Does Economic Globalisation Harm Climate? New Evidence from European Union
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: climate policy, economic globalisation, economic policy, European Union, GHG emissions
The issue of globalisation-induced greenhouse gas emissions is an ongoing topic and a major challenge to the EU climate goals of achieving non-zero emissions by 2050. In the light of this ongoing debate on the globalisation−environment nexus, the paper examines the impact of economic globalisation on climate in EU countries over the period 2000−2019 and provide some new empirical evidence. After applying the panel cointegration analysis and the Granger causality test, the dynamic panel analysis is performed for 26 EU countries using the Arellano−Bond estimator. For the policy perspective, the analysed sample of countries is grouped into two subpanels according to their level of development—EU countries with above-average and below-average GDP per capita. After testing the effects of different dimensions of economic globalisation and environmental taxes on GHG emissions, the results revealed the following: (1) Trade globalisation is detrimental to the climate, as trade openness signific... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: chip, economic, environmental, forest bioenergy, pellet, social, Sustainability, value chain
Forest bioenergy value chains can offer attractive opportunities to promote economic development and mitigate climate change. However, implementing profitable and efficient forest biomass value chains requires overcoming barriers that continue to hinder the development of bioenergy systems in several jurisdictions. The objective of this study was to compare the economic, social, and environmental sustainability of various potential configurations of forest bioenergy value chains, including forest biomass supply and bioenergy production chains, in the Capitale-Nationale region of Quebec (Canada), which is a jurisdiction that has considerable forest resources but makes little use of bioenergy. We based our study on the ToSIA model parameterization and compared various policy measures, biomass supply, and logistics scenarios for 2008 and 2030. Our results showed that wood chip and pellet value chains in the Capitale-Nationale region would positively contribute to the regional economy in 2... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active disturbance rejection control, cross-coupled synchronous compensator, permanent magnet synchronous motor, position synchronous control
In order to solve the problem that the position synchronous performance of dual permanent magnet synchronous motor servo system is easily affected by parameter perturbation and load disturbance, an anti-disturbance integrated position synchronous control strategy of dual permanent magnet synchronous motor system is proposed. Firstly, the integral mathematical model of a dual permanent magnet synchronous motor system is established. After that, the third-order linear extended state observer is constructed to observe and compensate for disturbance in order to improve the anti-disturbance performance of the position loop. At the same time, a cross-coupled position synchronous compensator is added to improve the synchronous performance of the system, and through the Bode diagram analysis method in the frequency domain, the system stability and anti-disturbance performance are researched. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by experimental research.

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: data enhancement, deep learning, defect classification, EMAT, ultrasonic guided wave testing, Wasserstein generative adversarial network
A network ultrasonic Wasserstein generative adversarial network (US-WGAN), which can generate ultrasonic guided wave signals, is proposed herein to solve the problem of insufficient datasets for pipe ultrasonic nondestructive testing based on deep neural networks. This network was trained with pre-enhanced and US-WGAN-enhanced datasets with 3000 epochs; the ultrasound signals generated by the US-WGAN were proved to be of high quality (peak signal-to-noise ratio scores in the range of 30−50 dB) and belong to the same population distribution as the original dataset. To verify the effectiveness of the US-WGAN, a fully connected neural network with seven layers was established, and the performances of the network after data enhancement using the US-WGAN and popular virtual defects were verified for the same network parameters and structures. The results show that adoption of the US-WGAN effectively suppresses the overfitting phenomenon while training the network and increases the dataset s... [more]

Unsteady Effects of Wake on Downstream Rotor at Low Reynolds Numbers
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: low Reynolds number, numerical simulation, tip clearance vortex, unsteady effects, wake
In a compressor, the periodic wake is an inherently unsteady phenomenon that affects the downstream flow conditions and loading distribution. Thus, understanding the physical mechanisms of these unsteady effects is important for eliminating flow losses and improving compressor performance, particularly at low Reynolds numbers. To understand the influence of the upstream wake on the downstream flow field structure, this paper describes numerical simulations of a one-stage high-pressure compressor at altitudes of 10−20 km. The influence of the wake on rotor flow blockage at different Reynolds numbers is analyzed, and the unsteady interaction between the upstream wake and boundary layer or tip leakage flow is discussed. The results indicate that the wake has a beneficial effect on the efficiency of the rotor at high Reynolds numbers, but this weakens and becomes negative as the Reynolds number decreases. The wake can reduce the flow blockage in the mainflow region. Due to the wake, the le... [more]

Keywords: DFIG, doubly-fed induction generator, MPPT, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, vector control, WECS, wind energy conversion system
The most prominent and rapidly increasing source of electrical power generation, wind energy conversion systems (WECS), can significantly improve the situation with regard to remote communities’ power supply. The main constituting elements of a WECS are a wind turbine, a mechanical transmission system, a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), a rotor side converter (RSC), a common DC-link capacitor, and a grid-side converter. Vector control is center for RSC and GSC control techniques. Because of direct and quadrature components, the active and reactive power can also be controller precisely. This study tracks the maximum power point (MPP) using a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller strategy. The MPPT technique provides a voltage reference to control the maximum power conversion at the turbine end. The performance and efficiency of the suggested control strategy are validated by WECS simulation under fluctuating wind speed. The MATLAB/Simulink environment using simpower syst... [more]

Scenario Analysis of an Electric Power System in Colombia Considering the El Niño Phenomenon and the Inclusion of Renewable Energies
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: El Niño phenomenon, Planning, scenario analysis, vulnerability
This paper develops and analyzes four energy scenarios for Colombia that consider the El Niño phenomenon and the inclusion of renewable energies in the energy generation matrix for the period 2020−2035. A comparative analysis is presented between the results of the different scenarios proposed. The most relevant finding is the use of the reserve margin as an indicator of system reliability. A scenario which included 7214 MW of large-scale non-conventional renewable energy, 10,000 MW of distributed generation, and 12,240 MW of hydroelectric power was assumed, with a reserve margin of over 50%. Additionally, it was found that for the scenarios in which a generation capacity with non-conventional renewable energies of less than 10,000 MW in 2034 was assumed, the reserve margin of the system in the seasons of the El Niño phenomenon will be less than historical records of the system. Alternatively, it was found that the scenarios in which the inclusion of at least 9600 MW of the electric po... [more]

The Significance of the “Power Purchase Agreement” for the Development of Local Energy Markets in the Theoretical Perspective of Polish Legal Conditions
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: local energy market, power purchase agreement, renewable energy production
Today’s geopolitical and economic situation (negative economic effects of COVID-19; war in Ukraine) adversely affects the energy market situation. These circumstances make it necessary to quickly adapt the previously adopted long-term strategies for transforming the energy market to maximise the country’s energy security through greater diversification and energy self-reliance. The legal systems of the Member States, including Poland, provide for various instruments to support the production of electricity from renewable sources. However, each Member State has a different potential for producing energy from renewable sources (later as RES), so the measures used to promote the use of energy from renewable sources in the broad sense are tailored to achieve the desired level of renewable energy production, particularly under EU law. For this reason, a variety of support models are used in the Member States, which are subdivided into direct (e.g., feed-in tariffs) and indirect (e.g., tax c... [more]

Passivity-Based Control of Dual Active Bridge Converter in Constant Power Load Condition
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: constant power load, dual active bridge, passivity-based control
This paper presents a passivity-based control (PBC) based on the Euler−Lagrange (EL) model for dual active bridge (DAB) converters in the constant power load (CPL) condition. The EL model, which is derived from Kirchhoff’s current equations at the input and output nodes, is first presented in the DAB application, and the bidirectional CPL is considered in the theoretical analysis, simulation, and physical verification. The PBC has strong robustness to large-signal disturbance and negative incremental resistance load, and it is suitable for DAB converters in the CPL condition. In this paper, the DAB’s EL model, passivity analysis, stability analysis, and controller design are described in detail. The simulation results based on SIMULINK are also given in this paper. Finally, a DAB converter prototype is built to demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed approach.

Research on the Impact of Output Adjustment Strategy and Carbon Tax Policy on the Stability of the Steel Market
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: bounded rationality, carbon tax policy, China’s steel industry, market stability, output adjustment, repeated dynamic game
China’s steel industry has not yet implemented a carbon tax policy, and its benefits and impacts are still in the theoretical research stage. In addition, enterprises have an insufficient ability to respond to changes in production and sales, which seriously affects the market’s stability. The government should simultaneously start from multiple perspectives, such as energy conservation, emission reduction, dynamic adjustments, and business decisions. Therefore, this research constructs a repeated dynamic game model including carbon tax policy and other mixed reduction policies, and studies the stability and related indicators of the market. The results are as follows: (1) the output adjustment policies that enterprises can implement will show an increasing trend under the single carbon tax policy. (2) The output adjustment policies that enterprises with larger output will also show an increasing trend under the mixed emission reduction policy when emission reduction targets continue t... Study on the Mechanism of Water Blocking in Tight Sandstone Gas Reservoirs Based on Centrifugal and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Methods
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: fracture, nuclear magnetic resonance, tight sandstone gas reservoir, water blocking
Tight sandstone gas reservoirs are characterized by deep burial, high pressure, tight matrix, fracture development, and the prevalence of edge and bottom water. Because of the small pore throats, the phenomenon of capillary force is evident. In addition, the low permeability of the reservoir and the difference in fluid properties make the gas reservoir undergo severe water-blocking damage. In this paper, centrifugal and nuclear magnetic resonance methods are used. The relationship between pore throat characteristics, fluid distribution, and gas reservoir water-blocking mechanism is studied and analyzed. The experimental results show that fracture formation increases the porosity of the small pores and expands the pore size distribution. It is conducive to the displacement of the bound water in the small pore space and the reduction in the bound water saturation. When increasing the same displacement pressure, the core porosity increases. More residual water in the tiny pores is convert... [more]

Not Fit for 55: Prioritizing Human Well-Being in Residential Energy Consumption in the European Union
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Fit for 55, HDI, human well-being, path analysis, residential energy use
An analysis of the 27 European Union (EU) member states over the years 2000−2018 examines the relationship between residential energy use per capita and human well-being, measured by the Human Development Index (HDI). The EU’s ‘Fit for 55’ policy package to reduce greenhouse gas emissions may derail post-communist member states’ convergence (PCMS) to the same level of well-being of households in old member states (OMS). The aim of this article is to assess both the direct and indirect relationship between residential energy use per capita and human well-being. The findings indicate a direct connection in addition to the indirect effect between them. Therefore, reducing or leveling off residential energy consumption in PCMS will prevent human development convergence within the EU. The findings indicate the lack of convergence, because of the ‘Fit for 55’ policy package assumption of a decline of residential energy consumption in all member states could stagnate or lower HDI in PCMS and... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: evaluation index, multi-objective optimization, ocean thermal energy, organic Rankine cycle
This study selects five parameters as decision variables for the optimization design of an ocean thermal energy conversion system, including the evaporating temperature, the condensing temperature, the pinch-point temperature difference between the evaporator and condenser, and the working fluid flow rate. The optimization goal is to maximize the net output power per unit area and the exergy efficiency. The final scheme is comprehensively screened out from the Pareto solution set through some evaluation indexes. Finally, this study also analyzes the effects of four decision variables on the optimization objectives and the evaluation indexes. This study finds that evaporating temperature and condensing temperature have similar effects on the two objective functions. However, the pinch-point temperature difference has different effects on them. The back work ratio is obviously affected by the condensing temperature.
