From Carbon Calculators to Energy System Analysis in Cities
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: city, climate change, energy planning, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
Energy systems in cities need to be decarbonized and are becoming more integrated via energy sector coupling. Today, cities often use simple methods to assess their low carbon targets, e.g., carbon calculators, and these methods use annualized carbon reduction potentials. For example, reductions from heat savings in buildings or fuel demand in transport. This is done because it is simple and fast. This paper describes a methodology that goes beyond carbon calculators and assesses highly renewable energy systems. The methodology is carried out for a case city—Sønderborg, Denmark. Using a national 100% renewable energy study and a suitable energy system analysis tool (EnergyPLAN), the method accounts for inter-sector coupling and energy system dynamics. The energy system is assessed by comparing the results from the analysis tool against numerous key sustainability factors for a Smart Energy System. The paper illustrates how the method delivers a sustainable 100% renewable Smart Energy S... [more]

Practicalities and Driving Dynamics of a Real Driving Emissions (RDE) Euro 6 Regulation Homologation Test
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: driving dynamics, euro emissions standards, European regulations, real driving emissions
One of the most important sources of air pollution, especially in urban areas, is the exhaust emissions from passenger cars. New European emissions regulations, to minimize the gap between manufacturer-reported emissions and those emitted on the road, require new vehicles to undergo emission testing on public roads during the certification process. Outlined in the new regulation are specific boundary conditions to which the route on which the vehicle is driven must comply during a legal test. These boundary conditions, as they relate to the design and subsequent driving of a compliant route, are discussed in detail. The practicality of designing a compliant route is discussed in the context of developing a route on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, in a prescriptive manner. The route itself was driven 5 times and the results compared against regulation boundary conditions.

Nonlinear Synchronous Control for H-Type Gantry Stage Used in Electric Vehicles Manufacturing
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive robust control, electric vehicles, H-type gantry stage, linear motor, synchronous control
The H-type gantry stage (HGS) is widely used in electric vehicle manufacturing and other fields. However, resulting from the existence of mechanical coupling, the synchronous control problem of HGS always troubles many engineers. Most synchronization schemes were either engaged in improving each motor’s tracking performance or committed to pure motion synchronization only. However, tracking and synchronous performance are interconnected, because of the mechanical coupling. In this paper, a rigid assumed system model of HGS, concerning the effects of mid-beam rotary inertia, mid-beam stiffness, and end-effector movement, is presented. Based on the proposed model, an adaptive robust synchronous control based on a rigid assumed model (ARSCR) is proposed to improve both synchronous and tracking performance of the HGS. From the Lyapunov analysis, the proposed ARSCR can achieve the convergence of synchronous error and tracking error, simultaneously. An HGS driven by dual linear motors is bui... [more]

Influence of DC Electric Fields on Pollution of HVDC Composite Insulator Short Samples with Different Environmental Parameters
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: contamination, electric field, HVDC composite insulators, particles motion process, pollution ratio k
Pollution-induced flashover is a serious threat to the safe operation of power systems. With the development of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC), it is necessary to study insulator contamination in DC electric fields. In this paper, the energized wind tunnel contamination test was conducted in order to systematically study the pollution ratio, k (ratio of non-soluble deposit density (NSDD) of a DC-energized condition to a non-energized condition), under different environmental parameters. Later, a two-dimensional contamination model of short samples of an HVDC composite insulator was established. The particle motion characteristics under different environmental parameters were then analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). The research results showed that—the DC electric field had an influence on particle motion but in different environments, the degree of influence was different. In addition, k was found to largely vary, with a variation in the environmental parameters. When the... [more]

OpenHPL for Modelling the Trollheim Hydropower Plant
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: hydropower, modelica library, Modelling
An increase of tightly integrated, renewable energy sources with highly varying production leads to a greater need for flexible hydropower plants to “balance” the intermittent production from these sources. From a systems perspective, the intermittency aspect constitutes a disturbance, while the tight integration leads to a multivariable systems, both of which causes increased challenges for good control. This instigates the need for a model based analysis and synthesis tool which can describe dynamic phenomena, supports multiphysics problems, and allows for immediate use in advanced control analysis and design. Previously, an open source Hydro Power Library (OpenHPL) have been developed within the multiphysics Modelica eco-system which satisfies the above requirements: OpenHPL contains a set of model units relevant for hydropower systems, as well as examples of tools for analysis of these models for control purposes. Thus far, OpenHPL has been validated by comparison against other sim... [more]

Accumulation Behaviors of Different Particles and Effects on the Breakdown Properties of Mineral Oil under DC Voltage
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: accumulation behavior, breakdown voltage, DC voltage, different particles, mineral oil
Particles in transformer oil are harmful to the operation of transformers, which can lead to the occurrence of partial discharge and even breakdown. More and more researchers are becoming interested in investigating the effects of particles on the performance of insulation oil. In this paper, a simulation method is provided to explore the motion mechanism and accumulation characteristics of different particles. This is utilized to explain the effects of particle properties on the breakdown strength of mineral oil. Experiments on particle accumulation under DC voltage as well as DC breakdown were carried out. The simulation results are in agreement with the experimental results. Having a DC electrical field with a sufficient accumulation time and initial concentration are advantageous for particle accumulation. Properties of impurities determine the bridge shape, conductivity characteristics, and variation law of DC breakdown voltages. Metal particles and mixed particles play more signi... [more]

The Application of Building Physics in the Design of Roof Windows
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: building component development, passive building, roof window, thermal performance
This paper deals with a small but important component in a building envelope, namely roof windows in pitched roofs. Building physics methods were used to support the search for new solutions which correspond to the maximum extent for requirements for passive house level design. The first part of the paper summarizes the key phenomena of heat transfer, mainly based on a comparison of vertical windows in walls. The results of repeated two-dimensional heat transfer calculations in the form of parametric studies are presented in order to express the most important factors influencing thermal transmittance and minimum surface temperatures. Several configuration variants suitable for technical design are discussed. It was found that a combination of wood and hardened plastics in the window frame and sash is the preferred solution. The resulting thermal transmittance can be up to twice as low as usual (from 0.7 down to 0.5 W/(m2·K), with further development ongoing. Surface temperature requir... [more]

Alkaline Mineral Soil Amendment: A Climate Change ‘Stabilization Wedge’?
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: alkaline minerals, carbon sequestration, climate change mitigation, enhanced weathering, soil amendment, stabilization wedge
Extreme climate change due to heat-trapping gases, especially carbon dioxide, necessitates its mitigation. In this context, the carbon dioxide sequestration technology of enhanced weathering has for years been investigated, with a possible implementation strategy via alkaline mineral soil amendment being more recently proposed. Candidate materials for enhanced weathering include calcium and magnesium silicates, most notably those belonging to the olivine, pyroxene and serpentine groups of minerals, given their reactivity with CO2 and global availability. When these finely crushed silicate rocks are applied to the soil, the alkaline earth metal cations released during mineral weathering gradually react with carbonate anions and results in the formation of pedogenic carbonates, which, over time, and under the right conditions, can accumulate in the soil. This review paper critically reviews the available literature on alkaline mineral soil amendments and its potential to sequester enough... [more]

The Effects of Environmental Regulations on the Manufacturing Industry’s Performance: A Comparison of Green and Non-Green Sectors in Korea
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: act on low-carbon green growth, employment, environmental regulations, Korea, labor productivity, manufacturing
This study examines the effects of strengthened environmental regulations on employment and labor productivity in the Korean manufacturing industry using panel data from 2004 to 2015. It divides the industry into environmental (green and non-green) and carbon dioxide emitting (polluting and non-polluting) sectors to investigate the industrial sector’s response heterogeneity to tightened regulations. We draw several conclusions on the basis of our empirical results. Firstly, environmental policies measured by enacting the LCGG (Low-carbon green growth) Act led to negative effects on labor productivity and employment in polluting industries. These negative effects show that the polluting industries take a higher cost burden because of the environmental policies as compared to the less-polluting industries; this finding is in line with previous studies in literature. Secondly, the green sector is experiencing higher labor productivity and employment as compared to the non-green sector aft... [more]

Performance Simulation and Benefit Analysis of Ammonia Absorption Cooling and Heating Dual-Supply System Based on Off-Peak Electricity Heat Storage
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy conservation, Energy Storage, off-peak electricity, performance simulation
The energy consumption of urban central heating in northern China is two to four times that in northern Europe and other countries. Beijing has adopted measures, such as ‘coal to gas’ and ‘coal to electricity’, to reduce environmental pollution caused by central heating. Given a peak-to-valley difference in the electricity supply of power plant, which is uneven day and night, this study proposes to store the night-time off-peak electricity in the form of heat energy and drive the ammonia absorption system in the form of steam or hot water during peak or flat electricity. Simulation results of ammonia absorption cooling and heating dual-supply system show that heat source temperature increases, evaporation temperature increases, and cooling water temperature decreases are all beneficial to improve the refrigeration coefficient in the summer cooling condition. In the meantime, heat source temperature increases, evaporation temperature increases, and cooling water temperature decreases ar... [more]

Nature-Inspired Whale Optimization Algorithm for Optimal Coordination of Directional Overcurrent Relays in Power Systems
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: directional overcurrent relay coordination (DOCR), heuristic algorithm, plug setting (PS), time dial setting (TDS), whale optimization algorithm (WOA)
In power systems protection, the optimal coordination of directional overcurrent relays (DOCRs) is of paramount importance. The coordination of DOCRs in a multi-loop power system is formulated as an optimization problem. The main objective of this paper is to develop the whale optimization algorithm (WOA) for the optimal coordination of DOCRs and minimize the sum of the operating times of all primary relays. The WOA is inspired by the bubble-net hunting strategy of humpback whales which leads toward global minima. The proposed algorithm has been applied to six IEEE test systems including the IEEE three-bus, eight-bus, nine-bus, 14-bus, 15-bus, and 30-bus test systems. Furthermore, the results obtained using the proposed WOA are compared with those obtained by other up-to-date algorithms. The obtained results show the effectiveness of the proposed WOA to minimize the relay operating time for the optimal coordination of DOCRs.

Predictive-Fixed Switching Current Control Strategy Applied to Six-Phase Induction Machine
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fixed switching frequency, Model Predictive Control, multiphase induction machine
In applications such as multiphase motor drives, classical predictive control strategies are characterized by a variable switching frequency which adds high harmonic content and ripple in the stator currents. This paper proposes a model predictive current control adding a modulation stage based on a switching pattern with the aim of generating a fixed switching frequency. Hence, the proposed controller takes into account the prediction of the two adjacent active vectors and null vector in the ( α - β ) frame defined by space vector modulation in order to reduce the (x-y) currents according to a defined cost function at each sampling period. Both simulation and experimental tests for a six-phase induction motor drive are provided and compared to the classical predictive control to validate the feasibility of the proposed control strategy.

Sizing and Siting of Distributed Generators and Energy Storage in a Microgrid Considering Plug-in Electric Vehicles
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed generator, economic power dispatch, electric vehicle, energy management, Energy Storage, sizing and siting
This paper presents a sizing and siting model for distributed generators (DGs) and energy storage systems (ESS) towards the design of a cost-efficient and reliable microgrid considering electric vehicles (EVs). The proposed model exploits the coordinated energy dispatching of DGs, ESS, and EVs, aiming at minimizing the overall planning and operating cost as well as meeting power supply reliability requirements. This issue is addressed in a two-stage framework. The upper stage determines the sizes and sites of candidate DGs and ESS, and the lower stage optimizes the microgrid’s economic power dispatch. Since the two-stage model contains both planning and operational variables, a two-stage iterative heuristic algorithm is designed. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated by case studies, and corresponding results demonstrate that the planning approach that considers coordinated management of an EV fleet and economic power dispatch of microgrid achieves better economics. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, gasoline engine, Wankel engine, workflow simulation
This paper deals with the creation of modern high-performance aircraft power units based on the Wankel rotary piston engine. One of the main problems of Wankel engines is high specific fuel consumption. This paper solves the problem of improving the efficiency of this type of engine. The mathematical model of non-stationary processes of transfer of momentum, energy, mass, and the concentration of reacting substances in the estimated volume provides for the determination of local gas parameters in the entire computational region, which are presented as a sum of averaged and pulsation components. The k-ζ-f model is used as the turbulence model; the combustion is described by the coherent flame model (CFM) based on the concept of laminar flame propagation. As a result of the calculation, we obtained the values of temperature, pressure, and velocity of the working fluid in the working chamber cross-sections of a rotary−piston engine. Real-Time Energy Management of a Microgrid Using Deep Reinforcement Learning
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: deep reinforcement learning, energy management system, microgrids, model-free, neural network
Driven by the recent advances and applications of smart-grid technologies, our electric power grid is undergoing radical modernization. Microgrid (MG) plays an important role in the course of modernization by providing a flexible way to integrate distributed renewable energy resources (RES) into the power grid. However, distributed RES, such as solar and wind, can be highly intermittent and stochastic. These uncertain resources combined with load demand result in random variations in both the supply and the demand sides, which make it difficult to effectively operate a MG. Focusing on this problem, this paper proposed a novel energy management approach for real-time scheduling of an MG considering the uncertainty of the load demand, renewable energy, and electricity price. Unlike the conventional model-based approaches requiring a predictor to estimate the uncertainty, the proposed solution is learning-based and does not require an explicit model of the uncertainty. Specifically, the M... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: fault ride-through, interval type-2 fuzzy logic system, permanent magnet synchronous generator, wind energy conversion
Recently, wind energy conversion systems in renewable energy sources have attracted attention due to their effective application. Wind turbine systems have a complex structure; however, traditional control systems are inadequate in answering the demands of complex systems. Therefore, expert control systems are applied to wind turbines, such as type-1 and interval type-2 fuzzy logic control (IT-2 FLC) systems. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery management system, cell balancing circuit, charge equalizer, lithium-ion battery
In this work, a new active balancing circuit is proposed. This circuit consists of a cell-access network and an energy-transfer network. The cell-access network requires 2n + 6 switches, where n is the number of cells, and creates an energy-transfer path between unbalanced cells and the energy-transfer network. The energy-transfer network has double energy carriers and simultaneously implements cell-to-pack and pack-to-cell balancing operations without overlapping. As a result, a high power rate and fast balancing operation can be achieved by using two energy carriers in a single balancing circuit. The prototype of a proposed balancing circuit was built for six cells and then tested under various conditions; all cells in the state of charge (SOC) region of 70% to 80% were equalized after 93 min, and one charging/discharging period in the SOC region of 10% to 90% was increased by 8.58% compared to the non-balancing operation. March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Busbar, Mathematical model, Temperature distribution, Thermal modelling and simulation
Copper busbar technology is widely used with the aim to achieve electrical connections with power distribution systems because of their flexibility and compactness. The thermal analysis takes into account the heat conduction and convection of a copper busbar system used to supply a test bench with high currents in order to check the electro-thermal behaviour of power circuit breakers during overload and short circuit conditions. This paper proposes a mathematical model for busbars used within a high current power supply. The obtained thermal model can be used to analyse the thermal behaviour of busbars in steady-state conditions at different values of the electric current, cross-section and length of the busbar. Also, the mathematical model allows to calculate the temperature distribution along the busbar at different values of the contact resistances at junction points with other conductors. There is a good correlation between calculated, simulated and experimental results.

Keywords: biodiesel, bioethanol, CO and NOx emissions, diesel engine, engine performances, exhaust gases opacity, farm tractor, kinematic viscosity, response surface method
The effect of biofuel blends on the engine performance and emissions of agricultural machines can be extremely complex to predict even if the properties and the effects of the pure substances in the blends can be sourced from the literature. Indeed, on the one hand, internal combustion engines (ICEs) have a high intrinsic operational complexity; on the other hand, biofuels show antithetic effects on engine performance and present positive or negative interactions that are difficult to determine a priori. Hybrid Model for Determining Dual String Gas Lift Split Factor in Oil Producers
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: dual string completion, gas lift, gas lift optimization, gas lift rate, gas robbing, split factor
Upstream oil production using dual string completion, i.e., two tubing inside a well casing, is common due to its cost advantage. High pressure gas is employed to lift the oil to the surface when there is insufficient reservoir energy to overcome the liquids static head in the tubing. However, gas lifting for this type of completion can be complicated. This is due to the operating condition where total gas is injected into the common annulus and then allowed to be distributed among the two strings without any surface control. High uncertainties often result from the methods used to determine the split factor—the ratio between the gas lift rate to one string over the total gas injected. A hybrid model which combined three platforms: the Visual Basics for Application programme, PROSPER (a nodal analysis tool) and Excel spreadsheet, is proposed for the estimation of the split factor.
