On Distributional Effects in Local Electricity Market Designs—Evidence from a German Case Study
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: distributional effects, electricity market design, energy communities, local energy sharing, mixed complementarity problem (MCP), peer-to-peer trading
The European Commission’s call for energy communities has motivated academia to focus research on design and trading concepts of local electricity markets. The literature provides a wide range of conceptual ideas and analyses on the technical and economic framework of single market features such as peer-to-peer trading. The feasible, system-wide integration of energy communities into existing market structures requires, however, a set of legal adjustments to national regulation. In this paper, we test the implications of recently proposed market designs under the current rules in the context of the German market. The analysis is facilitated by a simplistic equilibrium model representing heterogeneous market participants in an energy community with their respective objectives. We find that, on the one hand, these proposed designs are financially unattractive to prosumers and consumers under the current regulatory framework. On the other hand, they even cause distributional effects withi... [more]

Impact of Core Sheet Cutting Method on Parameters of Induction Motors
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: cutting method, induction motors, motor efficiency
The method of cutting motor core sheets causes a change in their magnetic properties and core losses, especially additional losses. Reducing motor losses is very important because of the fulfillment of increasingly stringent requirements set by international regulations for reducing electricity consumption. Due to fact that more and more often induction motors are supplied with high-frequency voltage, core losses are beginning to play a dominant role in the motor’s loss balance. That is why accurate determination of these losses is very important and cutting has a significant impact on them. This report shows how the method of cutting sheet metal affects losses in the finished induction motor working in a wide frequency range. The paper presents the impact of various motor core fabrication technologies on its operational parameters and an approximate way of including this impact in analytical calculations at the design stage of new machine designs, as it is necessary to use sheet metal... Low-Cost Solar Electricity Using Stationary Solar Fields; Technology Potential and Practical Implementation Challenges to Be Overcome. Outcomes from H2020 MOSAIC Project
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: CSP, Fresnel, solar, spherical concentrator, stationary reflector, tracking absorber
At any time of the day, a spherical mirror reflects the rays coming from the sun along a line that points to the sun through the center of the sphere. This makes it possible to build concentrated solar power(CSP) plants with fixed solar fields and mobile receivers; that is, solar fields can be significantly cheaper and simpler, but challenging tracking systems for the mobile receiver need to be implemented. The cost-cutting possibilities for this technology have been under-researched. This article describes the MOSAIC concept, which aims to achieve low-cost solar energy by boosting the benefits of spherical reflectors while addressing their challenges. This new concept proposes to build large modular plants from semi-Fresnel solar bowls. One of these modules has been designed and is under construction in Spain. This article reports the main lessons learned during the design phase, describes the advantages and challenges of the concept, details the proposed routes to overcome them, and... [more]

Design Method of Dual Active Bridge Converters for Photovoltaic Systems with High Voltage Gain
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: DAB Converter, high-frequency link, Leakage inductor, MPPT, photovoltaic system
In this paper, a design method for a photovoltaic system based on a dual active bridge converter and a photovoltaic module is proposed. The method is supported by analytical results and theoretical predictions, which are confirmed with circuital simulations. The analytical development, the theoretical predictions, and the validation through circuital simulations, are the main contributions of the paper. The dual active bridge converter is selected due to its high efficiency, high input and output voltages range, and high voltage-conversion ratio, which enables the interface of low-voltage photovoltaic modules with a high-voltage dc bus, such as the input of a micro-inverter. To propose the design method, the circuital analysis of the dual active bridge converter is performed to describe the general waveforms derived from the circuit behavior. Then, the analysis of the dual active bridge converter, interacting with a photovoltaic module driven by a maximum power point tracking algorithm... [more]

A Bi-Layer Multi-Objective Techno-Economical Optimization Model for Optimal Integration of Distributed Energy Resources into Smart/Micro Grids
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: demand response, electric vehicle, Energy Storage, microgrid, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The energy management system is executed in microgrids for optimal integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) into the power distribution grids. To this end, various strategies have been more focused on cost reduction, whereas effectively both economic and technical indices/factors have to be considered simultaneously. Therefore, in this paper, a two-layer optimization model is proposed to minimize the operation costs, voltage fluctuations, and power losses of smart microgrids. In the outer-layer, the size and capacity of DERs including renewable energy sources (RES), electric vehicles (EV) charging stations and energy storage systems (ESS), are obtained simultaneously. The inner-layer corresponds to the scheduled operation of EVs and ESSs using an integrated coordination model (ICM). The ICM is a fuzzy interface that has been adopted to address the multi-objectivity of the cost function developed based on hourly demand response, state of charges of EVs and ESS, and electricity... Analysis and Design of Three-Phase Buck Rectifier Employing UPS to Supply High Reliable DC Power
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: DC distribution system, dual-active-bridge DC-DC converter, three-phase buck rectifier, UPS
In the DC distribution system, to step down the DC voltage level from the AC grid voltage, the conventional topologies require multiple power conversion stages and bulky line-frequency transformers, which degrade their power density and cost-effectiveness. In addition, the conventional topologies suffer from a shoot-through problem resulting in their low system reliability. In this paper, to overcome the above issues, systematic design approaches of a three-phase buck rectifier with an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and a protection algorithm are proposed to obtain the high reliability of the DC distribution system, which can deal with fault conditions and can regulate the output voltage level. It only requires a single stage of the three-phase buck rectifier. Also, a thyristor switch is added without any commutation circuits to cut off the output from the fault circuit. The shoot-through faults do not occur in the buck rectifier, leading to high reliability. A dual-active-bridge (... [more]

Multi-Physics Tool for Electrical Machine Sizing
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: electrical machines, electromagnetic model, permanent magnet, sizing methodology, thermal model
Society is turning to electrification to reduce air pollution, increasing electric machine demand. For industrial mass production, a detailed design of one machine is usually done first, then a design of similar machines, but different ratings are reached by geometry scaling. This design process may be highly time-consuming, so, in this paper, a new sizing method is proposed to reduce this time, maintaining accuracy. It is based on magnetic flux and thermal maps, both linked with an algorithm so that the sizing process of an electrical machine can be carried out in less than one minute. The magnetic flux maps are obtained by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and the thermal maps are obtained by analytical models based on Lumped Parameter Circuits (LPC), applying a time-efficient procedure. The proposed methodology is validated in a real case study, sizing 10 different industrial machines. Then, the accuracy of the sizing tool is validated performing the experimental test over the 10 machin... [more]

Cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris in a Light-Receiving-Plate (LRP)-Enhanced Raceway Pond for Ammonium and Phosphorus Removal from Pretreated Pig Urine
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: Chlorella vulgaris, chlorophyll fluorescence, hydraulic retention time, nutrient removal, photosynthetic reactor, pig urine
Fresh pig urine is unsuitable for microalgae cultivation due to its high concentrations of NH4+-N, high pH and insufficient magnesium. In this study, fresh pig urine was pretreated by dilution, pH adjustment, and magnesium addition in order to polish wastewater and produce microalgae biomass. Chlorella vulgaris was cultured in an in-house-designed light-receiving-plate (LRP)-enhanced raceway pond to treat the pretreated pig urine in both batch and continuous mode under outdoor conditions. NH4+-N and TP in wastewater were detected, and the growth of C. vulgaris was evaluated by chlorophyll fluorescence activity as well as biomass production. Results indicated that an 8-fold dilution, pH adjusted to 6.0 and MgSO4·7H2O dosage of 0.1 mg·L−1 would be optimal for the pig urine pretreatment. C. vulgaris could stably accumulate biomass in the LRP-enhanced raceway pond when cultured by both BG11 medium and the pretreated pig urine. About 1.72 g·m−2·day−1 of microalgal biomass could be produced... [more]

Techno-Economic Evaluation of Interconnected Nuclear-Renewable Micro Hybrid Energy Systems with Combined Heat and Power
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: combined heat and power, hybrid energy system, nuclear power plant, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Renewable energy sources (RESs) play an indispensable role in sustainable advancement by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Nevertheless, due to the shortcomings of RESs, an energy mix with RESs is required to support the baseload and to avoid the effects of RES variability. Fossil fuel-based thermal generators (FFTGs), like diesel generators, have been used with RESs to support the baseload. However, using FFTGs with RESs is not a good option to reduce GHG emissions. Hence, the small-scale nuclear power plant (NPPs), such as the micro-modular reactor (MMR), have become a modern alternative to FFTGs. In this paper, the authors have investigated five different hybrid energy systems (HES) with combined heat and power (CHP), named ‘conventional small-scale fossil fuel-based thermal energy system,’ ‘small-scale stand-alone RESs-based energy system,’ ‘conventional small-scale fossil fuel-based thermal and RESs-based HES,’ ‘small-scale stand-alone nuclear energy system,’ and ‘nuclear-r... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: decomposition, differential evolution, hybrid energy system, parameter adaptive mechanism, techno-economic optimization
Techno-economic optimization of a standalone solar/wind/battery hybrid system located in Xining, China, is the focus of this paper, and reliable and economic indicators are simultaneously employed to address the problem. To obtain a more precise Pareto set, a novel multi-objective differential evolution algorithm is proposed, where differential evolution with a parameter-adaptive mechanism is applied in the decomposition framework. The algorithm effectiveness is verified by performance comparisons on the benchmark test problems with two reference algorithms: a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm and a multi-objective evolution algorithm based on decomposition. The applicability of the proposed algorithm for the capacity-optimization problem is also validated by comparisons with the same reference algorithms above, where the true Pareto set of the problem is approximated by combining of the three algorithms through the non-dominant relationship. A Field Experiment on Wave Forces on an Energy-Absorbing Breakwater
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: absorption coefficient, caisson breakwater, field experiment, Goda’s formula, Oscillating Water Column, pressure distribution, wave loads
The U-OWC is a caisson breakwater embodying a device for wave energy absorption. Under the wave action, the pressure acting on the upper opening of the vertical duct fluctuates, producing a water discharge alternatively entering/exiting the plant through the U-duct, formed by the duct and the chamber. The interaction between incoming waves and the water discharge alters the wave pressure distribution along the wave-beaten wall of this breakwater compared with the pressure distributions on a vertical pure reflecting wall. As a consequence, the horizontal wave forces produced on the breakwater are also different. A small scale U-OWC breakwater was put off the eastern coast of the Strait of Messina (Southern Italy) to measure the horizontal wave force. Experimental results were compared with Boccotti’s and Goda’s wave pressure formulas, carried out for conventional upright breakwaters, to check their applicability on the U-OWC breakwaters. Both models are suitable for design of U-OWC brea... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: BEopt, building design, cost-optimal analysis, economic projections
Cost-optimal analysis was pointed out in the 2010/31 European Directive as a tool to evaluate the achievable building energy performance levels as a function of the corresponding costs. These analyses can be carried out by a financial projection for private investors and a macroeconomic approach to establish the minimal energy performance levels. Consequently, the financial projection provides different results that could stimulate private investors toward other cost-optimal solutions that do not match the minimal energy performance levels. For this purpose, both the projections were analyzed in the BEopt environment, developed by NREL, on a multistory building located in two contrasting climatic zones of the Mediterranean area, one cold and the other warm, highlighting the differences.
