Subject: Optimization
Keywords: bilinear problems, branch and cut, convex problems, decomposition, Generalized Benders Decomposition, hierarchical optimization, integer programming, mixed-integer nonlinear programming, Optimization
The paper presents the Generalized Benders Decomposition (GBD) method, which is now one of the basic approaches to solve big mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problems. It concentrates on the basic formulation with convex objectives and constraints functions. Apart from the classical projection and representation theorems, a unified formulation of the master problem with nonlinear and linear cuts will be given. For the latter case the most effective and, at the same time, easy to implement computational algorithms will be pointed out.

Propylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate (PGMEA) is a commonly used solvent in the rapidly developing semiconductor industry. Ultra-high purity PGMEA is required for this ultra-precision industry and to satisfy the current strict waste management regulations. The traditional PGMEA production process consumes considerable energy and has a high production cost. In this study, a novel heat integrated and intensified design, which applies a dividing wall column, reactive distillation, and pressure swing techniques, was proposed for improving the energy efficiency and reducing the cost of PGMEA production. Heat integration was applied to maximize the heat recovery of the process. All processes were simulated using the commercial simulator Aspen Plus V11. The economic and environmental parameters of the process alternative were assessed for a fair comparison with the conventional process. The results showed that heat integration of the optimal pressure swing-based reactive distillation and... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: crew rostering problem, e-mobility, electric garbage trucks, electric vehicle, mix integer programming, Optimization, solid waste collection, solid waste management, vehicle routing problem
Nowadays, robust and efficient solid waste collection is crucial to motivate citizens to participate in the circular economy by sorting recyclable solid waste. Vocational vehicles, including garbage trucks, contribute significantly to CO2 emissions; therefore, it is strongly recommended, and in the European Union it is mandatory, to replace conventional-fuel-based garbage trucks with electric ones. For providing sustainable and energy-efficient solid waste collection with a heterogeneous fleet, in-depth mathematical computations are needed to support solving complex decision-making problems, including crew rostering and vehicle routing, because the distance and capacity of electric garbage trucks differ from conventional-fuel-based ones. However, the literature on solid waste collection using electric garbage trucks is still relatively scarce. The main contribution of this paper is developing an optimization problem for balancing travel distance assigned to each garbage truck of a hete... [more]

We present a method to turn the results of model-based optimisations into resilient and comprehensible control strategies. Our approach is to define priority lists for all available technologies in a district energy system. Using linear discriminant analysis and the results of the optimisations, these are then assigned to discrete time steps using a set of possible steering parameters. In contrast to the model-based optimisations, the deduced control strategies do not need predictions or even perfect foresight but solely rely on data about the present. The case study using priority lists presents results in terms of emissions and prices that are only about 5% off the linear optimum. Considering that the priority lists only need information about the present, the results of the control strategies obtained using the proposed method can be considered competitive.

The power system responsiveness may be improved by determining the ideal size of each component and performing a reliability analysis. This study evaluated the design and optimization of an islanded hybrid microgrid system with multiple dispatch algorithms. As the penetration of renewable power increases in microgrids, the importance and influence of efficient design and operation of islanded hybrid microgrids grow. The Kangaroo Island in South Australia served as the study’s test microgrid. The sizing of the Kangaroo Island hybrid microgrid system, which includes solar PV, wind, a diesel engine, and battery storage, was adjusted for four dispatch schemes. In this study, the following dispatch strategies were used: (i) load following, (ii) cycle charging, (iii) generator order, and (iv) combination dispatch. The CO2 emissions, net present cost (NPC), and energy cost of the islanded microgrid were all optimized (COE). The HOMER microgrid software platform was used to build all four disp... [more]

In recent decades, building design and operation have been an important field of study, due to the significant share of buildings in global primary energy consumption and the time that most people spend indoors. As such, multiple studies focus on aspects of building energy consumption and occupant comfort optimization. The scientific community has discerned the importance of operation optimization through retrofitting actions for on-site building energy systems, achieved by the use of simulation techniques, surrogate modeling, as well as the guidance of existing building performance and indoor occupancy standards. However, more knowledge should be attained on the matter of whether this methodology can be extended towards the early stages of thermal system and/or building design. To this end, the present study provides a building thermal system design optimization methodology. A data set of minimum thermal system power, for a typical range of building characteristics, is generated, acco... [more]

Apart from numerous technical challenges, the transition towards a carbon-neutral energy supply is greatly hindered by limited economic feasibility of renewable energy sources. This results in their slow and bounded penetration in both commercial and residential sectors that are responsible for over 40% of final energy consumption. This paper aims to demonstrate that combined application of sophisticated planning methodologies at building-level and presents incentive mechanisms for renewables that can result in prosumers, featuring hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES), with economic performance comparable to that of conventional energy systems. The presented research enhances existing planning methodologies by integrating appliance-level demand side management into the decision process and investigates its effect on the planning problem. Moreover, the proposed methodology features an innovative and holistic approach that simultaneously assess electrical and thermal domain in both an... [more]

With the global net-zero strategy implementation, decarbonisation of transport by massive deployment of electric vehicles (EVs) has been considered to be an essential solution. However, charging EVs and integration into electricity grids is going to be a fundamental challenge to future electricity systems. Hence, in this situation, how to effectively deploy massive numbers of EVs, and in the meantime what can be developed to deliver vehicle-to-grid (V2G) services, become a fundamental yet interesting tech-economical issues. Furthermore, uncertainty in lack of vehicle availability and EV battery degradation could lead to revenue loss when using EVs as ancillary services aggregators. With such considerations, this paper presents a new optimised V2G aggregator scheduling service that has taken into consideration of a number of risks, including EV availability and battery degradation through conditional value-at-risk. This article introduces an application of the recently developed hunger games search (HGS) optimization algorithm. The HGS is combined with chaotic maps to propose a new Chaotic Hunger Games search (CHGS). It is applied to solve the optimal power flow (OPF) problem. The OPF is solved to minimize the generation costs while satisfying the systems’ constraints. Moreover, the article presents optimal siting for mixed renewable energy sources, photovoltaics, and wind farms. Furthermore, the effect of adding renewable energy sources on the overall generation costs value is investigated. The exploration field of the optimization problem is the active output power of each generator in each studied system. The CHGS also obtains the best candidate design variables, which corresponds to the minimum possible cost function value. The robustness of the introduced CHGS algorithm is verified by performing the simulation 20 independent times for two standard IEEE systems—IEEE 57-bus and 118-bus systems... [more]

Groundwater-filled boreholes are a common solution in Scandinavian installations of ground source heat pumps (GSHP) due to the particular hydro-geological conditions with existing bedrock, and groundwater levels close to the surface. Different studies have highlighted the advantage of water-filled boreholes compared with their grouted counterparts since the natural convection of water within the borehole tends to decrease the effective thermal resistance Rb*. In this study, several methods are proposed for the evaluation and modeling of the effective thermal resistance of groundwater-filled boreholes. They are based on distributed temperature sensing (DTS) measurements of six representative boreholes within the irregular 74-single-U 300 m-deep borehole field of Aalto New Campus Complex (ANCC). These methods are compared with the recently developed correlations for groundwater-filled boreholes, which are implemented within the python-based simulation toolbox Pygfunction. The results fro... Turbine as a key power unit is vital to the novel supercritical carbon dioxide cycle (sCO2-BC). At the same time, the turbine design and optimization process for the sCO2-BC is complicated, and its relevant investigations are still absent in the literature due to the behavior of supercritical fluid in the vicinity of the critical point. In this regard, the current study entails a multifaceted approach for designing and optimizing a radial turbine system for an 8 MW sCO2 power cycle. Initially, a base design of the turbine is calculated utilizing an in-house radial turbine design and analysis code (RTDC), where sharp variations in the properties of CO2 are implemented by coupling the code with NIST’s Refprop. Later, 600 variants of the base geometry of the turbine are constructed by changing the selected turbine design geometric parameters, i.e., shroud ratio (rs4r3), hub ratio (rs4r3), speed ratio (νs) and inlet flow angle (α3) and are investigated numerically through 3D-RANS simulatio... Climate and energy policies are tools used to steer the development of a sustainable economy supplied by equally sustainable energy systems. End-users should plan their investments accounting for future policies, such as incentives for system-oriented consumption, emission prices and hydrogen economy, to ensure long-term competitiveness. In this work, the utilization of variable renewable energy and flexibility potentials in a case study of an aggregate industry is investigated. An energy concept considering PV and battery expansion, flexible production, fuel cell electric trucks (FCEV) and hydrogen production is proposed, and analysed under expected techno-economic conditions and policies of 2030 using an energy system optimization model. Under this concept, total costs and emissions are reduced by 14% and 70%, respectively, compared to the business-as-usual system. The main benefit of PV investment is the lowered electricity procurement. Flexibility from schedulable manufacturing and... [more]

This paper studies energy consumption management of seawater Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination plants to maintain and enhance the Voltage Stability (VS) of Power Systems (PS) with Photovoltaic (PV) plant integration. We proposed a voltage-based management algorithm to determine the maximum power consumption for RO plants. The algorithm uses power flow study to determine the RO plant power consumption allowed within the voltage-permissible limits, considering the RO process constraints in order to maintain the desired fresh water supply. Three cases were studied for the proposed RO plant: typical operation with constant power consumption, controlled operation using ON/OFF scheduling of the High-Pressure Pumps (HPPs) and controlled operation using Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) control. A modified IEEE 30-bus system with a variable load was used as a case study with integration of three PV plants of 75 MWp total power capacity. Keywords: deep-bar effect, equivalent circuits, finite element analysis, induction motors, optimisation
The various measurement procedures for determination of electromagnetic parameters for the induction motor (IM) equivalent circuits including the rotor deep-bar effect were proposed in the literature. One of them is the procedure based on the load curve test (LCT). Since the execution of the LCT can pose some difficulties, especially in industrial conditions, as an alternative, the finite element method (FEM) can be employed to simulate the IM operation under the LCT. In this work we developed the optimisation technique for the finite element (FE) model. This technique is performed with the use of the stator current space-vector components which determine the IM input active and reactive power consumption during no-load operation. Relying on the LCT simulation carried out with the optimised FE model the inductance frequency characteristic can be determined and then used as the reference characteristic in the electromagnetic parameter estimation for the IM equivalent circuit including t... Keywords: carbonated water, CCUS, CO2 storage, enhanced gas recovery, Optimization
CO2-based enhanced gas recovery (EGR) is an appealing method with the dual benefit of improving recovery from mature gas reservoirs and storing CO2 in the subsurface, thereby reducing net emissions. However, CO2 injection for EGR has the drawback of excessive mixing with the methane gas, therefore, reducing the quality of gas produced and leading to an early breakthrough of CO2. Although this issue has been identified as a major obstacle in CO2-based EGR, few strategies have been suggested to mitigate this problem. We propose a novel hybrid EGR method that involves the injection of a slug of carbonated water before beginning CO2 injection. While still ensuring CO2 storage, carbonated water hinders CO2-methane mixing and reduces CO2 mobility, therefore delaying breakthrough. We use reservoir simulation to assess the feasibility and benefit of the proposed method. Through a structured design of experiments (DoE) framework, we perform sensitivity analysis, uncertainty assessment, and opti... [more]

Keywords: acid fracturing, acid type, design parameters, fracture geometry, Optimization, unified fracture design
Acid fracturing simulation has been widely used to improve well performance in carbonate reservoirs. In this study, a computational method is presented to optimize acid fracturing treatments. First, fracture geometry parameters are calculated using unified fracture design methods. Then, the controllable design parameters are iterated till the fracture geometry parameters reach their optimal values. The results show higher flow rates are required to achieve optimal fracture geometry parameters with larger acid volumes. Detailed sensitivity analyses are performed on controllable and reservoir parameters. It shows that higher flow rates should be applied for fluids with lower viscosity. Straight acid reaches optimal conditions at higher flow rates and lower volumes. These conditions for retarded acids appear to be only at lower flow rates and higher volumes. The study of the acid concentration for gelled acids shows that both flow rate and volume increase as the concentration increases. F... [more]

Keywords: coasting, electric locomotive, energy saving, Optimization, railway, traction energy, train driving cycle simulation
The main goal of this work is the evaluation of the energy saving achievable in railway drive when using the coasting technique extensively, with reference to a practical case of the Italian railway network taken as an example. This technique consists in exploiting the kinetic energy accumulated by the running train whenever possible. To implement a driving style on purpose, the only driver contribution is not enough; indeed, it is necessary to provide an embedded automatic calculation control system. In the paper, an algorithm has been developed to evaluate the energy absorption of railway locomotives during the normal service and validated on a real railway line. The proposed hardware and software system could be implemented aboard the train, allowing motion data processing in real-time. Speed, time intervals and power absorption for a given path are calculated; then, the best coasting parameters are estimated to maximize the energy savings. In particular, the case study presented in... [more]

Keywords: 2D and 3D finite element analysis, 3D computational fluid dynamics, experimental test, optimal design, Optimization, wound rotor synchronous machine
In this paper, a complete methodology to design a modular brushless wound rotor synchronous machine is proposed. From a schedule of conditions and a chosen structure (with 7 phases, 7 slots and 6 poles), a non-linear and non-convex optimization problem is defined and solved using NOMAD (a derivative free local optimization code): the external volume is minimized under some constraints, which are the average torque equal to 5 Nm, the torque ripple less than 5%, the efficiency greater than 94%, and the surface temperature less than 85 °C. The constraints have to be computed using 2D-finite element simulations in order to reduce the CPU-time consumption for each NOMAD iteration. Moreover, a relaxation of this optimization problem makes it possible to provide an efficient starting point for NOMAD. Thus, a good optimal design is obtained, and it is then validated by using 3D electromagnetic and thermic numerical methods. These numerical verifications show that, inside the end-winding, the l... Renewable-powered “undergrid mini-grids” (UMGs) are instrumental for electrification in developing countries. An UMG can be installed under a—possibly unreliable— main grid to improve the local reliability or the main grid may “arrive” and connect to a previously isolated mini-grid. Minimising costs is key to reducing risks associated with UMG development. This article presents a novel market-logic strategy for the optimal operation of UMGs that can incorporate multiple types of controllable loads, customer smart curtailment based on reliability requirements, storage management, and exports to and imports from a main grid, which is subject to failure. The formulation results in a mixed-integer linear programming model (MILP) and assumes accurate predictions of the following uncertain parameters: grid spot prices, outages of the main grid, solar availability and demand profiles. An AC hybrid solar-battery-diesel UMG configuration from Nigeria is used as a case example, and numerical sim... [more]

This study focuses on optimizing a 100-W-class β-Type Stirling engine by combining the modified thermodynamic model and the variable-step simplified conjugate gradient (VSCGM) method. For the modified thermodynamic model, non-uniform pressure is directly introduced into the energy equation, so the indicated power and heat transfer rates can reach energy balance while the VSCGM is an updated version of the simplified conjugate gradient method (SCGM) with adaptive increments and step lengths to the optimization process; thus, it requires fewer iterations to reach the optimal solution than the SCGM. For the baseline case, the indicated power progressively raises from 88.2 to 210.2 W and the thermal efficiency increases from 34.8 to 46.4% before and after optimization, respectively. The study shows the VSCGM possesses robust property. All optimal results from the VSCGM are well-matched with those of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model.
