The Liberalization of the Internal Energy Market in the European Union: Evidence of Its Influence on Reducing Environmental Pollution
Pablo Ponce, Cristiana Oliveira, Viviana Álvarez, María de la Cruz del Río-Rama
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 emissions, electricity, liberalization, Natural Gas, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
From an empirical point of view, the liberalization of the internal energy market reduces carbon dioxide emissions, promoting a wider range of renewable energy sources. The aim of this paper is to examine the effect of the liberalization of the internal energy market on CO2 emissions, which was implemented in the European Union in 2011. The research data cover 27 countries of the European Union during the period 2004−2017 and was processed by estimating a two-way effects econometric model. The results suggest that the liberalization of the internal energy market is negatively related to CO2 emissions; the policy was effective in reducing CO2 emissions and, therefore, slowing down climate change. This result is significant at the level of the European Union, and in high-income countries since the year the policy was implemented, being different in the upper-middle-income countries, which begins to be effective after two years, which is due to the economic characteristics of the countrie... Ahmad Alzahrani, Pourya Shamsi, Mehdi Ferdowsi
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flyback, high voltage gain, MPPT, O, P&amp, PV, step-up, three-level
This paper proposes a family of step-up three-level DC-DC converter topologies suitable for photovoltaic panel integration applications. The proposed family is suitable to convert the 10−30 V from photovoltaic panels to a 150 V direct current distribution bus. The proposed family enhances the three-level topology in terms of the voltage gain, power density, and filtering requirements at the input level. The filtration is reduced by interleaving. The three-level boost converter’s voltage gain is enhanced by utilizing several options such as switched capacitor cells, switched inductor cells, and flyback transformers or coupled inductors. The enhancement techniques are illustrated by providing the circuit diagram and a comparison of the voltage gain and the number of required components. An example converter of a hybrid three-level boost converter with a flyback transformer is presented to convert 20 V from a photovoltaic panel to a 400 V. The theory of operation and steady-state analysis... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep mine, dynamic load, energy evolution, fracture behavior, strain energy density
The exploitation of deep resources is necessary for human development. At the same time, high-stress environments that are deep underground bring about great challenges vis-à-vis resource exploitation. A large deep opening is sensitive to high ground stress, and is easily influenced by external interference, which can lead to geologically hazardous occurrences. To investigate the evolution of fracturing and energy in large, deep stopes subjected to dynamic loads, we established a numerical model of a stope in the Gaofeng mine. Using ANSYS/LS-DYNA software, we implemented an implicit solution to initial static stress and an explicit solution for dynamic analysis. Based on our numerical results, we obtained the fracture behavior and energy evolution under coupled static and dynamic loads. To determine the response of ground pressure to mining activity, a 24-channel microseismic monitoring system was designed for the Gaofeng mine based on the numerical analysis.

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: air quality, carbon emissions, diesel particulate matter, exhaust emissions, laser-induced plasma spectroscopy, LIBS, LIPS, metallic nanoparticles, optical emission spectroscopy, particulate matter, particulates, pollutant emissions, soot, trace elements, trace emission, trace metals, ultrafine particles, vehicle emissions
This research qualitatively and quantitatively characterises the minor chemical elements in diesel particulate matter (DPM). DPM was extracted from in-use diesel engine passenger vehicles of diverse types and models from major brand car producers in Europe. We analysed particulate matter extracted from the exhaust manifold part from passenger vehicles that are used in daily life environment. To qualitatively and quantitatively characterise the DPM, we employed the high-resolution Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy analytical technique (LIBS). Qualitative spectrochemical LIBS analyses confirmed the presence of minor chemical elements—silicon, nickel, titan, potassium, strontium, and molybdenum in DPM. For quantification of the LIBS signal, the calibration functions were constructed from internal calibration standards. Different concentrations of detected minor elements Si, Ni, Ti, K, Sr, and Mo were measured with respect to the type of complex particulate matter.

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: carboniferous, hong-che fault zone, junggar basin, main controlling factors of hydrocarbon accumulation, volcanic reservoir
The Hong-Che Fault Zone is one of the important oil and gas enrichment zones in the Junggar Basin, especially in the Carboniferous. In recent five years, it has been proven that the Carboniferous volcanic rock has 140 million tons of oil reserves, and has built the Carboniferous volcanic reservoir with a capacity of million tons. Practice has proven that the volcanic rocks in this area have great potential for oil and gas exploration and development. To date, Carboniferous volcanic reservoirs have been discovered in well areas such as Che 32, Che 47, Che 91, Chefeng 3, Che 210, and Che 471. The study of drilling, logging, and seismic data shows that the Carboniferous volcanic reservoirs in the Hong-Che Fault Zone are mainly distributed in the hanging wall of the fault zone, and oil and gas have mainly accumulated in the high part of the structure. The reservoirs are controlled by faults and lithofacies in the plane and are vertically distributed within 400 m from the top of the Carboni... [more]
Research on the Method of Methane Emission Prediction Using Improved Grey Radial Basis Function Neural Network Model

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: grey theory, improved grey RBF neural network model, methane emission prediction, RBF neural network model
Effectively avoiding methane accidents is vital to the security of manufacturing minerals. Coal mine methane accidents are often caused by a methane concentration overrun, and accurately predicting methane emission quantity in a coal mine is key to solving this problem. To maintain the concentration of methane in a secure range, grey theory and neural network model are increasingly used to critically forecasting methane emission quantity in coal mines. A limitation of the grey neural network model is that researchers have merely combined the conventional neural network and grey theory. To enhance the accuracy of prediction, a modified grey GM (1,1) and radial basis function (RBF) neural network model is proposed, which combines the amended grey GM (1,1) model and RBF neural network model. In this article, the proposed model is put into a simulation experiment, which is built based on Matlab software (MathWorks.Inc, Natick, Masezius, U.S). Ultimately, the conclusion of the simulation ex... [more]

Keywords: electrical energy efficiency, fuel-saving, Optimization, proton-exchange membrane fuel cell, safe and healthy strategy
In this paper, the optimal and safe operation of a hybrid power system based on a fuel cell system and renewable energy sources is analyzed. The needed DC power resulting from the power flow balance on the DC bus is ensured by the FC system via the air regulator or the fuel regulator controlled by the power-tracking control reference or both regulators using a switched mode of the above-mentioned reference. The optimal operation of a fuel cell system is ensured by a search for the maximum of multicriteria-based optimization functions focused on fuel economy under perturbation, such as variable renewable energy and dynamic load on the DC bus. Two search controllers based on the global extremum seeking scheme are involved in this search via the remaining fueling regulator and the boost DC−DC converter. Thus, the fuel economy strategies based on the control of the air regulator and the fuel regulator, respectively, on the control of both fueling regulators are analyzed in this study. The... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: damping coefficient, design, EHSA, energy harvesting, methodology, shock absorber
In recent years, there has been a lot of work related to Energy Harvesting Shock Absorbers (EHSA). These devices harvest energy from the movement of the vehicle’s shock absorbers caused by road roughness, braking, acceleration and turning. There are different technologies that can be used in these systems, but it is not clear which would be the best option if you want to replace a conventional shock absorber with an EHSA. This article presents a methodology to compare the performance of different EHSA technologies that can replace a shock absorber with a given damping coefficient. The methodology allows to include different analysis options, including different types of driving cycles, computer vehicle models, input signals and road types. The article tests the methodology in selecting the optimal EHSA technology for a particular shock absorber and vehicle, optimizing at the same time energy recovery. In addition, a study of parameters in each type of technology is included to analyze... [more]
Real-Time Multiparameter Identification of a Salient-Pole PMSM Based on Two Steady States
Minglei Zhou, Long Jiang, Chenchen Wang
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: error analysis, multiparameter identification, salient-pole PMSM, steady state
Real-time multiparameter identification has been widely investigated in relation to high-performance control and fault diagnosis of salient-pole permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs). However, it is rank-deficient for simultaneously estimating flux, resistance, and dq-axis inductances based on one steady state under maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control, which will cause the ill-convergence problem in the results. This paper proposes a new method to solve the rank deficiency problem in the multiparameter identification of salient-pole PMSMs in systems where the motor working conditions do not change frequently. For this type of system, a second steady state is constructed in order to meet the full-rank conditions for multiparameter identification and minimize the torque ripple. Furthermore, in order to reduce the influence of inductance variations, a better shift direction from the first steady state to the second is ensured based on the analysis of the theoretical error. Conjugated Numerical Approach for Modelling DBHE in High Geothermal Gradient Environments
Theo Renaud, Patrick G. Verdin, Gioia Falcone
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deep wellbore heat exchanger, geothermal energy CFD, Modelling
Geothermal is a renewable energy source that can be untapped through various subsurface technologies. Closed geothermal well solutions, such as deep geothermal heat exchangers (DBHEs), consist of circulating a working fluid to recover the available heat, with less dependency on the local geological settings than conventional geothermal systems. This paper emphasizes a double numerical method to strengthen the assessment of DBHE performances. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) commercial software and the 1D coupled wellbore-reservoir geothermal simulator T2Well have been used to investigate the heat transfer and fluid flow in a vertical DBHE in high geothermal gradient environments. The use of constant water properties to investigate the energy produced from DBHEs can lead to underestimating the overall heat transfer at high temperature and low mass flow rate. 2D axisymmetric CFD modelling improves the understanding of the return flow at the bottom of the DBHE, readjusting and better... Subject: Other
Keywords: cogging torque, cogging torque minimization, finite element method, magnet machines, multipolar
This paper focuses on the matter of cogging torque reduction by combining various methods of cogging torque minimization. Due to the high costs of prototype construction, cogging torque is minimized during the design phase by using numerical methods, while computer simulations are used to find a magnetic circuit arrangement for which the cogging torque has the smallest possible value. Cogging torque occurs as a result of combined impact of the magnetic field of a permanent magnet located at rotor and stator with variable magnetic conductivity depending on an angle of rotation. It is a pulsating torque and occurs permanently during machine operation, impacting the operation of the entire device cooperating with the electric machine and causing vibrations, tension, and noise. It results in braking torque and subsequent power losses and leads to faster wear and tear of machine structural elements. High cogging torque values cause problems with rotational speed adjustment. In the case of e... [more]

Minghui Yang, Chunsheng Wang, Yukun Hu, Zijian Liu, Caixin Yan, Shuhang He
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: equivalent input disturbance, load frequency control, multi-area interconnected power system, photovoltaic generation subsystem
With the rapid increase of photovoltaic (PV) penetration and distributed grid access, photovoltaic generation (PVG)-integrated multi-area power systems may be disturbed by more uncertain factors, such as PVG, grid-tie inverter parameters, and resonance. These uncertain factors will exacerbate the frequency fluctuations of PVG integrated multi-area interconnected power systems. For such system, this paper proposes a load frequency control (LFC) strategy based on double equivalent-input-disturbance (EID) controllers. The PVG linear model and the multi-area interconnected power system linear model were established, respectively, and the disturbances were caused by grid voltage fluctuations in PVG subsystem and PV output power fluctuation and load change in multi-area interconnected power system. In PVG subsystems and multi-area interconnected power systems, two EID controllers add differently estimated equivalent system disturbances, which has the same effect as the actual disturbance, to... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: composite membrane, electrolyte, fuel cell, ionomer, perfluorinated sulfonic acid
Poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) porous substrate-reinforced composite membranes for energy conversion technologies are prepared and characterized. In particular, we develop a new hydrophilic treatment method by in-situ biomimetic silicification for PTFE substrates having high porosity (60−80%) since it is difficult to impregnate ionomer into strongly hydrophobic PTFE porous substrates for the preparation of composite membranes. The thinner substrate having ~5 μm treated by the gallic acid/(3-trimethoxysilylpropyl)diethylenetriamine solution with the incubation time of 30 min shows the best hydrophilic treatment result in terms of contact angle. In addition, the composite membranes using the porous substrates show the highest proton conductivity and the lowest water uptake and swelling ratio. Membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) using the composite membranes (thinner and lower proton conductivity) and Nafion 212 (thicker and higher proton conductivity), which have similar areal resista... April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: dye-sensitized solar cells, polymer gel electrolyte, quasi-solid-state, TiO2 nanotube
Free-standing TiO2 nanotube (NT) electrodes have attracted much attention for application in solid- or quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) because of their suitable pore structure for the infiltration of solid electrolytes. However, few studies have been performed on the relationship between nanostructures of these NT electrodes and the photovoltaic properties of the solid- or quasi-solid-state DSSCs. Here, we prepare vertically aligned and highly ordered TiO2 NT electrodes via a two-step anodization method for application in quasi-solid-state DSSCs that employs a polymer gel electrolyte. The length of NT arrays is controlled in the range of 10−42 μm by varying the anodization time, and the correlation between NT length and the photovoltaic properties of quasi-solid-state DSSCs is investigated. As the NT length increases, the roughness factor of the electrode is enlarged, leading to the higher dye-loading; however, photovoltage is gradually decreased, resulting in an o... [more]

Keywords: classroom, indoor air pollution, indoor environmental quality (IEQ), natural ventilation, performance
There are more than 200 thousand pupils in Latvia. Most of them are still learning in non-renovated classrooms without proper mechanical ventilation. The classrooms are often ventilated only during the breaks by opening windows. This can lead to increased CO2 levels and reduced mental performance. To test how CO2 concentration in classrooms influences student attention level and their ability to perform mental tasks, the students had to complete a short test at the start and the end of the class. At the same time CO2 concentration, temperature and relative humidity were logged. In addition, an anonymous survey on how the pupils felt regarding the overall indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in the classroom, their thermal sensation, are they fatigued, any difficulty concentrating and if they have headaches during the lesson performed. The measurements were performed in a Secondary School in Daugavpils, Latvia. The analysis of results shows that existing 10 min breaks are not enough to fu... [more]

Optimization of the fatty acid profile in microalgae is one of the key strategies for obtaining valuable products and sustainable biofuels. Light intensity and light regimes exert an impact on the growth and metabolic process in microalgae. The objective of the present investigations was to assess the effect of light intensity and continuous light vs. photoperiod conditions on the growth and changes in the biomass composition in Eustigmatos magnus, with a focus on bioactive molecules such as lipids and fatty acids. The highest daily productivity of Eustigmatos magnus biomass and lipid yields were detected at continuous illumination and at the highest intensity of light. The results show that the content and composition of fatty acids was influenced by the culture conditions. The biomass of Eustigmatos magnus contained the highest concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the pphotoperiod conditions with the highest light intensity. This study shows that Eustigmatos magnus has a... [more]
Analysis of Energy Transition Impact on the Low-Voltage Network Using Stochastic Load and Generation Models

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: copula stochastic modeling, energy transition, low voltage distribution network
The energy transition poses a challenge for the electricity distribution network design as new energy technologies cause increasing and uncertain network loads. Traditional static load models cannot cope with the stochastic nature of this new technology adoption. Furthermore, traditional nonlinear power methods have difficulty evaluating very large networks with millions of cables, because they are computationally expensive. This paper proposes a method which uses copulas for modeling the uncertainty of technology adoption and load profiles, and combines it with a fast linear load flow model. The copulas are able to accurately model the stochastic behavior of solar irradiance, load measurements, and mobility data, converting them into electricity load profiles. The linear load flow model has better scalability and stability compared to traditional load flow models. The models are applied to a case study which uses a real-world dataset consisting of a realistic technology adoption scena... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: congestions in distribution networks, heat pumps and heat battery, pv and battery, reducing peaks caused by dynamic pricing, social housing in Northern Ireland, tariff design
Decarbonisation of heat and transport will cause congestion issues in distribution networks. To avoid expensive network investments, demand flexibility is necessary to move loads from peak to off-peak periods. We provide a method and metric for assessing and selecting the optimal demand response strategy for a given network congestion scenario and applied it to a case study network in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. We proposed a Price Approximation/Mean Grouping strategy to deal with the issue of congestions occurring at the lowest-price period in real-time pricing schemes. The Mean Grouping strategy increased the average lowest-price hours from 1.32 to 3.76. We show that a three-cluster tariff is effective in solving medium congestion issues in Northern Ireland and could save consumers an average of £117/year on their heating bill. However, for networks with low headroom suffering from serious congestion issues, a smart control strategy is needed.
Review on Energy Efficiency Progresses, Technologies and Strategies in the Ceramic Sector Focusing on Waste Heat Recovery

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ceramic industry, Energy Efficiency, thermal processes, waste heat recovery
Thermal processes represent a considerable part of the total energy consumption in manufacturing industry, in sectors such as steel, aluminium, cement, ceramic and glass, among others. It can even be the predominant type of energy consumption in some sectors. High thermal energy processes are mostly associated to high thermal losses, (commonly denominated as waste heat), reinforcing the need for waste heat recovery (WHR) strategies. WHR has therefore been identified as a relevant solution to increase energy efficiency in industrial thermal applications, namely in energy intensive consumers. The ceramic sector is a clear example within the manufacturing industry mainly due to the fuel consumption required for the following processes: firing, drying and spray drying. This paper reviews studies on energy efficiency improvement measures including WHR practices applied to the ceramic sector. This focuses on technologies and strategies which have significant potential to promote energy savin... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: CEEMDAN, heat load prediction, residential buildings, SVR
The energy demand of the district heating system (DHS) occupies an important part in urban energy consumption, which has a great impact on the energy security and environmental protection of a city. With the gradual improvement of people’s economic conditions, different groups of people now have different demands for thermal energy for their comfort. Hence, heat metering has emerged as an imperative for billing purposes and sustainable management of energy consumption. Therefore, forecasting the heat load of buildings with heat metering on the demand side is an important management strategy for DHSs to meet end-users’ needs and maintain energy-saving regulations and safe operation. However, the non-linear and non-stationary characteristics of buildings’ heat load make it difficult to predict consumption patterns accurately, thereby limiting the capacity of the DHS to deliver on its statutory functions satisfactorily. A novel ensemble prediction model is proposed to resolve this problem... [more]
