February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ITAE, LFC, multiple source power system, Optimization, PID controller
For power system engineers, automated load frequency control (LFC) for multi-area power networks has proven a difficult problem. With the addition of numerous power generation sources, the complexity of these duties becomes even more difficult. The dynamic nature of linked power networks with varied generating sources, such as gas, thermal, and hydropower plants, is compared in this research. For the study to be more accurate, frequency and tie-line power measurements are used. For precise tuning of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller gains, the Bald Eagle Sparrow search optimization (BESSO) technique was used. The BESSO algorithm was created by combining the characteristics of sparrows and bald eagles. The performance of BESSO is determined by comparing its findings to those acquired using traditional approaches. In terms of Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE), which is the most important criterion used to reduce system error, the findings presented in this study indicat... [more]

Keywords: CFD modelling, cylindrical profile, fins, geometrical parameters, optimisation, temperature profile
The efficient use of energy is a crucial goal related to the world economy, and efforts are aimed at reducing energy demand for the same quality and quantity of products and services. The drive to improve energy efficiency in the context of technological development, as well as the intensification of industrial and other processes, imposes a constant demand for more efficient heat exchange devices and systems. As devices in which the heat transfer process is crucial, heat exchangers play an essential role in many engineering and other applications. There are several generic techniques for improving the performance of thermal devices, which ultimately manifest through an increase in the heat transfer coefficient as the primary efficiency indicator. These methods include initiating or intensifying the turbulent flow of working fluids, increasing the heat exchange surface by applying specific shapes and additional elements, and using working fluids with improved thermophysical characteris... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: coloured BIPV, Optimization, Simulation
Coloured building integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) may contribute to meeting the decarbonisation targets of European and other countries. Nevertheless, their market uptake has been hindered by a lack of social acceptance, technical issues, and low economic profitability. Being able to assess in advance the influence of the coloured layers on a module’s power generation may help reduce the need for prototyping, thereby allowing optimisation of the product performance by reducing the time and costs of customised manufacturing. Therefore, this review aims at investigating the available literature on models and techniques used for assessing the influence of coloured layers on power generation in customised BIPV products. Existing models in the literature use two main approaches: (i) detailed optical modelling of the layers in the module’s stack, including coloured layers, and (ii) mathematical elaboration of the final product’s measured characteristics. Combining the two approaches can pro... [more]

Keywords: experimental validation, Modelling, optimisation, overall friction coefficient, pneumatic radial piston motor
A pneumatic radial piston motor is studied in this paper in order to establish a dynamic modelling and simulation method. As a result of using geometric parameters, the piston cylinder volume change was calculated, and the heat transfer equation, thermodynamic energy balance equation, and motion equation were combined in order to create a complete model of the piston cylinder. With the aid of compressed air, several experimental tests were conducted, and the results of rotational speed with varying inlet pressure were fed into the simulation to determine one of the critical unknown parameters, such as the overall friction coefficient of the system. For the studied piston motor, this coefficient was 0.0625 Nm. Computer simulations can be used to adjust design parameters in order to reach a higher rotation speed by using an accurate model. As a result, better efficiency and performance present several opportunities that would not be possible when running experimental tests in a lab. The... [more]

Increasing the range of electric vehicles (EVs) is possible with the help of eco-driving techniques, which are algorithms that consider internal and external factors, like performance limits and environmental conditions, such as weather. However, these constraints must include critical variables in energy consumption, such as driver preferences and external vehicle conditions. In this article, a reasonable energy-efficient non-linear model predictive control (NMPC) is built for an electric two-wheeler vehicle, considering the Paris-Brussels route with different driving profiles and driver preferences. Here, NMPC is successfully implemented in a test bed, showing how to obtain the different parameters of the optimization problem and the estimation of the energy for the closed-loop system from a practical point of view. The efficiency of the brushless DC motor (BLCD) is also included for this test bed. In addition, this document shows that the proposal increases the chance of traveling t... [more]

Finned tube heat exchangers are used in many technological applications in both civil and industrial sectors. Their large-scale use requires a design aimed at reaching high thermal efficiency as well as avoiding unnecessary waste of resources in terms of time and costs. Therefore, in the last decades, research in this area has developed considerably and numerous studies have been conducted on modeling in order to predict heat exchangers (HXs) performance and to optimize design parameters. In this paper, the main studies carried out on plate-finned tube HXs have been collected, analyzed, and summarized, classifying existing models by their scale approach (small, large, or multi-scale). In addition, the main methods of design optimization with a focus on circuitry configurations have been illustrated. Finally, future developments and research areas that need more in-depth analysis have been identified and discussed.

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, deep learning, distributed energy resources, hosting capacity, impact factors, Machine Learning, optimisation
Distribution network operators face technical and operational challenges in integrating the increasing number of distributed energy resources (DER) with the distribution network. The hosting capacity analysis quantifies the level of power quality violation on the network due to the high penetration of the DER, such as over voltage, under voltage, transformer and feeder overloading, and protection failures. Real-time monitoring of the power quality factors such as the voltage, current, angle, frequency, harmonics and overloading that would help the distribution network operators overcome the challenges created by the high penetration of the DER. In this paper, different conventional hosting capacity analysis methods have been discussed. These methods have been compared based on the network constraints, impact factors, required input data, computational efficiency, and output accuracy. The artificial intelligence approaches of the hosting capacity analysis for the real-time monitoring of... [more]

Keywords: energy modeling, energy planning, impacts, multi-criteria decision, Optimization, Sustainability
This work addresses the internalization of externalities in energy decision making and in generation expansion planning (GEP). Although the linkage between externalities and energy is well recognized, the issue of the internalization in GEP models and from a sustainability perspective is still far from being fully explored. A critical literature review is presented, including scientific articles published in the period from 2011 to 2021 and selected from scientific databases according to a set of pre-defined keywords. The literature is vast and quite heterogeneous in the models and methods used to deal with these externalities, and therefore a categorization of these studies was attempted. This categorization was based on the methods used, the geographical scope, the externalities included in the planning model and the strategies for their inclusion. As a result, it was possible to perceive that most studies tend to focus on the internalization of externalities related to CO2 and equiv... [more]

Energy consumption is increasing rapidly; hence, the energy demand cannot be fulfilled using traditional power resources only. Power systems based on renewable energy, including solar and wind, are effective and friendly for the environment. Islanded hybrid microgrid systems (IHMS) are relatively new in this industry and combine two or more sustainable sources, such as wind turbines, solar photovoltaic (PV), and other renewable alternatives, ocean, wave, and geothermal energy, etc. While sustainable, long-lasting power sources are the best choice to satisfy the growing energy demands, they are still not yet ready to be used on a large scale due to their stochastic characteristics. Furthermore, integrating these sources into the existing energy system can cause high technical difficulties, due to the stochastic nature of solar and wind in the conventional grid system and common stand-alone framework. A review of research and applications of the effective hybridization of renewable energ... [more]

The use of fossil-fueled power stations to generate electricity has had a damaging effect over the years, necessitating the need for alternative energy sources. Microgrids consisting of renewable energy source concepts have gained a lot of consideration in recent years as an alternative because they use advances in information and communication technology (ICT) to increase the quality and efficiency of services and distributed energy resources (DERs), which are environmentally friendly. Nevertheless, microgrids are constrained by the outbreaks of faults, which have an impact on their performance and necessitate dynamic energy management and optimization strategies. The application of artificial intelligence (AI) is gaining momentum as a vital key at this point. This study focuses on a comprehensive review of applications of artificial intelligence strategies on hybrid renewable microgrids for optimization, power quality enhancement, and analyses of fault outbreaks in microgrids. Keywords: converter, current ripple, four-leg, grid-connected, harmonic distortion, neutral inductor, Optimization, pulse-width modulation, switching losses, three-phase four-wire
This manuscript proposes a novel approach for determining phase and neutral-current-ripple RMS in grid-connected four-leg inverters with the neutral inductor. The harmonic pollution is determined for any arbitrary pulse width modulation (PWM) technique and a generic value of the neutral inductor. Thanks to the proposed approach, it is possible to describe the neutral inductor in a parametric way with respect to phase inductors and obtain a wide range of results, ranging from a direct neutral connection (no neutral inductor) to a conventional three-phase inverter (no fourth wire) for any value of modulation index and common mode injection. The results permit one to compare different design choices in multiple scenarios effectively. The findings were validated by numerical simulations and experimental tests employing the most popular PWM techniques, such as space vector PWM (SVPWM) and discontinuous PWM (DPWM).

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, demand response, energy management, Optimization, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Scheduling, systematic literature review
The energy transition and the resulting expansion of renewable energy resources increasingly pose a challenge to the energy system due to their volatile and intermittent nature. In this context, energy management systems are central as they coordinate energy flows and optimize them toward economic, technical, ecological, and social objectives. While numerous scientific publications study the infrastructure, optimization, and implementation of residential energy management systems, only little research exists on industrial energy management systems. However, results are not easily transferable due to differences in complexity, dependency, and load curves. Therefore, we present a systematic literature review on state-of-the-art research for residential and industrial energy management systems to identify trends, challenges, and future research directions. More specifically, we analyze the energy system infrastructure, discuss data-driven monitoring and analysis, and review the decision-m... [more]

Keywords: electromagnetic induction, Gorlov, optimisation, rainwater, renewables
Renewable energy sources are rapidly increasing in demand and importance as governments and countries around the globe begin to understand their vital role in reducing climate change. This project aimed to design and create an optimised micro-hydro turbine system for downpipes to harness the currently untapped potential energy from rainwater. Experimental methods were used to determine the magnitude of voltage output available at different rainfall intensities by simulating such flow rates on a hydraulic bench. The viability of this energy to power household appliances was then evaluated, and methods of increasing the voltage output were assessed, such as layering the turbines in a single downpipe or placing multiple downpipes around the building. The study determined that, during average rainfall in the UK, a single turbine could produce a maximum of 7.21 V of DC voltage, or 50.49 V during heavy rainfall—enough energy to power a mobile device charger or a vacuum cleaner, respectively.... In this work, we provide a smart home occupancy prediction technique based on environmental variables such as CO2, noise, and relative temperature via our machine learning method and forecasting strategy. The proposed algorithms enhance the energy management system through the optimal use of the electric heating system. The Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network is a special deep learning strategy for processing time series prediction that has shown promising prediction results in recent years. To improve the performance of the LSTM algorithm, particularly for autocorrelation prediction, we will focus on optimizing weight updates using various approaches such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The performances of the proposed methods are evaluated using real available datasets. Test results reveal that the GA and the PSO can forecast the parameters with higher prediction fidelity compared to the LSTM networks. Indeed, all experimental predictions rea... [more]

In order to obtain the calibration law of rock macro and meso parameters under three-dimensional conditions, based on the parallel bond model, starting with the basic theory of PFC and the qualitative relationship between macro and meso parameters, an orthogonal experimental scheme is designed. An improved BP algorithm is proposed, which has a function with gradient factor, adaptive Nesterov momentum method, and adaptive learning rate for the lightweight analysis of meso parameters. The sensitivity between macro and meso parameters is quantified, and the key meso parameters are screened out. Based on the lightweight model, the correlation and influence mechanisms between macro and meso parameters are analyzed. It was found that the elastic modulus increases linearly with the increase in equivalent modulus. The parallel bond stiffness ratio can inhibit the growth of the elastic modulus, and the elastic modulus decreases greatly when the stiffness is relatively high. There is a linear re... [more]

The power-sharing possibility amongst microgrids (MGs) in networked microgrids (NMGs) offers multiple profits to the NMG by employing an applicable energy management system. An efficient energy management system can provide an adequate compromise in terms of the component sizing of NMGs through MG collaboration. This paper proposes a procedure to size the component for an isolated networked hybrid microgrid. The proposed design procedure relies on the optimum operation of individual MGs. The defined Reduced Factor (RF) identifies the possible size reduction for the dispatchable components, such as diesel generators and the energy storage system of each MG. The introduced RF is based on the operating reserve evaluation obtained from the optimal operation of individual MGs and the correlation between load profiles. Eventually, the simulation and practical results of a networked hybrid MG consisting of three MGs are presented to verify the proposed component sizing procedure. The practica... [more]

Energy storage makes energy continuously available, programmable, and at power levels different from the original intensity. This study investigates the feasibility of compressed-air energy storage (CAES) systems on a small scale. In addition to the CAES systems, there are two TES (thermal energy storage) systems for the recovery of calories and frigories. The micro-CAES + TES system is designed for a single-family residential building equipped with a photovoltaic system with a nominal power of 3 kW. The system is optimized as a potential alternative to battery storage for a typical domestic photovoltaic system. The multi-objective optimization analysis is carried out with the modeFRONTIER software. Once the best configuration of the micro-CAES + TES system is identified, it is compared with electrochemical storage systems, considering costs, durability, and performance. The efficiency of CAES (8.4%) is almost one-tenth of the efficiency of the most efficient batteries on the market (7... [more]

The organic Rankine cycles (ORCs) have been used to convert low-enthalpy geothermal brine into power. Parameter optimization and working fluid selection are the main approaches to enhance geothermal ORC performance. This work uses environmentally friendly fluids, including R1224yd(Z), R1233zd(E), R1336mzz(Z), R601 and R601a, as the geothermal ORC working fluids. The evaporation temperatures of the selected fluids were optimized to maximize the cycle net power outputs. The thermodynamic characteristics are investigated with the consideration of the influence of the allowed reinjection temperature (ARIT). Among the selected fluids, R1224yd(Z) has the highest optimal evaporation temperature with the maximum turbine power output for a brine inlet temperature (BIT) higher than 120 °C, especially at a lower allowed reinjection temperature. However, the parasitic power consumption by the pumps in an ORC with R1224yd(Z) is also higher than with the other four fluids. The net power output for O... [more]

The maintenance of wireless sensor networks involves challenges such as the periodic replacement of batteries or energy sources in remote locations that are often inaccessible. Therefore, onboard energy harvesting solutions can provide a viable alternative. Experimental energy harvesting from fluid flow, specifically from air flow, is typically restricted to a rotor and stator design or a model that strikes a piezoelectric. On the other hand, energy harvesting from mechanical vibrations routinely uses the linear motion of a magnet passing through a coil or vibrating piezoelectric elements. In this paper, we propose a novel V-twin harvester design that converts wind energy from a rotational input into the linear motion of a magnet inside a coil via a crank-slider mechanism. This design allows for high performance with a smoother voltage output when compared to a reference rotor/stator harvester design or piezoelectric method. At 0.5 Hz, a single crank-slider generated a voltage of 0.176... [more]

Keywords: evolutionary algorithms, finite element analysis, Optimization, power transformers, superconductors
There were many promising superconducting materials discovered in the last decades that can significantly increase the efficiency of large power transformers. However, these large machines are generally custom-made and tailored to the given application. During the design process the most economical design should be selected from thousands of applicable solutions in a short design period. Due to the nonlinearity of the task, the cost-optimal transformer design, which has the smallest costs during the transformers’ planned lifetime, is usually not the design with the highest efficiency. Due to the topic’s importance, many simplified transformer models were published in the literature to resolve this problem. However, only a few papers considered this preliminary design optimization problem in the case of superconducting transformers and none of them made a comparison with a validated conventional transformer optimization model. This paper proposes a novel FEM-based two-winding transforme... [more]

Increasing environmental pollution is driving an increase in the production and use of biofuels. The cost price of biodiesel could be reduced by using low-quality oilseeds unfit for human consumption and by applying the simultaneous oil extraction and transesterification process, avoiding the oil pressure stage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the enzymatic biofuel production process (in situ) by using rapeseed with high oil acidity for simultaneous oil extraction and transesterification with a mixture of butanol and mineral diesel fuel. The investigation of the in situ process was performed using a mixture of butanol and mineral diesel and the most effective biocatalyst Lipozyme TL IM was selected. The novelty of this paper consists of the fact that mineral diesel was used as the oil extractant, and the amount chosen was such that, at the end, a mixture of fuel with a ratio 9:1 of mineral diesel to biodiesel was be produced. Keywords: Genetic Algorithm, Optimization, overcurrent relay, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, sources integration, time delay setting
With the gradual increase in load demand due to population and economic growth, integrating renewable energy sources (RES) into the grid represents a solution for meeting load demand. However, integrating RES might change the power system type from radial to non-radial, where the current can flow forward and backward. Consequently, power system analysis methods must be updated. The impact on power systems includes changes in the load flow affecting the voltage level, equipment sizing, operating modes, and power system protection. Conventional power system protection methods must be updated, as RES integration will change the power flow results and the short circuit levels in the power system. With an RES contribution to short circuit, existing settings might experience missed coordination which will result in unnecessary tripping. This paper considers the impact of integrating renewable energy sources into power system protection on overcurrent time delay settings. A new method to upgr... [more]
