An Optimal Solution for Smooth and Non-Smooth Cost Functions-Based Economic Dispatch Problem
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: chaotic search, economic dispatch, inertia weight, Particle Swarm Optimization
A modified particle swarm optimization and incorporated chaotic search to solve economic dispatch problems for smooth and non-smooth cost functions, considering prohibited operating zones and valve-point effects is proposed in this paper. An inertia weight modification of particle swarm optimization is introduced to enhance algorithm performance and generate optimal solutions with stable solution accuracy and offers faster convergence characteristic. Moreover, an incorporation of chaotic search, called logistic map, is used to increase the global searching capability. To demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm compared to the several existing methods in the literature, five systems with different criteria are verified. The results show the excellent performance of the proposed method to solve economic dispatch problems.

Multi-Objective Optimization of the Gate Driver Parameters in a SiC-Based DC-DC Converter for Electric Vehicles
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: DC-DC converter, efficiency, electric vehicles, electromagnetic interference (EMI), gate driver design, multi-objective optimization, silicon carbide (SiC)
DC-DC converters are being used for power management and battery charging in electric vehicles (EVs). To further the role of EVs in the market, more efficient power electronic converters are needed. Wide band gap (WBG) devices such as silicon carbide (SiC) provide higher frequency and lower power loss, however, their high di/dt and dv/dt transients result in higher electromagnetic interference (EMI). On the other hand, some gate driver parameters such as gate resistor ( R G ) have a contradictory effect on efficiency ( η ) and EMI. The idea of this paper is to investigate the values of these parameters using a multi-objective optimization method to optimize η and EMI at the same time. To this aim, first, the effect of high and low side R G on η and EMI in the half-bridge configuration is studied. Then, the objective functions of the optimization problem are obtained using a numerical regression method on the basis of the experimental tests. Then, the v... [more]

A Hybrid Optimization Approach for Autonomy Enhancement of Nearly-Zero-Energy Buildings Based on Battery Performance and Artificial Neural Networks
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: artificial neural networks, building energy optimization, building integrated photovoltaics, electrical energy storage, Genetic Algorithm, linear programming, nearly zero energy buildings
Reducing the primary energy consumption in buildings and simultaneously increasing self-consumption from renewable energy sources in nearly-zero-energy buildings, as per the 2010/31/EU directive, is crucial nowadays. This work solved the problem of nearly zeroing the net grid electrical energy in buildings in real time. This target was achieved using linear programming (LP)—a convex optimization technique leading to global solutions—to optimally decide the daily charging or discharging (dispatch) of the energy storage in an adaptive manner, in real time, and hence control and minimize both the import and export grid energies. LP was assisted by equally powerful methods, such as artificial neural networks (ANN) for forecasting the building’s load demand and photovoltaic (PV) on a 24 hour basis, and genetic algorithm (GA)—a heuristic optimization technique—for driving the optimum dispatch. Moreover, to address the non-linear nature of the battery and model the energy dispatch in a more r... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization and wind power, pitch angle, proportional–integral–derivative, wind turbine
The production of maximum wind energy requires controlling various parts of medium to large-scale wind turbines (WTs). This paper presents a robust pitch angle control system for the rated wind turbine power at a wide range of simulated wind speeds by means of a proportional−integral−derivative (PID) controller. In addition, ant colony optimization (ACO), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and classical Ziegler−Nichols (Z-N) algorithms have been used for tuning the PID controller parameters to obtain within rated stable output power of WTs from fluctuating wind speeds. The proposed system is simulated under fast wind speed variation, and its results are compared with those of the PID-ZN controller and PID-PSO to verify its effeteness. The proposed approach contains several benefits including simple implementation, as well as tolerance of turbine parameters and several nonparametric uncertainties. Robust control of the generator output power with wind-speed variations can also be consid... [more]

Energy and Force Optimization of a Network of Novel Electromagnetic Soft Actuators
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: design optimization, electromagnetic actuator, soft magnet
This paper discusses how to optimally design polygonal profiles of Electromagnetic Soft Actuators (ESAs) to be used in a network to achieve maximum output force with minimum energy consumption. The soft actuators work based on operating principle of solenoids but are made of intrinsically soft materials. It was, previously, confirmed that by miniaturizing the size, the amount of output force decreases for a single ESA however, by the ratio of force to volume increases. Therefore, networking small sized ESAs, would increase the output force. Initially, ESAs were made with circular cross-section profiles. However, we prove here that the shape of the cross-section profile can affect the output force. A polygonal shape with fewer sides would result in higher output force for a single ESA. However, with a network of ESAs, another parameter, packing density, plays an important role in the output force. Our optimization results suggest that even though triangular cross-section profiles lead t... [more]

March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: distributed energy resources, distribution system, extremum seeking control, Particle Swarm Optimization, power hardware-in-the-loop, reactive power support, state estimation, volt–VAR, voltage regulation
Grid operators are now considering using distributed energy resources (DERs) to provide distribution voltage regulation rather than installing costly voltage regulation hardware. DER devices include multiple adjustable reactive power control functions, so grid operators have the difficult decision of selecting the best operating mode and settings for the DER. In this work, we develop a novel state estimation-based particle swarm optimization (PSO) for distribution voltage regulation using DER-reactive power setpoints and establish a methodology to validate and compare it against alternative DER control technologies (volt−VAR (VV), extremum seeking control (ESC)) in increasingly higher fidelity environments. Distribution system real-time simulations with virtualized and power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL)-interfaced DER equipment were run to evaluate the implementations and select the best voltage regulation technique. Each method improved the distribution system voltage profile; VV did n... [more]

Thermo-Hydraulic Performance of Solar Air Collectors with Artificially Roughened Absorbers: A Comparative Review of Semi-Empirical Models
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: absorber, artificial roughness, Optimization, solar air heating
Due to the poor thermal characteristics of the air, the absorber roughness of solar air collectors is commonly artificially increased in order to enhance the heat transfer to the air stream. However, this is also accompanied by an undesirable increase in the pumping power due to increased friction losses. As a result, several authors have experimentally investigated several ways of maximizing the heat transfer while minimizing the friction losses of different absorbers, resulting in the development of semi-empirical functions relating the Nusselt number (a measure of heat transfer) and the friction factor (a measure of friction losses) to the Reynolds number and the roughness parameters considered for each absorber. The present paper reviews, considering the publications from the last ten years, these semi-empirical functions. Moreover, the optimum roughness parameters and operating conditions of the absorbers were estimated by finding the maximum values of two performance parameters (... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: distributed energy resource, interval optimization, operation optimization, optimal design, uncertainty
Distributed energy resource (DER) systems have elicited increasing attention and applications because of their excellent economic and environmental performance. However, uncertainties exist in such systems, preventing their potential advantages to be realized. In this study, an interval optimization-based model for the optimal design of DER systems is proposed, considering uncertainties in energy prices, renewable energy intensity, and load demands. Uncertainties are described as interval numbers, and the uncertain optimization model is transformed into a deterministic optimization problem using the order relationship and probability degree of interval numbers. The proposed model is applied to a typical hospital in Lianyungang, China, and its effectiveness is verified. One deterministic case and three uncertain cases are designed. The effects of uncertainties on system configuration and economic performance are also analyzed, and the optimal operation strategy under the three uncertain... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: constructal design, metallic contact, solar cell, structure
Sunlight is a natural resource that can be harnessed by the photovoltaic conversion of sunlight into electricity-utilizing solar cells. The production of most common solar cells consists of a homojunction of a p-type and n-type silicon. The p—n junction is realized by the diffusion of impurities through one surface of the wafer. Silicon wafers have a typical dimension of 156 × 156 mm2 and a thickness of 0.15−0.2 mm. Groups of 50−100 solar cells are electrically connected and encapsulated to form a module. The required area for interconnection does not contribute to power generation, and the performance of larger area devices usually suffers from higher resistive losses. In the present work, a theoretical model of the geometric arrangement of the top contact metallic electrodes branched network in a photovoltaic cell is developed. The network structure of the electrodes is obtained from applying the constructal design methodology by the minimization of the overall resistance. As a resul... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: distributed generation, mixed-integer nonlinear programming, OLTC (On Load Tap Changer), quadratic programming, Volt/Var optimization
In this paper, the VVO (Volt/Var optimization) is proposed using simplified linear equations. For fast computation, the characteristics of voltage control devices in a distribution system are expressed as a simplified linear equation. The voltage control devices are classified according to the characteristics of voltage control and represented as the simplified linear equation. The estimated voltage of distribution networks is represented by the sum of the simplified linear equations for the voltage control devices using the superposition principle. The voltage variation by the reactive power of distributed generations (DGs) can be expressed as the matrix of reactance. The voltage variation of tap changing devices can be linearized into the control area factor. The voltage variation by capacitor banks can also be expressed as the matrix of reactance. The voltage equations expressed as simplified linear equations are formulated by quadratic programming (QP). The variables of voltage con... [more]

Subject: Optimization
Keywords: block bidding market, demand response, distributed iteration, non-cooperative game, supply function
With the reform of electricity markets, demand response (DR) plays an important role in providing flexibility to the markets. Block bidding market is a new market mode, which is based on the concept of “the same quality, the same price”. The mechanism has great effects in reducing start-stop related costs. In this paper, we propose a double-sided non-cooperative game model in block bidding markets with a DR program. The model combines the advantages of block bidding and the simplicity of hourly bidding. In the model, one side is the non-cooperative game of supply-side power firms, and we propose a novel supply function bidding model based on block duration and load capacity to maximize each firm’s profit. The other side is the demand-side different types of customers, and we propose a DR model that combines hourly-various prices with the block bidding mechanism to maximize each customer’s payoff. Asymmetric Loss Functions for Contract Capacity Optimization
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: asymmetric loss functions, contract capacity, long short-term memory
For high-voltage and extra-high-voltage consumers, the electricity cost depends not only on the power consumed but also on the contract capacity. For the same amount of power consumed, the smaller the difference between the contract capacity and the power consumed, the smaller the electricity cost. Thus, predicting the future power demand for setting the contract capacity is of great economic interest. In the literature, most works predict the future power demand based on a symmetric loss function, such as mean squared error. However, the electricity pricing structure is asymmetric to the under- and overestimation of the actual power demand. In this work, we proposed several loss functions derived from the asymmetric electricity pricing structure. We experimented with the Long Short-Term Memory neural network with these loss functions using a real dataset from a large manufacturing company in the electronics industry in Taiwan. The results show that the proposed asymmetric loss functio... [more]

A New Methodology to Obtain a Feasible Thermal Operation in Power Systems in a Medium-Term Horizon
March 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electricity markets, feasible operation, medium-term representation, optimization models, power systems, thermal generation, unit commitment
Nowadays, electricity market paradigms are constantly changing. On the one hand, the deployment of non-dispatchable renewable energy sources is bringing out the necessity of representing hourly dynamics in medium-term fundamental models. On the other, the promotion of new interconnection capacity and the integration of markets (as is the case of the European market) makes necessary the simultaneous modeling of multiple electricity systems. Thus, the large size of power markets, together with the consideration of uncertainty in some inputs, make it computationally intractable to work rigorously on an hourly detailed time span. Temporal aggregation, integer programming relaxation or less accurate generation modeling are usually employed to obtain reasonable computation times. However, the application of these techniques often leads to infeasible or suboptimal operational outputs. This paper proposes a new soft-linking methodology to meet reliable results from medium-term models, such as... [more]
