Steady State Modeling and Performance Analysis of a Wind Turbine-Based Doubly Fed Induction Generator System with Rotor Control
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: doubly fed induction generator, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, rotor control, steady state model, wind turbine
The utilization of renewable energy sources aids in the economic development of a country. Among the various renewable energy sources, wind energy is more effective for electricity production. The doubly fed induction generator is an extensively known wind turbine generator for its partially rated power converters and dynamic performance. The doubly fed induction generator assists the wind turbine to function with a wide speed range. Hence, the steady-state performance analysis of a doubly fed induction generator helps enable it to operate efficiently at a specific wind turbine speed. In this paper, a 2 MW variable speed pitch regulated doubly fed induction generator with a speed range of 900—2000 rpm was opted for steady-state analysis. This was followed by the design and modelling of a doubly fed induction generator in Matlab/Simulink environment, and the analyses were performed using mathematical equations computed via Matlab coding. The steady-state magnitudes were calculated with... [more]

Application of the Time-Domain Signal Analysis for Electrical Appliances Identification in the Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: electrical appliances, load disaggregation, NILM, non-intrusive load monitoring, smart grid, smart metering
The paper presents a novel method for non-intrusive appliances identification. It can be used for energy load disaggregation in a smart grid. The approach identifies changes in the state of the particular appliance by measuring and processing the common supply current signal. Analysis of the instantaneous changes in the aggregated current on the output of the analyzed circuit in the power network is exploited here. The signal is processed using the time alignment of the current and voltage signals samples represented in the array form. The scheme includes filtering, event detection and identification, which is performed by comparing parameters of the detected event against previously determined signatures of monitored appliances. The analysis is performed in the time domain; therefore (unlike other existing methods), the information contained in the original signal is not lost. The approach was tested in the laboratory designed specifically for this purpose. All tests have been conduct... [more]

Minimum Emissions Configuration of a Green Energy−Steel System: An Analytical Model
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: analytical model, green hydrogen, green steel, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The need to significantly reduce emissions from the steelmaking sector requires effective and ready-to-use technical solutions. With this aim, different decarbonization strategies have been investigated by both researchers and practitioners. To this concern, the most promising pathway is represented by the replacement of natural gas with pure hydrogen in the direct reduced iron (DRI) production process to feed an electric arc furnace (EAF). This solution allows to significantly reduce direct emissions of carbon dioxide from the DRI process but requires a significant amount of electricity to power electrolyzers adopted to produce hydrogen. The adoption of renewable electricity sources (green hydrogen) would reduce emissions by 95−100% compared to the blast furnace−basic oxygen furnace (BF−BOF) route. In this work, an analytical model for the identification of the minimum emission configuration of a green energy−steel system consisting of a secondary route supported by a DRI production p... [more]

Ready for the Road? A Socio-Technical Investigation of Fire Safety Improvement Options for Lithium-Ion Traction Batteries
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: battery safety, development pathways, electrical vehicles, policy, rapid prototyping, socio-technical system, stakeholders
Battery technology is crucial in the transition towards electric mobility. Lithium-ion batteries are conquering the market but are facing fire safety risks that might threaten further applications. In this study, we address the problem and potential solutions for traction batteries in the European Union area. We do so by taking a unique socio-technical system perspective. Therefore, a novel, mixed-method approach is applied, combining literature review; stakeholder interviews; Failure Mode, Mechanisms, and Event Analysis (FMMEA); and rapid prototyping. Our findings confirm that fire safety is an upcoming concern. Still, most stakeholders lack a full understanding of the problem. Improving safety is a shared responsibility among supply chain and societal stakeholders. For automotive applications, voluntary standard-setting on safety risks is an appropriate tool to improve fire safety, whereas for niche applications, a top-down approach setting regulations seems more suited. Assessment of the Economic Efficiency of Energy Development in the Industrial Sector of the European Union Area Countries
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: clustering, economic efficiency, energy development, industrial sector
The European Union’s Green Deal emphasises the importance of improving the efficiency of the energy sector in its countries, which is why the issues involved are relevant in both scientific and practical terms. The article sets out the hypothesis that conveying the state of the economic efficiency of energy development by grades does not reflect the real situation. Instead of ranks, it is proposed to form homogeneous groups of some countries based on non-linear data normalisation instead of today’s universally used linearisation. Grouping the euro area countries in the European Union on the basis of the value of the cost-effectiveness indicator for the energy development of their industrial sector confirmed the appropriateness of the proposed method-ology. In this way, three groups of countries were formed according to the level of cost-effectiveness achieved. The proposed methodology for grouping countries is universal and can be used for international comparisons of any kind.

Impact of Reservoir Heterogeneity on Diluted Geothermal Brine Reinjection
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: EDTA, geothermal brine, heterogeneity, hypersaline fluids, SaltPower generation, scale removal
Many geothermal plants have been shut down due to reinjection problems with the heat-depleted brine. In Denmark, only one out of three plants that extract heat from a geothermal fluid distributed to the district heating system is still working. In general, the large salinity of heat-depleted geothermal brines can be used to produce electricity with the help of turbines and generators through an osmotic power unit known as a SaltPower plant. Harnessing more energy out of the reinjection of geothermal brines is feasible without compromising the overall reservoir assurance when the iron is kept under control. This study is an attempt to determine the feasibility of the reinjection of a diluted geothermal brine with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) into homogeneous and heterogeneous sandstone rocks. The results from the coreflooding experiments show an improvement in the rock properties both in porosity and permeability for homogeneous and heterogeneous rocks. EDTA not only avoids th... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: deep learning, ensemble method, forecasting, Machine Learning, probabilistic forecasting, solar power generation
Solar power has rapidly become an increasingly important energy source in many countries over recent years; however, the intermittent nature of photovoltaic (PV) power generation has a significant impact on existing power systems. To reduce this uncertainty and maintain system security, precise solar power forecasting methods are required. This study summarizes and compares various PV power forecasting approaches, including time-series statistical methods, physical methods, ensemble methods, and machine and deep learning methods, the last of which there is a particular focus. In addition, various optimization algorithms for model parameters are summarized, the crucial factors that influence PV power forecasts are investigated, and input selection for PV power generation forecasting models are discussed. Probabilistic forecasting is expected to play a key role in the PV power forecasting required to meet the challenges faced by modern grid systems, and so this study provides a comparati... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CASMO-5/PARCS, PWR, Rostov-II, STREAM/RAST-K, VVER-1000
This paper presents the steady state analysis of the Rostov-II benchmark using the conventional two-step approach. It involves the STREAM/RAST-K and CASMO-5/PARCS code systems. This paper documents a comprehensive code-to-code comparison between Serpent 2, CASMO-5, and STREAM at the lattice level for the different fuel assemblies (FAs) loaded in the Rostov-II core; and between Serpent 2, PARCS, and RAST-K at the core level in 2D. Finally, the 3D results of both deterministic models are compared to the steady state measurements of the Rostov-II benchmark. With respect to the measurements available in the Rostov-II benchmark, comparable accuracy (30 ppm difference in boron concentration, 2% assembly power) with an industrial calculation scheme (BIPR8) are reported up to 36.73 EFPDs. The calculations reported in the paper showed that the modeling of the resonance self-shielding in the lattice code as well as the geometrical modeling of the reflector are key for an accurate solution (reduc... Subject: Environment
Keywords: catalytic oxidation, dimethyl sulfide, gas treatment, impregnated activated carbon, iodic acid, ozone, sulfur compounds, vacuum-ultra-violet (VUV), xenon excimer
Gaseous sulfur compounds are emitted from many facilities, such as wastewater facilities or biomass power plants, due to the decay of organic compounds. Gaseous dimethyl sulfide removal by ozone catalytic oxidation was investigated in this study. A Vacuum-Ultra-Violet (VUV) xenon excimer lamp of 172 nm was used for ozone generation without NOx generation, and activated carbon impregnated with iodic acid and H2SO4 was utilized as a catalyst. Performance assessment of dimethyl sulfide removal ability was carried out by a dynamic adsorption experiment. Empty-Bed-Contact-Time (EBCT), superficial velocity, concentration of dimethyl sulfide, temperature and humidity were set at 0.48 s, 0.15 m/s, 3.0 ppm, 25 °C and 45%, respectively. Without ozone addition, the adsorption capacity of impregnated activated carbon was 0.01 kg/kg. When ozone of 7.5 ppm was added, the adsorption capacity of impregnated activated carbon was increased to 0.15 kg/kg. Methane sulfonic acid, a reaction product of dime... [more]

A Novel Machine Learning-Based Approach for Induction Machine Fault Classifier Development—A Broken Rotor Bar Case Study
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Monitoring
Keywords: broken rotor bar, condition monitoring, fault classification, feature extraction, induction machine, Machine Learning, predictive maintenance, supervised learning
Rotor bars are one of the most failure-critical components in induction machines. We present an approach for developing a rotor bar fault identification classifier for induction machines. The developed machine learning-based models are based on simulated electrical current and vibration velocity data and measured vibration acceleration data. We introduce an approach that combines sequential model-based optimization and the nested cross-validation procedure to provide a reliable estimation of the classifiers’ generalization performance. These methods have not been combined earlier in this context. Automation of selected parts of the modeling procedure is studied with the measured data. We compare the performance of logistic regression and CatBoost models using the fast Fourier-transformed signals or their extracted statistical features as the input data. We develop a technique to use domain knowledge to extract features from specific frequency ranges of the fast Fourier-transformed sign... [more]

A Condition-Monitoring Approach for Diesel Engines Based on an Adaptive VMD and Sparse Representation Theory
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: condition monitoring, diesel engine, signal reconstruction, sparse representation, variational mode decomposition, vibration
This paper presents a novel method for condition monitoring using the RMS residual of vibration signal reconstruction based on trained dictionaries through sparse representation theory. Measured signals were firstly decomposed into intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) for training the initial dictionary. In this step, an adaptive variational mode decomposition (VMD) was proposed for providing information with higher accuracy, and the decompositions were used as discriminative atoms for sparse representation. Then, the overcomplete dictionary for sparse coding was learned from IMFs to reserve the highlight feature of the signals. As the dictionaries were trained, newly measured signals could be directly reconstructed without any signal decompositions or dictionary learning. This meant errors likely introduced by signal process techniques, such as VMD, EMD, etc., could be excluded from the condition monitoring. Moreover, the efficiency of the fault diagnosis was greatly improved, as the recon... [more]

Keywords: association rule mining, climate change, patent, technology convergence, wind power
Currently, the world is moving rapidly toward carbon neutrality, and renewable energy technology is very important in carbon neutrality. Among various renewable energy technologies, wind power is attracting much attention due to its sustainability, resource abundance, and high applicability. This study analyzed wind power patents from 2010 to 2021 to derive current global originality and convergence information. For IP5 countries, the growth stages of technology and the patent convergence networks were inferred by time series analysis and an association rule mining algorithm, respectively. The results showed that, during the analysis period, about 5000 patents were applied on annual average, and it was analyzed that China held the most patents at 48%, followed by the US, Europe, Korea, and Japan. According to the technology convergence network of patent codes from all the IP5 countries, patents related to ‘wind turbines with rotation axes in the wind direction’ occupied a very central... Investigation of the Bearing Characteristics of Bolts on a Coal−Rock Combined Anchor Body under Different Pull-Out Rates
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal–rock combined body, load-bearing properties, pull-out rate, pull-out test
In order to reveal the influence of the pull-out rate on the load-bearing properties of the coal−rock combined anchor body, the mechanical properties and failure characteristics of a coal−rock combined anchor body under different pull-out rates (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 mm/min) were studied using the pull-out test and theoretical analysis. The results show that the bearing capacity of the bolt on the coal−rock combined anchor body improves under a dynamic load, but the load-bearing properties of the coal−rock combined anchor body are different from those of the full rock (coal) anchor body. With the increase in the pull-out rate, the maximum pull-out load of the bolt on the coal−rock combined anchor body increases first, then decreases, and finally tends to be stable. Under the condition of a low drawing rate, the bearing capacity of the coal−rock combined anchor system can be greatly improved, but when the pull-out rate exceeds 20 mm/min, the bearing capacity of the anchor system is reduced... Keywords: centrifugal pump, particle swarm, performance prediction, performance relationship, support vector regression
It is of great significance to predict the energy performance of centrifugal pumps for the improvement of the pump design. However, the complex internal flow always affects the performance prediction of centrifugal pumps, particularly under low-flow operating conditions. Relying on the data-fitting method, a multi-condition performance prediction method for centrifugal pumps is proposed, where the performance relationship is incorporated into the particle swarm optimization algorithm, and the prediction model is optimized by automatically meeting the performance constraints. Compared with the experimental results, the performance under multiple operating conditions is well predicted by introducing performance constraints with the mean absolute relative error (MARE) for the head, power and efficiency of 0.85%, 1.53%,1.15%, respectively. Assessing the Benthic Response to Climate-Driven Methane Hydrate Destabilisation: State of the Art and Future Modelling Perspectives
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: benthic methane emissions, carbon cycle-climate feed-backs, climate change, environmental impacts, methane hydrate destabilisation
Modern observations and geological records suggest that anthropogenic ocean warming could destabilise marine methane hydrate, resulting in methane release from the seafloor to the ocean-atmosphere, and potentially triggering a positive feedback on global temperature. On the decadal to millennial timescales over which hydrate-sourced methane release is hypothesized to occur, several processes consuming methane below and above the seafloor have the potential to slow, reduce or even prevent such release. Yet, the modulating effect of these processes on seafloor methane emissions remains poorly quantified, and the full impact of benthic methane consumption on ocean carbon chemistry is still to be explored. In this review, we document the dynamic interplay between hydrate thermodynamics, benthic transport and biogeochemical reaction processes, that ultimately determines the impact of hydrate destabilisation on seafloor methane emissions and the ocean carbon cycle. Geometric Aspects of Assessing the Anticipated Energy Demand of a Designed Single-Family House

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: compactness indicator, correlation, geometric efficiency of a building, index of annual energy demand
Many factors affect energy demand, and knowing their impact is very important for being able to design a low-energy building. In this group of factors, there are those that cannot be changed and improved after the building is constructed, so taking them into account when choosing a project is important for energy savings. This group includes geometric parameters. We propose a geometric method of assessing the energy demand of a single-family house. The idea is to predict the level of energy demand by calculating the values of simple geometric parameters in the first stage of design. Based on the analysis of 30 realistically designed single-family houses, we show that the geometric indicators expressed by the base area Af, and perimeter P at a fixed building wall height h, perfectly characterize the amount of energy, both usable and final. Moreover, we show linear relationships between the nominated A/V and non-nominated EWA/FA, RCcd compactness ratios. This relationship allows one indi... [more]

Keywords: compressor, corner separation, end wall contouring, flow control, optimization design
To deal with corner separation in high-load axial compressors, this paper proposes a new end wall contouring method aimed at controlling the end wall secondary flow in more than one local area, generating a geometry with fewer control variables that is applicable for multiple working conditions. The new method defines more than one surface unit function, with different effects on end wall secondary flow. Then, the geometry of these surface unit functions will be superposed to generate the end wall contouring, to combine their flow control effects. After applying the new method to a bi-objective optimization design process, with 15 design variables aimed at minimizing the loss of cascade at 0° and 4° incidence, the optimal design reduces the total pressure loss of the high-load cascade by 5% under the former incidence and by 3% under the latter.
