Extensional Magnetorheology as a Tool for Optimizing the Formulation of Ferrofluids in Oil-Spill Clean-Up Processes
José Hermenegildo García-Ortiz, Francisco José Galindo-Rosales
July 17, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: extensional magneto-rheology, ferrofluids, magnetic clean-up process, nanofluids, oil-spills
In this study, we propose a new way of optimising the formulation of ferrofluids for oil-spill clean-up processes, based on the rheological behaviour under extensional flow and magnetic fields. Different commercial ferrofluids (FFs), consisting of a set of six ferrofluids with different magnetic saturation and particle concentration, were characterised in a Capillary Break-Up Extensional Rheometer (CaBER) equipped with two magnetorheological cells that allow imposing a homogeneous and tunable magnetic field either parallel or perpendicular to the flow direction. The filament thinning process with different intensities and orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the flow direction was analysed, and the results showed that the perpendicular configuration did not have a significant effect on the behaviour of the ferrofluids, as in shear magnetorheometry. However, the parallel configuration allowed to determine that the formulation of ferrofluids for oil-spill cleaning processes... [more]

Keywords: differential neural network, generalized Lotka-Volterra model, microbial interactions, mixed cultures
The structure of mixed microbial cultures—such as the human gut microbiota—is influenced by a complex interplay of interactions among its community members. The objective of this study was to propose a strategy to characterize microbial interactions between particular members of the community occurring in a simulator of the human gastrointestinal tract used as the experimental system. Four runs were carried out separately in the simulator: two of them were fed with a normal diet (control system), and two more had the same diet supplemented with agave fructans (fructan-supplemented system). The growth kinetics of Lactobacillus spp., Bifidobacterium spp., Salmonella spp., and Clostridium spp. were assessed in the different colon sections of the simulator for a nine-day period. The time series of microbial concentrations were used to estimate specific growth rates and pair-wise interaction coefficients as considered by the generalized Lotka-Volterra (gLV) model. A differential neural netw... [more]
Distinct and Quantitative Validation for Predictive Process Modelling in Steam Distillation of Caraway Fruits and Lavender Flower Following a Quality-By-Design (QbD) Approach
Thorsten Roth, Lukas Uhlenbrock, Jochen Strube
July 17, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: caraway, Carum carvi, essential oil, Lavandula, lavender, Modelling, physico-chemical model, steam distillation
A quality by design (QbD) approach as part of process development in the regulated, pharmaceutical industry requires many experiments. Due to the large number, process development is time consuming and cost intensive. A key to modern process development to reduce the number of required experiments is a predictive simulation with a validated physico-chemical model. In order to expand the process expertise of steam distillation through maximum information, a model development workflow is used in this paper, which focuses on implementation, verification, parametrization and validation of a physico-chemical model. Process robustness and sensitivity of target values can be determined from the developed general model and design of experiments with statistical evaluations. The model validation is exemplified by two different types of plant systems, caraway fruits (Carum Carvi) and lavender flowers (Lavandula).

July 17, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cold sintering, metal-air battery, shape change, zinc-air battery, Zn anodes
Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) offer a sustainable and safe pathway to low-cost energy storage. Recent research shows that thermally-sintered porous Zn electrodes with a three-dimensional network structure can enhance the performance and lifetime of ZABs, but they are expensive and energy-intensive to manufacture. In this work, monolithic porous Zn electrodes fabricated through an efficient cold sintering process (CSP) were studied for rechargeable ZABs. Electrochemical studies and extended charge-discharge cycling show good Zn utilization with no observable performance degradation when compared to Zn foil. Post-mortem analysis after 152 h of cycling reveals that the cold-sintered electrodes retain their original structure. A techno-economic assessment of the cold sintering process confirms significant reductions in both the time and energy required to manufacture Zn electrodes compared to a comparable thermal sintering process.

Isabella Pecorini, Renato Iannelli
July 17, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: biocovers, biofiltration systems, greenhouse gases emissions mitigation, landfill odor mitigation, microbial methane oxidation
Emissions from daily and final covers of municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills can produce significant impacts on local and global environments. Simplifying, landfills can cause local impacts with odor emissions and global impacts with GHGs. This work focuses on hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methane (CH4) emissions, with the aim of studying how it is possible to reduce their impacts by means of biofiltration systems. Both field and laboratory investigations have been carried out in Casa Rota Landfill (Tuscany, Italy). In the field trials, four pilot-scale biocovers made of compost from a source-selected organic fraction (SS compost), compost from a mechanical biological treatment plant—the residual fractions of the MSW, a mixed compost (SS-MSW compost) and sand were monitored in the daily cover area of the landfill, where high emissions were detected. Results showed that high CH4 and H2S emissions reductions occurred in the mixed SS-MSW compost plot, given a maximum methane oxidation effi... [more]

July 17, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, gasoil hydrogenation, Hydrogen, PEO membrane, PI membrane, separation
A novel process of membrane separation for H2/CO2 of shifted syngas coupled with gasoil hydrogenation (NMGH) is proposed. First, a new process, with two-stage CO2-selective and one-stage H2-selective membranes, was developed to substitute the conventional PSA separation devices to remove CO2 and purify H2 in coal gasification refineries to reduce energy consumption and investment costs. Then, the process was coupled with gasoil hydrogenation and the recycled H2 produced by the hydrogenation reactor could be further purified by the H2-selective membrane, which increased the H2 concentration of the hydrogenation reactor inlet by about 11 mol.% compared with the conventional direct recycling process, and the total system pressure was reduced by about 2470 kPa. At the same time, this additional membrane separation and purification prevented the accumulation of CO/CO2 in the recycled H2, which ensured the activity of the catalyst in the reactor and the long-term stable operation of the devi... July 17, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: ajmalicine, Catharanthus roseus, fluxomics, nanosensor, TIA pathway
Ajmalicine is one of the most popular antihypertensive drugs obtained from the root barks of Cathranthus roseus (L.) G. Don and Rauvolfia serpentine (L.) Benth. ex Kurz. It has also potential antimicrobial, cytotoxic, central depressant and antioxidant activities. As the demand for the alkaloid is significantly high, metabolic engineering approaches are being tried to increase its production in both homologous and heterologous systems. The metabolic engineering approach requires knowledge of the metabolic regulation of the alkaloid. For understanding the metabolic regulation, fluxomic analysis is important as it helps in understanding the flux of the alkaloid through the complicated metabolic pathway. The present study was conducted to analyse the flux analysis of the ajmalicine biosynthesis, using a genetically encoded Fluorescent Resonance Energy Transfer FRET-based nanosensor for ajmalicine (FLIP-Ajn). Here, we have silenced six important genes of terpenoid indole alkaloid (TIA), na... [more]

July 17, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: biomass hydrogenation, central composite design (CCD), empty fruit bunches (EFB), ethylene glycol (EG), response surface methodology (RSM)
Statistical-based study using response surface methodology (RSM) was conducted to study the effects of process parameters towards biomass hydrogenation. Using Malaysian oil palm empty fruit bunches (EFB) fibres as feedstock, the central composite design (CCD) technique was employed and 18 runs were generated by CCD when four parameters (mass ratio of binary catalyst, hydrogen pressure, temperature and mass ratio of catalyst to feedstock) were varied with two center points to determine the effects of process parameters and eventually to get optimum ethylene glycol (EG) yield. RSM with quadratic function was generated for biomass hydrogenation, indicating all factors except temperature, were important in determining EG yield. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed a high coefficient of determination (R2) value of >0.98, ensuring a satisfactory prediction of the quadratic model with experimental data. The quadratic model suggested the optimum EG yield should be >25 wt.% and the EG yield resu... [more]

July 17, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: dynamic optimization, fed-batch process, nosiheptide, pharmaceutical manufacturing
Nosiheptide is a sulfur-containing peptide antibiotic, showing exceptional activity against critical pathogens such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) with livestock applications that can be synthesized via fed-batch fermentation. A simplified mechanistic fed-batch fermentation model for nosiheptide production considers temperature- and pH-dependence of biomass growth, substrate consumption, nosiheptide production and oxygen mass transfer into the broth. Herein, we perform dynamic simulation over a broad range of possible feeding policies to understand and visualize the region of attainable reactor performances. We then formulate a dynamic optimization problem for maximization of nosiheptide production for different constraints of batch duration and operability limits. A direct method for dynamic optimization (simultaneous strategy) is performed in each case to compute the optimal control trajectories. Orthogonal polynomials... [more]

July 17, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: advanced exergy analysis, Exergy, organic Rankine cycle, regenerative cycle
Three types of organic Rankine cycles (ORCs): basic ORC (BORC), ORC with single regeneration (SRORC) and ORC with double regeneration (DRORC) under the same heat source have been simulated in this study. In the following, the energy and exergy analysis and the advanced exergy analysis of these three cycles have been performed and compared. With a conventional exergy analysis, researchers can just evaluate the performance of components separately to find the one with the highest amount of exergy destruction. Advanced analysis divides the exergy destruction rate into unavoidable and avoidable, as well as endogenous and exogenous, parts. This helps designers find more data about the effect of each component on other components and the real potential of each component to improve its efficiency. The results of the advanced exergy analysis illustrate that regenerative ORCs have high potential for reducing irreversibilities compared with BORC. Total exergy destruction rates of 4.13 kW (47%) a... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: artificial electric field algorithm, fine-grained elitism selection, multi-objective optimization problems, recombination operator, shift-based density estimation, strength Pareto
Real-world problems such as scientific, engineering, mechanical, etc., are multi-objective optimization problems. In order to achieve an optimum solution to such problems, multi-objective optimization algorithms are used. A solution to a multi-objective problem is to explore a set of candidate solutions, each of which satisfies the required objective without any other solution dominating it. In this paper, a population-based metaheuristic algorithm called an artificial electric field algorithm (AEFA) is proposed to deal with multi-objective optimization problems. The proposed algorithm utilizes the concepts of strength Pareto for fitness assignment and the fine-grained elitism selection mechanism to maintain population diversity. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm utilizes the shift-based density estimation approach integrated with strength Pareto for density estimation, and it implements bounded exponential crossover (BEX) and polynomial mutation operator (PMO) to avoid solutions tra... In conditional microbial screening, a limited number of candidate strains are tested at different conditions searching for the optimal operation strategy in production (e.g., temperature and pH shifts, media composition as well as feeding and induction strategies). To achieve this, cultivation volumes of >10 mL and advanced control schemes are required to allow appropriate sampling and analyses. Operations become even more complex when the analytical methods are integrated into the robot facility. Among other multivariate data analysis methods, principal component analysis (PCA) techniques have especially gained popularity in high throughput screening. However, an important issue specific to high throughput bioprocess development is the lack of so-called golden batches that could be used as a basis for multivariate analysis. In this study, we establish and present a program to monitor dynamic parallel cultivations in a high throughput facility. PCA was used for process monitoring and a... [more]

July 17, 2020 (v1)
Keywords: business model, Carbon Capture, decarbonization, steel sector, utilization and storage
Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) is a combination of technologies capable of achieving large-scale reductions in carbon dioxide emissions across a variety of industries. Its application to date has however been mostly limited to the power sector, despite emissions from other industrial sectors accounting for around 30% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions. This paper explores the challenges of and requirements for implementing CCUS in non-power industrial sectors in general, and in the steel sector in particular, to identify drivers for the technology’s commercialization. To do so we first conducted a comprehensive literature review of business models of existing large-scale CCUS projects. We then collected primary qualitative data through a survey questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with global CCUS experts from industry, academia, government, and consultancies. Our results reveal that the revenue model is the most critical element to building successful CCUS... [more]

Two-dimensional layered nanomaterial Ti3C2TX (a member of the MXene family) was used to immobilise enzyme sarcosine oxidase to fabricate a nanostructured biosensor. The device was applied for detection of sarcosine, a potential prostate cancer biomarker, in urine for the first time. The morphology and structures of MXene have been characterised by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical measurements, SEM and AFM analysis revealed that MXene interfaced with chitosan is an excellent support for enzyme immobilisation to fabricate a sensitive biosensor exhibiting a low detection limit of 18 nM and a linear range up to 7.8 µM. The proposed biosensing method also provides a short response time of 2 s and high recovery index of 102.6% for detection of sarcosine spiked into urine sample in a clinically relevant range.

This paper focuses on the numerical modeling of the effect of the height of a combustion chamber on the development of a reference calorimeter whose objective is to measure the calorific value of natural gas. The impacts of temperature, velocity, and mass fraction on the exhaust gases were evaluated by varying the height of the combustion chamber. The eddy dissipation concept (EDC) approach was used to model combustion with two different chemical kinetic mechanisms: one with three steps, called the three-step mechanism defined by default in the software used, and second skeletal model, which consists of 41 steps, through the ChemKin-import file with 16 species. The main result of this study is the selection of a combustion chamber height for the reference calorimeter that produces the best performance in the combustion process, which is 70 mm, as well as the main differences in using a three-step mechanism and a skeletal model to simulate an oxy-fuel combustion reaction.

The reverse osmosis (RO) process is one of the best desalination methods, using membranes to reject several impurities from seawater and brackish water. To systematically perceive the transport phenomena of solvent and solutes via the membrane texture, several mathematical models have been developed. To date, a large number of simulation and optimisation studies have been achieved to gauge the influence of control variables on the performance indexes, to adjust the key variables at optimum values, and to realise the optimum production indexes. This paper delivers an intensive review of the successful models of the RO process and both simulation and optimisation studies carried out on the basis of the models developed. In general, this paper investigates the scope and limitations of the RO process, as well as proving the maturity of the associated perspective methodologies.
