A Control Strategy to Avoid Drop and Inrush Currents during Transient Phases in a Multi-Transmitters DIPT System
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Dynamic Inductive Power Transfer, frequency control, series-series compensation network, state machine, voltage copying
Electrical Vehicles (EVs) have gained popularity in recent years in the automotive field. They are seen as a way to reduce the CO2 footprint of vehicles. Although EVs have witnessed significant advancement in recent years, they still have two major setbacks: limited autonomy and long recharging time. Dynamic Inductive Power Transfer (DIPT) systems permit charging EVs while driving, provide unlimited autonomy, and eliminate stationary charging time and lower battery dependency. Multiple transmitters are required to achieve DIPT; thus, dealing with transient phases is essential because every time a receiver crosses over from one transmitter to another, it experiences a new transient phase. This article presents a novel control strategy for multi-transmitter DIPT systems that ensures a continuous and stable power transfer to a moving EV. The proposed control strategy eliminates drop and inrush currents during transient phases. The control integrates a soft start feature and a degraded ope... [more]

Pore Connectivity Characteristics and Controlling Factors for Black Shales in the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation, Southeastern Sichuan Basin, China
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: marine shale, pore connectivity, pore size distribution, Sichuan Basin, Wufeng–Longmaxi Formation
Investigations into the connectivity and complexity of pore systems in shales are essential for understanding the flow of shale gas and the capacities of the associated reservoirs. In the present study, eight shale samples from the Wufeng-Longmaxi (WF-LMX) Formation that were collected from Well Yucan-6 in the southeast of the Sichuan Basin were analyzed for microstructural, pore network, and pore connectivity characteristics. The measurement results of low-pressure nitrogen adsorption illustrated that all shale samples contain micropores, mesopores, and macropores. Micropores and mesopores account for a high proportion of the total pores, and the dominant pore throat size is in the range of 2−6 nm. High-pressure mercury injection tests reveal that the porosity, total pore volume, and total specific surface area of pores for samples from the WF Formation are higher than those for samples from the LMX Formation. In spontaneous absorption experiments, the slopes of the absorption curves... [more]

Integrated Three-Level Dual-Phase Inverter
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: F-type inverter, multilevel inverter, sinusoidal pulse-width modulation, total harmonic distortion
In view of reducing the number of inverter legs that provide dual-phase, three-level output voltages (as may be needed in an uninterruptible power supply), and that also provide a wide range of output frequencies (as needed in an advanced motor drive system with wide speed ranges), a three-level, dual-phase inverter topology is presented in this paper. Its three-level attribute was based on the F-type inverter topological concept, and its dual-output feature was based on the common representation of the inverter-leg concept. The proposed inverter could deliver single- and three-phase voltages to corresponding one- and three-phase loads, in common or different frequency modes of operation. A boundary between these modes of operation was established for the proposed inverter. An additional possibility of either operation in the one-phase or the three-phase system was offered by the inverter configuration. A modified carrier-based sinusoidal pulse-width modulation scheme is presented for... [more]

Single Current Feedback Control Strategy of an LCL Grid-Connected Inverter Based on GI-ESO and Delay Compensation
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: delay compensation, GI-ESO, LCL grid-connected inverter, LESO, single current feedback
This paper presents a new control structure to improve the performance of LCL grid-connected inverters. First, the conventional linear extended state observer (LESO) has difficulty rejecting periodic disturbances, so the proposed method adds an internal model of disturbances into LESO to enhance the harmonic suppression ability. Second, the phase lag caused by the digital delay and LCL resonance make it difficult to ensure the stability of the system. In this paper, the proposed method adds phase compensation for the ESO loop, thus enlarging the stability region of the system with no additional sensors being required. Third, the design of the controller parameters is simplified and the frequency performance analysis of the system is given. Finally, the simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method has good harmonic suppression capability and robust stability.

Realistic Simulation of Sensor/Actuator Faults for a Dependability Evaluation of Demand-Controlled Ventilation and Heating Systems
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault injection, fault model, fault scenario generation, finite-state machine, HVAC systems, Stateflow
In the development of fault-tolerant systems, simulation is a common technique used to obtain insights into performance and dependability because it saves time and avoids the risks of testing the behavior of real-world systems in the presence of faults. Fault injection in a simulation offers a high controllability and observability, and thus is ideal for an early dependability analysis and fault-tolerance evaluation. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in critical infrastructures, such as airports and hospitals, are safety-relevant systems, which not only determine energy consumption, system efficiency, and occupancy comfort but also play an essential role in emergency scenarios (e.g., fires, biological hazards). Hence, fault injection serves as a practical and essential solution to assess dependability in different fault scenarios of HVAC systems. Hence, in this paper, we present a simulation-based fault injection framework with a combination of two techniques, s... [more]

A Novel Structure of Electromagnetic Lead Screw for Wave Energy Converter
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: helical magnetic field, magnetic lead screw, permanent magnet, wave energy converter
A magnetic lead screw (MLS) is a device that can help a wave energy converter (WEC) to transform the low-speed linear wave motion into high-speed rotary motion with no frictional contact. However, the dynamic performance of the MLS is insufficient because only the permanent magnet (PM) is used to couple the magnetic field between the rotor and mover. To improve the dynamic performance of the MLS, a novel structure of an electromagnetic lead screw (EMLS) for the application of a WEC is proposed in this paper. In the proposed EMLS, a helical-shaped PM is mounted on the inner side of the rotor, which is as same as the traditional MLS. However, helical-shaped slots are grooved on the surface of the mover, and two-phase helical-shaped AC winding is placed in these slots to generate the controlled helical-shaped magnetic field. In this paper, the topology and the operating theory are introduced firstly. Then, the three- and its corresponding two-dimensional axis-symmetric finite element anal... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: depositional microfacies, fractal dimension, pore throat characteristics, r35, sandstone reservoir
The Neogene Guantao Formation Reservoir in the PLOilfield is a unconsolidated sandstone with high porosity and high permeability. The reservoir diagenesis is weak and dominated by compaction diagenesis. At present, insufficient research into the relationship between the pore characteristics and sedimentary microfacies of shallow delta sandstone reservoirs restricts the prediction of favorable reservoir distribution. This article takes the unconsolidated sandstone reservoir of the Guantao Formation as the research object and analyzes the potential coupling relationship between pore characteristics and sedimentary microfacies. In this study, seven typical sedimentary microfacies were identified and the microscopic characteristics of different sedimentary microfacies reservoirs are described. The results show that the pore structure of various sedimentary microfacies is comprehensively influenced by the sedimentary rock texture, siliceous minerals, and clay mineral distribution. Recent Techniques Used in Home Energy Management Systems: A Review
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: heuristics, home energy management system, metaheuristics, MILP, Model Predictive Control
Power systems are going through a transition period. Consumers want more active participation in electric system management, namely assuming the role of producers−consumers, prosumers in short. The prosumers’ energy production is heavily based on renewable energy sources, which, besides recognized environmental benefits, entails energy management challenges. For instance, energy consumption of appliances in a home can lead to misleading patterns. Another challenge is related to energy costs since inefficient systems or unbalanced energy control may represent economic loss to the prosumer. The so-called home energy management systems (HEMS) emerge as a solution. When well-designed HEMS allow prosumers to reach higher levels of energy management, this ensures optimal management of assets and appliances. This paper aims to present a comprehensive systematic review of the literature on optimization techniques recently used in the development of HEMS, also taking into account the key factor... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: field current, outer-rotor switched reluctance motor (OSRM), speed control, torque ripple, wheel hub motors
Featured in low-speed and high-torque operation, outer-rotor switched reluctance motors (OSRMs) have the potential to be widely deployed in low-speed commuter and logistics vehicle applications. In this paper, a five-phase OSRM and the control method featuring torque ripple reduction has been proposed, which can be applied as the wheel hub motor in the electric vehicles. The simulation was carried out to analyze the OSRM operation. The electromagnetic characteristics of single-phase and two-phase hybrid excitation mode, as well as step current excitation mode, were compared and analyzed. To solve the problem of the large torque ripple of OSRMs under traditional excitation modes, the torque ripple suppression method based on step current excitation was also studied. The experiment design, including motor start-up control, speed control, and torque ripple reduction, are presented to verify the system torque ripple mitigation method.

Thermal Stratification and Temperature Variation in Horizontal Electric Water Heaters: A Characterisation Platform
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electric water heaters, energy characterisation, energy usage, thermal stratification, thermostat control
Electric water heaters, which have the capacity to act as thermal energy storage, are well suited to demand management strategies in smart grid applications. However, finding the balance between managing power load, reducing thermal energy losses, user’s convenience, and bacterial growth control, requires accurate modelling of the internal thermal dynamics of the tank, including stratification. As a black box, this unknown is dependent on a multitude of environmental factors (e.g., ambient temperature and inlet temperature), water draw patterns, scheduling, set temperatures and orientation of the vessel. The latter affects the stratification and temperature variation inside the tank, and therefore has a direct bearing on the balancing act of demand management. Although this has been assessed inside vertically oriented tanks, what happens inside the horizontal variety—ubiquitous in developing countries—is currently left to the guesswork. In this paper, we present the development of an e... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: balanced load, four-leg inverter, Model Predictive Control, unbalanced load, wave energy converter
A study on the capacity increase of a power converter according to the increase in the single capacity of wave energy converters and four-leg topology that can supply stable power even under unbalanced load conditions during independent operation is required. Therefore, in this paper, the performances of various four-leg inverters, from two-level inverters to three-level inverters, which are used as power converters for wave energy converters, are compared respectively. Since the four-leg converter has an unusual structure, the performance of each four-leg inverter was analyzed by applying the model predictive control that can easily and simply configure the controller. To verify the performance of each four-leg inverter, a comparison was performed under balanced load and unbalanced load conditions. Based on this, a suitable four-leg topology of the power converter for wave energy converters was confirmed.

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, autonomous operation, deep reinforcement learning, nuclear power plant, soft actor-critic algorithm
Many industries apply traditional controllers to automate manual control. In recent years, artificial intelligence controllers applied with deep-learning techniques have been suggested as advanced controllers that can achieve goals from many industrial domains, such as humans. Deep reinforcement learning (DRL) is a powerful method for these controllers to learn how to achieve their specific operational goals. As DRL controllers learn through sampling from a target system, they can overcome the limitations of traditional controllers, such as proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. In nuclear power plants (NPPs), automatic systems can manage components during full-power operation. In contrast, startup and shutdown operations are less automated and are typically performed by operators. This study suggests DRL-based and PID-based controllers for cold shutdown operations, which are a part of startup operations. By comparing the suggested controllers, this study aims to verify th... Forced Oscillation Grid Vulnerability Analysis and Mitigation Using Inverter-Based Resources: Texas Grid Case Study
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active power modulation, forced oscillation, grid vulnerability analysis, inverter-based resources (IBRs)
Forced oscillation events have become a challenging problem with the increasing penetration of renewable and other inverter-based resources (IBRs), especially when the forced oscillation frequency coincides with the dominant natural oscillation frequency. A severe forced oscillation event can deteriorate power system dynamic stability, damage equipment, and limit power transfer capability. This paper proposes a two-dimension scanning forced oscillation grid vulnerability analysis method to identify areas/zones in the system that are critical to forced oscillation. These critical areas/zones can be further considered as effective actuator locations for the deployment of forced oscillation damping controllers. Additionally, active power modulation control through IBRs is also proposed to reduce the forced oscillation impact on the entire grid. The proposed methods are demonstrated through a case study on a synthetic Texas power system model. The simulation results demonstrate that the cr... [more]

A Multi-Turbine Approach for Improving Performance of Wind Turbine Power-Based Fault Detection Methods
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: critical comparison, Fault Detection, multi-turbine, performance evaluation, simulation framework, wind energy, wind turbines
The relationship between wind speed and the power produced by a wind turbine is expressed by its power curve. Power curves are commonly used to monitor the production performance of a wind turbine by asset managers to ensure optimal production. They can also be used as a tool to detect faults occurring on a wind turbine when the fault causes a decrease in performance. However, the wide dispersion of data generally observed around the reference power curve limits the detection performance of power curve-based techniques. Fault indicators, such as residuals, which measure the difference between the actual power produced and the expected power, are largely affected by this dispersion. To increase the detection performance of power-based fault detection methods, a hybrid solution of mono-multi-turbine residual generation is proposed in this paper to reduce the influence of the power curve dispersion. A new simulation framework, modeling the effect of wind nature (turbulent/laminar) on the... [more]

Fault Diagnosis Method of Waterproof Valves in Engineering Mixing Machinery Based on a New Adaptive Feature Extraction Model
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive feature extraction, engineering mixing machinery, intelligent fault diagnosis, multi-path inputs, waterproof valve
Due to the complex working medium of oil in construction engineering, the waterproof valve in mixing machinery can easily cause different degrees of failure. Moreover, under adverse working conditions and complicated noise backgrounds, it is very difficult to detect the fault of waterproof valves. Thus, a fault diagnosis method is proposed, especially for the fault detection of waterproof valves as a key component in the construction of mixing machinery. This fault diagnosis method is based on a new adaptive feature extraction model, with multi-path signals to the improved deep residual shrinkage network−stacked denoising convolutional autoencoder (named DRSN−SDCAE). Firstly, the noisy vibration signals collected by the two vibration sensors are preprocessed, and then transmitted to the parallel structure improved DRSN−SDCAE for adaptive denoising and feature extraction. Finally, these results are fused through the feature fusion strategy to realize the effective fault diagnosis of the... [more]

Polar Voltage Space Vectors of the Six-Phase Two-Level VSI
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: algorithm of inverter control, polar voltage space vector, six-phase and two-lever inverter, state and space vector
The paper recommends polar voltage space vectors of the six-phase and two-level inverter as a useful mathematical tool for vector control of the inverter. The inverter model is described using three mathematical tools: analytic expressions, voltage state, and space vectors. The analytic formulas allow for the determination of elementary physical inverter quantities: current and voltage. The state voltage vectors make it easy to define phase voltage distribution in every possible state of the inverter and voltage space vectors are the most important tool used for inverters’ control. The space vectors are defined using the standard voltage space vector transformation, while the state vectors are denoted by binary numbers and determine all voltage states of the inverter. The proposed notation system and vectors’ marking seem to be extremely useful in specifying the inverter states. This system certifies a deep correlation between the space and state vectors as they are described using the... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control variables, distribution, new teaching–learning-based optimization algorithm, optimal reactive power control problem
Teaching−learning-based optimization has the disadvantages of weak population diversity and the tendency to fall into local optima, especially for multimodal and high-dimensional problems such as the optimal reactive power dispatch problem. To overcome these shortcomings, first, in this study, a new enhanced TLBO is proposed through novel and effective θ-self-adaptive teaching and learning to optimize voltage and active loss management in power networks, which is called the optimal reactive power control problem with continuous and discontinuous control variables. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: aftertreatment system, integrated emission management, Model Predictive Control, pollutant emissions, supervisory control, variable engine calibration
In this work, a predictive supervisory controller is presented that optimizes the interaction between a diesel engine and its aftertreatment system (ATS). The fuel consumption is minimized while respecting an upper bound on the emitted tailpipe NOx mass. This is achieved by optimally balancing the fuel consumption, the engine-out NOx emissions, and the ATS heating. The proposed predictive supervisory controller employs a two-layer model predictive control structure and solves the optimal control problem using a direct method. Through experimental validation, the resulting controller was shown to reduce the fuel consumption by 1.1% at equivalent tailpipe NOx emissions for the nonroad transient cycle when compared to the operation with a fixed engine calibration. Further, the controller’s robustness to different missions, initial ATS temperatures, NOx limits, and mispredictions was demonstrated.

Technical Control and Optimal Dispatch Strategy for a Hybrid Energy System
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control dispatch strategy, microgrid system, net present cost, Optimization
Optimal dispatch is a major concern in the optimization of hybrid energy systems (HESs). Efficient and effective dispatch models that satisfy the load demand at the minimum net present cost (NPC) are crucial because of the high capital costs of renewable energy technologies. The dispatch algorithms native to hybrid optimization of multiple energy resources (HOMER) software, cycle-charging (CC) and load-following (LF), are powerful for modeling and optimizing HESs. In these control strategies, the decision to use fuel cell systems (FCs) or battery energy storage systems (BESs) at each time step is made based on the lowest cost choice. In addition, the simultaneous operation of a FC with a BES reduces the operating efficiency of the FC. These deficiencies can affect the optimal design of HESs. This study introduces a dispatch algorithm specifically designed to minimize the NPC by maximizing the usage of FCs over other components of HESs. The framework resolves the dispatch deficiencies o... [more]

A Group-Based Droop Control Strategy Considering Pitch Angle Protection to Deloaded Wind Farms
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: deloading control, droop control, exponential membership function, frequency regulation capability, frequency stability
To promote the frequency stability of a system with high penetration of wind power integrated into it, this paper presents a systematic frequency regulation strategy for wind farms (WFs). As preparation for frequency response, a coordinated deloading control (CDC) scheme combining the over-speed control (OSC) and the pitch angle control (PAC) methods is proposed for wind turbine generators (WTGs) to preserve power reserve. The novelty lies in the consideration of high wind speed situations and pitch angle protection. Then, a group-based droop control (GBDC) scheme is proposed for a WF consisting of WTGs with the CDC. In this scheme, WTGs are divided into two groups for different controls. To improve the frequency response performance and ensure stable operation, the droop coefficients of the WF, groups, and all WTGs are determined according to their frequency regulation capabilities (FRCs). Moreover, pitch angle protection during the frequency response process is considered in this sch... [more]

In the field of power electronics-based electrical power conversion, the Dual Active Bridge (DAB) topology has become very popular in recent years due to its characteristics (e.g., bidirectional operation and galvanic isolation), which are particularly suitable to applications such as interface to renewable energy sources, battery storage systems and in smart grids. Although this converter type has been extensively investigated, its analysis and control still pose many challenges, due to the multiple control variables that affect the complex behavior of the converter. This paper presents a theoretical model of the single-phase DAB converter. The proposed model is very general, i.e., it can consider any modulation technique and operating condition.
