Keywords: aeration rate, biodrying, mechanical biological treatment, municipal solid waste, RDF
Biodrying is an essential part of the mechanical−biological treatment process that minimizes moisture content and simultaneously maximizes heating value for refuse-derived fuel (RDF) production. Although the mechanical separation process operates effectively in Thailand’s RDF production, high organic content levels and their degradation cause moisture contamination in RDF, producing wet RDF. Aeration is essential for an effective biodrying process, and can reduce RDF’s moisture content as well as increase its heating value. To maximize the biodrying effect, aeration should be optimized based on the waste conditions. This study proposes a modified aeration-supplied configuration for wet RDF biodrying. The aeration rate was modified based on the period within the biodrying operation; the first period is from the beginning until day 2.5, and the second period is from day 2.5 to day 5. The optimal aeration supply configuration was 0.5 m3/kg/day in the first period and then 0.3 m3/kg/day un... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biomethane, Carbon Dioxide, economic analysis, process simulation, succinic acid
Succinic acid (SA) is a valuable platform chemical that can be converted into biodegradable plastics, resins, solvents, etc. The emerging biological routes for SA production are gaining more attention because they exploit the natural abilities of bacteria to fixate carbon dioxide (CO2). On the other hand, an inexpensive organic carbon source that can fulfill the energetic requirements of the microbial strain is also a significant challenge for industrial SA production. The current work presents a holistic techno-economic analysis of SA production using sugar-rich residual streams and biogas as raw materials. Simulation results showed that by establishing an integrated process, high SA production can be simultaneously achieved with biogas upgrading. The CO2 provided from biogas and carbohydrates, which are provided from organic by-products is converted into two products: biomethane (CH4 > 95%, a clean biofuel), and SA. The mass and energy balances and techno-economic indicators were sim... [more]

Keywords: light-water reactors, retrofit decarbonization, small modular reactors, steam turbine modernization, techno-economic assessment
This article presents the results of a techno-economic analysis of repowering a coal-fired power plant’s steam turbine system to instead accept heat produced by a pressurized water reactor-type small modular nuclear system (PWR SMR). This type of repowering presents a challenge due to the significantly lower steam pressure and temperature produced by the nuclear system. A 460 MW supercritical power unit with steam parameters of 28 MPa/560 °C/580 °C, operated in the Łagisza Power Plant in Poland, was selected for the analysis. After repowering, the turbine system would be fed with saturated steam from the steam generators of the SMRs at a pressure of 7 MPa and a temperature of 285 °C. In total, four options for repowering were analyzed. In all cases, the existing high-pressure section of the turbine was disconnected, and the existing low-pressure stages of the turbine, as well as all auxiliary and outward components (feedwater heaters, pumps, generator, condenser, condenser cooling, etc... April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: airborne wind energy, fluid-structure interaction, lifting line method, membrane structures, particle system model, vortex step method
Soft-wing kites for airborne wind-energy harvesting function as flying tensile membrane structures, each of whose shape depends on the aerodynamic load distribution and vice versa. The strong two-way coupling between shape and loading poses a complex fluid-structure interaction problem. Since computational models for such problems do not yet meet the requirements of being accurate and at the same time fast, kite designers usually work on the basis of intuition and experience, combined with extensive iterative flight testing. This paper presents a fast aero-structural model of leading-edge inflatable kites for the design phase of airborne wind-energy systems. The fluid-structure interaction solver couples two fast and modular models: a particle system model to capture the deformation of the wing and bridle-line system and a 3D nonlinear vortex step method coupled with viscous 2D airfoil polars to describe the aerodynamics. The flow solver was validated with several wing geometries and p... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic performance, economic performance, gear-shifting strategy, pure electric vehicle, two-speed automatic transmission
The two-speed automatic transmission can adjust the drive motor speed of electric vehicles and expand their output torque range. This study proposes a rule-based partitioned gear-shifting strategy for pure electric vehicles equipped with a two-speed dual-clutch transmission, combining economic and dynamic shifting strategies to ensure low energy consumption and strong power. Specifically, fuzzy logic is applied to adaptively modify the partition shifting strategy online, to reduce invalid gearshifts, increase the service life of the transmission, and improve driving comfort. Finally, we compare the economic performance and dynamic performance of pure electric vehicles equipped with a two-speed dual-clutch transmission and a single-speed final drive. The results show that the vehicle equipped with the two-speed dual-clutch transmission has better economic and dynamic performance. In addition, its maximum climbing ability was verified by rig testing. These results prove that the two-spee... [more]

Tomasz Lerch
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cogging machine, PMSM design parameters, power density, torque density, transverse flux machine
The cogging machine is a new design of a machine with permanent magnets, which combines the advantages of a machine with transverse flux (TFM), eliminating its disadvantages. The biggest advantage of TFM machines is their high torque density, which varies with the design parameters. The developed machine retains these advantages while simplifying the construction of the stator core, which is the biggest disadvantage of TFM machines. This article presents the results of an analysis of the power density of the developed cogging machine as a function of a number of pole pairs and the basic design parameters. Analyses were carried out on the basis of the derived analytical equations, which make the generated torque depend on the construction parameters. Thanks to the derived dependencies, one can easily examine the effects of modifying the machine structure. The results presented in the article prove that the developed design of the cogging machine is competitive in relation to machines wi... [more]

Keywords: moisture gain, non-guaranteed hour, TMY, typical transition season method, ventilation rate
The natatorium’s ventilation problem receives much concern because of its large wet load. The outdoor humidity ratio in transition season is the basic design parameter of the ventilation calculation, directly affecting the rationality of architectural design. At present, the ventilation-curve (V-C) method is the most widely used method to determine the outdoor humidity ratio in the transition season in China. However, due to failing to reflect non-guaranteed hours, the rationality of this value is difficult to assess by employing this approach. This paper presents a new method, the typical transition season method (TTS), for determining the outdoor humidity ratio in the transition season of a natatorium. The TTS method selects the transition season based on the typical meteorological year (TMY) data and calculates the outdoor humidity ratio with multiple non-guaranteed hours. This can well-represent the local perennial climate characteristics and clearly reflect the non-guaranteed hour... [more]

Keywords: boost power converter, buck–boost power converter, common-ground power converter, DC-AC power converter, DC-DC power converter, leakage current
The focus of this paper is to provide a comparative analysis of various common-ground converters that serve as dual-purpose power electronic interfaces. These interfaces are designed to be used in both DC and single-phase AC grids, utilizing the same terminals for both modes of operation. The idea lies in the utilization of the same semiconductors in the DC-DC and DC-AC configurations, resulting in minimal redundancy. Particular attention is focused on the comparative evaluation approach. A novel Flying Inductor (FI)-based converter was selected for experimental verification. The design example and experimental prototype of a dual-purpose DC-DC/AC power electronic converter is capable of providing 2 kVA of power in AC mode and 4 kW in DC mode. The experimental results indicate that the converter can operate in both AC and DC grids according to their respective modes. The conclusion of the study highlights the potential applications and main benefits of this technology.

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: airborne wind energy, inflatable structures, inflatable wings, Jacquard weaving, one-piece woven, pressure vessels
Inflatable wings are of interest for applications where low weight, compact transport volume, and easy set-up are important. Examples are unmanned aerial vehicles with inflatable wings, paragliders and softkites for sport or airborne wind-energy applications. In this paper, a new method of designing and fabricating conformable inflatable wings by Jacquard three-dimensional weaving is presented. Depending on the weaving pattern, plane-parallel, tapered, or even curved structures can be produced. An analytical framework was developed to determine the shapes of pressurized structures produced by Jacquard weaving. Based on this theory, several design patterns suitable for inflatable wings are proposed. It is shown that the structural efficiency of the woven structure is identical to the structural efficiency of a cylinder. To validate the concept, different wing prototypes were built with the methods used for the mass production of airbags. The new method allows for the cost-efficient fabr... [more]

Keywords: permanent-magnet synchronous generator, Taguchi method, wave power generation
In this paper, the design and performance analysis of a high-efficiency permanent-magnet synchronous wave generator (PSWG) are presented. A systematic approach for the design of the outer rotor was proposed as a prototype model. The magnetic field, magnetic circuit characteristics, electrical characteristics of the generator, and optimal design parameters such as the pole−arc ratio and shoe outer length were determined using the Taguchi method, finite-element analysis (FEA) software, and rotor skewing techniques. The proposed six series and six parallel-connection winding configurations can provide an evenly distributed current for practical applications. A PSWG was designed and fabricated according to the proposed methodology. According to the experimental results by implementing the optimized design, the efficiencies of the proposed PSWG which used 3.6 Ω load at 300 rpm is 86.32% and the efficiency error between simulation and experiment is less than 1.8%. It verifies the feasibility... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery storage, residential solar photovoltaic, self-consumption, self-sufficiency, Spain, Technoeconomic Analysis
In recent years, solar price drops and regulations have helped residential users to invest in grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) facilities. In Spain, a novel law promotes self-consumption by discounting electricity fed into the grid from the utility bill. However, the performance of PV-based facilities depends on diverse factors. The contribution of this paper is to evaluate the techno-economic performance of such installations for different considerations linked to the Spanish law. A simulation model is used to examine different representative cities, load profiles and alternative objectives: maximising profitability and self-sufficiency. For profit maximisation, results show that load profile variations entail PV size changes up to 5 kWp for the same location, together with huge economic and self-sufficiency differences. In contrast, the solar radiation and compensation rate have a more limited influence. For self-sufficiency maximisation, the economic performance drops close to EUR 0... [more]

Keywords: Biomass, combustion, decomposition, Modelling, numerical simulation
Identifying a modeling procedure of biomass thermal decomposition that is not only simple enough to implement and use, and computationally efficient, but also sufficiently accurate for engineering design activities, and with a spectrum of applications as broad as possible is a very difficult task. The authors propose a procedure which consists of two main stages: (a) the static modeling phase with the purpose of generating the algorithm (macro functions) that supplies a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model with specific input data (source/sink terms and local material properties) and (b) the dynamic modeling phase, where the CFD model is bi-directionally coupled to the external biomass decomposition model in the form of a User-Defined Function (UDF). The modeling approach was successfully validated against data obtained from single particle decomposition experiments, demonstrating its applicability even to large biomass particles, under high heating rates and combusting conditions.

Keywords: additive manufacturing, asymmetry in machines, conventional electrical machines, electrical machine design, future electrical machines, metal 3D-printing, non-conventional electrical machines
This paper presents current research trends and prospects of utilizing additive manufacturing (AM) techniques to manufacture electrical machines. Modern-day machine applications require extraordinary performance parameters such as high power-density, integrated functionalities, improved thermal, mechanical & electromagnetic properties. AM offers a higher degree of design flexibility to achieve these performance parameters, which is impossible to realize through conventional manufacturing techniques. AM has a lot to offer in every aspect of machine fabrication, such that from size/weight reduction to the realization of complex geometric designs. However, some practical limitations of existing AM techniques restrict their utilization in large scale production industry. The introduction of three-dimensional asymmetry in machine design is an aspect that can be exploited most with the prevalent level of research in AM. In order to take one step further towards the enablement of large-scale... [more]

Keywords: anaerobic digestion, animal by-products, biogas production, hygienization, indicator bacteria, pulsed electric field, thermal pasteurization
Animal by-products (ABP) can be valorized via anaerobic digestion (AD) for biogas energy generation. The digestate issued from AD process is usually used to fertilize farming land for agricultural activities, which may cause potential sanitary risk to the environment. The European Union (EU) requires that certain ABP be thermally pasteurized in order to minimize this sanitary risk. This process is called hygienization, which can be replaced by alternative nonthermal technologies like pulsed electric field (PEF). In the present study, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 19433 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 were used as indicator bacteria. Their resistance to thermal pasteurization and PEF treatment were characterized. Results show that Ent. faecalis and E. coli are reduced by 5 log10 in less than 1 min during thermal pasteurization at 70 °C. The critical electric field strength was estimated at 18 kV∙cm−1 for Ent. faecalis and 1 kV∙cm−1 for E. coli. “G+” bacteria Ent. faecalis are generally mor... [more]

Keywords: decommissioning, life extension, offshore structures, repowering, wind power
The aim of this study is to look into the current information surrounding decommissioning and life extension strategies in the offshore wind sector and critically assess them to make informed decisions upon completion of the initial design life in offshore wind farms. This was done through a two-pronged approach by looking into the technical aspects through comprehensive discussions with industrial specialists in the field and also looking into similar but more mature industries such as the Offshore Oil and Gas sector. For the financial side of the assessment, a financial model was constructed to help portray a possible outcome to extend the life for a current offshore wind farm, using the existing data. By employing a techno-economic approach for critical assessment of life extension strategies, this study demonstrates the advantages and disadvantages of each strategy and looks to inform the offshore wind industry the best course of action for current wind farms, depending on their si... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current transformers accuracy, finite element method, split-core
The current transformers with split-core are used for installation in places where it is impossible to install classic current transformers. Moreover, this design allows for any measurement location change, and even switching one current transformer into several different shapes of bars or cables. Power network operators, striving for more accurate current measurements, require producers to provide current transformers with a special accuracy class 0.2S. Therefore, manufacturers and designers try to meet the market requirements and, similarly to non-demountable current transformers, i.e., with a toroidal core, design current transformers with split-core class 0.2S. To meet the high metrological requirements, 3D analyses of electromagnetic fields were performed, taking into account physical phenomena and not approximate analytical models. Two types of cores and four different arrangements of the secondary windings of the measuring current transformers were considered. The magnetic field... [more]

The European Union aims to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 55% before 2030 compared to 1990 as a reference year. One of the main contributions to GHG emissions comes from the household sector. This paper shows that the household sector, when organised into a form of prosumer microgrids, including renewable sources for electric, heating and cooling energy supply, can be efficiently decarbonised. This paper investigates one hypothetical prosumer microgrid with the model RES2GEO (Renewable Energy Sources to Geothermal). The aim is to integrate a carbon-free photovoltaic electricity source and a shallow geothermal reservoir as a heat source and heat sink during the heating and cooling season. A total of four cases have been evaluated for the Zagreb City location. The results represent a balance of both thermal and electric energy flows within the microgrid, as well as thermal recuperation of the reservoir. The levelised cost of energy for all cases, based on a 20-year modelling ho... [more]

Keywords: complex fenestration systems, daylight, discomfort glare, radiance, restaurants, visual comfort
This work deals with daylighting for quality indoor atmospheres, considering building skins. In recent years, almost all retrofit facades of restaurants are highly glazed façades, boosting glare, sun ray absorption and overheating inside. Most of the time, they are not integrated with daylight control; therefore, lighting and out view requirements are not so balanced. Taking into account this daylighting complexity, an alternative façade system is proposed to simulate by Radiance. Previously, perception simulations are compared with measured data, in order to discretize the simulations. In addition, for one point three different view are assessed as: work plane, relation plane and the out plane. Subsequently, two virtual façade models, windows combined by complex fenestration system (CFS) as prismatic film (PF) and highly glazed façade, are tested according to daylighting. For that, three indexes have been used: daylight glare probability (DGP), daylight glare index (DGI) and daylight... [more]

Keywords: adopter characteristics, consumer segment, electric vehicle, EV, incentive design, outreach strategy
To expand markets for plug-in electric vehicles (EVs) beyond enthusiastic early adopters, investments must be strategic. This research characterizes a segment of EV adoption that points the way toward the mainstream: EV consumers with low or no initial interest in EVs, or “EV Converts.” Logistic regression is utilized to profile EV Convert demographic, household, and regional characteristics; vehicle-transaction details; and purchase motivations—based on 2016−2017 survey data characterizing 5447 rebated California EV consumers. Explanatory factors are rank-ordered—separately for battery EVs (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid EVs (PHEVs), to inform targeted outreach and incentive design. EV Converts tend to have relatively “lower” values on factors that might have otherwise “pre-converted” them to EV interest: hours researching EVs online; motivation from environmental impacts and carpool-lane access; and solar ownership. PHEV Converts more closely resemble new-car buyers than other EV adopters,... [more]

Keywords: distributed temperature sensor, ground thermal conductivity, groundwater flow, history matching, moving line heat source theory, thermal response test
The variability of ground thermal conductivity, based on underground conditions, is often ignored during the design of ground-source heat pump systems. This study shows a field evidence of such site-scale variations through thermal response tests in eight borehole heat exchangers aligned at a site on a terrace along the foothills of mountains in northern Japan. Conventional analysis of the overall ground thermal conductivity along the total installation length finds that the value at one borehole heat exchanger is 2.5 times that at the other seven boreholes. History matching analysis of underground distributed temperature measurements generates vertical partial ground thermal conductivity data for four depth layers. Based on the moving line heat source theory, the partial values are generally within a narrow range expected for gravel deposits. Darcy velocities of groundwater are estimated to be 74−204 m/y at the borehole with high conductivity, increasing in the shallow layers above a... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cellulose, fast pyrolysis, glycolaldehyde, infrared heating, levoglucosan
The fast pyrolysis of cellulose produces levoglucosan (LG), but secondary pyrolysis reactions tend to reduce the yield. The present study assessed the fast pyrolysis of cellulose by infrared (IR) heating under nitrogen flow. Because the nitrogen was not efficiently heated, gaseous LG was immediately cooled, resulting in a maximum yield of 52.7% under optimized conditions. Slow nitrogen flow and a high IR power level provided a greater gas yield by raising the temperature of the cellulose, and the formation of CO could be used as an indicator of the gasification of LG. Glycolaldehyde (GA) was the major byproduct, and the GA yield remained relatively constant under all conditions. Accordingly, GA was not a secondary product from the LG but was likely produced from the reducing ends of cellulose and other intermediate carbohydrates. The pyrolysis of cellulose proceeded within a narrow region of carbonized material that absorbed IR radiation more efficiently. The bulk of each cellulose sam... [more]
