Optimization Control of Oilfield Waterflooding Systems Based on Different Zone and Pressure
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: different zone and pressure, K-means, operation control, pipeline network, waterflooding system
The scrapping of old waterflooding wells and the increase in new waterflooding wells results in mixed flooding of high−low pressure wells in various oil layers in waterflooding systems. In order to meet production operation requirements, the whole system is in a state of high pressure, which leads to an increase in energy consumption and complicates the operation of waterflooding networks. According to the pressure distribution of wells, proceeding with regional accurate waterflooding can reduce operation costs and improve development efficiency. Considering the technical constraints of waterflooding networks, a method was proposed, which can quantitatively optimize classification and zoning for waterflooding of high−low pressure wells according to the pressure of networks and wells. At the same time, the ant colony algorithm and genetic algorithm were fused to form a new adaptive ant colony genetic hybrid algorithm, which can effectively determine the best pumping scheme of the waterf... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building as a service, building automation and control systems, building energy management systems, EN 15232 standard, prosumer, smart readiness indicator
Improving energy efficiency and increasing the level of intelligence are two main factors determining the current development trends for new and modernized buildings. They are especially important in the perspective of development of prosumer installations and local microgrids. A key tool to achieve these goals is a well-designed and implemented Building Automation and Control System (BACS). This paper presents a new hybrid approach to the design and technical organization of BACS based on the provisions of the EN 15232 standard and the guidelines of the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) defined in the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive 2018 (EPBD 2018). The main assumptions of this hybrid approach along with examples of functional BACS designs for small prosumer installations organized according to them are provided. Potential impact on building energy performance is discussed as well. Finally, a SWOT analysis of the possibility of merging the EN 15232 standard guidelines and the... [more]

Generalized Sliding Mode Observers for Simultaneous Fault Reconstruction in the Presence of Uncertainty and Disturbance
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Fault Detection, linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), robust fault reconstruction, sliding mode observer
In this paper, a generalized sliding mode observer design method is proposed for the robust reconstruction of sensors and actuators faults in the presence of both unknown disturbances and uncertainties. For this purpose, the effect of uncertainty and disturbance on the system has been considered in generalized state-space form, and the LMI tool is combined with the concept of an equivalent output error injection method to reduce the effects of them on the reconstruction process. The upper bound of the disturbance and uncertainty are minimized in the design of the sliding motion so that the reconstruction of the faults will be minimized. The design method is applied for actuator faults in the generalized state-space form, and then with some suitable filtering, the method extends as sensors and actuators coincidentally faults. Since in the proposed approach, the state trajectories do not leave the sliding manifold even in simultaneous sensors and actuators faults, then the faults are rec... [more]

Stability Analysis of Open-Loop V/Hz Controlled Asynchronous Machines and Two Novel Mitigation Strategies for Oscillations Suppression
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active damping, eigenvalues, induction motor drive, instability, oscillations, small-signal model, stability analysis, V/Hz control
Asynchronous machines are always widely used in most industrial applications due to their reliability, flexibility, and manoeuvrability. To achieve variable speed operations, the quite simple open-loop V/Hz control is largely utilized. Under open-loop V/Hz control, the nonlinear interaction is well known to cause current and torque oscillations while operating at low to medium speeds under light loads. This article presents the stability analysis of induction motors at low−medium frequencies under no-load conditions with the V/Hz control. A system representation in the form of state space is discussed, and the region of instability is plotted against the V/f plane. Two novel and refined methods for the mitigation of oscillations in the region of instability are presented. The two proposed algorithms are finally tested and validated through simulation on an inverter-fed induction motor drive system.

A Wide-Area Fuzzy Control Design with Latency Compensation to Mitigate Sub-Synchronous Resonance in DFIG-Based Wind Farms
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DFIG, fuzzy controller, latency compensation, measurement systems, sub-synchronous resonance
This paper proposes an auxiliary damping control approach based on the wide-area measurement system (WAMS). Its main objective is to mitigate sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) in doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind farms connected to a series capacitive compensated transmission network. To mitigate the delay in sending measurement signals, typically associated with wide-area measurement systems, a fuzzy logic wide-area damping controller (FLWADC) is considered to mitigate the time delay caused by the phasor measurement unit (PMU) measurement. The FLWADC is a supplementary signal at the stator voltage of the grid-side converter (GSC) of the DFIG-based wind farms. The FLWADC was executed by using the voltage and capacitor voltage variations of the series capacitive compensated transmission network. The effectiveness and validity of the proposed auxiliary damping control was verified using a modified scheme of the IEEE first benchmark model via time-area simulation analysis usi... [more]

Robust Errorless-Control-Targeted Technique Based on MPC for Microgrid with Uncertain Electric Vehicle Energy Storage Systems
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: errorless control, microgrid, Model Predictive Control, robustness, sliding mode disturbance observer
Regarding the microgrid with large-scale electric vehicle (EV) energy storage systems working at the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) mode, uncertain factors (e.g., the number of EVs feeding the microgrid shifts frequently) make the system unfixed, leading to the fact that it is difficult to precisely determine the real-time droop coefficients of the system, thereby degrading the performance of the traditional inverter control strategies that rely on the droop coefficients. To solve the problem, this paper proposes an errorless-control-targeted double control loop (DCL) technique based on robust MPC to control the microgrid with EV energy storage systems without using droop coefficients. Firstly, the structure of the DCL method is developed, with each component in the structure detailed. Compared to the traditional control strategies, the novel one regards the frequency, voltage, and currents as the control objectives instead of active/inactive power. It deserves to be mentioned that the frequenc... [more]

Virtual In Situ Calibration for Operational Backup Virtual Sensors in Building Energy Systems
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building energy systems, data-driven modeling, sensor calibration, soft sensors, virtual in-situ calibration (VIC), virtual sensors
Intelligent building systems require a data-rich environment. Virtual sensors can provide informative and reliable sensing environments for operational datasets in building systems. In particular, backup virtual sensors that are in situ are beneficial for developing the counterparts of target physical sensors in the field, thus providing additional information about residuals between both types of sensors for use in data-driven modeling, analytics, and diagnostics. Therefore, to obtain virtual sensor potentials continuously during operation, we proposed an in situ calibration method for in situ backup virtual sensors (IBVS) in operational building energy systems, based on virtual in situ calibration (VIC). The proposed method was applied using operational datasets measured by a building automation system built into a target system. In a case study, the in situ virtual sensor showed large errors (the root mean squared error (RMSE) was 0.97 °C) on certain days. After conducting the propo... [more]

0 and L1 Guidance and Path-Following Control for Airborne Wind Energy Systems

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: airborne wind energy, kite control, L0 guidance logic, L1 guidance logic, path following
For an efficient and reliable operation of an Airborne Wind Energy System, it is widely accepted that the kite should follow a pre-defined optimized path. In this article, we address the problem of designing a trajectory controller so that such path is closely followed. The path-following controllers investigated are based on a well-known nonlinear guidance logic termed L1 and on a proposed modification of it, which we termed L0. We have developed and implemented both L0 and L1 controllers for an AWES. The two controllers have an easy implementation with an explicit expression for the control law based on the cross-track error, on the heading angle relative to the path, and on a single parameter L (L0 or L1, depending on each controller) that we are able to tune. The L0 controller has an even easier implementation since the explicit control law can be used without the need to switch controllers. Since the switching of controllers might jeopardize stability, the L0 controller has an imp... [more]

How Much Energy Do We Need to Fly with Greater Agility? Energy Consumption and Performance of an Attitude Stabilization Controller in a Quadcopter Drone: A Modified MPC vs. PID
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: attitude controller, energy consumption, GPC, Model Predictive Control, MPC, PID, quadcopter, UAV
Increasing demand for faster and more agile Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs, drones) is observed in many scenarios, including but not limited to medical supply or Search-and-Rescue (SAR) missions. Exceptional maneuverability is critical for robust obstacle avoidance during autonomous flights. A novel modification to the Model Predictive Controller (MPC) is proposed, which drastically improves the speed of the attitude controller of our quadcopter drone. The modified MPC is suitable for the onboard microcontroller and the 400 Hz main control loop. The peak and total energy consumption and the performance of the attitude controllers are assessed: the modified MPC and the default Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID). The tests were conducted in a custom-implemented Flight Mode in the ArduCopter software stack, securing the drone in a test harness, which guarantees the experiments are repetitive. The ultimate MPC greatly increases maneuverability of the drone and may inspire more research... [more]

Long-Horizon Nonlinear Model Predictive Control of Modular Multilevel Converters
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: modular multilevel converter (MMC), nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC), power transfer control (PTC), ultra-fast charging stations (UFCSs)
Modular Multilevel Converters (MMCs) are a topology that can scale several voltage levels to obtain higher efficiency and lower harmonics than most voltage-source converters. MMCs are very attractive for renewable energy applications and fast charging stations for electric vehicles, where they can improve performance and reduce costs. However, due to the complex architecture and the large number of submodules, the current control of modular multilevel converters is a challenging task. The standard solution in practice relies on hierarchical decoupling and single-input-single-output control loops, which are limited in performance. Linearization-based model predictive control was already proposed for current control in MMCs, as it can optimize transient response and better handle constraints. In this paper, we show that the validity of linear MMC models significantly limits the prediction horizon length, and we propose a nonlinear MPC (NMPC) solution for current control in MMCs to solve... Protection Coordination Index Assessment Using Fuzzy Logic Controller
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fuzzy logic controller, overcurrent relay, protection coordination index, protection index, protection level assessment
This paper proposes the assessment method of the protection coordination index (PCI) for overcurrent protection relay and upstream relay. The protection coordination index is an indicator of how properly the equipment is protected by protective relay. The PCI is used to check the appropriateness of the protection coordination for both the component-wise and pair-wise. The protection index of each protection component of the integrated digital relay is assessed by a fuzzy logic controller. Then the device-level protection index and the composite protection coordination index between up and downstream relays are also assessed. Since the setting criteria of the overcurrent relays are given in a certain range rather than a crisp value, it is difficult to indicate the protection level of the protective system as an index. Currently, there is no way of knowing how well the overcurrent relay setting is. Thus, a method was proposed to evaluate the protection index of overcurrent systems using... [more]

Smart Thermostats for a Campus Microgrid: Demand Control and Improving Air Quality
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: air quality, demand response, Energy Efficiency, nearly zero-energy buildings, smart grids, smart thermostat
Achieving nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEB) is one of the main objectives defined by the European Union for achieving carbon neutrality in buildings. nZEBs are heavily reliant on distributed renewable generation energy sources, which create new challenges associated with their inherent intermittency. To achieve nZEB levels, demand management plays an essential role to balance supply and demand. Since up to two-thirds of the total consumed energy in buildings is dispended for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) operations, intelligent control of HVAC loads is of utmost importance. The present work aims to offer a solution to improve a building microgrids’ flexibility by shifting thermal loads and taking advantage of room thermal inertia. Innovation is present in using the internet of things to link several decentralized local microcontrollers with the microgrid and in the applicability of different control algorithms, such as the pre-emptive heating/cooling of a room. As on many other European islands, the energy system of Mayotte suffers from low reliability of supply, low share of renewable energies, and high costs of supply. Residential Demand Response (DR) schemes can significantly increase the flexibility of the inherent weak power grid, increasing the potential for renewable energy integration. Given that active involvement of the population is required to unlock the potential of DR, pre-assessing the population’s preferences in DR is vital to tailor favorable schemes and assure long-term uptake of the solution. As a fundamental study, this paper assesses the population’s preferences on direct load control (DLC), electricity tariffs, major motivation, and remuneration goods by processing findings from a survey of 146 residents on Mayotte. Advanced k-means cluster analysis, multinomial logistic regression, one-way analysis of variance, and Chi-square tests were applied to the survey responses to identify socio-demographic influencers. A Fuzzy Logic-Based Emulated Inertia Control to a Supercapacitor System to Improve Inertia in a Low Inertia Grid with Renewables
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: emulated inertia control, frequency control, fuzzy logic, hardware-in-loop, inertia, supercapacitor
The contribution of power generation from converter-dominated renewable energy sources (RES) has increased enormously. Consequently, the system inertia is decreasing, and it impacts the frequency of the system. With large-scale integration of power electronic inverter-based power generation from RES, inertia from energy storage devices would be unavoidable in future power grids. In this paper, the inertia emulator is formed with a supercapacitor (IE−SC) to improve inertia in a low inertia grid. To emulate the inertia in a low inertia grid, this paper proposes a fuzzy logic controller-based emulated inertia controller (FL-EIC) for an inverter attached to IE−SC. The proposed fuzzy logic controller estimates the inertial power required based on the frequency deviation and rate of change of frequency (ROCOF). The output of the fuzzy controller adds to the conventional emulated inertia control (EIC) technique to alter the load angle for the power electronic inverter of IE−SC. Specifically,... [more]

Multi-Objective Optimization-Based Health-Conscious Predictive Energy Management Strategy for Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy management strategy, fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles, health conscious, Model Predictive Control, multi-objective optimization
The Energy Management Strategy (EMS) in Fuel Cell Hybrid Electric Vehicles (FCHEVs) is the key part to enhance optimal power distribution. Indeed, the most recent works are focusing on optimizing hydrogen consumption, without taking into consideration the degradation of embedded energy sources. In order to overcome this lack of knowledge, this paper describes a new health-conscious EMS algorithm based on Model Predictive Control (MPC), which aims to minimize the battery degradation to extend its lifetime. In this proposed algorithm, the health-conscious EMS is normalized in order to address its multi-objective optimization. Then, weighting factors are assigned in the objective function to minimize the selected criteria. Compared to most EMSs based on optimization techniques, this proposed approach does not require any information about the speed profile, which allows it to be used for real-time control of FCHEV. The achieved simulation results show that the proposed approach reduces th... [more]

Experimental Study on Temporal and Spatial Evolutions of Temperature Field of Double-Pipe Freezing in Saline Stratum with a High Velocity
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: freezing temperature, frozen curtain, groundwater velocity, saline sand, temperature field
Freezing construction in saline stratum under the action of groundwater is typical. To study the coupling effect of the groundwater velocity and salinity on the freezing in saline stratum, the freezing temperature of saline sand with different salinities was obtained through experiments. A controllable velocity double-pipe freezing physical model test system for saline sand was established. The temperature distribution in saturated saline sand under different salinities and velocities were studied. The test results showed that the temporal and spatial evolutions of the temperature field were affected by the velocity and salinity. Under the same boundary temperature, the higher the salinity, the lower the temperature at the measuring point on the main surface and interface. The overlapping time varies significantly. The analysis results showed that the larger velocity and the higher the salinity, the longer the overlapping time. The velocity and salinity inhibited the development of the... [more]

Fault-Tolerant Fuzzy Logic Control of a 6-Phase Axial Flux Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Generator
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control of multiphase drives, fault tolerance, fuzzy logic, robustness, wind energy conversion systems
The objective of this paper is to propose the real-time implementation of a fault-tolerant strategy based on fuzzy logic controller (FLC) for a Six-Phase Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (6P-AFPMSM) for electrical energy production. This type of machine, suitable for high-power applications, is highly affected by the harmonics of the inductances and the electromotive force (emf) compared to the classical three-phase radial flux machine, which will influence the controller parameters of the machine. The proposed control strategy based on FLC is independent of the system model and guarantees the robustness of the process against disturbances and parameter variations of the model. An experimental comparison between FLC and a classical PI controller confirms the efficiency and the robustness of the proposed controller in healthy and faulty conditions with one open phase.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: induction heating cooker, online load estimation, power control, series RLC resonant converter
In domestic induction heating applications, cookware can be considered an equivalent load in a series resistor−inductor−capacitor resonant converter. Therefore, the electrical parameters of an equivalent circuit change according to the cookware material, size and the cookware position on the heating coil. This study proposes an online estimation method for detecting the cookware status, determining the material and estimating the equivalent heating resistance of cookware on an induction heating cooker (IHC) for power control. The proposed method could turn off the circuit in abnormal situations such as low equivalent heating coverage rate or non-ferromagnetic cookware and adjust the power in normal situations. In the method, a half-bridge series resonant converter (HBSRC) generates two test patterns with three resonant voltage pulses to detect cookware every 10 ms, only the current feedback information is needed to avoid the calculation loads and times necessary for complex signal oper... Keywords: fuzzy control, grid-connected PV system, incremental conductance algorithm, linear quadratic regulator, maximum power point tracking, unity power factor
This work presents a control scheme to control a grid-connected single-phase photovoltaic (PV) system. The considered system has four 250 W solar panels, a non-inverting buck-boost DC-DC converter, and a DC-AC inverter with an inductor-capacitor-inductor (LCL) filter. A Concept for Using Road Wetness Information in an All-Wheel-Drive Control

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: all-wheel-drive control, tyre information, vehicle dynamics
This paper presents a concept for using road wetness information in an all-wheel-drive (AWD) control that distributes drive torques in the longitudinal direction. Driving on wet roads requires special attention. Not only does the road surface friction coefficient decrease, but driving dynamics targets must be adjusted to prevent vehicle instability under wet conditions. As an exemplary application, the otherwise generic control concept is implemented on an AWD vehicle with a torque-on-demand transfer case. Therefore, the AWD topology of a drive train with a torque-on-demand transfer case is analysed in advance in terms of occurring torques and rotational speeds. In the following, the vehicle dynamics goals for driving in wet road conditions are described—divided into primary and secondary goals. Starting from a state-of-the art AWD control, an adaptive control strategy is derived by superimposing a wetness coordination unit. With the knowledge of occurring road wetness, this unit adapt... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct yaw moment, distributed drive electric bus, fuzzy sliding mode control
The direct yaw moment control can effectively enhance the yaw stability of the vehicle under extreme conditions, which has become one of the essential technologies for the distributed driving electric bus. Due to the features of a large mass and high center of gravity of the bus, lateral instability is more likely to occur under extreme driving conditions. To reduce the uncertainty and interference in the yaw movement process of the bus, this paper targets the instability caused by the coupling problem between the sideslip angle and yaw rate. An adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control is proposed to execute direct yaw moment control. The weight coefficient of the sideslip angle and the yaw rate is adjusted via fuzzy control in real time. The optimal direct yaw moment is finally obtained. A distribution method based on the vertical load proportion is adopted for the allocation of four motors’ torque.
