Keywords: carbonate, enhanced oil recovery, Ostwald–de Waele power-law model, polymer flooding, polysaccharides, shear-thinning
Natural polymers have been investigated as part of the endeavors of green chemistry practice in the oil field. However, natural polymer studies are still preliminary. The current study examines okra’s (natural polymer) efficiency for polymer flooding, particularly in Kazakhstan. The evaluation targets the heavy oil trapped in carbonate reservoirs. SEM and FTIR were used to characterize morphology and chemical composition. A rheology study was conducted under different shear rates for three plausible concentrations: 1 wt.%, 2 wt.% and 5 wt.%. The core flooding was challenged by the low porosity and permeability of the core. The results showed that okra’s size is between 150−900 μm. The morphology can be described by rod-like structures with pores and staking as sheet structures. The FTIR confirmed that the solution contains a substantial amount of polysaccharides. During the rheology test, okra showed a proportional relationship between the concentration and viscosity increase, and an i... [more]

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, renewable energy system, shunt converter, total harmonic distortion, unified power quality conditioner
The Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) is a technology that has successfully addressed power quality issues. In this paper, a photovoltaic system with battery storage powered Unified Power Quality Conditioner is presented. Total harmonic distortion of the grid current during extreme voltage sag and swell conditions is more than 5% when UPQC is controlled with synchronous reference frame theory (SRF) and instantaneous reactive power theory (PQ) control. The shunt active filter of the UPQC is controlled by the artificial neural network to overcome the above problem. The proposed artificial neural network controller helps to simplify the control complexity and mitigate power quality issues effectively. This study aims to use a neural network to control a shunt active filter of the UPQC to maximise the supply of active power loads and grid and also used to mitigate the harmonic problem due to non-linear loads in the grid. The performance of the model is tested under various case scen... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: case study, economic analysis, Hydrogen, infrastructure, pipeline
South Korea has a plan to realize a hydrogen economy, and it is essential to establish a main hydrogen pipeline for hydrogen transport. This study develops a cost estimation model applicable to the construction of hydrogen pipelines and conducts an economic analysis to evaluate various scenarios for hydrogen pipeline construction. As a result, the cost of modifying an existing natural gas to a hydrogen pipeline is the lowest, however, there are issues with the safety of the modified hydrogen pipes from natural gas and the necessity of the existing natural gas pipelines. In the case of a short-distance hydrogen pipeline, the cost is about 1.8 times that of the existing natural gas pipeline modification, but it is considered a transitional scenario before the construction of the main hydrogen pipeline nationwide. Lastly, in the case of long-distance main hydrogen pipeline construction, it takes about 3.7 times as much cost as natural gas pipeline modification, however it has the advantag... [more]
On the Monotonicity and Positivity of Physics-Informed Neural Networks for Highly Anisotropic Diffusion Equations
Wenjuan Zhang, Mohammed Al Kobaisi
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diffusion equation, monotonicity, permeability anisotropy, physics informed neural networks, porous media, subsurface flow
Physics-informed neural network (PINN) models are developed in this work for solving highly anisotropic diffusion equations. Compared to traditional numerical discretization schemes such as the finite volume method and finite element method, PINN models are meshless and, therefore, have the advantage of imposing no constraint on the orientations of the diffusion tensors or the grid orthogonality conditions. To impose solution positivity, we tested PINN models with positivity-preserving activation functions for the last layer and found that the accuracy of the corresponding PINN solutions is quite poor compared to the vanilla PINN model. Therefore, to improve the monotonicity properties of PINN models, we propose a new loss function that incorporates additional terms which penalize negative solutions, in addition to the usual partial differential equation (PDE) residuals and boundary mismatch. Various numerical experiments show that the PINN models can accurately capture the tensorial e... [more]

Keywords: concentrating solar power, hybrid power plants, pumped hydro storage
Insular power systems are a special case of infrastructure for power production due to their particular land morphology with extensive hills and ridges. For a higher renewable energy share in the power production, a dedicated design according to local constraints is required. The high wind and solar resources of such cases can be utilized with offshore wind turbines and concentrating solar power, respectively. In addition, pumped-hydro storage is a mature and suitable technology for such terrain. A case study is presented in the island of Rhodes to obtain a renewable energy penetration higher than 70%. The technical and financial requirements for this implementation support the design of this system, while the introduction of concentrating solar power enables significant energy savings during the periods of peak demand of the island. An annual RES penetration close to 80% can be achieved with the combined operation of both plants. The economic viability of the required investment can b... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: dynamic PV array reconfiguration, moving cloud, PSO algorithm, Rao algorithm, switching optimization, time lag
The operation of the photovoltaic (PV) system under partial shading conditions (PSC) is complicated since the output characteristic of the PV system is profoundly affected by the heterogeneous irradiance of PSC. This paper proposes a dynamic reconfiguration framework to tackle PSC in the PV array. Continuous operation of the dynamic PV array reconfiguration under cloud-induced partial shading is considered by developing an emulator of the moving cloud. In addition, the Particle Swarm Optimization and Rao algorithms are improved to obtain the optimal PV array configuration under PSC. The operation of switching is enhanced by simultaneously considering the total switching times and the operation of highly active switches. The simulation results on the 9×9 PV array demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework in terms of reducing the number of local maximum power points on the power-voltage characteristic, enhancing power output, and relieving stress on the switching operation... Soon-kyu Hwang, Byung-gun Jung, Jong-kap Ahn
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blow-by gas, control strategy, crude oil, feed-forward control, FPSO, inert gas, topside
The energy required for the transportation of raw materials and the production of most manufactured goods depends on crude oil. For these reasons, FPSOs (Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading) have become the primary production units of crude oil offshore. It is leading to an increase in the number and expanding of the production and storage facilities of the FPSOs. An increase in the oil production at the topside facilities of FPSOs will contain more gases, which leads to a rise in blow-by gas. Changes to the blanket gas system may be necessary as the flow rate of the blow-by gas is expected to increase. The purpose of this paper is to suggest a novel blanket gas system with a proper control method for controlling the cargo tank pressure when the blow-by gas is occurring. Unlike the existing system, in this proposal, the purge header that supplies the inert gas is possible for a use of the vent purpose in the situation where the blow-by gas is generated. By using the vent head... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: FEFLOW, groundwater flow and heat transport, natural temperature change, open-loop geothermal heat pump, simulation model, thermal impact
An alluvial fan is a good area to install open-loop geothermal heat pump (GHP) systems due to shallower aquifers, faster groundwater flow, and fewer land subsidence risks. The natural temperature change in groundwater occurs in alluvial fans due to the recharge of river water and faster groundwater flow, and the thermal impact of the open-loop system has not been studied well in such areas. The purpose of this research is to understand the thermal impact of open-loop GHP systems on an alluvial fan. A regional 3D model of groundwater flow with heat transport was created to determine the distribution of flow velocity and temperature of groundwater. After that, two local models with different groundwater velocities were constructed to demonstrate the thermal impact of an open-loop GHP system using one extraction and one injection well. The results indicated that the local model with faster groundwater flow had a smaller thermal impact. The natural temperature change in groundwater causes... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: combined operation of wind power, dynamic programming, high proportion of wind power consumption, penalty function, pumped-storage power station, thermal power
For the multi-energy power system composed of thermal power, wind power, and a pumped-storage power station aiming at minimizing coal consumption of the power grid, an optimal dispatch model is established in this paper. Its advantage is to allow the power grid to accept a high proportion of new energy while ensuring power demand. The dynamic programming method is used to solve the problem. In the solution process, the traditional dynamic programming method is improved by introducing the penalty function and the dynamic value of the state variable, which can ensure the reliability of the power supply while achieving the optimization goal, as well as realize the full utilization of energy. Using the example of a high proportion of wind power systems with a pumped-storage power station as the energy storage mode and considering the relevant constraints after the heating transformation of the thermal power plant, our built model solves these challenges. The results show that when the maxi... [more]

Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is a set of technologies aimed at capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from point-source emitters to either store permanently or use as a feedstock to produce chemicals and fuels. In this paper, the potential benefits of CCUS integration into the energy supply sector are evaluated from a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) perspective by comparing two different routes for the CO2 captured from a natural gas combined cycle (NGCC). Both the complete storage of the captured CO2 and its partial utilization to produce dimethyl ether are investigated. Moreover, the assessment is performed considering the region-specific features of two of the largest CO2 emitters in Europe, namely Italy and Poland. Results shows that the complete storage of the captured CO2 reduces Global Warming Potential (GWP) by ~89% in Italy and ~97%, in Poland. On the other hand, the partial utilization of CO2 to produce dimethyl ether leads to a decrease of ~58% in Italy and ~6... [more]

Keywords: control measures of surrounding rock, roof movement, support stability, ultra-large height mining face, working resistance monitoring of supports
Surrounding rock control and support stability in the process of coal seam mining in ultra-large height mining face are the key to normal mine operation. In this study, the roof movement and deformation of an ultra-large height mining face are analyzed, and the working resistance of the ultra-large height mining face is obtained by introducing the equivalent immediate roof. By analyzing the coal wall spalling, the multiple positions of the spalling and the required support force of the support are obtained. At the same time, ultra-large height supports are more prone to instability problems. In this study, the stability of the ultra-large height supports was analyzed by establishing a mechanical model. The results show that: 1. The overturning limit angle of support has a hyperbolic relationship with the center of gravity. 2. Under the condition of ultra-large height, the increase in the base width of the bracket significantly improves the stability of the supports. 3. The sliding limi... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy consumption model, Machine Learning, mobile robotics, UAV
The growing interest in the utilization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) demands minimizing the costs of robot maintenance, where one of the main aspects relates to energy consumption. This manuscript presents a novel approach to create an energy consumption model for UAVs. The authors prove, based on experimentally collected data using a drone carrying various payloads, that Machine Learning (ML) algorithms allow to sufficiently accurately estimate a power signal. As opposed to the classical approach with mathematical modeling, the presented method does not require any knowledge about the drone’s construction, thus making it a universal tool. Calculated metrics show the Decision Tree is the most suitable algorithm among eight different ML methods due to its high energy prediction accuracy of at least 97.5% and a short learning time which was equal to 2 ms for the largest dataset.

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: biochemical responses, climate change, physiological responses, yield
Agricultural activities depend heavily on irrigation in arid and semi-arid climates, which are one of the most water-limited areas, reducing agricultural productivity. As the climate changes, the lack of precipitation is expected to aggravate in these areas, requiring careful management of water use. Subsurface water retention technology (SWRT) may hold promise as a management tool to save water use and improve crop drought resistance. In this context, the effect of SWRT on tomato yield, growth, physiology, and biochemical characteristics, as well as soil characteristics under two regimes of water (100% field capacity (FC) and 50% FC) in open field conditions, was investigated. The results here suggest that drought affected tomato performance. Nevertheless, SWRT application significantly increased tomato yield (38%), chlorophyll fluorescence (3%), gas exchange (39%), and chlorophyll total content (49%), as well as soil fertility characteristics, with significant increases in organic ma... Keywords: damage variable, numerical simulation, rock damage, strain softening, stress-strain curve
Damage mechanics play an important role in the analysis of rock deformation and failure. Numerous damage variables have been proposed and the corresponding continuum damage models were suggested. Knowing how to apply these theoretical models appropriately in numerical simulations is the key to whether they can be adopted to solve practical problems. The continuum damage models were grouped into empirical damage models, statistical damage models, and elastoplastic damage models in this article. Their applicability and limitations were studied according to some numerical simulations of the most basic uniaxial compression test of a cylinder rock sample. Three representative damage models were chosen from the literature and applied to FEM numerical simulations by introducing a self-developed program. The stress-strain curves due to damage were obtained from the numerical simulation results and compared to those from the experimental results. The damage distribution and evolution of differe... Keywords: active magnetic regenerator, performance investigation, pulsed magnetic field, thermodynamic cycle
Magnetic refrigeration is acknowledged as a potential substitute for the conventional vapor-compression refrigeration technology, owing to its high efficiency and environmental friendliness. Existing magnetic refrigeration systems are mostly based on permanent magnets, owing to the characteristics of lower magnetic field intensity, non-uniform magnetic field distribution, and lower operating frequency due to the moving parts, which results in a low cooling capacity and small temperature difference. Thus, this study proposes the application of a pulsed magnetic field, with a high intensity and frequency, to a magnetic refrigeration system to achieve a high performance. A verified numerical model is established to investigate the thermodynamic cycle and cooling performance of an active magnetic regenerator (AMR). The transient and steady-state performances of AMR under pulsed and permanent magnetic fields are compared. The results suggest that an AMR can establish a stable temperature di... [more]

Long linear antennas for very low frequency radio transmissions, supported by aerostats, unanchored, and raised to high altitudes, present themselves as slow-moving, highly conductive disturbances in cloud layers, acquiring an electrical charge and being subjected to intense coronae. High electric field strength values around those objects increase the risk of lightning strikes, which could be disastrous to the mechanical structures of the balloon mission (both the antenna and the balloon) and the radio transmitter. This paper aims to investigate the inception of lightning strikes over two essential elements of such missions: a talc-covered latex (balloon material) and the model of the linear antenna, made of different materials. Based on the high-voltage experiments with the recorded electrical discharges, the properties, functions, and possible ameliorations of the talc cover are presented, as well as the basic characteristics of lightning forms around the very long antenna system, w... Keywords: battery management systems, battery model parameter estimation, Coulomb counting, curve fitting, Li-ion battery, open-circuit voltagemodels, state-of-charge estimation
A battery management system (BMS) plays a crucial role to ensure the safety, efficiency, and reliability of a rechargeable Li-ion battery pack. State of charge (SOC) estimation is an important operation within a BMS. Estimated SOC is required in several BMS operations, such as remaining power and mileage estimation, battery capacity estimation, charge termination, and cell balancing. The open-circuit voltage (OCV) look-up-based SOC estimation approach is widely used in battery management systems. For OCV lookup, the OCV−SOC characteristic is empirically measured and parameterized a priori. The literature shows numerous OCV−SOC models and approaches to characterize them and use them in SOC estimation. However, the selection of an OCV−SOC model must consider several factors: (i) Modeling errors due to approximations, age/temperature effects, and cell-to-cell variations; (ii) Likelihood and severity of errors when the OCV−SOC parameters are rounded; (iii) Computing system requirements to... Keywords: current density, double Fourier series, leakage inductance, unified expression of leakage inductance calculation
Leakage inductance is one of the key parameters of a transformer, and it is often intentionally integrated into transformers. Rogowski’s equation is generally used for leakage inductance calculation; however, it is only applicable to concentric winding transformers where windings have the same height. Consequently, it has limited applications. This paper proposes a transformer leakage inductance calculation method using a double Fourier series. The limitation of Rogowski’s leakage inductance equation was analyzed in practical applications, and a new model for calculating the leakage inductance of a double-group-overlapping winding transformer was derived. Experimental prototypes of transformers were developed, and their simulation models were built in Ansys. The correctness of the proposed calculation method for transformer leakage inductance using a double Fourier series was verified by comparing the calculation results with the simulation and measured ones.
