Keywords: bacteria inhibition, Chlorella vulgaris, co-culture, lipid accumulation, wastewater treatment
Algae biorefinery is gaining much attention for the sustainable production of value-added products (e.g., biofuels, protein supplements etc.) globally. The current study aimed to investigate the relationship between lipid production and bacteria growth by an initial microalgae Chlorella vulgaris density culture in seafood wastewater effluent (SWE). According to our results, the initial C. vulgaris concentration in SWE influenced lipid accumulation. The concentration ranged from 25−35 mg·L−1 which corresponds to SWE’s chemical oxygen demand concentration of 365.67 ± 3.45 mg·L−1. A higher microalgae growth rate and lipid content of 32.15 ± 1.45% was successfully attained. A higher lipid content, approximately double, was observed when compared to the control (16.8 ± 0.5%). Moreover, this study demonstrates that bacteria inhibited microalgae growth as the initial cell density stepped over 35 mg·L−1, which also affected lipid accumulation. This study shows an optimal lipid accumulation att... [more]

Keywords: artificial neural networks, economic feasibility, net present value, sensitivity analysis, wind power
Wind power has grown popular in past recent years due to environmental issues and the search for alternative energy sources. Thus, the viability for wind power generation projects must be studied in order to attend to the environmental concerns and still be attractive and profitable. Therefore, this article aims to perform a sensitive analysis in order to identify the variables that influence most in the viability of a wind power investment for small size companies in the Brazilian northeast. For this, a stochastic analysis of viability through Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) will be made and afterwards, Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) models will be applied for the most relevant variables identification. Through the sensitivity, it appears that the most relevant factors in the analysis are the speed of wind, energy tariff and the investment amount. Thus, the viability of the investment is straightly tied to the region where the wind turbine is installed, and the government incentives ma... [more]

Keywords: combustion, diesel ignited gas engine, dual-fuel engine, excess air ratio, heat release, pilot fuel injection pressure, pilot fuel mass, start of injection
Modern research in the area of internal combustion engines is focused on researching and investigating the technologies that will improve fuel efficiency and decrease emissions. Application of dual-fuel engines is considered as a potential solution to these problems. In the dual-fuel engine, a natural gas-air mixture is ignited by a small amount of the diesel fuel directly injected into a combustion chamber. Pilot fuel injection parameters can strongly effect the combustion process. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of such fuel-supply parameters as pilot fuel mass, pilot fuel injection pressure, pilot fuel injection timing and excess air ratio on the combustion process. Investigation is based on the data obtained during bench tests conducted with the use of measurement equipment. The dependences of engine characteristics from the fuel supply parameters under review were obtained based on the results of the experimental study. Optimal values for every investigated fuel... March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: finite element analysis, high-voltage, stray capacitance, voltage divider
This work analyzes the effects of the parasitic or stray distributed capacitance to ground in high-voltage environments and assesses the effectiveness of different corrective actions to minimize such effects. To this end, the stray capacitance of a 130 kV RMS high-voltage resistive divider is studied because it can severely influence the behavior of such devices when operating under alternating current or transient conditions. The stray capacitance is calculated by means of three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA) simulations. Different laboratory experiments under direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) supply are conducted to corroborate the theoretical findings, and different possibilities to mitigate stray capacitance effects are analyzed and discussed. The effects of the capacitance are important in applications, such as large electrical machines including transformers, motors, and generators or in high-voltage applications involving voltage dividers, conductors or... March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: engine downsizing, knock, pre-ignition, spark-ignition, turbocharging
Since 2014, Formula 1 engines have been turbocharged spark-ignited engines. In this scenario, the maximum engine power available in full-load conditions can be achieved only by optimizing combustion phasing within the cycle, i.e., by advancing the center of combustion until the limit established by the occurrence of abnormal combustion. High in-cylinder pressure peaks and the possible occurrence of knocking combustion significantly increase the heat transfer to the walls and might generate hot spots inside the combustion chamber. This work presents a methodology suitable to properly diagnose and control the occurrence of pre-ignition events that emanate from hot spots. The methodology is based on a control-oriented model of the ignition delay, which is compared to the actual ignition delay calculated from the real-time processing of the in-cylinder pressure trace. When the measured ignition delay becomes significantly smaller than that modeled, it means that ignition has been activated... [more]

Keywords: 3D numerical simulation, OpenFOAM, pressurizer relief tank, steam dumping process
Simulating the steam dumping process of a pressurized relief tank is a challenging engineering problem, due to the massive computing resource requirements and its complex physical models. This study gave a comprehensive 3D numerical study for the transient dumping process from the PRT (Pressurizer Relief Tank) to the room containing the tank. The physical model, geometry design and meshing strategy, along with the numerical techniques, have been described in detail. Through parallel simulations based on the open source CFD toolbox OpenFOAM, numerical results for the temperature, pressure, and the velocity distribution are presented. The results show that the maximum velocity throughout the whole domain is 967 m/s over Mach 2 and the maximum pressure on the roof of the room is 2.8 atm. It could provide the guidance information for the safety design of the reactor coolant system. Additionally, comparison cases between OpenFOAM and CFX are tested, and it turns out that OpenFOAM could prod... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Clean energy, Lagrange primal-dual, plant location and allocation, risk-averse
A groundswell of opinion in utilizing environmentally friendly energy technologies has been put forth worldwide. In this paper, we consider an energy generation plant distribution and allocation problem under uncertainty to get the utmost out of available developments, as well as to control costs and greenhouse emissions. Different clean and traditional energy technologies are considered in this paper. In particular, we present a risk-averse stochastic mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to minimize the total expected costs and control the risk of CO2 emissions exceeding a certain budget. We employ the conditional value-at-risk (CVaR) model to represent risk preference and risk constraint of emissions. We prove that our risk-averse model can be equivalent to the traditional risk-neutral model under certain conditions. Moreover, we suggest that the risk-averse model can provide solutions generating less CO2 than traditional models. To handle the computational difficulty in unc... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: economic load dispatch problems (ELD), grey wolf optimizer (GWO), local search mechanism, noninferior solution, optimization algorithms
The economic load dispatch (ELD) problem is a complex optimization problem in power systems. The main task for this optimization problem is to minimize the total fuel cost of generators while also meeting the conditional constraints of valve-point loading effects, prohibited operating zones, and nonsmooth cost functions. In this paper, a novel grey wolf optimization (GWO), abbreviated as NGWO, is proposed to solve the ELD problem by introducing an independent local search strategy and a noninferior solution neighborhood independent local search technique to the original GWO algorithm to achieve the best problem solution. A local search strategy is added to the standard GWO algorithm in the NGWO, which is called GWOI, to search the local neighborhood of the global optimal point in depth and to guarantee a better candidate. In addition, a noninferior solution neighborhood independent local search method is introduced into the GWOI algorithm to find a better solution in the noninferior so... [more]

Bicheng Guo, Jiang Guo
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: exponential reaching law, hydraulic turbine governing system, input/output feedback linearization, nonlinear turbine model, sliding mode control
Hydropower as renewable energy has continually expanded at a relatively high rate in the last decade. This expansion calls for more accurate scheme design in hydraulic turbine governing system (HTGS) to ensure its high efficiency. Sliding mode control (SMC) as a robust control method which is insensitive to system uncertainties and disturbances raises interest in the application in HTGS. However, the feature of highly coupled state variables reflects the nonlinear essence of HTGS and SMC studies on the related mathematical model under certain fluctuations are not satisfied. In this regard, a novel SMC design with proportional-integral-derivative manifold is firstly applied to a nonlinear HTGS with a complex conduit system. In dealing with certain fluctuations in speed and load around the rated working condition, the proposed SMC is capable of driving the system to the desired state with smooth and light responses in aspects of the key state variables. The exponential reaching law and i... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: IEC 61850, real-time, smart grid communication, substation automation system, SV and GOOSE application protocols
IEC 61850 is a standard for the design and operation of electrical Substation Automation Systems (SAS) that defines how data may be transferred among Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs). The defined data models can be mapped into application protocols, such as SV or GOOSE, which may run upon high speed Ethernet LANs bridged by IEEE 802.1Q compliant switches. The communication system must cope with the timing requirements associated to protective relaying strategies. Given the time constrained nature of SAS applications, a thorough analysis of its timing behavior is required. In this paper, we propose an analytical model for the timing assessment of SV and GOOSE message exchanges in an IEC 61850 process bus. The proposed model allows the communication timing assessment, by analyzing the response time of each message stream of the SAS. This feature is an advantage for the expansion of the SAS, as it allows the evaluation at design time of the maximum number of IEDs that can be supporte... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: electrical capacity, energy intensity, GDP, gross domestic product, hierarchical cluster analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sustainable development
Climate change and awareness of the need to care for the environment have resulted in a global increase in the interest in renewable energy sources. The European Union (EU) is active in this respect and requires Member States to fulfill specific plans in the transformation of their energy systems. We employed hierarchical cluster analysis in an attempt to distinguish those countries among the new EU Member States that increased their electrical capacity from renewable energy sources to the greatest extent while paying attention to their energy intensity. The analyses were conducted in two scenarios for both 2004 and 2016. The first scenario assumed an analysis of all known renewable energy sources, whereas in the second scenario, only renewable energy sources from wind and solar power plants were included. The division of analyses into these two variants showed the importance of the differences in the energy assessment of individual countries, depending on classification of renewable e... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy hub, game theory, multi-energy hub system, optimal operation strategy, uncertainty
The optimal scheduling of multi-energy hub systems plays an important role in the safety, stability, and economic operation of the system. However, due to the strong uncertainty of renewable energy access, serious coupling, and the interaction among energy hubs of multi-energy hub systems, it is difficult for the traditional optimal scheduling method to solve these problems. Therefore, game theory was used to solve the optimal scheduling problem of multi-energy hub systems. According to the internal connection mode and energy conversion relationship of energy hubs, along with the competitive and cooperative relationship between multi-energy hubs, the game theoretic optimal scheduling model of the multi-energy hub system was established. Then, two cases and 50 groups of wind speed series were used to test the robustness of the proposed method. Simulation results show that the total power injection is −16,805.8, 104.1847, and −865.561 and the natural gas injection is 46,046.81, 27,727.65... [more]
Numerical Simulation of Bubble-Liquid Two-Phase Turbulent Flows in Shallow Bioreactor
Yang Liu, Lixing Zhou, Youngju Zhang
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bubble-liquid two-phase turbulent flows, cell damage, numerical simulation, shallow bubble column bioreactor
An improved second-order moment bubble-liquid two-phase turbulent model is developed to predict the hydrodynamic characteristics of the shallow bioreactor using two height-to-diameter ratios of H/D = 1.4 and H/D = 2.9. The two-phase hydrodynamic parameters, the bubble normal and shear stress, the bubble energy dissipation rate, the bubble turbulent kinetic energy, etc. were numerically simulated. These parameters increased along with flow direction and constituted a threat to cells living at far distance away from the gas jetting inlet regions, rather than a finding of higher cell damage at near the jetting inlet region, as reported by Babosa et al. 2003. A new correlation named the turbulent energy production of bubble-liquid two-phase flow was proposed to successfully verify this experimental observation. A smaller H/D ratio makes more contributions to the generation of lower turbulent energy productions, which are in favor of the alleviation of cell damage. The extremely long and na... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: efficiency enhancement, inductive power transfer, symmetrical half-bridge resonant converter
In order to compensate the large leakage inductance and improve the power transmission capacity, capacitors are widely used in inductive power transfer (IPT) systems, which results in high voltage or current stresses in the resonant tanks and limits higher volt-ampere (VA) rating of the transfer power, especially in medium and low frequency applications. This paper presents a symmetrical half-bridge resonant converter (SHRC) for series-series/series compensated IPT systems with detailed analysis and design. It operates at a relatively low frequency of 12.5 kHz, suitable for IGBT applications. The theoretical analysis shows that, compared with full-bridge resonant converter (FRC) for IPT, the symmetrical half-bridge resonant converter achieves a higher efficiency. Simulation and a prototype of 1500 W power output were built to verify the theoretical analysis. The experimental results show that the power loss of SHRC is 39.7 W while that of FRC is 79.4 W, which is consistent with the the... [more]
Secure Load Frequency Control of Smart Grids under Deception Attack: A Piecewise Delay Approach
Fei Zhao, Jinsha Yuan, Ning Wang, Zhang Zhang, Helong Wen
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: deception attack, load frequency control, multi-area power systems, network communication
The problem of secure load frequency control of smart grids is investigated in this paper. The networked data transmission within the smart grid is corrupted by stochastic deception attacks. First, a unified Load frequency control model is constructed to account for both network-induced effects and deception attacks. Second, with the Lyapunov functional method, a piecewise delay analysis is conducted to study the stability of the established model, which is of less conservativeness. Third, based on the stability analysis, a controller design method is provided in terms of linear matrix inequalities. Finally, a case study is carried out to demonstrate the derived results.
A Comparative Analysis of House Owners in Need of Energy Efficiency Measures but with Different Intentions

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decision-making, energy efficient refurbishment measures, residential buildings, Theory of Planned Behavior
Existing private homes in Germany and throughout Europe often are in need of energy efficient refurbishment measures (EERMs). However, these EERMs are not realized on the required level in order to achieve environment-related political targets. Therefore we investigate, based on an online survey of 1085 German owner-occupiers, the factors that differentiate two groups of single- and two-family house owners in need of EERM. Using an extended version of the Theory of Planned Behavior as a research framework, the performed logistic regression analysis shows that e.g., behavioral beliefs are significant factors for differentiating “Future-Refurbishers” from “Non-Refurbishers”. Based on our results we suggest an enhancement of practice-orientated initiatives, e.g., refurbishment workshops or best-practice presentations. By presenting the aesthetic appearance of refurbished buildings or providing knowledge, other owner-occupiers could be motivated to engage in EERM. In addition to funding pr... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cost–benefit analysis, ratepayer, rooftop PV, Thailand, utility
Driven by falling photovoltaic (PV) installation costs and potential support policies, rooftop PV is expected to expand rapidly in Thailand. As a result, the relevant stakeholders, especially utilities, have concerns about the net economic impacts of high PV adoption. Using a cost−benefit analysis, this study quantifies the net economic impacts of rooftop PV systems on three utilities and on ratepayers in Thailand by applying nine different PV adoption scenarios with various buyback rates and annual percentages of PV cost reduction. Under Thailand’s current electricity tariff structure, Thai utilities are well-protected and able to pass all costs due to PV onto the ratepayers in terms of changes in retail rates. We find that when PV adoption is low, the net economic impacts on both the utilities and retail rates are small and the impacts on each utility depend on its specific characteristics. On the other hand, when PV adoption ranges from 9−14% in energy basis, five-year retail rate i... [more]

Keywords: daily insolation condition, forecast horizon, hybrid forecast model, predictive performance, variability characterization
The tropical insular region is characterized by a large diversity of microclimates and land/sea contrasts, creating a challenging solar forecasting. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and use performant and robustness forecasting techniques. This paper examines the predictive performance of a novel solar forecasting approach, the multiscale hybrid forecast model (MHFM), as a function of several parameters. The MHFM model is a technique recently used for irradiance forecasting based on a hybrid autoregressive (AR) and neural network (NN) model combined with multiscale decomposition methods. This technique presents a relevant performance for 1 h ahead global horizontal irradiance forecast. The goal of this work is to highlight the strength and limits of this model by assessing the influence of different parameters from a metric error analysis. This study illustrates modeling process performance as a function of daily insolation conditions and testifies the influence of learning data a... [more]

Keywords: borehole thermal energy storage, IDA ICE, industrial excess heat, model validation, performance predictions
To generate performance predictions of borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) systems for both seasonal and short-term storage of industrial excess heat, e.g., from high to low production hours, models are needed that can handle the short-term effects. In this study, the first and largest industrial BTES in Sweden, applying intermittent heat injection and extraction down to half-day intervals, was modelled in the IDA ICE 4.8 environment and compared to three years of measured storage performance. The model was then used in a parametric study to investigate the change in performance of the storage from e.g., borehole spacing and storage supply flow characteristics at heat injection. For the three-year comparison, predicted and measured values for total injected and extracted energy differed by less than 1% and 3%, respectively and the mean relative difference for the storage temperatures was 4%, showing that the performance of large-scale BTES with intermittent heat injection and extrac... March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decarbonization, emissions accounting, energy system modeling, marginal costs, multi-energy system, scenario analysis
Hourly emission factors and marginal costs of energy carriers are determined to enable a simplified assessment of decarbonization measures in energy systems. Since the sectors and energy carriers are increasingly coupled in the context of the energy transition, the complexity of balancing emissions increases. Methods of calculating emission factors and marginal energy carrier costs in a multi-energy carrier model were presented and applied. The model used and the input data from a trend scenario for Germany up to the year 2050 were described for this purpose. A linear optimization model representing electricity, district heating, hydrogen, and methane was used. All relevant constraints and modeling assumptions were documented. In this context, an emissions accounting method has been proposed, which allows for determining time-resolved emission factors for different energy carriers in multi-energy systems (MES) while considering the linkages between energy carriers. The results showed t... [more]

The MgO-CO2 working pair has been regarded as prospective for thermochemical energy storage (TCES) due to its relatively high heat storage capacity, low cost, and wide availability. This study is aimed at the optimization of the molar salt content, α, for the MgO modified with the eutectic mixture of LiNO3 and KNO3 (Li0.42K0.58NO3) which was earlier shown to provide high conversion, Δx, in heat-storage/release processes at 300−400 °C. The composites that have different salt content were prepared and carbonation kinetics was investigated under various conditions (carbonation temperature, Tcarb., is 290−360 °C and CO2 pressure, P(CO2), is 50−101 kPa). Significant accelerating effect was revealed at α ≥ 0.05, and the Δx value was maximized at α = 0.10−0.20. The largest conversion of 0.70 was detected at α = 0.10 and Tcarb. = 350 °C that corresponds to the specific useful heat (Qcomp.) is 1.63 MJ/kg-composite. However, the salt content of 0.20 ensures the high conversion, Δx = 0.63−0.67 an... [more]
A Current-to-Voltage DC-DC Converter for Powering Backbone Devices of Scientific Cabled Seafloor Observatories

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cabled seafloor observatories, current-to-voltage, DC-DC converters, duty-cycle-overlap control (DCOC), power supply
In scientific cabled seafloor observatories, branching units and optical repeaters are essential backbone devices, in which zener diodes are commonly used in their power supply circuits. However, the low efficiency of zener-diode-based power feeding modules under large currents makes for a significant threat to the long-term reliability of backbone devices. In this paper, a novel full-bridge DC-DC converter with a duty-cycle-overlap control (DCOC) strategy is proposed to achieve high-efficiency current-to-voltage conversion. The circuit design of the converter and the principle of the DCOC strategy are analyzed. A prototype of the converter is implemented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed power feeding approach for large-scale cabled seafloor observatories.

Keywords: oxygen and carbon-containing groups, Py-GC/MS, pyrolysis, sewage sludge, TG-FTIR
Organic carbon (C) and oxygen (O) contained in sewage sludge strongly impact its thermal behavior during pyrolysis treatment. This study was aimed at getting an insight into the decomposition mechanism of organic compounds containing C and O during sludge pyrolysis using thermo-gravimetric Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) and pyrolysis-gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and helpfully improving energy conversion of sewage sludge. The temperature domains of transformation were determined and indications of the main compounds produced during each stage were obtained. Results showed that the volatile compounds that evolved after sludge pyrolysis were mainly distributed into six groups: alkenes, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, phenols and carboxylic acids. Comparison in thermal behavior and composition of the evolved volatile compounds were observed. In the low temperature stage (<350 °C), compounds containing O−C=O accounted for the highest prop...
