An Integrated Single-Valued Neutrosophic Combined Compromise Solution Methodology for Renewable Energy Resource Selection Problem
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: CoCoSo, MCDM, renewable energy source selection, single-valued neutrosophic set, SWARA
Optimal renewable energy source (RES) selection needs a strategic decision for reducing environmental pollutions, use of conventional resources, and improving economic development. In the process of RESs evaluation, several aspects like environmental, economic, social, and technical requirements play an important role. In addition, diverse factors affect the appropriate RES selection problem which adheres to uncertain and imprecise data. Thus, this selection process can be considered as a complex uncertain multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem. This study aims to introduce a novel integrated methodology based on Step-wise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis (SWARA) and Combined Compromise Solution (CoCoSo) methods within single-valued neutrosophic sets (SVNSs) context, wherein the decision-makers and criteria weights are completely unknown. In the proposed approach, the criteria weights are determined by the SWARA method, and the most suitable RES alternative is determined by an i... [more]

Shielded Capacitive Power Transfer (S-CPT) without Secondary Side Inductors
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: capacitive, class-E inverter, wireless power transfer
In this study, we propose a four-plate structure with two shielding plates to produce shielded capacitive power transfer (S-CPT) at an operating frequency of 6.78 MHz for a 10 W system. By eliminating the inductors at the secondary side to form an asymmetrical topology, an S-CPT system was developed with a class-E power amplifier. Using MATLAB software, analysis was performed to obtain the parameters in the S-CPT system regarding resonance and impedance matching, and the proposed coupler structure was investigated through electric field simulation. The shield plate voltage stability was also investigated by analysing both the simulation and hardware experiment results. A prototype of S-CPT was established to validate the analysis results and to demonstrate the voltage at the shield plate of the proposed coupler structure. The experimental results are in good agreement with the simulation results. The proposed S-CPT exhibits an AC−AC efficiency of 84%, with a 56% voltage ground stabilit... [more]

A Comprehensive Survey on Different Control Strategies and Applications of Active Power Filters for Power Quality Improvement
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active power filters, current controlling techniques, custom power devices, harmonics, power quality
Power quality (PQ) has become an important topic in today’s power system scenario. PQ issues are raised not only in normal three-phase systems but also with the incorporation of different distributed generations (DGs), including renewable energy sources, storage systems, and other systems like diesel generators, fuel cells, etc. The prevalence of these issues comes from the non-linear features and rapid changing of power electronics devices, such as switch-mode converters for adjustable speed drives and diode or thyristor rectifiers. The wide use of these fast switching devices in the utility system leads to an increase in disturbances associated with harmonics and reactive power. The occurrence of PQ disturbances in turn creates several unwanted effects on the utility system. Therefore, many researchers are working on the enhancement of PQ using different custom power devices (CPDs). In this work, the authors highlight the significance of the PQ in the utility network, its effect, and... [more]

Hydraulic Conductivity of Rock Masses Surrounding Water Curtain Boreholes for Underground Oil Storage Caverns
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: hydraulic conductivity, underground storage cavern, water curtain borehole, water injection test
The assessment of the groundwater flow rate around the cavern periphery is a critical requirement for the design of underground water-sealed oil storage caverns and commonly made through seepage analysis, where a reasonable estimation of the hydraulic conductivity of the host rock is the key issue. However, it is a challenge to accurately determine the hydraulic conductivity of natural rock masses owing to their heterogeneous and anisotropic nature. The underground storage cavern project has a unique favorable condition in that there is a water curtain system that can provide considerable hydraulic test data for inferring hydraulic parameters; however, no well-established method has ever been proposed to exploit these data for characterizing heterogeneity in hydraulic conductivity. This study presents a new approach to evaluate the spatial variation of hydraulic conductivity using water curtain borehole data. This approach treats the peripheral region of each borehole as a homogenous u... [more]

Taxation of Assets Used to Generate Energy—In the Context of the Transformation of the Polish Energy Sector from Coal Energy to Low-Emission Energy
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: property tax, real estate tax, renewable energy source in Poland, taxation
(1) Background—The aim of this paper was to indicate whether the taxation of facilities related to renewable or low-emission energy differed significantly from that of facilities generating electricity from coal. (2) Methods—The research was conducted using a descriptive method, and because of the legal nature of the article, a crucial role was played by the dogmatic method. (3) Results—The thesis according to which only the “construction part” is subject to the property tax is the result of many years of disputes between the taxpayers and the tax authorities. In practice, it is difficult to compare the tax burden on assets related to coal and low-emission power generation because of the construction of the tax base in Polish property tax law. Most often, however, the tax burden on assets, which is calculated in the context of the amount of energy produced, tends to favour coal-fired power generation. (4) Conclusion: The property tax regulations in Poland treat the assets used for ener... [more]

A Material Model for the Orthotropic and Viscous Behavior of Separators in Lithium-Ion Batteries under High Mechanical Loads
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: crashworthiness, elasto-plasticity, finite element model, material model, orthotropy, polyethylene separator, safety, visco-elasticity, visco-plasticity
The present study is focused on the development of a material model where the orthotropic-visco-elastic and orthotropic-visco-plastic mechanical behavior of a polymeric material is considered. The increasing need to reduce the climate-damaging exhaust gases in the automotive industry leads to an increasing usage of electric powered drive systems using Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. For the safety and crashworthiness investigations, a deeper understanding of the mechanical behavior under high and dynamic loads is needed. In order to prevent internal short circuits and thermal runaways within a Li-ion battery, the separator plays a crucial role. Based on results of material tests, a novel material model for finite element analysis (FEA) is developed using the explicit solver Altair Radioss. Based on this model, the visco-elastic-orthotropic, as well as the visco-plastic-orthotropic, behavior until failure can be modeled. Finally, a FE simulation model of the separator material is perfor... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 1T MoS2, CO2 reduction, hydrogen evolution reactions (HER), lithium-ion batteries, metallic MoS2, molybdenum disulfide, MoS2 energy applications, MoS2 energy applications, sodium-ion batteries, solar cells
Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) that has exceptional electronic, magnetic, optical, and mechanical properties. It can be semiconducting, superconducting, or an insulator according to its polymorph. Its bandgap structure changes from indirect to direct when moving towards its nanostructures, which opens a door to bandgap engineering for MoS2. Its supercapacitive and catalytic activity was recently noticed and studied, in order to include this material in a wide range of energy applications. In this work, we present MoS2 as a future material for energy storage and generation applications, especially solar cells, which are a cornerstone for a clean and abundant source of energy. Its role in water splitting reactions can be utilized for energy generation (hydrogen evolution) and water treatment at the same time. Although MoS2 seems to be a breakthrough in the energy field, it still faces some challenges regarding its structure stability, pro... [more]

High-Speed Infrared Measurement of Injector Tip Temperature during Diesel Engine Operation
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: engine load, fuel evaporation, idling, mid-wave infrared (MWIR)
Pre-catalyst engine emissions and detrimental injector deposits have been widely associated with the near-nozzle fluid dynamics during and after the injection events. Although the heating and evaporation of fuel films on the nozzle surface directly affects some of these processes, there are no experimental data for the transient evolution of nozzle surface temperature during typical engine conditions. In order to address this gap in knowledge, we present a non-intrusive approach for the full-cycle time resolved measurement of the surface temperature of production nozzles in an optical engine. A mid-wave infrared high-speed camera was calibrated against controlled conditions, both out of engine and in-engine to account for non-ideal in surface emissivity and optical transmissivity. A custom-modified injector with a thermocouple embedded below the nozzle surface was used to validate the approach under running engine conditions. Calibrated infrared thermography was then applied to charact... [more]

Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: food-energy-water nexus, green-blue infrastructure, small scale urban system, tradeoff
Small scale urban green-blue infrastructure (indicated as GBI hereafter) comprises huge underexploited areas for urban development and planning. This review article aims to highlight the relevance and knowledge gaps regarding GBI from the perspective of the food−energy−water (FEW) nexus, these being key resources for the survival of human communities. In particular, this review was focused on publications on urban ecosystem services (positive effects) and dis-services (negative effects) associated with different GBI typologies. The review proved that GBI can contribute environmentally, socially, and economically to FEW security and urban sustainability. Yet, such positive effects must be considered against ecosystem dis-services tradeoffs, including urban food production, commonly connected with heavy water and energy consumption, specifically under dry climate conditions, and sometimes related to an excessive use of manure, pesticides, or fertilizers. These conditions could pose eithe... [more]

Towards Sustainable Development Goal 7 “Universal Access to Clean Modern Energy”: National Strategy in Rwanda to Scale Clean Cooking with Bottled Gas
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: adoption, LPG, master plan, modern cooking, Rwanda, SDG7
More than 90% of Rwandans rely on polluting solid fuels to meet their cooking needs. The negative impacts on health, climate, and the environment have led the Rwandan government to set a target of halving that number to 42% by 2024. A National Master Plan to promote scale up of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been developed to define (i) the necessary market conditions, (ii) public and private sector interventions, and (iii) the expected societal impacts. Findings are reported from modelling scenarios of scaling LPG use towards the 2024 policy target and the 2030 target for “universal access to clean modern energy” (SDG7). Household LPG use is projected to increase from 5.6% in 2020 to 13.2% by 2024 and 38.5% by 2030. This level of adoption could result in a reduction of 7656 premature deaths and 403,664 disability-adjusted-life-years (DALYs), as well as 243 million trees saved. Dynamics Analysis Using Koopman Mode Decomposition of a Microgrid Including Virtual Synchronous Generator-Based Inverters
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: data driven analysis, frequency characteristics, Koopman mode, microgrid, nonlinearity, virtual synchronous generator
In the field of microgrids (MGs), steady-state power imbalances and frequency/voltage fluctuations in the transient state have been gaining prominence owing to the advancing distributed energy resources (DERs) connected to MGs via grid-connected inverters. Because a stable, safe power supply and demand must be maintained, accurate analyses of power system dynamics are crucial. However, the natural frequency components present in the dynamics make analyses complex. The nonlinearity and confidentiality of grid-connected inverters also hinder controllability. The MG considered in this study consisted of a synchronous generator (the main power source) and multiple grid-connected inverters with storage batteries and virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control. Although smart inverter controls such as VSG contribute to system stabilization, they induce system nonlinearity. Therefore, Koopman mode decomposition (KMD) was utilized in this study for consideration as a future method of data-driv... [more]

Microscale Evaluation of Tight Oil Mobility: Insights from Pore Network Simulation
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: mobility, pore network model, relative permeability, shale oil
Pore network modeling based on digital rock is employed to evaluate the mobility of shale oil in Qingshankou Formation, Songliao Basin, China. Computerized tomography technology is adopted in this work to reconstruct the digital rock of shale core. The pore network model is generated based on the computerized tomography data. We simulate the dynamics of fluid flow in a pore network model to evaluate the mobility of fluid in shale formation. The results show that the relative permeability of oil phase increases slowly in the initial stage of the displacement process, which is mainly caused by the poor continuity of the oil phase. In the later stages, with the increase in the oil phase continuity, the range of relative permeability increases. With the increase of organic matter content, the permeability of the water phase remains unchanged at low water saturation, but gradually increases at high water saturation. At the same time, it can be seen that, with the increase in organic matter... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: floating offshore wind turbine, offshore wind farm, wind turbine modeling
Floating offshore wind has received more attention due to its advantage of access to incredible wind resources over deep waters. Modeling of floating offshore wind farms is essential to evaluate their impacts on the electric power system, in which the floating offshore wind turbine should be adequately modeled for real-time simulation studies. This study proposes a simplified floating offshore wind turbine model, which is applicable for the real-time simulation of large-scale floating offshore wind farms. Two types of floating wind turbines are evaluated in this paper: the semi-submersible and spar-buoy floating wind turbines. The effectiveness of the simplified turbine models is shown by a comparison study with the detailed FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) floating turbine model. A large-scale floating offshore wind farm including eighty units of simplified turbines is tested in parallel simulation and real-time software (OPAL-RT). The wake effects among turbin... [more]

Keywords: consumer behaviour, energy system model, energy system transformation, societal acceptance, sustainable energy system, technology adoption and use
Many countries worldwide have adopted policies to support the expansion of renewable energy sources aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, combating climate change, and, more generally, establishing a globally sustainable energy system. As a result, energy systems around the world are undergoing a process of fundamental change and transformation that goes far beyond the technological dimension. While energy system models have been developed and used for several decades to support decision makers in governments and companies, these models usually focus on the techno-economic dimension, whereas they fall short in addressing and considering behavioural and societal aspects of decisions related to technology acceptance, adoption, and use. In fact, it is often the societal dimension that comes with the greatest challenges and barriers when it comes to making such a socio-technical transformation happen in reality. This paper therefore provides an overview of state-of-the-art energy sys... [more]

March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dewatering optimisation, finite difference method, flow model, groundwater, hydrogeological forecast, water recirculation
The layout of the dewatering system in open-cast mining must be adapted to mining assumptions and to the size of expected inflows, which, in turn, depend on natural conditions and the operation of other mines and groundwater intakes, affecting the arrangement of the hydrodynamic field. This case study analyses possible dewatering solutions related to a change in the mining drainage system: decommissioning by flooding of a depleted deposit and dewatering of a new one located in the vicinity. As part of numerical modelling, a solution was sought to minimise the environmental impact of drainage. Forecast calculations for two drainage alternatives were made. One of the solutions follows the classic approach: independent dewatering of the new excavation. The second solution assumes the recirculation of waters from dewatering of the new mine through their discharge into a closed and flooded pit located in the vicinity. The results of the forecasts for both variants point to the modification... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: clay brick, life-cycle assessment, Sustainability, waste management
The brick industry is currently facing a shortage of natural resources. Despite this, the demand for construction bricks is progressively increasing. Alternative materials, such as dredged sediments and solid organic waste, have been recently proposed as options to replace natural clay in brick manufacturing. Potential exploitation of dredged sediments in clay bricks is evaluated in this study. The chemical composition of the mixtures and the opto-thermal properties of brick samples, which differed for the dredged sediment content (from 10% to 50% of the clay weight), were investigated. Chemical analyses detected lower concentrations of heavy metals in bricks incorporating dredged sediments (DS). Negligible variations in thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and specific heat were observed by increasing the amount of DS in the mixture. In particular, the thermal conductivity values ranged between 0.45 ± 0.03 W m−1 K−1 (DS-50) and 0.50 ± 0.03 W m−1 K−1 (DS-30). Conversely, the colo... [more]
