]

As a form of energy storage with high power and efficiency, a flywheel energy storage system performs well in the primary frequency modulation of a power grid. In this study, a three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor was used as the drive motor of the system, and a simulation study on the control strategy of a flywheel energy storage system was conducted based on the primary frequency modulation of wind power. Keywords: electrical analysis, electrical faults, fault detection performance, partial shading, soiling, solar PV system, thermography
This paper compares multiple techniques to detect suboptimal conditions in the PV system. Detection of suboptimal conditions in the PV system is required to achieve optimal photovoltaic (PV) systems. Therefore, maintenance managers need to choose the most suitable techniques objectively. However, there is a lack of objective information comparing the effectiveness of the methods. This article calculates and compares the effectiveness of Infrared thermography (IRT), visual inspection (VI), and electrical analysis (EA) in detecting soiling, partial shadows, and electrical faults experimentally. The results showed that the VI was the best at detecting soiling and partial shading with 100% of effectiveness. IRT and EA had an effectiveness of 78% and 73%, respectively, detecting the three types of conditions under study. It was not possible to achieve maximum detection using only one of the techniques, but that VI must be combined with IR or EA. This research represents a significant contri... [more]

Keywords: arc-fault detection method, characteristic frequency, electromagnetic radiation, loop antenna, operating arc
Arc fault is an important cause of electrical fire. At present, the arc-fault detection method based on current and voltage is vulnerable to the influence of a nonlinear load and switching operation in the line, resulting in misjudgment and omission. Therefore, an arc-fault detection method based on the characteristics of electromagnetic radiation is proposed. A low-voltage AC series arc-fault simulation platform is built, and a simple annular antenna is designed to receive an electromagnetic radiation signal. It is proved by experiments that electromagnetic radiation signals have similar characteristic frequencies (13.6−14.2 MHz) under different currents, loads, arc positions and arc occurrence times. At the same time, the electromagnetic radiation signal of a low-voltage AC series arc and normal switching operations are compared. The pulse oscillation time of the radiation signals of the operating arc (2 μs) is far shorter than that of the faulty arc (4 μs), and the characteristic fr... [more]

Keywords: grid following, grid forming, modular multilevel converter (MMC), single cell per arm
Modular multilevel converters (MMC) can be used in several applications, especially (but not only) in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and STATCOM. In order to develop experimental scaled-down test benches for lab validation, several projects have developed MMCs with a limited number of cells, but they need to use pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques to achieve acceptable power quality (because nearest level modulation (NLM), common in HVDC applications with hundreds of levels, cannot achieve sufficient power quality unless the number of cells is high enough). The present paper proposes a new concept which is based on designing arms with a single cell. This allows to have the simplest possible converter that maintains the structure of an MMC. While all the inner controllers of large-scale HVDC MMCs are included, the only remarkable difference is that PWM is used and NLM cannot be implemented. As this is also a limitation for other low voltage MMC, the proposed concept is suggested... [more]
