Study on Adsorption Properties of Modified Corn Cob Activated Carbon for Mercury Ion
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: activated carbon, Adsorption, corn cob, mercury ion
In this study, corn cob was used as raw material and modified methods employing KOH and KMnO4 were used to prepare activated carbon with high adsorption capacity for mercury ions. Experiments on the effects of different influencing factors on the adsorption of mercury ions were undertaken. The results showed that when modified with KOH, the optimal adsorption time was 120 min, the optimum pH was 4; when modified with KMnO4, the optimal adsorption time was 60 min, the optimal pH was 3, and the optimal amount of adsorbent and the initial concentration were both 0.40 g/L and 100 mg/L under both modified conditions. The adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. Scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Zeta potential characterization results showed that the adsorption process is mainly physical adsorption, surface c... Gas Permeability Model for Porous Materials from Underground Coal Gasification Technology
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: char, gas permeability, georeactor, melted waste rock, porosity, tortuosity, underground coal gasification
Underground coal gasification (UCG) technology converts deep coal resources into synthesis gas for use in the production of electricity, fuels and chemicals. This study provides an overview of the systematic methods of the in situ coal gasification process. Furthermore, the model of the porous structure of coal has been presented and the gas movement taking place in the carbon matrix—which is part of the bed—has been described. The experimental tests were carried out with the use of air forced through the nozzle in the form of a gas stream spreading in many directions in a porous bed under bubbling conditions. The gas flow resistance coefficient was determined as a function of the Reynolds number in relation to the diameter of the gas flow nozzle. The proprietary calculation model was compared to the models of many researchers, indicating a characteristic trend of a decrease in the gas flow resistance coefficient with an increase in Reynolds number. The novelty of the study is the dete... [more]

Characterization of TSO and DSO Grid System Services and TSO-DSO Basic Coordination Mechanisms in the Current Decarbonization Context
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: congestions management, distributed flexibility, DSO grid services, TSO grid services, TSO-DSO coordination, voltage control
Power systems rely on ancillary services (ASs) to ensure system security and stability. Until recently, only the conventional power generation resources connected to the transmission grids were allowed to provide these ASs managed by the transmission system operators (TSOs), while distribution system operators (DSOs) had a more passive role, focused on guaranteeing distribution capacity to bring power to final consumers with enough quality. Now, with the decarbonization, digitalization and decentralization processes of the electrical networks, the growing integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution grids are displacing conventional generation and increasing the complexity of distribution networks’ operation, requiring the implementation of new active and coordinated management strategies between TSOs and DSOs. In this context, DERs are becoming potential new sources of flexibility for both TSOs and DSOs in helping to manage the power system. This paper proposes a... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: DPL time lag estimation, dual-phase-lag heat transfer model, heat transfer at the nanoscale, material parameter estimation, multi-domain modelling, no-mesh FDM, S-parameters measurements, scattering parameters
This paper presents the methodology of material parameters’ estimation for the dual-phase-lag (DPL) model at the nanoscale in modern integration circuit (IC) structures. The analyses and measurements performed were used in the unique dedicated micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) test structure. The electric and thermal domain of this structure was analysed. Finally, the silicon dioxide (SiO2) temperature time-lag estimation procedure is presented based on the scattering parameters measured by a vector network analyser for the considered MEMS structure together with the 2-omega method. The proposed methodology has the ability to estimate the time-lag parameter with high accuracy and is also suitable for the temperature time-lag estimation for other manufacturing process technologies of ICs and other insulation materials used for integrated circuits such as silicon nitride (Si3N4), titanium nitride (TiN), and hafnium dioxide (HfO2).

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: composites, concrete, microencapsulated phase change materials, thermal energy storage
Thermal energy storage (TES) systems for concentrated solar power plants are essential for the convenience of renewable energy sources in terms of energy dispatchability, economical aspects and their larger use. TES systems based on the use of concrete have been demonstrated to possess good heat exchange characteristics, wide availability of the heat storage medium and low cost. Therefore, the purpose of this work was the development and characterization of a new concrete-based heat storage material containing a concrete mix capable of operating at medium−high temperatures with improved performance. In this work, a small amount of shape-stabilized phase change material (PCM) was included, thus developing a new material capable of storing energy both as sensible and latent heat. This material was therefore characterized thermally and mechanically and showed increased thermal properties such as stored energy density (up to +7%, with a temperature difference of 100 °C at an average operat... The Optimum Wood Procurement Scenario and Its Dynamic Management for Integrated Energy and Material Production in Carbon-Neutral Forest Industry
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: carbon neutrality, dynamic linear optimization, Energy Efficiency, process management, renewable wood, Sustainability
The digitalization of the forest sector, the increased demand of energy-wood, as well as faster market changes have increased the number of challenges for wood procurement of the forest industry. The aim of the study is to optimize wood procurement (upstream of supply chain) of energy and material production in integrated situations, and to consider the effects of production changes on the management of procurement regions. Three scenarios described integrated production situations in a carbon-neutral forest industry: (1) declining export, (2) energy reform, and (3) extensive energy reform. Time-varying capital-, cost-, and energy efficiency of the dynamic wood-flow model affected the competitiveness of the procurement regions. As a novel contribution, energy efficiency was modeled using the price of emission allowance as a cost parameter. The results show the positive effects of the energy reforms, which partly compensate for the declining exports. In addition, it is possible to chang... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: electric machine, iron losses, magnetic device, measurement, soft magnetic composites, thermal stress
In recent years, innovative magnetic materials have been introduced in the field of electrical machines. In the ambit of soft magnetic materials, laminated steels guarantee good robustness and high magnetic performance but, in some high-frequency applications, can be replaced by Soft Magnetic Composite (SMC) materials. SMC materials allow us to reduce the eddy currents and to design innovative 3D magnetic circuits. In general, SMCs are characterized at room temperature, but as electrical machines operate at high temperature (around 100 °C), an investigation analysis of the temperature effect has been carried out on these materials; in particular, three SMC samples with different binder percentages and process parameters have been considered for magnetic and energetic characterization.

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: brine, cement, cement slurry, fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, salt mine, salt rock mass
Every year, the number of exploited mine workings necessary to seal the exploited mines increases in the world. As a result of experiments, technologies are developed that allow slurry to be pumped to fill free rock spaces or to liquidate rock mass discontinuities. The slurry preparation technologies can be divided into: subsurface and surface preparation and injection. Due to the pressure that forces the sealing slurry to move, the following can be distinguished: pressure technologies and technologies of gravity injection. The effectiveness of the work is determined by the correct selection of the technique and technology of the treatment and the selection of the optimal cement slurry recipe. The type of sealing liquid is especially important during works related to filling the exploited mine workings in salt mines. Therefore, this article presents the criteria for the selection of slurry recipes and their technological parameters, used for sealing and strengthening the salt rock mass... [more]

Validated Analytical Modeling of Eccentricity and Dynamic Displacement in Diesel Engines with Flexible Crankshaft
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: analytical modeling, diesel engine, fatigue, flexible crankshaft, mechanics of materials, Sustainability, tribology
In spite of the fact that the flexibility of the crankshaft of diesel engines exhibits notable nonlinearities, analytical modeling of such nonlinearities is not yet realized. The present study thus analytically models the effect of eccentricity on flexible crankshaft and piston secondary motion. The eccentricity of the crankshaft is modeled as the summation of the hydrodynamic eccentricity and the dynamic mass eccentricity of the crankshaft. The study also models the absolute value of the vibrational dynamic displacement of the center of the crankshaft. The paper proves that such dynamic displacement of the center of the crankshaft is sensitive to the changes in its independent variables. It was found that the most influential parameters on the dynamic displacement of the center of the crankshaft due to vibration are the natural frequency and the eccentricity of the crankshaft. The modeling of the dynamic displacement in a flexible crankshaft was validated using a case study based on t... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: caputo fractional derivative, fourier and integral transforms, heat and mass transfer, nanofluid
This paper presents a modelling of nanofluid flow using Caputo fractional derivatives through conservative equations of mass and momentum, and provides an exact solution on un-steady convective flow over a vertical plate with the mass diffusion effect, in association with an energy equation. H2O is the base liquid with clay nanoparticles floating in it in a uniform way. Boussinessq’s approach is used in the momentum equation for pressure gradient. March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: high pressure, high temperature, mercury intrusion porosimetry, reinforcement materials, strength retrogression, Young’s modulus
The influences of curing pressure on the physical and mechanical property development of oil well cement during long-term curing were studied. Five silica-enriched cement slurries designed without and with reinforcement materials (latex fiber and nano-graphene) were autoclaved at 200 °C under two different pressures. The low pressure (50 MPa) curing was conducted for 2, 60, 90 and 180 days; the high pressure (150 MPa) curing was conducted for 2 and 360 days. The physical and mechanical properties of set cement were characterized by compressive strength, Young’s modulus, and water/gas permeability; the mineral composition and microstructure were determined by X-ray diffraction, mercury intrusion porosimetry, thermogravimetry and scanning electron microscope. Test results showed that high pressure (150 MPa) curing led to a more compact microstructure, which reduced the rate of strength retrogression in the long term. Subject: Materials
Keywords: fracture behavior, high temperature, hydration process, mechanical properties, molecular dynamics, well integrity, wellbore cement
Neat well cement experience significant strength retrogression at high temperatures above 110 °C, especially at approximately 150 °C. To reveal the mechanism of performance degradation and guide the preparation of high-performance cement, we investigate the hydration process, mechanical behavior, and fracture process for well cement at the temperature of 150 °C based on molecular dynamics simulations and experiments. From triaxial pressure tests and Brazilian splitting tests, the strength, elastic modulus, and Poisson’s ratio of well cement decrease drastically with temperature increases from 80 °C to 150 °C. According to XRD, TG/DTG/DSC, and SEM, the hydration degree is insufficient, and larger pores exist in the microstructures. As the main binding phase of well cement, the mechanism of calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) influenced by curing temperatures is investigated through molecular dynamics simulations. March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3D nanonetwork, direct ultrafast pulsed nanostructure, Si structures
Silicon is one of the most used semiconductor materials around the world. This research was conducted on silicon to improve its opto-electrical properties including bandgap and optical conductivity using direct ultrafast pulsed nanostructure formation (DUPNF). The power and frequency of high-intensity picosecond laser pulses were varied, and nanostructures were formed. The optical properties were examined using optical spectroscopy in both VIS and NIR. The structural characteristics were examined using EDX and SEM imaging. It was found that varying the power and frequency of the laser processing caused a change in the bandgap, as well as the structural characteristics of the silicon semiconductor. Increasing the frequency and power showed the formation of nanostructures of silicon and their variation in the properties of the formed nanostructures. The critical breakdown field of the silicon nanostructures was higher than the bulk silicon.

Valorising Nutrient-Rich Digestate as a Waste-Based Media for Microalgal Cultivation: Bench-Scale Filtration Characterisation and Scale-Up for a Commercial Recovery Process
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: algae, characterisation, cleaning, digestate, filtration, nutrient, scale-up
Cultivating microalgae requires a nitrogen and phosphorous feed source. Anaerobic digestion waste (digestate) provides a cheap sustainable feedstock for these materials. Previous studies have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of nutrient recovery and subsequent algae growth. There is now a need to fully characterise digestate filtration to improve our understanding of this process prior to its commercialisation. In this work, digestate filtration is characterised at bench scale using frontal (dead-end) filtration and a 100 kDa MWCO ultrafiltration membrane. Our experiments demonstrated rapid cake formation causing significant flux decline. The steady-state permeate flux for digestate was 2.4 to 4.8 L m−2 h−1, a reduction of ~90% compared to clean water flux. Subject: Materials
Keywords: amorphous, anode, electrochemical performance, Fe2O3, lithium-ion battery
Based on the synergistic effect of ripening and hydrogen ion etching in a hydrothermal solution, a simple, facile, and low-cost new strategy was demonstrated to prepare multi-channel surface-modified amorphous Fe2O3 nanospheres as anodes for Li-ion batteries in this study. Compared with polycrystalline Fe2O3, the conversion reaction between amorphous Fe2O3 and lithium ions has a lower Gibbs free energy change and a stronger reversibility, which can contribute to an elevation in the cycle capability of the electrode. Meanwhile, there are abundant active sites and more effective dangling bonds/defects in amorphous materials, which is beneficial to promote charge transfer and lithium-ion migration kinetics. Solar Photovoltaic Modules’ Performance Reliability and Degradation Analysis—A Review
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: characterization, data-driven analytics, degradation, Machine Learning, photovoltaics
The current geometric increase in the global deployment of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules, both at utility-scale and residential roof-top systems, is majorly attributed to its affordability, scalability, long-term warranty and, most importantly, the continuous reduction in the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) of solar PV in numerous countries. In addition, PV deployment is expected to continue this growth trend as energy portfolio globally shifts towards cleaner energy technologies. However, irrespective of the PV module type/material and component technology, the modules are exposed to a wide range of environmental conditions during outdoor deployment. Oftentimes, these environmental conditions are extreme for the modules and subject them to harsh chemical, photo-chemical and thermo-mechanical stress. Asides from manufacturing defects, these conditions contribute immensely to PV module’s aging rate, defects and degradation. Therefore, in recent times, there has been various inves... [more]

Biorefineries are industrial facilities where biomass is converted into chemicals, fuels and energy. The use of lignocellulose as raw material implies the development of pretreatments to reduce its recalcitrant character prior to the processes that lead to the synthesis of the products of interest. These treatments are based on physico-chemical processes where it is necessary to use acids, bases, oxidants, and high pressure and temperature conditions that lead to the depolymerization of lignocellulose at the expense of generating a series of streams that must be treated later or to the production of by-products. In recent years, mechanochemistry is becoming relevant in the design of processes that help in the depolymerization of lignocellulose. These mechanochemical processes are being used in combination with chemicals and/or enzymes, allowing the use of minor loads of reagents or enzymes.
