Amino Acid-Based Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents for Extraction of Phenolic Compounds from Aqueous Environments

The environmental pollution of phenol-containing wastewater is an urgent problem with industrial development. Natural deep eutectic solvents provide an environmentally friendly alternation for the solvent extraction of phenol. This study synthesized a series of natural deep eutectic solvents with L-proline and decanoic acid as precursors, characterized by in situ infrared spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, and differential thermogravimetric analysis. Natural deep eutectic solvents have good thermal stability. The high-efficiency extraction of phenol from wastewater by natural deep eutectic solvents was investigated under mild conditions. In this paper, we formulate and solve a novel real-life large-scale automotive parts paint shop scheduling problem, which contains color arrangement restrictions, part arrangement restrictions, bracket restrictions, and multi-objectives. Based on these restrictions, we construct exact constraints and two objective functions to form a large-scale multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming problem. To reduce this scheduling problem’s complexity, we converted the multi-objective model into a multi-level objective programming problem by combining the rule-based scheduling algorithm and the adaptive Partheno-Genetic algorithm. In this paper, a new DEM calibration procedure based on two different types of procedures to compare simulation with experiments is proposed. The aim is to find the values of the interfacial adhesive surface energy and the coefficient of rolling friction between the particles to be used in the simulation. The approach adopted is the so-called Bulk Calibration method. The experimental values of the angle of repose and unconfined yield strength, found with a static testing method and by shear testing, respectively, are compared, respectively, with the angle of repose, found in a simulation reproducing the experimental procedure, and the unconfined yield strength, obtained from an idealized uniaxial testing procedure. Hydroxyapatite Precipitation and Accumulation in Granules and Its Effects on Activity and Stability of Partial Nitrifying Granules at Moderate and High Temperatures

Precipitation and accumulation of calcium phosphate in granular sludge has attracted research attention recently for phosphate removal and recovery from wastewater. This study investigated calcium phosphate accumulation from granulation stage to steady state by forming heterotrophic granules at different COD/N ratios at 21 and 32 °C, respectively, followed by the transformation of heterotrophic granules to partial nitrifying granules. It was found that mature granules accumulated around 60−80% minerals in granules, much higher than young granules with only around 30% ash contents. In addition, high temperature promoted co-precipitation of hydroxyapatite and calcite in granules with more calcite than hydroxyapatite and only 4.1% P content, while mainly hydroxyapatite was accumulated at the moderate temperature with 7.7% P content. Enzyme-Assisted Ultrasonic Extraction of Total Flavonoids from Acanthopanax senticosus and Their Enrichment and Antioxidant Properties

Flavonoids are one of the important active ingredients from Acanthopanax senticosus, with a variety of biological functions, such as antioxidant and antibacterial properties. The aim of this work was to investigate enzyme-assisted ultrasonic extraction of A. senticosus flavonoids and their enrichment and antioxidant properties. We found that the optimal extraction process after Box−Behnken response surface optimization had the following parameters: a 3:2 ratio of cellulase to pectinase, enzyme mixture amount of 6960 U g−1, enzyme treatment time of 59.80 min; temperature of 53.70 °C, and pH value of 6.05. The yield of total flavonoids reached 36.95 ± 0.05 mg g−1. Internal Flow and Cavitation Analysis of Scroll Oil Pump by CFD Method

In this study, a three-dimensional model with actual clearances was established for a scroll oil pump, and the internal flow was simulated by the CFD method. The internal flows at different rotation angles were studied, and the cavitation and pressure pulsation in the scroll pump under different working conditions were analyzed. The results show that the flow in the two working chambers of the scroll pump is asymmetric due to its structural characteristics and motion mode. The high-pressure pulsation occurs in the working chamber during the end of the suction and the beginning of discharge. Under the action of high-pressure difference, there is a high-speed jet in the clearance between the orbiting and fixed scrolls, which causes a large area of cavitation downstream of the clearance. Combining Kinetic and Constraint-Based Modelling to Better Understand Metabolism Dynamics

To understand the phenotypic capabilities of organisms, it is useful to characterise cellular metabolism through the analysis of its pathways. Dynamic mathematical modelling of metabolic networks is of high interest as it provides the time evolution of the metabolic components. However, it also has limitations, such as the necessary mechanistic details and kinetic parameters are not always available. On the other hand, large metabolic networks exhibit a complex topological structure which can be studied rather efficiently in their stationary regime by constraint-based methods. These methods produce useful predictions on pathway operations. In this review, we present both modelling techniques and we show how they bring complementary views of metabolism. In particular, we show on a simple example how both approaches can be used in conjunction to shed some light on the dynamics of metabolic networks.

The aim of this study was the development and optimization of chitosan and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) in situ gelling systems, loaded with bupivacaine hydrochloride for topical ocular administration. This study is based on the properties of two polymers: chitosan, which has mucoadhesive action and is a pH-sensitive polymer, but also the cellulose derivative hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, a thermosensitive polymer which has mucoadhesive properties and increases the viscosity of systems. The analysis and optimization of in situ gelling systems were performed based on an experimental design and response surface methodology. The following formulation parameters were considered: X1 = chitosan concentration (0.5%, 1%), X2 = HPMC E 5 LV concentration (2%, 5%) and X3 = Chitosan/HPMC E 5 LV ratio (1/1, 2/1). Using agricultural technology to assist crop fertilization is an important research innovation that can not only reduce the workload of farmers, but also reduce resource waste and soil pollution. This paper describes the design and development of a water-fertilizer control system based on the soil conductivity threshold. The system uses a low-cost wireless sensor network as a data collection and transmission tool and transmits the data to the decision support system. Air Pollution Analysis during the Lockdown on the City of Milan

From February 2020, the progressive adoption of measures to contain coronavirus’s contagion has resulted in a sudden change in anthropogenic activities in Italy, especially in Lombardy. From a scientific point of view, this situation represents a unique laboratory for understanding and predicting the consequences of specific measures aimed at improving air quality. In this work, the lockdown effect on Milan’s (Italy) air quality was analyzed. The PM10 and PM2.5 values were measured by the ARPA Lombardia, and the real-time on-road (ROM) air quality monitoring network indicates the seasonality of these pollutants, which typically record the highest values in the coldest months of the year. The 10-year particulate matter concentrations analysis shows a PM10 reduction of 35% from 2010 to 2020.
