Integration of Stand-Alone Controlled Active Power Filters in Harmonic Power Flow of Radial Distribution Networks
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active power filter, electrical distribution network, harmonic pollution, stand-alone control system
Utilization of active power filters (APFs) is the most efficient method to reduce harmonic pollution in distribution networks. Previous approaches utilized APFs in integrated control schemes based on broad data-gathering systems. Since a broad data-gathering system is not available in most practical distribution networks, previously proposed approaches may not readily be implemented. This paper presents the utilization of stand-alone controlled APFs (SACAPFs) in radial distribution networks. Utilizing APFs with a stand-alone control system decreases implementation costs and complexity by making them autonomous and independent of integrated control systems, which are complicated and expensive in practical applications. In this paper, a single SACAPF is modeled as a dependent current source where its injection current is equal in amplitude but opposite in phase compared to the harmonic content of the current passing through the point of common coupling (reference current). Due to the pre... [more]

Distribution Network Reconfiguration Based on Hybrid Golden Flower Algorithm for Smart Cities Evolution
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: flower pollination algorithm, golden search, hybrid algorithm, loss minimization, network reconfiguration, radial distribution system, smart cities
Power losses (PL) are one of the most—if not the most—vital concerns in power distribution networks (DN). With respect to sustainability, distribution network reconfiguration (DNR) is an effective course of action to minimize power losses. However, the optimal DNR is usually a non-convex optimization process that necessitates the employment of powerful global optimization methods. This paper proposes a novel hybrid metaheuristic optimization (MO) method called the chaotic golden flower algorithm (CGFA) for PL minimization. As the name implies, the proposed method combines the golden search method with the flower pollination algorithm to multiply their benefits, guarantee the best solution, and reduce convergence time. The performance of the algorithm has been evaluated under different test systems, including the IEEE 33-bus, IEEE 69-bus, and IEEE 119-bus systems and the smart city (SC) network, each of which includes distributed-generation (DG) units and energy storage systems (ESS). Multi-Agent-Based Controller for Microgrids: An Overview and Case Study
March 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: control, distributed control, microgrid, multi-agent systems, renewable energy systems
A microgrid can be defined as a grid of interconnected distributed energy resources, loads and energy storage systems. In microgrid systems containing renewable energy resources, the coordinated operation of distributed generation units is important to ensure the stability of the microgrid. A microgrid needs a successful control scheme to achieve its design goals. Undesirable situations such as distorted voltage profile and frequency fluctuations are significantly reduced by installing the appropriate hardware such as energy storage systems, and control strategies. The multi-agent system is one of the approaches used to control microgrids. The application of multi-agent systems in electric power systems is becoming popular because of their inherent benefits such as autonomy, responsiveness, and social ability. This study provides an overview of the agent concept and multi-agent systems, as well as reviews of recent research studies on multi-agent systems’ application in microgrid contr... [more]

Distribution Network Reconfiguration Using Iterative Branch Exchange and Clustering Technique
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: branch exchange, cluster analysis, distribution network reconfiguration, evolutionary metaheuristics, Matpower, OpenDSS, power losses, voltage-dependent load
The distribution network reconfiguration problem (DNRP) refers to the challenge of searching for a given power distribution network configuration with better operating conditions, such as minimized energy losses and improved voltage levels. To accomplish that, this paper revisits the branch exchange heuristics and presents a method in which it is coupled with other techniques such as evolutionary metaheuristics and cluster analysis. The methodology is applied to four benchmark networks, the 33-, 70-, 84-, and 136-bus networks, and the results are compared with those available in the literature, using the criteria of the number of power flow executions. The methodology minimized the four systems starting from the initial configuration of the network. The main contributions of this work are the use of clustering techniques to reduce the search space of the DNRP; the consideration of voltage regulation banks and voltage-dependent loads in the feeder, requiring the addition of a constraint... March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: charging demand estimation of XFC stations, electric vehicles charging, extreme fast charging (XFC) stations, optimal configuration of XFC stations, XFC station integrated with renewable energy resources
Extreme fast charging (XFC) for electric vehicles (EVs) has emerged recently because of the short charging period. However, the extreme high charging power of EVs at XFC stations may severely impact distribution networks. This paper addresses the estimation of the charging power demand of XFC stations and the design of multiple XFC stations with renewable energy resources in current distribution networks. First, a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation tool was created utilizing the EV arrival time and state-of-charge (SOC) distributions obtained from the dataset of vehicle travel surveys. Various impact factors are considered to obtain a realistic estimation of the charging power demand of XFC stations. Then, a method for determining the optimal energy capacity of the energy storage system (ESS), ESS rated power, and size of photovoltaic (PV) panels for multiple XFC stations in a distribution network is presented, with the goal of achieving an optimal configuration. Adoption of Local Peer-to-Peer Energy Markets: Technical and Economical Perspectives for Utilities
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: co-simulation, distributed energy resources, impact analysis, local energy markets, microgrids, peer-to-peer energy trading
Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy markets constitute a promising approach for locally coordinating the increasing amount of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the distribution system. Although the benefits of P2P markets for the prosumers are already well understood, their impact on utilities is not well discussed nor well understood. This hinders the development of regulatory frameworks, which are still needed to allow for the widespread adoption of decentralized energy markets in any interested country. So far, research has been conducted in specific isolated aspects, making it difficult to understand the overall implications for utilities. The present study aims to tackle this research gap by comprehensively evaluating P2P markets’ effects, considering utilities as primary stakeholders. A qualitative roadmap with the overall benefits and challenges of adopting P2P by utilities is outlined to reach this purpose. March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: artificial neural networks, electricity distribution networks, hosting capacity, photovoltaic systems, quasi-static time series, reinforcement learning, voltage control
Increasing connection rates of rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems to electricity distribution networks has become a major concern for the distribution network service providers (DNSPs) due to the inability of existing network infrastructure to accommodate high levels of PV penetration while maintaining voltage regulation and other operational requirements. The solution to this dilemma is to undertake a hosting capacity (HC) study to identify the maximum penetration limit of rooftop PV generation and take necessary actions to enhance the HC of the network. This paper presents a comprehensive review of two topics: HC assessment strategies and reinforcement learning (RL)-based coordinated voltage control schemes. In this paper, the RL-based coordinated voltage control schemes are identified as a means to enhance the HC of electricity distribution networks. RL-based algorithms have been widely used in many power system applications in recent years due to their precise, efficient and model-f... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: dilated causal convolutions, dynamic learning rate, forecasting of natural gas spot prices, residual block, TCN
Natural gas is often said to be the most environmentally friendly fossil fuel. Its usage has increased significantly in recent years. Meanwhile, accurate forecasting of natural gas spot prices has become critical to energy management, economic growth, and environmental protection. This work offers a novel model based on the temporal convolutional network (TCN) and dynamic learning rate for predicting natural gas spot prices over the following two weekdays. The residual block structure of TCN provides good prediction accuracy, and the dilated causal convolutions minimize the amount of computation. The dynamic learning rate setting was adopted to enhance the model’s prediction accuracy and robustness. Compared with three existing models, i.e., the one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN), gate recurrent unit (GRU), and long short-term memory (LSTM), the proposed model can achieve better performance over other models with mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), mean absolute e... Integration of Local and Central Control Empowers Cooperation among Prosumers and Distributors towards Safe, Efficient, and Cost-Effective Operation of Microgrids
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy community, local control, microgrid
The advent of energy communities will revolutionize the energy market. However, exploiting their full potential requires innovations in the structure and management of low-voltage grids. End users shall be aggregated within microgrids, where their physical interaction is possible and coordinated operation of power sources and energy storage systems can be achieved. Moreover, meshed network topologies will enable multiple paths for the power flow. The combination of smart control and meshed networks can dramatically improve microgrid performance in terms of power quality, efficiency, and resilience to transients and faults. Ubiquitous control of the power flow becomes possible, as well as active fault clearing and isolation of subgrids without tripping circuit breakers. This paper proposes a control approach that pursues such goals without requiring modification of control and communication hardware implemented in commercial inverters. Distribution System State Estimation and False Data Injection Attack Detection with a Multi-Output Deep Neural Network
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active distribution network, bad data detection, deep neural network, distribution system state estimation, false data injection attacks, weighted least square
Distribution system state estimation (DSSE) has been introduced to monitor distribution grids; however, due to the incorporation of distributed generations (DGs), traditional DSSE methods are not able to reveal the operational conditions of active distribution networks (ADNs). DSSE calculation depends heavily on real measurements from measurement devices in distribution networks. However, the accuracy of real measurements and DSSE results can be significantly affected by false data injection attacks (FDIAs). Conventional FDIA detection techniques are often unable to identify FDIAs into measurement data. In this study, a novel deep neural network approach is proposed to simultaneously perform DSSE calculation (i.e., regression) and FDIA detection (i.e., binary classification) using real measurements. In the proposed work, the classification nodes in the DNN allow us to identify which measurements on which phasor measurement unit (PMU), if any, were affected. In the proposed approach, we... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: adaptive protection systems, directional overcurrent relays, distributed generation, metaheuristics, microgrids
This work proposes a smart protection system for microgrids, which relies on an adaptive metaheuristic for the automatic calculation of optimal settings for directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs). The adaptive fuzzy directional bat algorithm (AFDBA) associated with a fuzzy inference system (FIS) is used for this purpose. A prominent advantage of this solution is that there is no need for an initial tuning of the parameters associated with the algorithm, unlike many traditional approaches reported in the literature. Such a metaheuristic is used in the conception of an adaptive protection system (APS) in the context of a microgrid while taking into account the connection status of distributed generation (DG) units under distinct scenarios. A performance comparison with a protection system with fixed optimal settings (PSFOS) is also presented. The results demonstrate that the proposed APS outperforms the PSFOS while providing faster response, higher reliability and less susceptibility to... [more]

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: decentralization, distribution network, energy community, energy pricing mechanism, network service mechanism, peer-to-peer energy trading, transactive energy
Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading facilitates both consumers and prosumers to exchange energy without depending on an intermediate medium. This system makes the energy market more decentralized than before, which generates new opportunities in energy-trading enhancements. In recent years, P2P energy trading has emerged as a method for managing renewable energy sources in distribution networks. Studies have focused on creating pricing mechanisms for P2P energy trading, but most of them only consider energy prices. This is because of a lack of understanding of the pricing mechanisms in P2P energy trading. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of pricing mechanisms for energy and network service prices in P2P energy trading, based on the recent advancements in P2P. It suggests that pricing methodology can be categorized by trading process in two categories, namely energy pricing and network service pricing (NSP). Within these categories, network service pricing can be used to ident... [more]

Keywords: buck–boost converter, DAB converter, DC microgrid, DC-DC converters design and sizing, energy storage systems, sodium metal halide battery
The present paper proposes an integrated method for modelling and designing Energy Storage Systems (ESSs) based on Sodium Metal Halide Batteries (SMHBs). The implementation of the proposed methodology for designing an SMHB-ESS used for supporting telecommunication DC microgrids is presented. The motivation concerning this specific case study is the role assumed by battery technology in improving the reliability and robustness of telecommunication DC microgrids. In this context, the SMHBs, due to their operative temperature, dynamic power response and robustness against cell breakdown, represent one of the most suitable technologies, mainly when challenging environmental conditions occur. The motivation for implementing an integrated design approach is the non-linear behaviour of SMHBs, which requires a high accuracy in battery modelling and in managing DC-DC interfacing for full SMHB capacity exploitation. Keywords: bi-level decision-making models, Energy Storage, high PV penetration, optimal configuration
In this paper, a method for rationally allocating energy storage capacity in a high-permeability distribution network is proposed. By constructing a bi-level programming model, the optimal capacity of energy storage connected to the distribution network is allocated by considering the operating cost, load fluctuation, and battery charging and discharging strategy. By constructing four scenarios with energy storage in the distribution network with a photovoltaic permeability of 29%, it was found that the bi-level decision-making model proposed in this paper saves 2346.66 yuan and 2055.05 yuan, respectively, in daily operation cost compared to the scenario without energy storage and the scenario with single-layer energy storage. After accessing IEEE-33 nodes for simulation verification, it was found that the bi-level decision-making model proposed in this paper has a good inhibition effect on voltage fluctuation and load fluctuation after energy storage configuration. Distribution System Management Model Based on the Cooperative Concept of Unifying the Multi-Owned Networks
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cooperatives, distribution system, distribution use-of-system charges, overlapping microgrid, wheeling charges
The growth of microgrids to fulfil electricity demand could lead to arguments or conflicts between the private microgrid system owners and the existing national distribution authority, especially in overlapping sales areas. The core issue identified in this paper is a distribution system management model based on the cooperative concept of unifying the multi-owned networks as a single system to ensure the natural monopoly function. This model can avoid complex wheeling charges across multi-owned grids within overlapping sales areas, in which all network users pay at the expense of the merged system charge. This paper proposes the model and shows numerical examples using a suitable distribution network pricing model to recover existing costs and plan for future system expansion. The proposed model and charging algorithm were tested on a modified IEEE 13 bus to examine their impacts. The result demonstrates that the model resolves the issues with the overlapping sales area and creates a... [more]

Market Mechanisms and Trading in Microgrid Local Electricity Markets: A Comprehensive Review
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: energy management system, energy trading, local energy market, market mechanisms, microgrid, transactive energy system
Electricity generation using distributed renewable energy systems is becoming increasingly common due to the significant increase in energy demand and the high operation of conventional power systems with fossil fuels. The introduction of distributed renewable energy systems in the electric grid is crucial for delivering future zero-emissions energy systems and is cost-effective for promoting and facilitating large-scale generation for prosumers. However, these deployments are forcing changes in traditional energy markets, with growing attention given to transactive energy networks that enable energy trading between prosumers and consumers for more significant benefits in the cluster mode. This change raises operational and market challenges. In recent years, extensive research has been conducted on developing different local energy market models that enable energy trading and provide the opportunity to minimize the operational costs of the distributed energy resources by promoting loc... Sizing of Hybrid Supercapacitors and Lithium-Ion Batteries for Green Hydrogen Production from PV in the Australian Climate
March 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: DC microgrids, green hydrogen, lithium-ion batteries, PV, sizing, supercapacitor
Instead of storing the energy produced by photovoltaic panels in batteries for later use to power electric loads, green hydrogen can also be produced and used in transportation, heating, and as a natural gas alternative. Green hydrogen is produced in a process called electrolysis. Generally, the electrolyser can generate hydrogen from a fluctuating power supply such as renewables. However, due to the startup time of the electrolyser and electrolyser degradation accelerated by multiple shutdowns, an idle mode is required. When in idle mode, the electrolyser uses 10% of the rated electrolyser load. An energy management system (EMS) shall be applied, where a storage technology such as a lithium-ion capacitor or lithium-ion battery is used. Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: active power filter, current harmonics, Energy Efficiency, hybrid power filter, power quality capacitor bank, reactive power, resource saving
Based on the development of the theory of reactive power and distortion power, starting with the works of Fryze and Budeanu, it has been found that the contradictions in the definition of the components of inactive powers are caused by errors in the introduced intermediate concepts and corresponding calculations when switching to nonlinear and non-sinusoidal AC circuits. The materials of the works of modern researchers and the numerical calculations carried out made it possible to trace the differences between reactive power and distortion power, to confirm the orthogonality properties of the active, reactive power, and distortion power components. The paper defines the conditions for achieving a power balance in an AC network with nonlinear loads, compiled and tested criteria leading to the absence of distortion power in a single-phase AC network. Does Capital Structure Drive Profitability in the Energy Sector?
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: capital structure, energy sector, financial leverage, profitability
This paper investigates the factors that determine the profitability of non-listed energy firms from four central European countries: Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. We apply the regression analysis, on a large panel of firm-year observations for the 2015−2019 timespan, to verify the hypothesis on the inversed relationship between leverage and profitability of the companies performing in the energy sector. Our results support the inversed relationship for debt in total and long-term debt, which are consistent with the assumptions of the pecking order theory. However, for short-term debt, we have found a direct relationship, which confirms the assumptions of the trade-off theory of capital structure. Our work contributes to the existing debate on the interplay between financial leverage and profitability, by providing evidence for a large panel of non-listed firms, from a single sector (energy)-oriented perspective.

An Application of a Risk-Based Methodology to Anticipate Critical Situations Due to Extreme Weather Events in Transmission and Distribution Grids
March 10, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: distribution network, resilience, tree fall, vulnerability, wet snow
Nowadays, distribution network operators are urged by regulatory authorities to reduce the load disruptions due to extreme weather events, i.e., to enhance network resilience: in particular, in Italy they are required to present a yearly plan (called “resilience plans”) describing the interventions aimed to improve network resilience. To this purpose, they need new methodologies and tools to assess the network resilience and to quantify the benefits of countermeasures. This paper proposes the application of a risk-based framework and tool to assess the impacts of extreme weather events in T&D grids, which anticipate critical network situations in presence of incumbent weather threats. To do this, the forecasting of weather events is combined with the component vulnerability models in order to predict which components are more prone to fail. Based on this set of components, the set of most risky contingencies is identified and their impacts on the distribution network in terms of unsupp... [more]

Novel Energy Trading System Based on Deep-Reinforcement Learning in Microgrids
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: double deep Q-networks (DDQN), double Kelly strategy, energy self-sufficient systems, energy transaction, microgrid
Inefficiencies in energy trading systems of microgrids are mainly caused by uncertainty in non-stationary operating environments. The problem of uncertainty can be mitigated by analyzing patterns of primary operation parameters and their corresponding actions. In this paper, a novel energy trading system based on a double deep Q-networks (DDQN) algorithm and a double Kelly strategy is proposed for improving profits while reducing dependence on the main grid in the microgrid systems. The DDQN algorithm is proposed in order to select optimized action for improving energy transactions. Additionally, the double Kelly strategy is employed to control the microgrid’s energy trading quantity for producing long-term profits. From the simulation results, it is confirmed that the proposed strategies can achieve a significant improvement in the total profits and independence from the main grid via optimized energy transactions.

Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: community microgrids, droop control, energy community, interconnected system, parallel inverter, power management, power sharing
This article aims to develop a smart isolated energy community (EC) by coupling the neighbouring rural community microgrids (CMGs) with enhanced droop control for efficient power sharing. This recommended solution employs a power management (PM) based droop-control to enable independent neighbouring CMGs to share power on an available basis by not constraining CMG inverters to equal power sharing. During the grid-connected mode, the droop control may have different power setpoints of each CMG. However, during the standalone mode of operation, the power setpoint should be defined according to their power rating and availability to maintain the system stability. In this article, a PM strategy is developed to maintain the power setpoints of the autonomous CMGs. An improper selection of power setpoints in autonomous CMG can raise the DC link voltage to an unmanageable value and can cause an inadvertent shutdown of CMG. The suggested PM-based droop control enables the CMG inverter not to re... [more]
