March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: forest biomass, railway transport, road transport, thermophysical properties, transport costs, wood chips
Forests are the main sources of wood chips delivered to the end customers by road or railway. This research analysed the impact of the quarter of the year: Q1 (January−March), Q2 (April−June), Q3 (July−September), Q4 (October−December) when wood chips were obtained over two consecutive years (2019−2020) and the type of transport used (railway and road) on the thermophysical properties of wood chips and the cost of their delivery. The mean moisture content in the wood chips was 38.28% and it was the highest (45.55%) in Q1, while in Q2 and Q3, this parameter was 8 and 17 percentage points (p.p.) lower. The mean lower heating value (LHV) of the chips was 10.46 GJ Mg−1. The chips delivered by road transport had a 4% higher LHV compared to those shipped by railway transport. The wood chips contained 3.42% d.m. of ash. The road transport at a distance of 200 km was found to be approximately 10% cheaper compared to the transport by rail for most of the study period, both with respect to 1 Mg... [more]
Modeling and Analysis of a Coated Tube Adsorber for Adsorption Heat Pumps
João M. S. Dias, Vítor A. F. Costa
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adsorption heat, adsorption heat pump, coated tube adsorber, coefficient of performance, specific heating power
This work investigates the effects of several parameters on the coefficient of performance (COP) and the specific heating power (SHP) of a coated-tube adsorber for adsorption heat pumps (AHP) suitable for water heating (space and/or domestic water heating). The COP and SHP are obtained based on physical models that have already been proven to adequately describe this type of adsorber. Several parameters are tested, namely, the regeneration, condenser and evaporator temperatures, the heat transfer fluid velocity, the tube diameter, the adsorbent coating thickness, the metal−adsorbent heat transfer coefficient, and the cycle time. Two different scenarios were tested, corresponding to distinct working conditions. The working conditions for Scenario A are suitable for pre-heating water in mild climates. Scenario B’s working conditions are based on the European standard EN16147. The maximum COP is obtained for regeneration temperatures of 75 °C and 95 °C for Scenarios A and B, respectively.... [more]

Keywords: 5G, eMBB, Energy Efficiency, mMTC, NFV, slicing, uRLLC
The definition of multiple slicing types in 5G has created a wide field for service innovation in communications. However, the advantages that network slicing has to offer remain to be fully exploited by today’s applications and users. An important area that can potentially benefit from 5G slicing is emergency communications for First Responders. The latter consists of heterogeneous teams, imposing different requirements on the connectivity network. In this paper, the RESPOND-A platform is presented, which provides First Responders with network-enabled tools on top of 5G on-scene planning, with enhanced service slicing capabilities tailored to emergency communications. Furthermore, a mapping of emergency services and communications to specific slice types is proposed to identify the current challenges in the field. Additionally, the proposed tentative mechanism is evaluated in terms of energy efficiency. Finally, the approach is summarized by discussing future steps in the convergence... [more]
Energy Management in the Railway Industry: A Case Study of Rail Freight Carrier in Poland
Aleksandra Kuzior, Marek Staszek
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Energy Efficiency, railway transportation, transportation
Energy is crucial to economic development, but its production usually has a negative impact on the environment. This ambivalence leads to the need for methods to improve energy efficiency. Transportation is one of the largest global energy consumers. Therefore, improving the energy efficiency of transportation is crucial for sustainable development. The aim of this article is to show the limitations of energy management in railways, resulting from the model of market regulation. The question in this context is whether only technological methods can be used in railways to steer its energy efficiency, as is suggested by the existing research. Critical analysis, desk research and a case study of Polish railway undertaking were used to find an answer to the research question. The discussion of the results shows that the European regulatory system leads to greater complications in the field of energy management than in other global regions, where railways are also important for the economy.... Georg Göhler, Anna-Lena Klingler, Florian Klausmann, Dieter Spath
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decentralised energy system, electric vehicles, Modelling, real-life demonstration, self-consumption, stationary battery
Intelligent integration of decentralised energy resources, local storage and direct consumption are key factors in achieving the transformation of the energy system. In this study, we present a modular simulation concept that allows the planning of decentralised energy systems for buildings and building blocks. In comparison to related studies, we use a simulation model for energy planning with a high time-resolution from the perspective of the energy system planner. In this study, we address the challenges of the grid connection in combination with an increasing number of electric vehicles (EV) in the future. The here developed model is applied for an innovative building block in Germany with a photovoltaic (PV) system, a combined heat and power (CHP) unit, battery storage and electric vehicles. The results of the simulation are validated with real-life data to illustrate the practical relevance and show that our simulation model is able to support the planning of decentralised energy... Development of an Efficient Modelling Approach for Fin-Type Heat-Exchangers in Self-Recuperative Burners
Nicolas Dinsing, Nico Schmitz, Christian Schubert, Herbert Pfeifer
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, fin-type heat exchanger, heat transfer, industrial furnace, radiant tube, self-recuperative burner
Self-recuperative burners are a common solution for efficient combustion systems in industrial furnaces. Due to the geometric complexity of the recuperators, a detailed CFD simulation is computationally expensive and not feasible for simulation models of burner-integrated systems such as radiant tubes. Especially in the FSI studies of radiant tubes, the temperature of the radiant tube surrounding the burner is decisive for the final results. The exclusion of the recuperator from the simulation models introduces significant uncertainties in the simulations results. The presented paper describes an innovative, efficient approach to model a fin-type recuperator in which the recuperator is geometrically reduced. The resulting acceleration of the numerical simulation makes a fully dynamic modelling of the recuperator in a radiant tube simulation possible. Specifically designed source terms are used to model pressure loss and heat transfer inside the recuperator to match results obtained wit... [more]
Numerical Study on the Influence of Vortex Generator Arrangement on Heat Transfer Enhancement of Oil-Cooled Motor
Junjie Zhao, Bin Zhang, Xiaoli Fu, Shenglin Yan
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: arrangement, heat transfer, numerical simulation, vortex generator
At present, vortex generators have been extensively used in radiators to improve the overall heat transfer performance. However, there is no research on the effect of vortex generators on the ends of motor coils. Meanwhile, the current research mainly concentrates on the attack angle, shape and size, and lacks a detailed study on the transverse and longitudinal distance and arrangement of vortex generators. In this paper, the improved dimensionless number R is used as the key index to evaluate the overall performance of enhanced heat transfer. Firstly, the influence of the attack angle on heat transfer enhancement is discussed through a single pair of rectangular vortex generators, and the results demonstrate that the vortex generator with a 45° attack angle is superior. On this basis, we compare the effects of different longitudinal distances (2 h, 4 h, and 6 h, h meaning the height of vortex generator) on enhanced heat transfer under four distribution modes: Flow-Up (FU), Flow-Down (... Impact of Network Charge Design in an Energy System with Large Penetration of Renewables and High Prosumer Shares
Christoph Schick, Nikolai Klempp, Kai Hufendiek
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy system modeling, grid charge mechanisms, prosumers, regulatory framework
The transformation of our energy system toward zero net CO2 emissions correlates with a stronger use of low energy density renewable energy sources (RES), such as photovoltaic (PV) energy. As a source of flexibility, distributed PV systems, in particular, are oftentimes installed in combination with battery storage systems. These storage systems are dispatchable, i.e., controllable by the operating owners, who can thereby take over an active market role as energy prosumers. The particular battery operation modes are based on the individual prosumer decisions, which, in turn, are strongly affected by the regulatory framework in place. Regulatory frameworks differ from country to country, but almost all regulatory frameworks feature a network charge mechanism, which allocates network infrastructure and operating costs to the end customers. This raises the question of the extent to which different network charges lead to different prosumer decisions, i.e., battery operation modes, and thu... [more]
Downcycling and Upcycling in Rehabilitation and Adaptive Reuse of Pre-Existing Buildings: Re-Designing Technological Performances in an Environmental Perspective
Antonello Monsù Scolaro, Stefania De Medici
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: building recovery, downcycling, energy embodied, environmental balance, upcycling
The abandonment of the built heritage, as a result of functional or technological obsolescence or as a consequence of cultural, social, and economic trends, is steadily increasing. This great number of buildings, worldwide spread, offers a huge opportunity to reduce the environmental impacts related to the construction industry. Nonetheless, the recovery and reuse interventions that require the implementation of residual technological performance, to accommodate new uses, are not always environmentally neutral. Therefore, a new design approach needs to be developed so as to improve the buildings’ technological performance and enhance resources and energy already incorporated in buildings. The circular economy principles in the building sector, performance-based building design together with downcycling and upcycling theories are applied to develop a methodology aiming to reduce the environmental impacts within the rehabilitation and refurbishment design process. Starting from the build... [more]

Elikplim Afelete, Wooyong Jung
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: contractor-related, controllable factors, design change, design-related, distribution and transmission project, owner-related, power plant project, renewable project, uncontrollable factors
Design change is a common but significant problem in construction projects. Issues of delay, cost overruns, claims, and disputes in projects occur as a result. However, design change studies in the power-project area are less often discussed. As a result, the primary objective of this study was to identify important cause factors of design changes according to different power-project types in Ghana. Following a thorough assessment of the literature, 36 potential causes were identified, which were narrowed down by expert reviews to 30. In this study, power projects were classified into three categories: power plant, renewable, and distribution and transmission. The results indicate owner-related financial problems as the most important cause of design change for all three project types, followed by the second and third most significant in each of the categories, respectively: errors and omission in design and problems or unforeseen site conditions in power plant projects; deficient qual... Piotr Kułyk, Łukasz Augustowski
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clean energy, energy economics, homer model, hybrid energy, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The research was a response to the search for alternative energy sources and the assessment of their profitability and legitimacy of use. The assessment used combined energy sources in the form of wind, solar, and natural gas energy. The research was carried out in various locations with varying degrees of sunlight and in various wind zones, which was motivated by the adopted strategy of increasing the importance of non-conventional energy sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The evaluation was performed using the Homer Grid software. The studies showed the justification for the use of hybrid energy sources, combining renewable and non-renewable sources, at the current stage of development. In the conditions of the Lubuskie Voivodeship, the level of insolation was more important than the more favourable wind zone in such a model. Higher economic efficiency of the hybrid model was obtained in the southern location, with slightly less favourable conditions for wind installation... [more]

Irena Matyasik, Małgorzata Labus, Maria Kierat, Karol Spunda
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Istebna Beds, Menilite Beds, Py/GC, pyrolysis, Rock-Eval, source rocks
The study of the source rocks was carried out with the use of various analytical methods in order to assess their generation potential and to predict the decomposition products of organic matter. The selected samples from the Menilite Beds from the Silesian and Dukla units, as well as the Istebna layers from the Silesian unit, which are classified as weak and medium source rocks in the Carpathian oil system, were examined. The generation potential and type of the products obtained from the pyrolysis of the analyzed source rocks, despite the often comparable overall content of organic matter, are significantly different. Menilite shale generated a higher abundance of hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkenes, and isoalkanes) by stage pyrolysis, which suggested that the organic matter of Menilite shale is different from the Istebna source rocks. Moreover, the thermogravimetric analysis showed a two-stage weight loss in the case of Menilite shales, while the Istebna shales were characterized by a on... [more]
A Deterioration Diagnosis Circuit of a Lithium-Ion Battery Using Microcomputer Implementing Z-Transform Convolution
Naoyuki Yoshioka, Naoto Nagaoka
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: convolution, deterioration diagnosis, equivalent circuit parameters, lithium-ion battery, state of charge (SOC), z-transformation
The deterioration of lithium-ion batteries has been detected by an increase in the battery impedance by means of an alternating current method or a battery capacity test. These methods require an interruption of the operation because the battery has to be removed. A method estimating equivalent circuit parameters of a lithium-ion battery during operation is proposed in this article. The increase in the internal impedance has a close relation to the deterioration of the battery. The circuit is expressed by a resister and an RC parallel circuit connected in series. The parameters can be estimated by applying a convolution technique to the voltage and current fluctuation of the battery during operation. A diagnosis circuit using a microcomputer is developed using a simple algorithm employing z-transformation in the parameter estimation. The estimated parameters depend on its state of charge (SOC) and ambient temperature. The SOC dependency is solved by estimating timing, and the temperatu... [more]

Anderson J. C. Sena, Rodrigo M. S. de Oliveira, Júlio A. S. do Nascimento
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Frequency Resolved Partial Discharges (FRPD), hydro-generators, microstrip antenna, partial discharges, PD Spectral Pulse Counting Map (PD-SPCM), UHF method
A partial discharge (PD) classification methodology based counting PD pulses in the spectral domain is proposed and presented in this paper. The spectral counting data are processed using the proposed PD Spectral Pulse Counting Mapping technique (PD-SPCM), which leads to a Frequency-Resolved Partial Discharges (FRPD) map. The proposed map is then used for PD detection and classification. In this work, corona and slot FRPDs are presented in frequency bands up to 500 MHz, obtained from laboratory measurements performed using two hydro-generator stator bars. The electromagnetic signals from the PDs were captured using a patch antenna designed for this purpose and a spectral analyzer. The corona and slot PDs were chosen because one can be mistakenly classified as the other because they may present similar Phase Resolved PD (PRPD) maps and may occupy shared spectral bands. Furthermore, corona and slot PDs can occur concurrently. The obtained results show that the corona and slot PDs can be... [more]
Evaluating Terrain as a Turbulence Generation Method
Patrick Hawbecker, Matthew Churchfield
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: large-eddy simulation, terrain, turbulence
When driving microscale large-eddy simulations with mesoscale model solutions, turbulence will take space to develop, known as fetch, on the microscale domain. To reduce fetch, it is common to add perturbations near the boundaries to speed up turbulence development. However, when simulating domains over complex terrain, it is possible that the terrain itself can quickly generate turbulence within the boundary layer. It is shown here that rugged terrain is able to generate turbulence without the assistance of a perturbation strategy; however, the levels of turbulence generated are improved when adding perturbations at the inlet. Flow over smoothed, but not flat, terrain fails to generate adequate turbulence throughout the boundary layer in all tests conducted herein. Sensitivities to the strength of the mean wind speed and boundary layer height are investigated and show that higher wind speeds produce turbulence over terrain features that slower wind speeds do not. Further, by increasin... [more]
A Bibliometric Review of Sustainable Product Design
Pingfei Jiang, Elena Dieckmann, Ji Han, Peter R. N. Childs
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: design, environment, literature, product, review, Sustainability
Consideration of sustainability in product development is becoming increasingly important and encompasses many aspects of product design. In this study, a bibliometric review of recent sustainable product design publications using Web of Science and VOSViewer is carried out. The review indicates that the majority of publications concerning sustainable product design is oriented towards environmental science-led subject areas and production-led journals. Analysis of author keyword co-occurrences reveals that circular economy, life cycle assessment, sustainable management, and optimization are the most popular topics in sustainable product design research. The analysis also reveals that the researchers fail to link sustainability research to activities in product design, which leads to the lack of access to relevant research that can make products more sustainable. Building on the findings, the authors propose four future research directions that aim to guide researchers to better correl... [more]
Review on Carbon Capture in ICE Driven Transport
Alexander García-Mariaca, Eva Llera-Sastresa
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Carbon Capture, CO2 emissions, internal combustion engine, mobile sources, TSA
The transport sector powered by internal combustion engines (ICE) requires novel approaches to achieve near-zero CO2 emissions. In this direction, using CO2 capture and storage (CCS) systems onboard could be a good option. However, CO2 capture in mobile sources is currently challenging due to the operational and space requirements to install a CCS system onboard. This paper presents a systematic review of the CO2 capture in ICE driven transport to know the methods, techniques, and results of the different studies published so far. Subsequently, a case study of a CCS system working in an ICE is presented, where the energy and space needs are evaluated. The review reveals that the most suitable technique for CO2 capture is temperature swing adsorption (TSA). Moreover, the sorbents with better properties for this task are PPN-6-CH2-DETA and MOF-74-Mg. Finally, it shows that it is necessary to supply the energy demand of the CCS system and the option is to take advantage of the waste heat... [more]
Towards Cross-Standard Compliance Readiness: Security Requirements Model for Smart Grid

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compliance, critical infrastructure protection, requirement prioritization, security requirements, smart grid, standards
The critical infrastructure is constantly under cyber and physical threats. Applying security controls without guidance or traceability can create a false sense of security. Security standards facilitate security knowledge and control best practices in a more systematic way. However, the number of standards is continually increasing. Product providers that operate in multiple geographical regions often face the obligation to comply with multiple standards simultaneously. This introduces the problem of the convenient interpretation of different standards. Thus, a comprehensive analysis of the requirements from different security standards and guidelines applicable to the smart grid has been performed to detect similarities that can be shaped into entities of the conceptual model for requirement representation. The purpose of the model—presented in a form of a Unified Modeling Language (UML) class diagram—is to give product providers a canonical way to map requirements from arbitrary sta... [more]

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: FHS-FSPCM, innovative technology, performance, power increasing, storage, thermal energy
Photovoltaic (PV) panels must be equipped with a cooling system to increase their electrical output generation. Despite numerous publications on the fabrication of form-stable phase change material (FSPCM) for thermal energy storage application, studies on the usage of FSPCM for PV cooling are incredibly limited. In this work, the cooling performance of myristic acid FSPCM encapsulated with cross-linked nitrile rubber (NBR) was investigated. A fin heat sink (FHS) was employed to hold the FSPCM. The thermal performance of the FHS embedded with FSPCM (FHS-FSPCM) was preliminarily tested in an indoor setup. Results show that the FHS-FSPCM has a lower temperature distribution curve than the bare FHS, highlighting the increase in cooling capability of fabricated FSPCM. Field-testing of PV panels integrated with an FHS-FSPCM displayed that FSPCM manages to reduce the operating temperature of the panel by 4 to 15 °C and increase power output generation by 38.61%.

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: all-electric aircraft, electrical machines, hybrid-electric aircraft, propulsion design, review, specific power, superconducting machines
The development of electric aircraft is becoming an important technology for achieving the goals set by the European Commission for the reduction of gases emissions by 2050 in the aeronautical transportation system. However, there is a technology gap between the current values of specific power in commercial electric machines and those required for aeronautical applications. Therefore, the search for alternative materials and non-conventional designs is mandatory. One emergent solution is using superconducting machines and systems to overcome the current limits of conventional electrical machines. This work reviews the new hybrid and all-electric aircraft tendencies, complementing it with recent research on the design and development of high specific power superconducting machines. This includes the main topologies for hybrid and all-electric aircraft, with an overview of the ongoing worldwide projects of these aircraft types, systematizing the main characteristics of their propulsion... A Method of Analyzing the Residual Values of Low-Emission Vehicles Based on a Selected Expert Method Taking into Account Stochastic Operational Parameters
Piotr Wróblewski, Wojciech Lewicki
March 7, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: development policy, electromobility, exploitation factors, low-emission, numerical modeling, residual value
Increasing the market share of low-emission vehicles in relation to individual mobility is one of the main postulates of modern transport policy. In the discussion on low-emission and the new structure of the car fleet, the role of new vehicles is emphasized above all, ignoring the importance of the secondary market. In recent years, both in Poland and in other European Union countries, there has been a noticeable dynamic development of electromobility implementation processes in urban areas, the initial effect of which is increasing market accessibility to commercial vehicles with electric EV/BEV, hybrid HEV/PHEV and fuel cell powered FCEV. As in the case of vehicles powered by conventional ICEV fuels, also in relation to those defined as low-emission, their residual value is lost along with the operational process. Information on this variable is important both for the owner of a newly purchased vehicle, which after the period of its operation will decide to sell it as well as to the... [more]
Physicochemical Variation of the Main Components during Wild Pretreatment Process Based on the Concept of the Whole Utilization of Bamboo

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bamboo, fractionation, hemicellulose, lignin, whole utilization
Attempting to correlate the characteristics of the fractionated components from bamboo to its susceptibility to enzyme is often inconclusive depending on the parameters of pretreatment conditions. Based on the integrated analysis of chemical components, cellulose bioconversion, characteristic property of isolated hemicellulose, and lignin, the optimal mild pretreatment operation for Moso bamboo was 4% NaOH in 20% ethanol aqueous solution. A total of 91.9% mass was successfully recovered, and 66% bioconversion efficiency of the cellulosic sample was finally achieved. Meanwhile, over 25% hemicelluloses and 7% lignin were isolated, and the characteristic analysis indicated that the fractionated biomacromolecule maintained the original core structure, which is a benefit to be further utilized for the production of chemicals or polymers.

March 7, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: amphiphilic polymers, hydrophobic monomer, molecular dynamics simulation, viscosity reduction mechanism, viscosity reduction of heavy oil
In order to reduce the viscosity of heavy oil, the performance of emulsifying viscosity reducers is limited. In this study, a new kind of amphiphilic low molecular weight viscosity reducer was prepared by emulsion copolymerization of acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), and Butene benzene (PB). The synthesis feasibility and viscosity reduction mechanism of viscosity reducer in heavy oil were explored using Materials Studio software from the perspective of molecular dynamics. The results of the molecular dynamics simulation revealed that the addition of viscosity reducer into heavy oil varied the potential energy, non-potential energy, density and hydrogen bond distribution of heavy oil. Benefiting from its structure, the benzene ring in PB was well embedded in the interlayer structure of asphaltene, contributing to weaken the network structure of the heavy oil. Moreover, the two strong polar groups (COO− and SO3−) of AA and AMPS, which c... [more]

Keywords: energy saving, indirect evaporative cooling (IEC), natural ventilation, radiant cooling, sustainable building, thermal comfort
A hybrid cooling system which combines natural ventilation with a radiant cooling system for a hot and humid climate was studied. Indirect evaporative cooling was used to produce chilled water at temperatures slightly higher than the dew point. With this hybrid system, the condensation issue on the panel surface of a chilled ceiling was overcome. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was employed to determine the cooling load and the parameters required for thermal comfort analysis for this hybrid system in an office-sized, well-insulated test room. Upon closer investigation, it was found that the thermal comfort by the hybrid system was acceptable only in limited outdoor conditions. Therefore, the hybrid system with a secondary fresh air supply system was suggested. Furthermore, the energy consumptions of conventional all-air, radiant cooling, and hybrid systems including the secondary air supply system were compared under similar thermal comfort conditions. March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: agriculture, Data Envelopment Analysis, economic-energy efficiency, environmental efficiency, EU countries
The analysis of the economic efficiency of agriculture has been the subject of numerous studies. An economically efficient agricultural sector is not always environmentally efficient. Agriculture is a large emitter of greenhouse gases. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that food production and agriculture are responsible for 21−37% of total global CO2 emissions. Due to the comprehensive assessment of the agricultural efficiency, it is worthwhile to apply to its measurement an integrated approach based on economic, energy and environmental aspects. These aspects were the main reasons for undertaking this research. The purpose of the study was to determine the economic, energy and environmental efficiency of agriculture in the EU Member States in 2019. The environmental analyses relate to the period 1990−2019. A total of 26 member states of the European Union (excluding Malta and Luxembourg) were selected for research. The sources of materials were Eurostat and the Eur... [more]
