March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: building renovation, district heating, dynamic conditions, Modelica language, Optimization
The European and national regulations in the decarbonisation path towards 2050 promote district heating in achieving the goals of efficiency, energy sustainability, use of renewables, and reduction of fossil fuel use. Improved management and optimisation, use of RES, and waste heat/cold sources decrease the overall demand for primary energy, a condition that is further supported by building renovations and new construction of under (almost) zero energy buildings, with a foreseeable decrease in the temperature of domestic heating systems. Models for the simulation of efficient thermal networks were implemented and described in this paper, together with results from a real case study in Italy, i.e., University Campus of Parma. Activities include the creation and validation of calculation codes and specific models in the Modelica language (Dymola software), aimed at investigating stationary regimes and dynamic behaviour as well. An indirect heat exchange substation was coupled with a resi... [more]

Keywords: Biofuels, calcium, Ethanol, Fermentation, Mucor circinelloides, Optimization, xylitol, xylose, zinc
Xylose is the second most abundant monomeric sugar on earth. Nevertheless, metabolizing xylose into ethanol is a complex process due to several biochemical reactions. Some microorganisms of the genus Mucor are suitable for this bioprocess. Using metal ions, such as zinc and calcium, allows some fungal species to increase their ethanol yield. In this work, the wild strain Mucor spp. (C1502) was molecularly identified via internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing. Secondly, an optimization using response surface methodology (RSM) with a central composite experimental design (CCD) was carried out. The independent variables (X) were ZnSO4·7H2O (X1, 0.0−1.5 g/L) and CaCl2 (X2, 0.0−2.5 g/L) concentration in the fermentation broth in order to demonstrate the effect of these ions, xylose was used as the only carbon source. The dependent variables (Y) measured were ethanol yield (Y1, g ethanol/g xylose) and xylitol yield (Y2, g xylitol/g xylose). The identified strain, Mucor circinelloides,... [more]

Keywords: energy system modeling, offshore grid, Optimization, sector coupling, sustainability transition
Offshore grids can play key roles in the transition of energy systems toward sustainability. Although they require extensive infrastructure investments, they allow for the exploitation of additional resources and may be important in providing for part of the increasing electricity demands driven by sector coupling. This paper quantifies the socioeconomic value of offshore grids and identifies their major drivers, performing energy system optimization in a model application of the northern−central European energy system and the North Sea offshore grid towards 2050. The increasing wake loss with the sizes of hub-connected wind farms is integrated in the modeling. We find that without sector coupling no offshore grid may develop, and that the higher the level of sector coupling, the higher the value of offshore grids. Therefore, it can be strongly stated that offshore grid infrastructure development should not be discussed as a separate political topic, but seen in connection to sector co... [more]

Keywords: bending strain, deep belief network (DBN), feature identification, long-distance oil and gas pipeline, Optimization
Both long-distance oil and gas pipelines often pass through areas with unstable geological conditions or natural disasters. As a result, they are prone to bending, displacement, and deformation due to the action of an external environmental loading, which poses a threat to the safe operation of pipelines. The in-line inspection method that is based on the implementation of high-precision inertial measurement units (IMU) has become the main means of pipeline bending stress-strain detection technique. However, to address the problems of the inconsistent identification, low identification efficiency, and high misjudgment rate during the application of the traditional manual identification methods, a feature identification approach for the in-line inspected pipeline bending strain based on the employment of an optimized deep belief network (DBN) model is proposed in this work. In addition, our model can automatically learn features from the pipeline bending strain signals and complete clas... [more]

Keywords: APP, general lighting scheme, Genetic Algorithm, improved particle swarm algorithm, luminaire layout, Optimization, Particle Swarm Optimization
An improved mathematical model and an improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) are proposed for the complex design parameters and conflicting design goals of the indoor luminaire layout (ILL) problem. The ILL problem is formulated as a nonlinear constrained mixed-variable optimization problem that has four decision variables. For a general lighting scheme (GLS), the number and location of luminaires can be uniquely determined by optimizing four decision variables, which avoid using program loops to determine the number of luminaires. We improve the particle swarm optimization (PSO) in three aspects: (1) up-down probabilistic rounding (UDPR) method proposed to solve mixed integer, (2) improving the velocity of the best global particle, and (3) using nonlinear inertia weights with random items. The IPSO has better optimization results in an office study compared with the PSO and genetic algorithm (GA). The results are validated by DIALux simulation software, and a maximum deviation of... Keywords: DC microgrid, electric vehicle, Optimization, partial observability
Many electric vehicles (EVs) are using today’s distribution grids, and their flexibility can be highly beneficial for the grid operators. This flexibility can be best exploited by DC power networks, as they allow charging and discharging without extra power electronics and transformation losses. From the grid control perspective, algorithms for planning EV charging are necessary. This paper studies the problem of EV charging planning under limited grid capacity and extends it to the partially observable case. We demonstrate how limited information about the EV locations in a grid may disrupt the operation planning in DC grids with tight constraints. We introduce two methods to change the grid topology such that partial observability of the EV locations is resolved. The suggested models are evaluated on the IEEE 16 bus system and multiple randomly generated grids with varying capacities. The experiments show that these methods efficiently solve the partially observable EV charging plann... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: 3D transmitting coil design, Genetic Algorithm, homogeneous magnetic field, Optimization, wireless power transfer
In magnetically coupled resonant wireless power transfer (MCR-WPT) systems, the nonhomogeneous magnetic field of the transmitting coil can lead to frequency splitting phenomena and lower efficiency. In this paper, a 3D transmitting coil (TX) with a homogeneous magnetic field distribution is proposed. The proposed coil structure consists of two layers with different numbers of turns per layer, i.e., with different current distributions. To achieve a homogeneous magnetic field distribution with a high magnetic field value and a low profile of the 3D coil structure, the optimal layer placement and current distribution were optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA). The prototype of the optimized coil was fabricated, and its magnetic field distribution was measured. The measurement results agreed more than 95% with the simulation results. The measured homogeneous area was at least 12.5% larger than reported in the literature. By using a different current distribution, the profile of the 3D... [more]

Greenhouse gas emissions need to be drastically reduced to mitigate the environmental impacts caused by climate change, and to lead to a transformation of the European energy system. A model landscape consisting of four final energy consumption sector models with high spatial (NUTS-3) and temporal (hourly) resolution and the multi-energy system model ISAaR is extended and applied to investigate the transformation pathway of the European energy sector in the deep emission mitigation scenario solidEU. The solidEU scenario describes not only the techno-economic but also the socio-political contexts, and it includes the EU27 + UK, Norway, and Switzerland. The scenario analysis shows that volatile renewable energy sources (vRES) dominate the energy system in 2050. In addition, the share of flexible sector coupling technologies increases to balance electricity generation from vRES. Seasonal differences are balanced by hydrogen storage with a seasonal storage profile. The deployment rates of... [more]

Keywords: charging cost, electric vehicles, heuristic algorithm, Optimization, real-time price
The charging loads of electric vehicles (EVs) at residential premises are controlled through a tariff system based on fixed timing. The conventional tariff system presents the herding issue, such as with many connected EVs, all of them are directed to charge during the same off-peak period, which results in overloading the power grid and high charging costs. Besides, the random nature of EV users restricts them from following fixed charging times. Consequently, the real-time pricing scenarios are natural and can support optimizing the charging load and cost for EV users. This paper aims to develop charging cost optimization algorithm (CCOA) for residential charging of EVs. The proposed CCOA coordinates the charging of EVs by heuristically learning the real-time price pattern and the EV’s information, such as the battery size, current state-of-charge, and arrival & departure times. In contrast to the holistic price, the CCOA determines a threshold price value for each arrival and depart... [more]

Architectural space layout has proven to be influential on building energy performance. However, the relationship between different space layouts and their consequent energy demands has not yet been systematically studied. This study thoroughly investigates such a relationship. In order to do so, a computational method was developed, which includes a method to generate space layouts featuring energy-related variables and an assessment method for energy demand. Additionally, a design of experiments was performed, and its results were used to analyse the relationship between space layouts and energy demands. In order to identify their relationship, four types of design indicators of space layout were proposed, both for the overall layout and for each function. Finally, several optimisations were performed to minimise heating, cooling and lighting demands. The optimisation results showed that the maximum reduction between different layouts was up to 54% for lighting demand, 51% for heatin... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: magnetic circuit, Optimization, synchronous reluctance, torque performances
In this paper, the 12-slot/4-pole (12/4) synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) with concentrated windings is proposed for low-cost hybrid vehicles. The non-linear magnetic equivalent circuit (MEC) model of the 12/4 SynRM is built to obtain the main electromagnetic characteristics such as coil flux, inductances, torque, etc. The magnetic saturation is also counted in by the MEC. Results calculated by MEC are validated by 2D finite element analysis (FEA). Then, aiming at larger average torque, lower torque ripple and lower total harmonic distortion (THD) in phase voltage, the parameter optimization method of the SynRM is proposed based on the Taguchi method and the MEC model. The proposed Taguchi-MEC method enables a fast optimization with satisfactory accuracy. Finally, the motor prototype is manufactured, and experimental validations are carried out.

The penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs) is increasing in modern power systems. However, the uncertainties of RESs pose challenges to distribution system operations, such as RES curtailment. Demand response (DR) and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are flexible countermeasures for distribution-system operators. In this context, this study proposes an optimization model that considers DR and BESSs and develops a simulation analysis platform representing a medium-sized distribution system with high penetration of RESs. First, BESSs and DR were employed to minimize the total expenses of the distribution system operation, where the BESS model excluding binary state variables was adopted. Second, a simulation platform based on a modified IEEE 123 bus system was developed via MATLAB/Simulink for day-ahead scheduling analysis of the distribution system with a high penetration of RESs. The simulation results indicate the positive effects of DR implementation, BESS deployment, a... [more]

Phasor measurement unit (PMU) technology is a need of the power system due to its better resolution than conventional estimation devices used for wide-area monitoring. PMUs can provide synchronized phasor and magnitude of voltage and current measurements for state estimation of the power system to prevent blackouts. The drawbacks of a PMU are the high cost of the device and its installation. The main aspect of using PMUs in electrical networks is the property to observe the adjacent buses, thereby making it possible to observe the system with fewer PMUs than the number of buses through their optimal placement. In the last two decades, exhaustive research has been done on this issue. Considering the importance of this field, a comprehensive review of the progress achieved until now is carried out and the limitations of existing reviews in the literature are highlighted. This paper can be seen as a major attempt to provide an up-to-date review of the research work carried out in this all... [more]

Keywords: energy management, Markov Decision Process (MDP), Optimization
There has been substantial research on Building Energy Management Systems. Most of the work has focused more on the management scheme and less on the specific structure or the nature of activities within each building. However, recently some attention is being paid to these specifics, and this paper is one of such efforts, where we consider the structure and nature of activities in the building for developing an energy management system custom designed for a bank branch where customers may arrive randomly based on a known probability distribution. Specifically, this paper presents a model for generating an optimal control policy to manage the electrical energy of a commercial bank building. A Markov Decision Process (MDP) model is proposed. The MDP model is solved for the calculation of an optimal control policy using stochastic dynamic programming. The advantage of the proposed model is that it can incorporate uncertainty involved in the problem. Another advantage is that the output c... [more]

This paper addresses the problem of Distribution Systems Reconfiguration (DSR), which consists of finding the state of switching devices (open or closed) in a given distribution network, aiming to minimize active power loses. DSR is modeled as a mixed-integer non-linear optimization problem, in which the integer variables represent the state of the switches, and the continuous variables represent the power flowing through the branches. Given the multi-modal and non-convex nature of the problem, an improved harmony search (IHS) algorithm is proposed to solve the DSR problem. The main novelty of this approach is the inclusion of a Path Relinking phase which accelerates convergence of the DSR problem. Several tests were carried out in four benchmark distribution systems, evidencing the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed approach.
