Hierarchical Manganese−Iron-Layered Double Hydroxide Nanosheets for Asymmetric Supercapacitors
Dipali S. Patil, Sachin A. Pawar, Hyo Jin Kim, Jae Cheol Shin
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: asymmetric supercapacitor, hydrothermal, layered double hydroxide, MnFe
This work presents a synthesis of hierarchical manganese−iron-layered double hydroxide (MnFe-LDH) nanostructured electrodes using the hydrothermal synthesis route by varying the reaction time for electrochemical energy storage applications. The electrochemical behavior of the MnFe-LDH electrodes synthesized at different reaction times was analyzed in a three-electrode cell configuration using 2 M KOH electrolyte. The uniform and well-organized MnFe-LDH nanosheet electrode (MnFe-12h) showed the maximum areal capacitance of 2013 mFcm−2 at a 5 mVs−1 scan rate, and 1886 mFcm−2 at a 25 mA applied current. Furthermore, the electrochemical behavior of MnFe-12h was examined by assembling an asymmetric cell device using activated carbon (AC) as a negative electrode and MnFe-12h as a positive electrode and it was tested in a wide voltage window range of 0.0 to 1.6 V. This asymmetric cell device achieved an appropriate energy density of 44.9 µW h cm−2 (55.01 W h kg−1), with a power density of 16... [more]
Degraded Trees from Spruce Budworm Epidemics as Bioenergy Feedstock: A Profitability Analysis of Forest Operations
Mathieu Béland, Evelyne Thiffault, Julie Barrette, Warren Mabee
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: costs, forest biomass, natural disturbances, silviculture, wood pellets
Natural disturbances are common in Canadian boreal managed forests. For example, during and after insect epidemics, foresters must deal with significant amounts of degraded or dead wood that cannot be processed into sawn timber or pulp. Bioenergy could be an alternative pathway for this wood. A case study in Quebec (Canada) was used to evaluate the profitability of pellet production for bioenergy using degraded trees from insect epidemics. A bioenergy scenario was simulated in which degraded trees were harvested for bioenergy alongside sound wood for timber and pulp. This scenario was compared to a reference scenario in which degraded trees were left on cutovers. Using wood pellets as a case study, the results showed that at current market prices, harvesting degraded trees for pellet production is not as profitable as leaving them in the forest. Nevertheless, the overall forest operations for procuring wood for timber and pulp were still profitable, even with very high degradation leve... [more]
Heterogenic Autotuner for Electro-Pneumatic Single-Action Actuators
Michał Bartyś
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actuator, analytical model, auto-tuner, electro-pneumatic final control element, fluid mechanics, heterogenic tuning, heuristics, PID controller, positioner, single action pneumatic actuator
The main concept is to design the novel autotuner in a way that it will introduce benefits that arise from the effect of the fusion of the quantitative and qualitative knowledge gained from identification experiments, long-time expertise, and theoretical findings. The novelty of this approach is in the manner in which the expert heuristic knowledge is used for the development of an easy-to-use and time-efficient tuning process. In the proposed approach, the positioner simply learns, mimics, and follows up the tuning process that is performed by an experienced human operator. The major strength of this approach is that all parameters of positioner PID controller can be estimated by only identifying one single parameter that is the effective time constant of the pneumatic actuator. The elaborated autotuning algorithm is experimentally examined with different commercially available pneumatic actuators and control valves. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed autotuning approa... [more]

Keywords: comfort of use, digital modelling, energy performance, historic structure, thermovision, U thermal transmittance measurements
The paper discusses thermal quality improvement in historic buildings. It is based on a case study of a wooden historical building in an architectural style typical of Zakopane, located in the Podhale region of Poland. The building’s historical value and timber structure prevent the application of typical thermal retrofitting solutions. This paper presents an analysis of the possibilities of the improvement of energy performance of a historic building (villa) which included: a review of the available energy performance improvement solutions applicable to this type of building, with a particular focus on applying internal insulation; a technical condition assessment using non-invasive methods, the identification of problematic areas in terms of the thermal retrofitting of buildings with timber walls and decks; in situ tests: thermovision tests which showed the places with temperature distribution field disturbances in the building’s envelope, focusing on thermal bridges; measurements of... April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 4H-SiC, body diode, double trench, free-wheeling diode, heterojunction diode, MOSFET, reverse recovery, switching loss
In this study, a novel 4H-SiC double-trench metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) with a side wall heterojunction diode is proposed and investigated by conducting numerical technology computer-aided design simulations. The junction between P+ polysilicon and the N-drift layer forming a heterojunction diode on the side wall of the source trench region suppresses the operation of the PiN body diode during the reverse conduction state. Therefore, the injected minority carriers are completely suppressed, reducing the reverse recovery current by 73%, compared to the PiN body diodes. The switching characteristics of the proposed MOSFET using the heterojunction diode as a freewheeling diode was compared to the power module with a conventional MOSFET and an external diode as a freewheeling diode. It is shown that the switching performance of the proposed structure exhibits equivalent characteristics compared to the power module, enabling the elimination of an external free... [more]
On the Participation of Power-To-Heat Assets in Frequency Regulation Markets—A Danish Case Study
Florin Iov, Mahmood Khatibi, Jan Dimon Bendtsen
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: district heating systems, frequency regulation, model based design, power-to-heat assets, real-time control hardware-in-the-loop, smart grid architecture model
Due to the new green energy policies, district heating companies are being increasingly encouraged to exploit power-to-heat assets, e.g., heat pumps and electric boilers, in their distribution networks besides the traditional central combined heat and power units. The increased utilization of these assets will generate a more complex interaction between power distribution grids and district heating networks including markets for provision of ancillary services. Enabling the participation of power-to-heat units in the ancillary service markets, e.g., frequency reserves, may increase the revenue streams for assets’ owners. However, some technical challenges must first be addressed, including optimization of portfolios of assets that accounts for ancillary service markets, new coordination and operational schemes for portfolio of assets, increase data exchange and interactions with transmission system operators, and new local control schemes for units. This paper proposes a systematic mod... [more]

Jian Zhang, Mingjian Cui, Yigang He
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: improved GLPSO hybrid algorithm, parameter identification, PMSG, trajectory sensitivity
As wind farms have great influences on power system stability, it is essential to develop an adaptive as well as robust equivalent model of it. In this paper, a detailed equivalent model of PMSG wind farm and initialization method is developed. The trajectory sensitivity of parameters is analyzed. Then, the key parameters are estimated using improved Genetic Learning Particle Swarm Optimization (GLPSO) hybrid algorithm with phasor measurement unit (PMU). The description and generalization capability, stability for parameter identification of the equivalent model under wake effects, and when some wind turbines are off-line or wind speed is unknown after an event are analyzed. The maximum differences between the values of estimated parameters and their real ones are less than 10% for the proportional magnification constant of DC voltage controller Kp2 and grid side current controller Kp3. The convergence rate and global optimization performance of the improved GLPSO hybrid algorithm is 0... [more]
Elastic and Frictional Properties of Fault Zones in Reservoir-Scale Hydro-Mechanical Models—A Sensitivity Study
Torben Treffeisen, Andreas Henk
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: faults, finite element modelling, hydro-mechanical modelling, reservoir
The proper representation of faults in coupled hydro-mechanical reservoir models is challenged, among others, by the difference between the small-scale heterogeneity of fault zones observed in nature and the large size of the calculation cells in numerical simulations. In the present study we use a generic finite element (FE) model with a volumetric fault zone description to examine what effect the corresponding upscaled material parameters have on pore pressures, stresses, and deformation within and surrounding the fault zone. Such a sensitivity study is important as the usually poor data base regarding specific hydro-mechanical fault properties as well as the upscaling process introduces uncertainties, whose impact on the modelling results is otherwise difficult to assess. Altogether, 87 scenarios with different elastic and plastic parameter combinations were studied. Numerical modelling results indicate that Young’s modulus and cohesion assigned to the fault zone have the strongest... [more]
Forecasting Electricity Prices Using Deep Neural Networks: A Robust Hyper-Parameter Selection Scheme
Grzegorz Marcjasz
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, deep learning, electricity price forecasting, hyper-parameter optimization, Machine Learning
Deep neural networks are rapidly gaining popularity. However, their application requires setting multiple hyper-parameters, and the performance relies strongly on this choice. We address this issue and propose a robust ex-ante hyper-parameter selection procedure for the day-ahead electricity price forecasting that, when used jointly with a tested forecast averaging scheme, yields high performance throughout three-year long out-of-sample test periods in two distinct markets. Being based on a grid search with models evaluated on long samples, the methodology mitigates the noise induced by local optimization. Forecast averaging across calibration window lengths and hyper-parameter sets allows the proposed methodology to outperform a parameter-rich least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)-estimated model and a deep neural network (DNN) with non-optimized hyper-parameters in terms of the mean absolute forecast error.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy district, geothermal energy, geothermal energy community, heating and cooling network, ORC, polygeneration system
This paper presents a thermodynamic, economic, and environmental analysis of a renewable polygeneration system connected to a district heating and cooling network. The system, fed by geothermal energy, provides thermal energy for heating and cooling, and domestic hot water for a residential district located in the metropolitan city of Naples (South of Italy). The produced electricity is partly used for auxiliaries of the thermal district and partly sold to the power grid. A calibration control strategy was implemented by considering manufacturer data matching the appropriate operating temperature levels in each component. The cooling and thermal demands of the connected users were calculated using suitable building dynamic simulation models. An energy network dedicated to heating and cooling loads was designed and simulated by considering the variable ground temperature throughout the year, as well as the accurate heat transfer coefficients and pressure losses of the network pipes. Subject: Materials
Keywords: autoclave leaching, Extraction, flow chart, monazite, radium, rare earth elements, separation, thorium, uranium
The optimal conditions for the nitric acid dissolution of precipitates of hydroxides and hydrated oxides of rare-earth elements, uranium, and thorium obtained after autoclave alkaline opening of samples of monazite concentrate have been determined. The distribution of radioactive impurities between the solid phase and the solution in the processes of alkaline opening, dephosphorization, and acid dissolution of the pulp was studied. Two options are proposed for the extraction of uranium and thorium in the presence of rare earth elements, followed by separation of the components using tributyl phosphate of various contents in the carbon diluent.

Keywords: electricity markets, energy storage systems, mathematical modelling, power system operation, power system planning
In the context of climate changes and the rapid growth of energy consumption, intermittent renewable energy sources (RES) are being predominantly installed in power systems. It has been largely elucidated that challenges that RES present to the system can be mitigated with energy storage systems (ESS). However, besides providing flexibility to intermittent RES, ESS have other sources of revenue, such as price arbitrage in the markets, balancing services, and reducing the cost of electricity procurement to end consumers. In order to operate the ESS in the most profitable way, it is often necessary to make optimal siting and sizing decisions, and to determine optimal ways for the ESS to participate in a variety of energy and ancillary service markets. As a result, many publications on ESS models with various goals and operating environments are available. This paper aims at presenting the results of these papers in a structured way. A standard ESS model is first outlined, and that is fol... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: district cooling, economic, environmental, Kalina, liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification, power
A Kalina cycle-based integration concept of municipal air-conditioning, electricity and gas is investigated thermodynamically, economically, and environmentally to reduce the carbon intensity of these supplies, with attention to hot climatic conditions. The proposed poly-generation system is driven by low-grade renewable or surplus heat, and utilizes waste exergy from liquefied natural gas vaporization for refrigeration and power augmentation. At nominal conditions (130 °C driving heat), approximately 561 and 151 kJ of refrigeration and useful power per kg of liquefied natural gas regasified are generated by the proposed system, respectively, at effective first-law and exergetic efficiencies of 33% and 35%, respectively. The Kalina sub-system condenser cryogenic heat rejection condition is found to triple the system useful electrical output compared with high ambient temperature condenser heat sinking conditions. Per million ton per annum of liquefied natural gas vaporization capacity,... [more]
Modelling of Distributed Resource Aggregation for the Provision of Ancillary Services

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aggregation, ancillary services, distributed energy resources, Optimization, power system operation
Nowadays, ancillary services (ASs) are usually provided by large power generating units located in transmission networks, while smaller assets connected to distribution systems remain passive. It is expected that active distribution systems will start to play an important role due to numerous issues related to power system operation caused mainly by developing renewable generation and restrictions imposed on conventional power generating units by climate policies. The future development of the power system management will also lead to the establishment of new market agents such as distributed resource aggregators (DRAs). The article presents the concept of the DRA as part of an active distribution system enabling small resources to participate in wholesale markets, provide ASs and indicates the functions of the DRA coordinator in the modern power system. The proposed method of the DRA structure modelling with the use of the mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) is aimed at evaluating... [more]
Energy Inputs in Motor-Manual Release Cutting of Broadleaved Forests: Results of Twelve Options

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: balance, Energy, forestry, input, motor-manual, operations, release cutting
Lignocellulosic biomass is used in various industries and its procurement involves a set of operations that are mainly done using equipment powered by internal combustion engines. The sustainability of forest operations may be characterized by balancing their energy inputs with those typically embodied in their outputted products. Forest tending operations are problematic because most of them cannot output marketable products while the data on their energy inputs are important for the forest management. Six of the most commonly used brushcutters equipped successively with discs and knives were tested to provide part of the data needed to run an energy analysis and to be able to characterize the energy inputs in release cutting operations by implementing the Gross Energy Requirements method. Fuel burning was found to have the greatest contribution (83−92%) in the total energy inputs (0.8−1.2 GJ/ha) of the studied operations and it was highly dependent on the efficiency of operations. Keywords: coal phase-out, decarbonisation, electricity price, generation adequacy, Italy, optimization model and simulation, price analysis
Although decarbonisation is one of the most important macro-trends of this century, electricity generation from coal power plants is still broadly common. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of a premature coal power plants phase-out on the Italian day-ahead electricity market. For this purpose, two electricity price forecasts, related to different scenarios between 2019 and 2030, and two different hypotheses for the creation of electricity spot price, were compared. The results from the different scenarios show that coal power plants phase-out determines a small variation in electricity price when bid-up is not considered; instead, when operators’ bid-up is included in the study, the price variation becomes relevant.

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: air-conditioning, air-management metrics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), data center, design of experiments (DOE), energy conservation, prediction accuracy
In data centers, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) consumes 30−40% of total energy consumption. Of that portion, 26% is attributed to fan power, the ventilation efficiency of which should thus be improved. As an alternative method for experimentations, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used. In this study, “parameter tuning”—which aims to improve the prediction accuracy of CFD simulation—is implemented by using the method known as “design of experiments”. Moreover, it is attempted to improve the thermal environment by using a CFD model after parameter tuning. As a result of the parameter tuning, the difference between the result of experimental-measurement results and simulation results for average inlet temperature of information-technology equipment (ITE) installed in the ventilation room of a test data center was within 0.2 °C at maximum. After tuning, the CFD model was used to verify the effect of advanced insulation such as raised-floor fixed panels and show th... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: correction link, DC bus voltage, frequency domain analysis, grid-side converter, linear active disturbance rejection control, reduced-order linear expansion state observer
In the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), the DC bus voltage fluctuates up and down under the influence of the load and power grid, which greatly affects the safe and reliable work of PMSG. In order to suppress the wide range fluctuation of DC bus voltage under disturbance and enhance its anti-disturbance performance, an optimized DC bus voltage control strategy is proposed by using the improved linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) in the voltage outer loop. By considering factors, such as load disturbance and grid voltage mutation as the total disturbance of the system, the improved reduced-order linear expansion state observer (RLSEO) is used to estimate and compensate the total disturbance, which greatly improves the stability of DC bus voltage. Firstly, the mathematical model of grid-side converter is established. On this basis, the LADRC control based on RLESO is designed, which reduces the phase lag of the linear extended state observer (LESO) and enhan... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boxplot, energy storage systems, Fourier transform, Model Predictive Control, Solar Photovoltaic, spectral analysis, thermostatically controlled loads
In this paper, we present a flexibility estimation mechanism for buildings’ thermostatically controlled loads (TCLs) to enable the distribution level consumption of the majority of solar photovoltaic (PV) generation by local building TCLs. The local consumption of PV generation provides several advantages to the grid operation as well as the consumers, such as reducing the stress on the distribution network, minimizing voltage fluctuations and two-way power flows in the distribution network, and reducing the required battery storage capacity for PV integration. This would result in increasing the solar PV generation penetration levels. The aims of this study are twofold. First, spectral (frequency) analyses of solar PV power generation together with the power consumption of multiple building TCLs (such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, water heaters, and refrigerators) are performed. These analyses define the bandwidth over which these TCLs can operate and a... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: ASHP system, CPCM, defrosting, indoor thermal comfort, refrigerant direct-condensation radiant floor heating
Traditional defrosting methods applied to solve frosting problems of air-source heat pumps operating in cold periods may reduce heat capacity of the system and decrease indoor thermal comfort. In order to improve the performance of air-source heat pump (ASHP) and maintain indoor temperature in defrosting conditions, an air-source heat pump combined with a refrigerant direct-condensation radiant floor heating system with phase change material is proposed and evaluated in this study. Two radiant floor heating terminals with and without composite phase change material modules were compared through experiments. A composite phase change material based on dodecanoic acid-tetradecanol-hexadecanol mixture and expanded graphite was investigated for this application. Experimental results indicate that both heat fluxes of two comparing terminals are higher than 70 W/m2 in heating condition. At the same time, the floor surface temperature, indoor air temperature, and heating capacity of the termin... [more]

Keywords: flow behavior, fluorochemical, gas-wetting alteration, liquid-blocking effect, morphology
Gas-wetting alteration is a versatile and effective approach for alleviating liquid-blockage that occurs when the wellbore pressure of a gas-condensate reservoir drops below the dew point. Fluorochemicals are of growing interest in gas-wetting alteration because of their high density of fluorine groups and thermal stability, which can change the reservoir wettability into more favorable conditions for liquids. This review aims to integrate the overlapping research between the current knowledge in organic chemistry and enhanced oil and gas recovery. The difference between wettability alteration and gas-wetting alteration is illustrated, and the methods used to evaluate gas-wetting are summarized. Recent advances in the applications of fluorochemicals for gas-wetting alteration are highlighted. The mechanisms of self-assembling adsorption layers formed by fluorochemicals with different surface morphologies are also reviewed. The factors that affect the gas-wetting performance of fluoroch... Keywords: battery storage, intraday market, peak-shaving, photovoltaic power plant, power control, smart grid
The number of large energy storage units installed in the power system has increased over the last few years. This fact remains closely linked to the increase in the share of renewable energy in electricity generation. This is necessary to maintain the stability of the grid, which is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain due to the growing number of renewable energy sources (RES). Energy production from these sources is difficult to estimate, and possible unplanned shortages and surpluses in production are the cause of voltage and frequency fluctuations, which is an undesirable state. Consequently, the use of energy storage not only contributes to the regulation of grid operation but can also, under appropriate conditions, constitute an additional load if too much energy is generated by RES, or the source when the generation from RES is insufficient. The main contributions of this paper are as follows: A presentation of practical results achieved by implementing two optimal contr... [more]

Keywords: equivalent circuit, Fourier transform, internal resistance, ultracapacitor
The specific power storage capabilities of double-layer ultracapacitors are receiving significant attention from engineers and scientific researchers. Nevertheless, their dynamic behavior should be studied to improve the performance and for efficient applications in electrical devices. This article presents an infinite resistor−capacitor (r−C) chain-based mathematical model for the analysis of double layer ultracapacitors. The internal resistance and capacitance were measured for repetitive charging and discharging cycles. The magnitudes of internal resistance and capacitance showed approximately ±10% changes for charge-discharge processes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy investigations revealed that the impedance of a double-layer ultracapacitor does not change significantly in the temperature range of (−30 °C to +30 °C) and voltage range of (0.3376−2.736 V). The analysis of impedance data using the proposed mathematical model showed good agreement between the experimental and... [more]

Keywords: carbonate reservoir, enhanced oil recovery, forward combustion, high-pressure combustion tube, reverse combustion
The work presented herein is devoted to a unique set of forward and reverse combustion tube (CT) experiments to access the suitability and potential of the in situ combustion (ISC) method for the light oil carbonate reservoir. One forward and one reverse combustion tube tests were carried out using the high-pressure combustion tube (HPCT) experimental setup. However, during reverse combustion, the front moved in the opposite direction to the airflow. The results obtained from experiments such as fuel/air requirements, H/C ratio, and recovery efficiency are crucial for further validation of the numerical model. A quantitative assessment of the potential for the combustion was carried out. The oil recovery of forward combustion was as high as 91.4% of the initial oil in place, while that for the reverse combustion test demonstrated a 43% recovery. In the given conditions, forward combustion demonstrated significantly higher efficiency. However, the stabilized combustion front propagation... [more]
