Jingpeng Wang, Youming Xiong, Baocheng Wu, Zongyu Lu, Xiaoxiao Li, Zheng Zhang
March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: flushing effect evaluation, flushing fluid, flushing time, oil-based drilling fluid, reasonable dosage
Oil-based drilling fluid has many advantages, such as stable performance, strong anti-pollution ability, and strong inhibition, and it has been widely used in the world. However, at present, there is no unified evaluation standard for the effect of flushing fluid under this condition, and most of them are based on the flushing effect evaluation of water-based drilling fluid. However, there are few studies on wetting reversal phenomenon, reasonable dosage, and flushing time between oil-based drilling fluid and flushing fluid on the two-phase interface. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a comprehensive evaluation method for the effect of flushing fluid under oil-based drilling fluid, and explore the relationship between the amount of flushing fluid and flushing efficiency, so as to determine the reasonable range of flushing fluid consumption. In this paper, using the existing experimental instruments, a type A oil-based flushing fluid commonly used in oil fields was selected for th... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon additives, redox flow battery, rheology, zinc slurry air flow battery, zinc-air battery
The performance of redox flow batteries is notably influenced by the electrolyte, especially in slurry-based flow batteries, as it serves as both an ionic conductive electrolyte and a flowing electrode. In this study, carbon additives were introduced to achieve a rechargeable zinc slurry flow battery by minimizing the zinc plating on the bipolar plate that occurs during charging. When no carbon additive was present in the zinc slurry, the discharge current density was 24 mA∙cm−2 at 0.6 V, while the use of carbon additives increased it to up to 38 mA∙cm−2. The maximum power density was also increased from 16 mW∙cm−2 to 23 mW∙cm−2. Moreover, the amount of zinc plated on the bipolar plate during charging decreased with increasing carbon content in the slurry. Rheological investigation revealed that the elastic modulus and yield stress are directly proportional to the carbon content in the slurry, which is beneficial for redox flow battery applications, but comes at the expense of an incre... Subject: Materials
Keywords: accumulated plastic strain, ductile fracture, elasto-plastic seismic analysis, fatigue-induced damage, inelastic material model, seismic design, strain-based criteria, triaxiality factor
In this paper, the feasibility study to develop strain-based seismic design criteria applicable for the components of nuclear power plants are carried out as an alternative rule to the current stress-based criteria. To do this, two acceptance criteria are investigated through the detailed example of an application for the surge line nozzles in a nuclear steam supply system, which are known as one of the seismic fragile components in nuclear power plants. These strain-based seismic design criteria are primarily to prevent two types of failure modes, such as a ductile fracture and a cyclic fatigue-induced damage due to continuous large amplitude cyclic loads during seismic event. Through the example problem, the required procedures are described step-by-step with calculations of an accumulated plastic strain, triaxiality factor by the elasto-plastic seismic analysis using the finite element method. For a precise inelastic seismic analysis, the Chaboche kinematic and Voce isotropic harden... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: adhesion, atomic force microscope (AFM), enhanced oil recovery (EOR), low salinity, nanofluid, nanoscale, wettability alteration
In this study, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques—namely low salinity and nanofluid EOR—are probed at the nanometer-scale using an atomic force microscope (AFM). Mica substrates were used as model clay-rich rocks while AFM tips were coated to present alkyl (-CH3), aromatic (-C6H5) and carboxylic acid (-COOH) functional groups, to simulate oil media. We prepared brine formulations to test brine dilution and cation bridging effects while selected concentrations (0 to 1 wt%) of hydrophilic SiO2 nanoparticles dispersed in 1 wt% NaCl were used as nanofluids. Samples were immersed in fluid cells and chemical force mapping was used to measure the adhesion force between polar/non-polar moieties to substrates. Adhesion work was evaluated based on force-displacement curves and compared with theories. Results from AFM studies indicate that low salinity waters and nanoparticle dispersions promote nanoscale wettability alteration by significantly reducing three-phase adhesion force and the reve... March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: artificial neural network (ANN), coal mine methane (CMM), cogeneration, electrical energy, greenhouse gas reduction, methane capture and utilisation, production forecast
Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane cause global warming and consequently climate change. Great efforts are being made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the objective of addressing this problem, hence the popularity of technologies conductive to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 emissions can be reduced by improving the thermal efficiency of combustion engines, for example, by using cogeneration systems. Coal mine methane (CMM) emerges due to mining activities as methane released from the coal and surrounding rock strata. The amount of methane produced is primarily influenced by the productivity of the coal mine and the gassiness of the coal seam. The gassiness of the formation around the coal seam and geological conditions are also important. Methane can be extracted to the surface using methane drainage installations and along with ventilation air. The large amounts of methane captured by methane drainage installations can be used for energy production. Thi... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cellulose insulation material, power-series theory, temperature effect, time–domain dielectric response, transformer
The measurement of polarization and depolarization currents (PDC) based on time−domain response is an effective method for state assessment of cellulose insulation material in oil-immersed electrical equipment. However, the versatility of the data obtained at different temperatures is limited because of the temperature dependence of the PDC. In this respect, the universal conversion of PDC data at different temperatures is an essential aspect to improve the accuracy of the determination of insulating properties of cellulose materials immersed in the oil. Thus, an innovative temperature conversion method based on polarization time-varying current (PTC, obtained by multiplying the polarization current and time) is proposed in this article. In the current work, the PTC data at different temperatures are obtained from the oil-immersed cellulose pressboards with different moisture. Afterwards, the functional model based on the power series theory is used to simulate the PTC data, through wh... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: computational fluid dynamic, flow characteristics, microorganism attachment, microstructure, shear stress
The research of marine antifouling is mainly conducted from the aspects of chemistry, physics, and biology. In the present work, the movement model of microorganisms along or against the flow direction on the microstructural surface was established. The model of globose algae with a diameter of 5 μm in the near-wall area was simulated by computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and the fluid kinematic characteristics and shear stress distribution over different-sized microstructures and in micropits were compared. Simulation results revealed that the increase of the β value (height to width ratio) was prone to cause vortexes in micropits. In addition, the closer the low-velocity region of the vortex center to the microstructural surface, the more easily the upper fluid of the microstructure slipped in the vortex flow and reduced the microbial attachment. Moreover, the shear stress in the micropit with a height and width of 2 μm was significantly higher than those in others; thus, microbes i... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon nanotube, direct absorption solar collector, heat storage, microencapsulated phase-change material, photo-thermal conversion efficiency
In this study, a new type of functional hybrid suspension for solar energy conversion and thermal energy storage was prepared by adding carbon nanotube (CNT) and microencapsulated phase-change material (MEPCM) into deionized water. MEPCM with octadecane as the core material and titania (TiO2) as the shell material was synthesized by the sol−gel method. The MEPCMs were spherical particles with diameters of 2−4 μm, and the thickness of the shell was about 100 nm. The MEPCM achieved better thermal stability and thermal conductivity than the pure octadecane due to the TiO2 shell. The melting and solidification latent heats of the MEPCM were about 154.24 and 154.26 J/g, respectively. The encapsulation efficiency of octadecane was calculated to be 65.84%. Most of all, the novel hybrid CNT and MEPCM suspensions exhibited remarkable dispersion stability owing to the stable reticular structure composed of CNT in the suspension. Compared with pure water, the thermal conductivity, specific heat o... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: activated carbon, cellulose conversion, one-pot hydrolytic hydrogenation, Ru nanoparticles, sorbitol
Catalysts consisting of Ru nanoparticles (1 wt%), supported on mesoporous activated carbons (ACs), were prepared and used in the one-pot hydrolytic hydrogenation of cellulose to obtain sorbitol. The carbon materials used as supports are a pristine commercial mesoporous AC (named SA), and two samples derived from it by sulfonation or oxidation treatments (named SASu and SAS, respectively). The catalysts have been thoroughly characterized regarding both surface chemistry and porosity, as well as Ru electronic state and particle size. The amount and type of surface functional groups in the carbon materials becomes modified as a result of the Ru incorporation process, while a high mesopore volume is preserved upon functionalization and Ru incorporation. The prepared catalysts have shown to be very active, with cellulose conversion close to 50% and selectivity to sorbitol above 75%. The support functionalization does not lead to an improvement of the catalysts’ behavior and, in fact, the Ru... [more]

March 31, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bifacial gain, bifacial PV module, diffuse irradiance factor, particulate matter, reflective material, temperature mismatch
Bifacial photovoltaic (PV) modules can take advantage of rear-surface irradiance, enabling them to produce more energy compared with monofacial PV modules. However, the performance of bifacial PV modules depends on the irradiance at the rear side, which is strongly affected by the installation setup and environmental conditions. In this study, we experiment with a bifacial PV module and a bifacial PV system by varying the size of the reflective material, vertical installation, temperature mismatch, and concentration of particulate matter (PM), using three testbeds. From our analyses, we found that the specific yield increased by 1.6% when the reflective material size doubled. When the PV module was installed vertically, the reduction of power due to the shadow effect occurred, and thus the maximum current was 14.3% lower than the short-circuit current. We also observed a maximum average surface temperature mismatch of 2.19 °C depending on the position of the modules when they were comp... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: coal mine goaf, foamed concrete, gas isolation, optimum mix, orthogonal experiment
In view of the serious threat of gas accumulation in the coal mine goaf and the limitations of the existing gas sealing materials, the orthogonal experiment was developed to study a new type of foamed concrete for mine gas sealing. Dry density, gas permeability, and compressive strength were studied as the material indicators according to the demands of the gas isolation material in the coal mine goaf, and the experimental results showed that foam content was the most important factor. Meanwhile, the optimum mix was selected according to the influence of foam content as well as the engineering requirement. Then two application modes of this foamed concrete for goaf gas isolation were put forward, after which the convection-diffusion model of gas was built by COMSOL Multiphysics (COMSOL Inc., Stockholm, Sweden) to reveal the mechanism of different application modes using the parameters of the new foamed concrete. Simulation results showed that this foamed concrete used as isolating mate... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: FeSe2, magnesium batteries, metal anode, Mg–Li hybrid batteries
Rechargeable magnesium (Mg)-based energy storage has attracted extensive attention in electrochemical storage systems with high theoretical energy densities. The Mg metal is earth-abundant and dendrite-free for the anode. However, there is a strong Coulombic interaction between Mg2+ and host materials that often inhibits solid-state diffusion, resulting in a large polarization and poor electrochemical performances. Herein, we develop a Mg−Li hybrid battery using a Mg-metal anode, an FeSe2 powder with uniform size and a morphology utilizing a simple solution-phase method as the counter electrode and all-phenyl-complex/tetrahydrofuran (APC)-LiCl dual-ion electrolyte. In the Li+-containing electrolyte, at a current density of 15 mA g−1, the Mg−Li hybrid battery (MLIB) delivered a satisfying initial discharge capacity of 525 mAh g−1. Moreover, the capacity was absent in the FeSe2|APC|Mg cell. The working mechanism proposed is the “Li+-only intercalation” at the FeSe2 and the “Mg2+ dissolve... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: CLO, MBT installations, municipal waste, RDF
At most of the installations for the mechanical and biological treatment of waste operated in Poland, the 0−80 mm fraction, separated from the municipal waste stream, are completely stored after biostabilization. Such an action does not fit into the EU strategy focused on circular waste management. The purpose of this study was to assess the technical feasibility of recovering the mineral fractions contained in the compost-like-output (CLO) on a technological line designed for glass recovery. The research started in January 2019, lasted for the next 12 months, and covered 29 measurement series. The following two high-energy fractions were separated from the CLO: 10−35 mm light fraction after separation in the air separator (M-1) and 35−80 mm light fraction after separation in the air separator (M-2). The stabilization processing on the glass recovery line allowed for the recovery of two high energy fractions in the total amount of 24.5% of the processed, and it stabilized the product’s... [more]

Climate change has been recognized as a threatening environmental problem around the world. CO2 is considered to be the main component of greenhouse gas. By using solar energy (light energy) as the energy source, photocatalytic conversion is one of the most effective technologies to reveal the clean utilization of CO2. Herein, using sodium tungstate, nickel nitrate, and selenium powder as the main raw materials, the high absorption and utilization of WSe2 for light energy and the high intrinsic conductivity of NiSe2 were combined by a hydrothermal method to prepare NiSe2/WSe2 and hydrazine hydrate as the reductant. Then, high-performance NiSe2/WSe2 photocatalytic material was prepared. The characterization results of XRD, XPS, SEM, specific surface area, and UV-visible spectroscopy show that the main diffraction peak of synthesized NiSe2/WSe2 is sharp, which basically coincides with the standard card. After doping NiSe2, the morphology of WSe2 was changed from a flake shape to smaller... [more]

In many heat transfer related applications, there is a need for a stable, constant supply temperature. As a result, the integration of intermittent renewable sources of heat into these processes can prove to be challenging, requiring special temperature smoothing devices or strategies. This study focuses on the application of phase change materials integrated into a double tube heat exchanger as a possible thermal smoothing device. The objective of this study is to evaluate the ability of the exchanger to smoothen out temperature variations within the cold stream outlet while the hot stream is subject to oscillating inlet conditions. A computational fluid dynamics approach is used where a numerical model is developed, validated and then used to model the conjugate heat transfer within the heat exchanger. Four organic phase change materials (PCM) with different phase change temperatures were selected for investigation (myristic, octadecane, eicosane, and wax) to study the relationship b... [more]

Nowadays, waste thermal energy represents a huge quantity of energy that, in most cases, is unfortunately dispersed rather than recovered. Although it is well known that its recovery could result in a considerable impact reduction of human activities on the environment, it is still a challenging issue. In view of this, absorption chillers and heat pumps, based on the use of porous materials capable of reversibly adsorbing and desorbing water vapor, can be considered among the preferred systems to recover waste thermal energy, especially at medium−low temperatures. This study deals with the preparation and performance of a new generation of advanced adsorbent materials specifically produced as coatings for water adsorption systems driven by low temperature heat sources (around 150 °C). The proposed coating consists of hybrid SAPO-34/polyacrilonitrile microfibers directly deposited on the surface to be coated by means of the electrospinning technique. Subject: Materials
Keywords: DC voltage, diagnostics, high voltage insulation, partial discharges
Understanding a partial discharge mechanism at direct current (DC) is an actual research topic that requires both modeling, simulations and measurements. This paper describes an influence of insulating material properties on partial discharges at DC voltage. Modifications of the traditional model reflecting the conditions of partial discharges (PD) inception and post discharge processes at DC voltage have been proposed. The aim was to show the partial discharge mechanisms and draw attention to the role of parameters of insulation materials adjacent to the cavity at DC voltage. The investigations were performed on two kinds of dielectric material used in power cables. Various combinations of specimens were designed to reveal the effect of the material resistivity on the PD activity. Key observations referred to the impact of the void adjacent material resistance on the partial discharge inception voltage threshold at DC voltage. The modified PD model was applied to analyze both inceptio... [more]

Lignocellulosic biomass is a non-edible feedstock that can be used in integrated biorefinery for the production of biochemicals and biofuel. Among lignocellulosic biomass, Cynara cardunculus L. (cardoon) is a promising crop thanks to its low water and fertilizer demand. Organosolv is a chemical treatment that uses numerous organic or aqueous solvent mixtures, and a small amount of acid catalyst, in order to solubilize the lignin and hemicellulose fractions, making the cellulose accessible to hydrolytic enzymes. Lignocellulosic residues of cardoon underwent a two-step treatment process to obtain fermentable glucose. In the first step, the milled biomass was subjected to microwave-assisted extraction using an acidified γ-valerolactone (GVL)/water mixture, yielding a solid cellulose pulp. In the second step, the pre-treated material was hydrolyzed by cellulolytic enzymes to glucose. The first step was optimized by means of a two-level full factorial design.
