March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aeroelasticity, Computational Fluid Dynamics, optical flow, photovoltaic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, wind tunnel test
Despite their simplicity, photovoltaic (PV) modules are often arranged in structures that can be affected by severe and complex wind loads: in this context, the wind flow and the dynamic excitation induced by vortex shedding can introduce unexpected aeroelastic responses. This work introduces a novel wind tunnel application of experimental techniques to address this issue by the use of flow visualisation and video postprocessing, through the optical flow algorithm. Numerical simulations based on unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier−Stokes (RANS) models are performed and compared against the experimental wind tunnel tests on a PV panel that was also instrumented with pressure taps. A setup with a 65∘ tilt angle was examined because, based on preliminary analyses, it was considered interesting for the free flow−wake transition associated with the dynamic response of the PV panel. The comparison of the experimental and numerical average wind fields supported that the proposed optical flow me... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combustion, Computational Fluid Dynamics, fuel, gas turbine, kerosene, numerical analysis
The previously developed approaches for fuel droplet heating and evaporation processes, mainly using the Discrete Multi Component Model (DMCM), are investigated for the aerodynamic combustion simulation. The models have been recently improved and generalised for a broad range of bio-fossil fuel blends so that the application areas are broadened with an increased accuracy. The main distinctive features of these models are that they consider the impacts of species’ thermal conductivities and diffusivities within the droplets in order to account for the temperature gradient, transient diffusion of species and recirculation. A formulation of fuel surrogates is made using the recently introduced model, referred to as “Complex Fuel Surrogate Model (CFSM)”, and analysing their heating, evaporation and combustion characteristics. The CFSM is aimed to reduce the full composition of fuel to a much smaller number of components based on their mass fractions, and to formulate fuel surrogates. Such... [more]

Anna Górska, Monika Krawiec
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cointegration, fuels, Granger causality, Visegrad Group countries
A fuel market is an important sector of the economy and fuel prices influence the prices of numerous products and services. This paper focuses on the analysis of the interrelationships between markets of fuels in the Visegrad Group (V4) countries. The research is based on weekly prices of Pb95 gasoline and diesel in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia observed from January 2016 through December 2020. After performing the preliminary statistical analysis, the long-term relationships between the prices of fuels are investigated through application of the cointegrated regression Durbin−Watson (CRDW) test. Next, Granger causality is tested to answer the question of whether changes in prices of fuels in separate V4 countries Granger-cause changes in prices of fuels in other V4 countries. The cointegration research uses logarithmic prices, whereas causality investigation is based on their first differences. The results reveal long-term relationships between the prices of Pb95 g... March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: flexible wave energy converters, niche applications, Wave Energy
We review wave energy conversion technologies for niche applications, i.e., kilowatt-scale systems that allow for more agile design, faster deployment and easier operation than utility scale systems. The wave energy converters for niche markets analysed in this paper are classified into breakwater-integrated, hybrid, devices for special applications. We show that niche markets are emerging as a very vibrant landscape, with several such technologies having now achieved operational stage, and others undergoing full-scale sea trials. This review also includes flexible devices, which started as niche applications in the 1980s and are now close to commercial maturity. We discuss the strong potential of flexible devices in reducing costs and improving survivability and reliability of wave energy systems. Finally, we show that the use of WECs in niche applications is supporting the development of utility-scale projects by accumulating field experience, demonstrating success stories of grid in... Mingfei Huang, Yongting Deng, Hongwen Li, Meng Shao, Jing Liu
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: adaptive control, permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), resonant controller, sliding mode control (SMC)
Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) have attracted great attention in the field of electric drive system. However, the disturbances caused by parameter mismatching, model uncertainty, external load and torque ripple seriously weaken the control accuracy. The traditional adaptive sliding mode control (ASMC) methodology can address slow-varying uncertainties/disturbances whose frequencies are located at the bandwidth of the filter used to design the adaptive law well; however, it has been barely discussed with respect to the periodic situation. In this paper, we extend the ASMC arrangement to periodic case to suppress the torque ripple by using a series-structure resonant controller. Firstly, a typical SMC is designed to force the tracking error of speed to converge to zero and obtain a certain capacity to disturbance. Then, the improved adaptive law is incorporated to estimate the lumped disturbance and torque ripple. The improved adaptive law is enhanced by embedding the resona... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, food waste, hydrogen sulfide production, mill scale, sulfur-reducing agent
Direct addition of sulfur-reducing agents during anaerobic digestion (AD) is very effective in controlling hydrogen sulfide (H2S) content in biogas, although one major problem is the high operational cost due to the large amount of chemicals used. The objective of this study was to remove H2S using a waste mill scale (MS) as a sulfur-reducing agent. To evaluate its feasibility, MS was added to AD fed with food waste (FW) at concentrations between 0 and 160 g MS/kg total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) during the batch test, and the experimental results were compared to those of the batch test with the addition of iron chloride (FeCl3). Both FeCl3 and MS played an important role as electro-conductive materials in improving methane productivity by promoting direct interspecies electron transfer. An increase in H2S removal efficiency was observed with increases in both materials. In total, 30%, 60%, and 90% of H2S production based on the maximum sulfur in the form of H2S (control) was 3.7,... March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: denoising, discrete spectral interference, Gaussian white noise, high voltage cables, partial discharge, stochastic pulse interference
Online detection of partial discharges (PD) is imperative for condition monitoring of high voltage equipment as well as power cables. However, heavily contaminated sites often burden the signals with various types of noise that can be challenging to remove (denoise). This paper proposes an algorithm based on the maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT) to denoise PD signals originating from defects in power cables contaminated with various levels of noises. The three most common noise types, namely, Gaussian white noise (GWN), discrete spectral interference (DSI), and stochastic pulse shaped interference (SPI) are considered. The algorithm is applied to an experimentally acquired void-produced partial discharge in a power cable. The MODWT-based algorithm achieved a good improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and in the normalized correlation coefficient (NCC) for the three types of noises. The MODWT-based algorithm performance was also compared to that of the empirica... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: 3D printing, finite element analysis (FEA), magnetorheological (MR) fluid, mechanical engineering, soft-rigid gripper, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)
This paper presents a study of penetrating a pin into a magnetorheological fluid (MR) cushion focused on the force measurement. The research is supported by detailed finite element analysis (FEA) of the magnetic field distributions in several magnetic field exciters applied to control rheological properties of the MR inside the cushion. The cushion is a part of the finger pad of the jaw soft-rigid gripper and was made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) using 3D printing technology. For the pin-penetrating setup, the use of a holding electromagnet and a magnetic holder were considered and verified by simulation as well as experiment. In further simulation studies, two design solutions using permanent magnets as the source of the magnetic field in the cushion volume to control MR fluid viscosity were considered. The primary aim of the study was to analyze the potential of using an MR fluid in a cushion pad and to investigate the potential for changing its viscosity using different magne... [more]

Analysis of Safety Requirements for Securing the Semi-Trailer Truck on the Intermodal Railway Wagon
Michał Opala
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined transport, intermodal transport, piggyback, safety
The article presented the issue of securing semi-trailer trucks and trailers during their transport using intermodal railway wagons as a part of combined transport. This issue was analysed in different operational conditions related to loading level, cross-winds influence, inertia forces due to the emergency braking, and track curvature. According to general rules of loading and securing cargo, described in the internal and UIC regulations, the transported load should be positioned and secured with minimised risk of undesirable displacement or rolling over during transport. Basic analysis showed that adverse conditions such as strong winds or emergency braking may require adequate additional cargo protection. The lack thereof may result in a severe accident or damage to the transported vehicle or the nearby structures. The presented results for generic road and railway freight vehicles showed that the required anti-rollover torque for a semi-trailer mounted on the railway wagon platfor... [more]

Keywords: calorific value, durability, fast pyrolysis, pellets, pyrolytic lignin, thermal treatment, torrefaction, wood residues
Thermal treatments such as torrefaction and fast pyrolysis are commonly employed methods to produce biofuels with high-energetic properties. In this study, wood chips were heat-treated at different temperatures of torrefaction (315 °C) and fast pyrolysis (400 and 454 °C) to form energetic pellets. Three softwoods, jack pine (JP), balsam fir (BF), and black spruce (BS), were evaluated. Pellets are produced using 20% moisture content and 15% pyrolytic lignin as a binder. Untreated- and treated-wood residues were characterized by surface chemistry, elemental analysis, and chemical composition, whereas all pellets were characterized in terms of density, high heat value (HHV), and durability. Results showed that both thermal treatments caused significant changes in the physicochemical structure of wood residues. Using temperatures higher than 315 °C leads to the disappearance of hydroxyl groups, a decrease in oxygen and hydrogen contents, and an increase in carbon content. Regardless of the... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: controller design, neural network, nonlinear differentiator, sliding mode control, stabilized platform
A neural network-based global fast terminal sliding mode control method with non-linear differentiator (NNFTSMC) is proposed in this paper to design the dynamic control system for three-axis stabilized platform. The dynamic model of the three-axis stabilized platform is established with various uncertainties and unknown external disturbances. To overcome the external disturbance and reduce the output chatter of the classical sliding mode control (SMC) system, the improved global fast terminal sliding mode control method using the nonlinear differentiator and neural network techniques is proposed and implemented in the three-axis stabilized platform system. The global fast terminal sliding mode controller can make the controlled state approach to the sliding surface in a finite time. To eliminate the system output chatter, the nonlinear differentiator is employed to obtain the differentiation of the signal. The neural network is introduced to estimate the uncertainties disturbances to i... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electromagnetic transients, lumped parameter model, numerical spurious oscillations, short transmission lines
The Lumped Parameter Model (LPM) is a known approach to represent overhead transmission lines (TLs), especially when these elements comprehend a few tens of kilometers. LPMs employ a large number of cascaded π-circuits to compute accurately the transient responses. These responses contain numerical spurious oscillations (NSO) characterized by erroneous peaks which distort the transient responses, mainly their peak values. Two modified LPM topologies composed of damping resistances inserted along the longitudinal or transversal branches of the cascaded π-circuits offer significant mitigations in the NSO. In this paper, in an effort to have the maximum mitigation of the NSO and low distortion in the transient responses, two modified topologies with optimized damping resistances are proposed to represent short TLs. Results demonstrate expressive attenuation in the peaks of NSO which reflect good agreement in comparison with the responses computed by the Bergeron’s line model. The mitigati... [more]
Potential for the Integrated Production of Biojet Fuel in Swedish Plant Infrastructures
Karin Ericsson
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: biojet fuel, drop-in biofuels, integration, plant infrastructure, sustainable aviation fuel, Sweden
Replacing fossil jet fuel with biojet fuel is an important step towards reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from aviation. To this end, Sweden has adopted a GHG mandate on jet fuel, complementing those on petrol and diesel. The GHG mandate on jet fuel requires a gradual reduction in the fuel’s GHG emissions to up to 27% by 2030. This paper estimates the potential production of biojet fuel in Sweden for six integrated production pathways and analyzes what they entail with regard to net biomass input and the amount of hydrogen required for upgrading to fuel quality. Integrated production of biofuel intermediates from forestry residues and by-products at combined heat and power plants as well as at the forest industry, followed by upgrading to biojet fuel and other transportation fuels at a petroleum refinery, was assumed in all the pathways. The potential output of bio-based transportation fuels was estimated to 90 PJ/y, including 22 PJ/y of biojet fuel. The results indicate that it... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: emission, hard coal, harmful substances, low-power boiler, water steam
This academic paper revolves around the results of research on the change in emission parameters of the used heating boiler following the introduction of the overheated water stream, which had an impact on different emission parameters. The research results provide an insight into the hard coal combustion process, which had a significant impact on the change in the chemical composition of exhaust gases: it contributed to the lower mass concentration of the emitted dust and black carbon (PM) as well as nitric oxides (NOx) while, at the same time, playing a significant role in increasing the mass concentration of the emitted carbon oxide (CO). Two types of devices were used for the purposes of conducting the research at hand: a boiler with an automatic fuel feeding system with one combustion chamber and a boiler with a combustion chamber and an afterburning chamber fitted over it. Apart from the measurements of mass concentration of the emitted harmful substances, the research also focus... [more]

March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: base oil, decision tree, Machine Learning, random forest, SVR, XGBoost
The quality of feedstock used in base oil processing depends on the source of the crude oil. Moreover, the refinery is fed with various blends of crude oil to meet the demand of the refining products. These circumstances have caused changes of quality of the feedstock for the base oil production. Often the feedstock properties deviate from the original properties measured during the process design phase. To recalculate and remodel using first principal approaches requires significant costs due to the detailed material characterizations and several pilot-plant runs requirements. To perform all material characterization and pilot plant runs every time the refinery receives a different blend of crude oil will simply multiply the costs. Due to economic reasons, only selected lab characterizations are performed, and the base oil processing plant is operated reactively based on the feedback of the lab analysis of the base oil product. However, this reactive method leads to loss in production... [more]

Jiaping Xie, Chao Wang, Wei Zhu, Hao Yuan
March 8, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: equivalent circuit model, fault diagnosis, fuel cell, support vector machine
The reliability and durability of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells are vital factors restricting their applications. Therefore, establishing an online fault diagnosis system is of great significance. In this paper, a multi-stage fault diagnosis method for the PEM fuel cell is proposed. First, the tests of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy under various fault conditions are conducted. Specifically, prone recoverable faults, such as flooding, membrane drying, and air starvation, are included, and different fault degrees from minor, moderate to severe, are covered. Based on this, an equivalent circuit model (ECM) is selected to fit impedance spectroscopy by the hybrid genetic particle swarm optimization algorithm, and then fault features are determined by the analysis of each model parameter under different fault conditions. Furthermore, a multi-stage fault diagnosis model is constructed with the support vector machine with the binary tree, in which fault features obtain... [more]

The establishment of the concept of sustainable, decentralised, multi-carrier energy systems, together with the declining costs of renewable energy technologies, has proposed changes in off-grid electrification interventions towards the development of integrated energy systems. Notwithstanding the potential benefits, the optimal capacity planning of such systems with multiple energy carriers—electricity, heating, cooling, hydrogen, biogas—is exceedingly complex due to the concurrent goals and interrelated constraints that must be relaxed. To this end, this paper puts forward an innovative new optimal capacity planning method for a first-of-its-kind stand-alone multiple energy carrier microgrid (MECM) serving the electricity, hot water, and transportation fuel demands of remote communities. The proposed off-grid MECM system is equipped with solar photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, a hydrogen-based energy storage system—including an electrolyser, a hydrogen reservoir, and a fuel cell—a... Keywords: frequency estimation, frequency locked loops, microgrids, resonant filters
This paper introduces a new strategy of frequency estimation for grid-tied and stand-alone mode AC/DC power converters. Frequency stabilization is required, especially when operating in stand-alone mode with a Droop Control strategy, or in hybrid mode with a Diesel generator. It is also required to reduce or increase power output along with grid frequency changes. The novel strategy utilizes a resonant filter to estimate the frequency of the voltage grid and is referenced as a resonant-frequency-estimator (RFE). A mathematical background is presented for the proposed estimator and its performance is evaluated. It is compared with three common frequency estimation algorithms: SRF-FLL, DDSRF-FLL, and DSOGI-FLL. Results are presented for three cases: frequency swing, harmonics injection, and type B short-circuit. Results are analyzed and the conclusion shows that the proposed novel strategy has comparable parameters to commonly used frequency estimation algorithms while having a loopless... [more]
