Keywords: EBSILON, heat integration, HRSG, IGCC, Polygeneration, Simulation
Efficient and flexible operation is essential for competitiveness in the energy market. However, the CO2 emissions of conventional power plants have become an increasingly significant environmental dilemma. In this study, the optimization of a steam power process of an IGCC was carried out, which improved the overall performance of the plant. CCPP with a subcritical HRSG was modelled using EBSILON Professional. The numerical results of the model were validated by measurements for three different load cases (100, 80, and 60%). The results are in agreement with the measured data, with deviations of less than 5% for each case. Based on the model validation, the model was modified for the use of syngas as feed and the integration of heat into an IGCC process. The integration was optimized with respect to the performance of the CCPP by varying the extraction points, adjusting the steam parameters of the extractions and modifying the steam cycle. For the 100% load case, a steam turbine power... [more]

The article represents results of a physical simulation of incomplete upward leader discharges induced on air transmission lines’ elements, using charged artificial thunderstorm cells of negative polarity. The influence of such discharges on closely located model sensors (both of rod and elongated types) of digital monitoring systems, as well as on the models of receiver-transmission systems of local data collection (antennas), was determined. Effect of heterogeneity of electromagnetic field caused by incomplete upward discharges on frequency specter of signals generated on sensors and antennas was estimated. Wavelet analysis was carried out to determine the basic frequency diapasons of such signals. Based on experimental data obtained, suppositions about the extent of influence of nearby incomplete leader discharges on the functioning of currently used systems of transmission lines’ monitoring were made.

Keywords: circulating fluidized bed, CO methanation, heat transfer, Simulation
The production of synthetic natural gas (SNG) via methanation has been demonstrated by experiments in bench scale bubbling fluidized bed reactors. In the current work, we focus on the scale-up of the methanation reactor, and a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) is designed with variable diameter according to the characteristic of methanation. The critical issue is the removal of reaction heat during the strongly exothermic process of the methanation. As a result, an interconnected bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) is utilized and connected with the reactor in order to cool the particles and to maintain system temperature. A 3D model is built, and the influences of operating temperature on H2, CO conversion and CH4 yield are evaluated by numerical simulations. The instantaneous and time-averaged flow behaviors are obtained and analyzed. It turns out that the products with high concentrations of CH4 are received at the CFB reactor outlet. The temperature of the system is kept under control by us... [more]

Keywords: actual measurement, passive ventilation, residential house, Simulation, solar air heater, ventilation load
In this paper, the authors examined the technology to maximize the use of renewable energy. Passive ventilation systems are expected to reduce the energy consumption of the fan and the maintenance burden. In addition, the wall-mounted solar air heater can supply thermal energy without using any energy at all. Therefore, this paper presents a “passive ventilation system with a solar air heater” that combines a passive ventilation system with the solar air heater to preheat the air. This system can reduce the ventilation load. To evaluate the solar air heater performance in a real environment, we developed a simulation for calculating the heat collection capacity of the solar air heater, and then the system was implemented in a real building for verification. The simulation performs hourly unsteady calculations, allowing for accurate evaluation of the annual simulation. Based on the measurement results, the effects of heating load reduction and prediction methods are presented. The solar... [more]

Keywords: extension distance, oil feed rate, Simulation, tiny oil ignition burner, wall overheating
To solve the overheating problem of tiny oil ignition burners’ walls during the firing-up process in a 330 MWe tangentially pulverized coal-fired boiler, a numerical model of a tiny oil ignition burner was carefully built considering combustion, gas−solid flow, and heat transfer. Then, the burner location and oil feed rate were optimized based on the model to prevent the burner’s walls from overheating. The effects of the oil gun extension distance (100, 200, 300, 400, 500 mm) and oil feed rate (160, 140, 120, 100, 80, 70, 60 kg/h) on coal ignition performance and burner wall temperature were carefully investigated. The simulation results showed good agreement with the measured results. The results indicated that decreasing the oil gun distance within the burner diminished the flame length of the co-combustion of oil and pulverized coal, thus lowering the burner wall temperature. Decreasing the oil feed rate appropriately could also reduce the burner wall temperature without influencin... [more]

Keywords: adiabatic heat, enthalpy, mathematical modeling, reaction rate, Simulation, urea stabilization
Urea is the final product of protein metabolism in mammals and can be found in different biological fluids. Use of mammalian urine in agricultural production as organic fertilizer requires safe handling to avoid the formation of ammonia that will decrease the fertilizer value due to the loss of nitrogen. Safe handling is also required to minimize the decomposition of urea into condensed products such as biuret and cyanuric acid, which will also have a negative impact on the potential sustainable production of crops and sanitation technologies. The study of thermodynamics and reaction kinetics of urea stabilization plays a key role in understanding the conditions under which undesirable compounds and impurities in urea-based fertilizers and urea-based selective catalytic reduction systems are formed. For this reason, we studied the reaction of urea in acid media to achieve urea stabilization by modeling the reaction of urea with sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid, and estimating the reac... [more]

Keywords: ARIMA, electricity load, forecasting, model identification, robustness, Simulation, tolerance to noise
The paper addresses the problem of insufficient knowledge on the impact of noise on the auto-regressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model identification. The work offers a simulation-based solution to the analysis of the tolerance to noise of ARIMA models in electrical load forecasting. In the study, an idealized ARIMA model obtained from real load data of the Polish power system was disturbed by noise of different levels. The model was then re-identified, its parameters were estimated, and new forecasts were calculated. The experiment allowed us to evaluate the robustness of ARIMA models to noise in their ability to predict electrical load time series. It could be concluded that the reaction of the ARIMA model to random disturbances of the modeled time series was relatively weak. The limiting noise level at which the forecasting ability of the model collapsed was determined. The results highlight the key role of the data preprocessing stage in data mining and learning. They cont... [more]

When progressing from the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) to the Demonstration Fusion Reactor (DEMO), a system for transferring plasma heat exhaust to a power conversion system is necessary for the so-called Balance of Plant (BOP). During the preconceptual phase of the EU-DEMO project, different BOP concepts were investigated in order to identify the main requirements and feasible architectures to achieve that goal in the most efficient way. This paper comprises the investigations performed during the DEMO preconceptual design phase (p-CDP) and compares the different variants. The main aspect was focused on the helium-cooled pebble bed (HCPB) breeding blanket (BB) concept. After all assessments were performed, the indirect coupled design (ICD) was chosen as the reference configuration for the DEMO HCPB BOP for further development and optimization. The ICD provides decoupling using a molten salt storage loop, which accumulates thermal power during plasma pulses t... [more]

Keywords: adhesive strength, de-icing, Simulation, ultrasonic vibration, wind power, wind turbine
In cold and humid regions, ice accretion sometimes develops on the blades of wind turbines. Blade icing reduces the power generation of the wind turbine and affects the safe operation of the wind farm. For this paper, ultrasonic micro-vibration was researched as an effective de-icing method to remove ice from the wind turbine blade surface and improve the efficiency of wind turbine power generation. A blade segment with NACA0018 airfoil and the hollow structure at the leading edge was designed. The modal analysis of the blade was simulated by ANSYS, and the de-icing vibration mode was selected. Based on the simulation results, the blade segment sample with PZT patches was machined, and its natural frequencies were measured with an impedance analyzer. A return-flow icing wind tunnel system, and a device used to measure the adhesive strength of ice covering the airfoil blade, were designed and manufactured. The experiments on the adhesive strength of the ice were carried out under the ex... [more]

Keywords: heat removal, immersed tubes, methanation, Simulation
CO methanation is an exothermic process, and heat removal is an essential issue for the methanation reactor. Numerical studies were carried out to investigate the performance of a 3D fluidized bed methanation reactor with immersed cooling tubes. The simulations were carried out in the frame of the Euler−Euler model to analyze the performance of the reactor. The influences of operating temperatures were studied to understand the reaction characteristics. The temperature increases rapidly neared the inlet due to the reactions. The immersed tubes were effective at removing the reaction heat. The chemical equilibrium state was achieved with an operating temperature of 682 K for the case with immersed tubes. Different control mechanisms can be found during the process of increasing and decreasing the temperature. The reaction kinetic is the dominate factor for the cases with lower temperatures, while the chemical equilibrium will play a more important role at high temperature conditions. Th... [more]

Keywords: contactor, customizable, fuse, Modelling, power distribution system, Simulation, thermal magnetic circuit breaker
Fused contactors and thermal magnetic circuit breakers are commonly applied protective devices in power distribution systems to protect the circuits when short-circuit faults occur. A power distribution system may contain various makes and models of protective devices, as a result, customizable simulation models for protective devices are demanded to effectively conduct system-level reliable analyses. To build the models, thermal energy-based data analysis methodologies are first applied to the protective devices’ physical properties, based on the manufacturer’s time/current data sheet. The models are further enhanced by integrating probability tools to simulate uncertainties in real-world application facts, for example, fortuity, variance, and failure rate. The customizable models are expected to aid the system-level reliability analysis, especially for the microgrid power systems.

Renewable energy sources are becoming a greater component of the electrical mix, while being significantly more volatile than conventional energy sources. As a result, net stability and availability pose significant challenges. Energy-intensive processes, such as chlor-alkali electrolysis, can potentially adjust their consumption to the available power, which is known as demand side management or demand response. In this study, a dynamic model of a chlor-alkali membrane cell is developed to assess the flexible potential of the membrane cell. Several improvements to previously published models were made, making the model more representative of state-of-the-art CA plants. By coupling the model with a wind power profile, the current and potential level over the course of a day was simulated. The simulation results show that the required ramp rates are within the regular operating possibilities of the plant for most of the time and that the electrolyte concentrations in the cell can be kep... Keywords: automated driving, calibration method, ground truth, reference measurement, Simulation, virtual validation
In the course of the development of automated driving, there has been increasing interest in obtaining ground truth information from sensor recordings and transferring road traffic scenarios to simulations. The quality of the “ground truth” annotation is dictated by its accuracy. This paper presents a method for calibrating the accuracy of ground truth in practical applications in the automotive context. With an exemplary measurement device, we show that the proclaimed accuracy of the device is not always reached. However, test repetitions show deviations, resulting in non-uniform reliability and limited trustworthiness of the reference measurement. A similar result can be observed when reproducing the trajectory in the simulation environment: the exact reproduction of the driven trajectory does not always succeed in the simulation environment shown as an example because deviations occur. This is particularly relevant for making sensor-specific features such as material reflectivities... [more]

Changes in the elastic characteristics of the railway subgrade have been determined using nonstop long-term (more than 50 days) train passage seismic observations. We examined the records of the broadband sensitive seismometer TC-120s in the low-frequency band (below 0.1 Hz) to obtain the subgrade response to various train passages and its relaxation after unloading. Analytical models of subgrade deformation by the train are proposed. When comparing models in the experiment, we showed that a lowpass filter (below 0.1 Hz) provides waveforms with parameters determined by the deformation properties of the soil. We carried out statistical processing of 1600 train seismic records and determined parameters characterizing the subgrade reaction to the vibration effects created by trains in the ultra-low-frequency range. Therefore, we can use these parameters to monitor after daily averaging and weekly smoothing. When observing the spring thawing of the soil, we considered the sensitivity of se... [more]

The concept of hybrid control has been introduced, in which the analog implementation of the control algorithm is combined with a digital algorithm for determining the PWM duty cycle. Single-loop PD and PID control systems are compared to a double-loop architecture with additional capacitor current sensing for both digital and hybrid controller realizations. The performance is measured as the THD value under resistor-capacitor rectifier load. It has been shown that a properly constructed continuous-time model of a digital controller with a PWM power converter behaves like the actual discrete-time system, which allows for a simple controller analysis and design. The role of a PWM type for capacitor current feedback is emphasized. The simulation models of a real inverter are presented, which are used to tune the controllers and to evaluate the control performance for both rectifier and abruptly changing resistive load. The obtained solutions achieve the THD values comparable to the VSI w... [more]

Air-to-water heat pumps (HPs) are widely installed in new buildings; however, they face performance degradation with high temperature emission systems, which is typical of existing buildings, or during domestic hot water (DHW) production. Hybrid systems (HSs), composed by air-to-water HPs and gas-fired boilers, can mitigate these issues by increasing the overall system efficiency. HS performance is strictly dependent on the configuration and control management of the system itself. Moreover, the building and heating plant also have a strong influence. This study presents an overview of the application of HSs that considers both space heating (SH) and DHW production, by comparing the primary energy (PE) consumption obtained by dynamic simulations. Different climates, building typologies, and DHW withdrawal profiles are used to extend the results’ validity. Additionally, several HS control strategies were implemented and compared. Keywords: large elevation difference pipe, oil transmission pipeline, Simulation, two-phase flow
Oil pipeline construction and operation in mountainous areas have increased in southwestern China, with oil consumption increasing. Such liquid pipelines laid in mountainous areas continuously undulate along the terrain, resulting in many large elevation difference pipe segments. Serious gas block problems often occur during the commissioning process of these pipelines due to the gas/air accumulation at the high point of the pipe, which causes pipeline overpressure and vibration, and even safety accidents such as bursting pipes. To solve this problem, the gas−liquid replacement model and its numerical solution are established with consideration of the initial gas accumulation formation and the gas segment compression processes in a U-shaped pipe during the initial start-up operation. Additionally, considering the interactions of the gas-phase transfer in the continuous U-shaped pipe, and the influence of the length, inclination angle, and backpressure on the air vent process, the gas m...
