April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fault early warning, feature reduction, feedwater heater, frequent pattern model, stacked denoising sparse autoencoder
Power grid operation faces severe challenges with the increasing integration of intermittent renewable energies. Hence the steam turbine, which mainly undertakes the task of frequency regulation and peak shaving, always operates under off-design conditions to meet the accommodation demand. This would affect the operation economy and exacerbate the ullage of equipment. The feedwater heater (FWH) plays an important role in unit, whose timely fault early warning is significant in improving the operational reliability of unit. Therefore, this paper proposes a stacked denoising sparse autoencoder (SDSAE) based fault early warning method for FWH. Firstly, the concept of a frequent pattern model is proposed as an indicator of FWH performance evaluation. Then, an SDSAE- back-propagation (BP) based method is introduced to achieve self-adaptive feature reduction and depict nonlinear properties of frequent pattern modeling. By experimenting with actual data, the feasibility and validity of the pr... [more]
Suppression of Supply Current Harmonics of 18-Pulse Diode Rectifier by Series Active Power Filter with LC Coupling
Wojciech Sleszynski, Artur Cichowski, Piotr Mysiak
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coupled reactors, multipulse converters, power conditioning, series active power filters
The reported research aims at improving the quality of three-phase rectifier supply currents. An effective method consists of adding properly formed booster voltages to the fundamental supply voltages using a series active filter. In the proposed solution, the booster voltages are generated by three single-phase systems consisting of inverters, LC filters, and single-phase transformers. The application of LC couplings ensures low emission of disturbances, but may provoke compensator stability problems. The article presents the current control system for a series active filter designed to suppress the dominant harmonics in the supply currents of an 18-pulse rectifier, without interference into fundamental current components. A proportional control is proposed in combination with integral terms implemented in the orthogonal coordinate systems, which synchronically rotate with frequencies equal to those of the harmonic components to be eliminated. The use of complex gains in integral term... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: hydrogen peroxide, mild-temperature, pilot-scale, thermal pre-treatment, thermochemical pre-treatment, waste activated sludge
Sludge pre-treatments are emerging as part of the disposal process of solid by-products of wastewater purification. One of their benefits is the increase in methane production rate and/or yield, along with higher loading capacities of existing digesters. In this study, we report the performance of a pilot-scale compartmentalized digester (volume of 18.6 m3) that utilized a mild thermal pre-treatment at 70 °C coupled with hydrogen peroxide dosing. Compared with a reference conventional anaerobic digester, this technique allowed an increased organic loading rate from 1.4 to 4.2 kg volatile solids (VS)/(m3d) and an increment in the solids degradation from 40 to 44%. To some extent, these improvements were promoted by the solubilization of the tightly-bound fraction of the extracellular polymeric substances to looser and more accessible fractions without the formation of refractory compounds. In sum, our results suggest that this pre-treatment method could increase the treatment capacity o... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: biogas plant, energetic optimization, manure, substrates, wheat straw
Although cow manure is a valuable natural fertilizer, it is also a source of extreme greenhouse gas emissions, mainly methane. For this reason, this study aims to determine the impact of investments in a biogas plant on the energy and economic aspects of the operation of a dairy farm. A farm with a breeding size of 600 livestock units (LSU) was adopted for the analysis. In order to reach the paper’s aim, the analysis of two different scenarios of dairy farm functioning (conventional−only milk production, and modern−with biogas plant exploitation) was conducted. The analysis showed that the investment in biogas plant operations at a dairy farm and in using cow manure as one of the main substrates is a more profitable scenario compared to traditional dairy farming. Taking into account the actual Polish subsidies for electricity produced by small biogas plants, the scenario with a functioning biogas plant with a capacity of 500 kW brings €332,000/a more profit compared to the conventional... Surface Temperature Distribution Characteristics of Marangoni Condensation for Ethanol−Water Mixture Vapor Based on Thermal Infrared Images
Guilong Zhang, Ziqiang Ma, Heng Li, Jinshi Wang
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condensate surface, droplet, Marangoni condensation, temperature distribution, thermal infrared images
Marangoni condensation is formed due to the surface tension gradient caused by the local temperature or concentration gradient on the condensate surface; thus, the investigation of the surface temperature distribution characteristics is crucial to reveal the condensation mechanism and heat transfer characteristics. Few studies have been conducted on the temperature distribution of the condensate surface. In this study, thermal infrared images were used to measure the temperature distributions of the condensate surface during Marangoni condensation for ethanol−water mixture vapor. The results showed that the surface temperature distribution of the single droplet was uneven, and a large temperature gradient, approximately 15.6 °C/mm, existed at the edge of the condensate droplets. The maximum temperature difference on the droplet surface reached up to 8 °C. During the condensation process, the average surface temperature of a single droplet firstly increased rapidly and then slowly until... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: biogas, co-digestion, energy efficiency and security, sewage sludge, sustainable energy policy
The improvement of energy efficiency ensuring high nutrients removal is a great concern for many wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The energy balance of a WWTP can be improved through the application of highly efficient digestion or its intensification, e.g., through the introduction of the co-substrates with relatively high energy potential to the sewage sludge (SS). In the present study, the overview of the energetic aspect of the Polish WWTPs was presented. The evaluation of energy consumption at individual stages of wastewater treatment along with the possibilities of its increasing was performed. Additionally, the influence of co-digestion process implementation on the energy efficiency of a selected WWTP in Poland was investigated. The evaluation was carried out for a WWTP located in Iława. Both energetic and treatment efficiency were analyzed. The energy balance evaluation of this WWTP was also performed. The obtained results indicated that the WWTP in Iława produced on avera... [more]

Keywords: gas to liquid momentum flux ratio, gas-centered swirl coaxial injectors, injector design, performance efficiency, staged-combustion-cycle rocket engines
The effects of the momentum-flux ratio of propellant upon the combustion efficiency of a gas-centered-swirl-coaxial (GCSC) injector used in the combustion chamber of a full-scale 9-tonf staged-combustion-cycle engine were studied experimentally. In the combustion experiment, liquid oxygen was used as an oxidizer, and kerosene was used as fuel. The liquid oxygen and kerosene burned in the preburner drive the turbine of the turbopump under the oxidizer-rich hot-gas condition before flowing into the GCSC injector of the combustion chamber. The oxidizer-rich hot gas is mixed with liquid kerosene passed through combustion chamber’s cooling channel at the injector outlet. This mixture has a dimensionless momentum-flux ratio that depends upon the dispensing speed of the two fluids. Combustion tests were performed under varying mixture ratios and combustion pressures for different injector shapes and numbers of injectors, and the characteristic velocities and performance efficiencies of the co... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: average vehicle occupancy, car mobility, intelligent mobility management, urban traffic
Until three or four decades ago, humanity was no longer constrained by the depletion of certain natural resources (especially energy) and the intensified degradation of the natural environment. The consequences of these major crises—such as the economic, financial, and social upheaval of the world, dramatic climate change, and the entry of politics into a Brownian sarabande—necessitate the transition of civilization to another viable formula. Adequate, timely, and sustainable solutions are being sought, from the subsistence ones to those of economic efficiency. Thus, the mobility revolution is credited as one of the most important levers of change. Starting from the reality that most cars in traffic are not occupied at their maximum capacity, some ideas have already been advanced and even put into practice—“inspired”—which would improve the efficiency in this regard. For example, the reduction in the number of seats in cars and, correspondingly, the considerable reduction in the dimens... [more]
A Distribution System State Estimator Based on an Extended Kalman Filter Enhanced with a Prior Evaluation of Power Injections at Unmonitored Buses
David Macii, Daniele Fontanelli, Grazia Barchi
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: distribution system state estimation, estimation uncertainty, Phasor Measurement Units (PMU), power system measurement, smart grid measurements
In the context of smart grids, Distribution Systems State Estimation (DSSE) is notoriously problematic because of the scarcity of available measurement points and the lack of real-time information on loads. The scarcity of measurement data influences on the effectiveness and applicability of dynamic estimators like the Kalman filters. However, if an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) resulting from the linearization of the power flow equations is complemented by an ancillary prior least-squares estimation of the weekly active and reactive power injection variations at all buses, significant performance improvements can be achieved. Extensive simulation results obtained assuming to deploy an increasing number of next-generation smart meters and Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) show that not only the proposed approach is generally more accurate and precise than the classic Weighted Least Squares (WLS) estimator (chosen as a benchmark algorithm), but it is also less sensitive to both the number... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: conditional value at risk, improved multi-layer artificial bee colony algorithm, risk-based hybrid demand response, two-stage optimization, uncertainties
Owing to the increasing utilization of renewable energy resources, distributed energy resources (DERs) become inevitably uncertain, and microgrid operators have difficulty in operating the power systems because of this uncertainty. In this study, we propose a two-stage optimization approach with a hybrid demand response program (DRP) considering a risk index for microgrids (MGs) under uncertainty. The risk-based hybrid DRP is presented to reduce both operational costs and uncertainty effect using demand response elasticity. The problem is formulated as a two-stage optimization that considers not only the expected operation costs but also risk expense of uncertainty. To address the optimization problem, an improved multi-layer artificial bee colony (IML-ABC) is incorporated into the MG operation. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through a numerical analysis based on a typical low-voltage grid-connected MG. As a result, the proposed approach can reduce the opera... Achieving a satisfactory level for indoor environments of historical buildings is an ongoing problem that needs to be solved due to a large demand for deep retrofits in the whole of Europe. The implementation of the indoor environmental quality index (IEQ) to predict an occupant’s satisfaction in thermo-modernized historical buildings is a new concept which is a response to existing needs. In this article, a relevant study is provided with the intention to evaluate the indoor environmental performance of retrofitting effects in historical buildings dating back to the years 1873−1878. Considering the historical character of the buildings, some of the cellar spaces were fitted out with an innovative internal insulation system of mineral sheets based on calcium silicate to prevent water vapor condensation and effectively limit mold growth. The IEQ methodology was applied for retrofitted and non-retrofitted spaces as a comparison. Four essential components of indoor quality are investigate... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Adsorption, mercury injection capillary pressure, neutron scattering, sample size, shale
The sample size or particle size of shale plays a significant role in the characterization of pores by various techniques. To systematically investigate the influence of particle size on pore characteristics and the optimum sample size for different methods, we conducted complementary tests on two overmature marine shale samples with different sample sizes. The tests included small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), gas (N2, CO2, and H2O) adsorption, mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP), and field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) imaging. The results indicate that artificial pores and fractures may occur on the surface or interior of the particles during the pulverization process, and some isolated pores may be exposed to the particle surface or connected by new fractures, thus improving the pore connectivity of the shale. By comparing the results of different approaches, we established a hypothetical model to analyze how the crushing process affects the pore structu... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condensation resistance, heat transfer analysis, heat transmittance, hybrid timber windows, hygrothermal performance, thermal conductivity, timber windows, wood anatomy, wood physics
When assessing the hygrothermal performance of timber windows, it is important to apply the unique thermal conductivity of wood by each wood species as well as an anatomical direction within the same material as they affect the performance and long-term durability of products. A series of heat transfer analyses of window frames using THERM and WINDOW along with measurements on the thermal conductivity of five hardwoods using laser flash apparatus (LFA) was performed to compare and evaluate heat transmittance (U-value) and condensation resistance (CR) of three types of timber and hybrid timber windows. For each window type, 6.1 to 10.3% of the maximum difference in the heat transmittance among cases was calculated. Besides, a linear correlation was found between the U-value and the CR for most cases; thus, the selection of wood species and anatomical direction would improve the hygrothermal performance of timber windows overall. The results also indicated that there were some cases wher... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: curtailed wind power, energy system, gas network, Hydrogen, renewable storage
Renewable electricity can be converted into hydrogen via electrolysis also known as power-to-H2 (P2H), which, when injected in the gas network pipelines provides a potential solution for the storage and transport of this green energy. Because of the variable renewable electricity production, the electricity end-user’s demand for “power when required”, distribution, and transmission power grid constrains the availability of renewable energy for P2H can be difficult to predict. The evaluation of any potential P2H investment while taking into account this consideration, should also examine the effects of incorporating the produced green hydrogen in the gas network. Parameters, including pipeline pressure drop, flowrate, velocity, and, most importantly, composition and calorific content, are crucial for gas network management. A simplified representation of the Irish gas transmission network is created and used as a case study to investigate the impact on gas network operation, of hydrogen... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: artificial neural network, closed-loop control, diesel combustion, diesel engine, virtual emission prediction
With the increase of information processing speed, more and more engine optimization work can be processed automatically. The quick-response closed-loop control method is becoming an urgent demand for the combustion control of modern internal combustion engines. In this paper, artificial neural network (ANN) and polynomial functions are used to predict the emission and engine performance based on seven parameters extracted from the in-cylinder pressure trace information of over 3000 cases. Based on the prediction model, the optimal combustion parameters are found with two different intelligent algorithms, including genetical algorithm and fish swarm algorithm. The results show that combination of quadratic function with genetical algorithm is able to obtain the appropriate combustion control parameters. Both engine emissions and thermal efficiency can be virtually predicted in a much faster way, such that enables a promising way to achieve fast and reliable closed-loop combustion contr... [more]

Finding new sustainable energy sources or improving the efficiencies of the existing ones represents a very important research and development direction. The hybridization approach is one solution for increasing the efficiency of the existing energy sources. In the case of photovoltaic technology, the hybridization of the photovoltaic panels (PV) with thermoelectric generators (TEGs) has become a more interesting solution for the research community in the last decade. Thus, a comprehensive review of the characterization methods and instruments used in PV-TEG hybrid system study represents the objective of this work. PV and TEG equivalent circuits are presented. The instruments and software applications used for the measurements and simulations are presented and analyzed. The analysis of the literature reveals that there are many papers that offer partial or no information about the instruments used or about the measurement quality (accuracies, uncertainties, etc.). April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: horizontal section mining, rock burst, steeply inclined extra-thick coal seam, UDEC
Rock bursts have recently become a serious problem in the horizontal section mining of steeply inclined extra-thick coal seams (SIETCSs). However, few studies have been carried out to investigate their mechanisms and prevention. In this study, numerical simulation and field measurements were carried out to investigate the mechanism of rock bursts in the horizontal section mining of an SIETCS. A Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC) Trigon model was built, based on the Yaojie No.3 Coal Mine, and calibrated through laboratory tests and RQD methods. The results demonstrate that the coal in the elastic zone around the roof is in a high static stress state, due to the asymmetric clamping and squeezing of the roof and floor. Strong dynamic loads are formed by breakage of the roof and the failure of multiple hinged beam structures during the evolution process of the overlying strata. Rock bursts occur on the roof side when the superimposition of the static stress σs and stress increment σd i... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC motor, sensorless, super-twisting, velocity control
A DC motor velocity control in feedback systems usually requires a velocity sensor, which increases the controller cost. Additionally, the velocity sensor used in industrial applications presents several disadvantages such as maintenance requirements and signal conditioning. In this work, we propose a robust velocity control scheme applied to a DC motor based on estimation strategies using a sliding-mode observer. This means that measurements with mechanical sensors are not required in the controller design. The proposed observer estimates the rotational velocity and load torque of the motor. The controller design applies the exact-linearization technique combined with the super-twisting algorithm to achieve robust performance in the closed-loop system. The controller validation was carried out by experimental tests using a workbench, which is composed of a control and data acquisition Digital Signal Proccessor board, a DC-DC electronic converter, an interface board for signals conditi... Potential Liquid-Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) Systems: A Review on Recent Progress
Purna Chandra Rao, Minyoung Yoon
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: catalyst, dehydrogenation, hydrogen storage, hydrogenation, liquid-organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC)
The depletion of fossil fuels and rising global warming challenges encourage to find safe and viable energy storage and delivery technologies. Hydrogen is a clean, efficient energy carrier in various mobile fuel-cell applications and owned no adverse effects on the environment and human health. However, hydrogen storage is considered a bottleneck problem for the progress of the hydrogen economy. Liquid-organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are organic substances in liquid or semi-solid states that store hydrogen by catalytic hydrogenation and dehydrogenation processes over multiple cycles and may support a future hydrogen economy. Remarkably, hydrogen storage in LOHC systems has attracted dramatically more attention than conventional storage systems, such as high-pressure compression, liquefaction, and absorption/adsorption techniques. Potential LOHC media must provide fully reversible hydrogen storage via catalytic processes, thermal stability, low melting points, favorable hydrogenation... [more]

Keywords: COVID-19, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), remote sensing, Sentinel-5P, traffic, vehicle mile traveled (VMT)
The COVID-19 outbreak and ensuing social distancing behaviors resulted in substantial reduction on traffic, making this a unique experiment on observing the air quality. Such an experiment is also supplemental to the smart city concept as it can help to identify whether there is a delay on air quality improvement during or after a sharp decline on traffic and to determine what, if any, factors are contributing to that time lag. As such, this study investigates the immediate impacts of COVID-19 causing abrupt declines on traffic and NO2 concentration in all Florida Counties through March 2020. Daily tropospheric NO2 concentrations were extracted from the Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite and vehicle mile traveled (VMT) estimates were acquired from cell phone mobility records. It is observed that overall impacts of the COVID-19 response in Florida have started in the first half of the March 2020, two weeks earlier than the official stay-at-home orders, and resulted in 54.07% and 59.68% decr... Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy renovation, homeowners’ perception, implementation, indoor environmental quality, influential factors
Inclusion of energy efficiency measures (EEMs) in the renovation of the single-family housing stock can unlock the potential for much-needed energy efficiency to tackle climate change. Energy renovation (ER) in single-family houses is often promoted as an aggregate process, and EEMs are treated homogenously without sufficient attention to their differences. This study applies a comparative analysis on common EEMs using chi-square test to investigate the influence of factors already found affecting the implementation of ER. This paper addresses the “personal” and “house-related” factors influencing the adoption of EEMs regardless of motives or barriers leading the adopters’ decisions. This strategy is useful to highlight the contexts leading to an increase in the adoption rate of different EEMs. The analysis is based on a questionnaire survey mailed in spring 2017 to 1550 single-family homeowners in the northern region of Sweden. Approximately 60% of respondents showed interest in adopt... [more]

In this article the solution based on hydrogen generation to increase the flexibility of energy storage systems is proposed. Operating characteristics of a hydrogen generator with integrated electrical energy storage and a photovoltaic installation were determined. The key role of the electricity storage in the proposed system was to maintain the highest operating efficiency related to the nominal parameters of the hydrogen generator. The hydrogen generators achieved the highest energy efficiency for the nominal operating point at the highest power output. Lead-acid batteries were used to ensure the optimal operating conditions for the hydrogen generator supplied with renewable energy throughout the day. The proposed system reduces significantly the hydrogen generator nominal power and devices in system operate in such a way to improve their efficiency and durability. The relations between individual components and their constraints were determined. The proposed solution is fully in-li... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: driving speed profiles, energy-saving, metro lines, railway sector, Simulation
We propose a model for optimising driving speed profiles on metro lines to reduce traction energy consumption. The model optimises the cruising speed to be maintained on each section between two stations; the functions that link the cruising speed to the travel time on the section and the corresponding energy consumption are built using microscopic railway simulation software. In addition to formulating an optimisation model and its resolution through a gradient algorithm, the problem is also solved by using a simulation model and the corresponding optimisation module, with which stochastic factors may be included in the problem. The results are promising and show that traction energy savings of over 25% compared to non-optimised operations may be achieved.

Keywords: auxiliary services, battery, microgrids, photovoltaic generation, substations
Auxiliary services are vital for the operation of a substation. If a contingency affects the distribution feeder that provides energy for the auxiliary services, it could lead to the unavailability of the substation’s service. Therefore, backup systems such as diesel generators are used. Another alternative is the adoption of a microgrid with batteries and photovoltaic generation to supply substation auxiliary services during a contingency. Nevertheless, high battery costs and the intermittence of photovoltaic generation requires a careful analysis so the microgrid capacity is defined in a compromise between the investment and the unavailability reduction of auxiliary services. This paper proposes a method for the capacity sizing of a microgrid with batteries, photovoltaic generation, and bidirectional inverters to supply auxiliary services in substations under a contingency. A set of alternatives is assessed through exhaustive search and Monte Carlo simulations to cater for uncertaint... [more]
