Teng Cao, Huajun Gong, Bing Han
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: attitude control, fault-tolerant control, learning observer, predefined-time stability, spacecraft
The predefined-time tracking problem of spacecraft attitude systems with loss of actuator effectiveness and lumped disturbance including the external disturbance and system uncertainty is studied. In order to obtain the estimation of the actuator efficiency factor more quickly and accurately, a robust learning observer is designed. Based on the fault reconstruction information of the learning observer and the predefined-time stability lemma, a predefined-time tracking fault-tolerant control scheme is proposed for the faulty spacecraft attitude system. The stability of the learning observer and the whole control system is verified by the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed scheme are illustrated by simulation results including comparisons with existing works.

Keywords: deep learning, fault diagnosis, fluid components, steel surface, YOLOV5
Steel is an important raw material of fluid components. The technological level limitation leads to the surface faults of the steel, thus the key to improving fluid components quality is to diagnose the faults in steel production. The complex shape and small size of steel surface faults result in the low accuracy of the diagnosis, and the large size of the network leads to poor real-time performance. Therefore, aiming at the problems, an improved YOLOV5 is proposed. Firstly, to reduce the feature information loss, coordinate attention is used to improve YOLOV5, thus the diagnosis ability can be improved. Secondly, to further reduce the loss, a new connection is constructed in YOLOV5, and the detection ability can also be further improved. Thirdly, to improve the real-time performance of the fault diagnosis, YOLOV5 is improved by the lightweight method ShuffleNetV2, and its size can be reduced. Lastly, to further improve the accuracy, the cosine annealing with warm restarts algorithm is... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aluminium, chromium, nickel, oxygen control, powder, pyrometallurgy, welding
Unconstrained metal powders of chromium and nickel, in combination with aluminium, were used in the submerged arc welding (SAW) process to simplify weld metal alloying. Unconstrained metal powders refer to non-alloyed metal powders that are not constrained in tubular wire, such as fluxed-cored and metal-cored wire. Aluminium powder is used to control the oxygen potential at the molten flux−weld pool interface. The results presented here show that the addition of aluminium powder to the weld metal enhances Cr and Ni yields to 89% for Cr and 91% for Ni, compared to lower values reported in pre-alloyed powder application. Alloying of the carbon steel in the base plate and weld wire combination was achieved at 6.0% Cr, 6.2% Ni, and 4.5% Al, with the weld metal oxygen controlled to 162 ppm O. Thermodynamic analysis was applied to investigate the likely gas reactions in the arc cavity emanating from the chemical interaction between Cr, Ni, and Al. The effects of gas-based chemical reactions... [more]

Keywords: Arduino, genome-scale metabolic model, Industry 4.0, Pharma 4.0, Schizochytrium, soft sensor
sp. is a microorganism cultured for producing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Genome-scale metabolic modeling (GEM) is a promising technique for describing gen-protein-reactions in cells, but with still limited industrial application due to its complexity and high computation requirements. In this work, we simplified GEM results regarding the relationship between the specific oxygen uptake rate (−rO2), the specific growth rate (µ), and the rate of lipid synthesis (rL) using an evolutionary algorithm for developing a model that can be used by a soft sensor for fermentation monitoring. The soft sensor estimated the concentration of active biomass (X), glutamate (N), lipids (L), and DHA in a Schizochytrium sp. fermentation using the dissolved oxygen tension (DO) and the oxygen mass transfer coefficient (kLa) as online input variables. The soft sensor model described the biomass concentration response of four reported experiments characterized by different kLa values. The average range normali... [more]

February 20, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: compound fault diagnosis, CYCBD, RLMD, rolling-element bearing, SSA
Aiming at the problem that it is difficult to separate and extract the composite fault features of rolling-element bearings, a composite fault diagnosis method combining robust local mean decomposition (RLMD), sparrow search algorithm (SSA), maximum second-order cyclostationarity blind deconvolution (CYCBD), is proposed. First, the RLMD is used to decompose the product function of the signal, and the two indicators, the excess and the correlation coefficient are then used as evaluation criteria to select the appropriate components for reconstruction. The reconstructed signal is then inputted into the SSA-optimized CYCBD algorithm, by specifying the objective function parameter which separates the faults and obtains multiple single fault signals with optimal noise reduction. Finally, envelope demodulation analysis is used for the multiple single fault signals, to obtain the characteristic frequencies of the corresponding faults, so as to complete the fault separation and feature extract... Keywords: imbibition displacement, natural fractures, nuclear magnetic resonance, tight sandstone reservoirs
“Fracture network stimulation + imbibition replacement” is a new attempt to effectively develop tight sandstone reservoirs, and the fractures provide conditions for fluid imbibition replacement. On the basis of nuclear magnetic resonance and pseudo-color processing technology, combined with the imbibition experiments, this paper studies the imbibition process of fractured tight sandstone reservoirs, clarifies the effect of each level of pore-throat on imbibition, and realizes the visualization of the imbibition process. The results show that, in fractured tight sandstone reservoirs, the fluid displacement occurs in fractures first, followed by pore-throat. Most of the imbibition recovery is contributed by the macropore, the contribution of the mesopore to imbibition recovery is very weak, and the contributions of the micropore and the pinhole are even less. In the process of imbibition, capillary force and gravitational force are key parameters controlling fluid flow in pores and fract... [more]

Keywords: continuous wavelet transform, convolutional neural network, diesel engine fault diagnosis, support vector machine, variational mode decomposition
The safe operation of diesel engines performs a vital function in industrial production and life. Because diesel engines often work in harsh environmental conditions, they are prone to failure. Therefore, this paper proposes a fault analysis method based on a combination of optimized variational mode decomposition (VMD) and improved convolutional neural networks (CNN) to address the necessary need for preventive maintenance of diesel engines. The authentic vibration sign is first decomposed by using the (VMD) algorithm, then the greatest range of decomposition layers is decided by using scattering entropy and the useful components are preferentially chosen for reconstruction. The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) records preprocessing method is then delivered to radically change the noise-reduced vibration sign into a time-frequency map, which is fed into the CNN for model coaching and extraction of fault features. Finally, fault classification is realized by support vector machine (S... [more]

February 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fuzzy neural network, omnidirectional mobile robot, predefined-time stability, trajectory tracking
In this paper, a fuzzy neural network based predefined-time trajectory tracking control method is proposed for the tracking problem of omnidirectional mobile robots (FM-OMR) with uncertainties. Considering the requirement of tracking error convergence time, a position tracking controller based on predefined-time stability is proposed. Compared with the traditional position tracking control method, the minimum upper bound of the convergence time can be explicitly set. In order to obtain more accurate angular velocity tracking, the inner loop controller combines Type 1 fuzzy neural network (T1FNN) to estimate the uncertainty. In addition, considering the problem of feedback channel noise, a Kalman filter combining velocity and position information is proposed. Finally, the simulation results verify the effectiveness of this method.

Keywords: CVA, Fault Detection, nonlinear dynamic process, PCA
Most industrial systems today are nonlinear and dynamic. Traditional fault detection techniques show their limits because they can hardly extract both nonlinear and dynamic features simultaneously. Canonical variate analysis (CVA) shows its excellent monitoring performance in fault detection for dynamic processes but is not applicable to nonlinear processes. Inspired by the CVA method, a novel nonlinear dynamic process monitoring method, namely, the “canonical variate kernel analysis” (CVKA), is proposed in this work. The way to extract nonlinear features is different from a traditional kernel canonical variate analysis (KCVA). In a sequential structure, the new approach firstly extracts the linear dynamic features from the data through the CVA method, followed by a kernel principal component analysis to extract nonlinear features from the CVA residual space. The new CVKA method is then applied to a TE process case study, proving the excellent performance of CVKA compared to other comm... [more]

Taking a direct-drive volume control (DDVC) electro-hydraulic servo system as the research object and aiming at the problems of the servo motor torque fluctuation, high-precision system pressure control, and dynamic response of the system, based on traditional motor direct torque control (DTC), a motor direct torque control method based on a sliding-mode variable structure is proposed to control the system pressure. The motor torque loop is part of the inner control loop and has a rapid dynamic response speed, resulting in higher pressure control accuracy. A nonlinear mathematical model was established for the DDVC electro-hydraulic servo system. The switch meter hysteresis controller in the traditional DTC system was replaced with space vector pulse-width modulation technology. Then, the PID control module in space vector modulation technology was replaced with high-order sliding-mode variable-structure control. Keywords: brushless DC motor, fault detection and isolation, permanent motors
A brushless direct current (BLDC) motor is a type of permanent magnet machine that is highly efficient and powerful and requires occasional maintenance. Thanks to these fortunate characteristics, this type of motor has various applications in high-tech industries. However, since BLDC motors are often required to operate at high-speed rotations and under extreme conditions, temperature overshoots can appear during operation, provoking damage to the windings. The purpose of this review is to present the results of a recent investigation and recollection of different methods used for the diagnosis of electrical faults in the stator, such as turn-to-turn short circuits, coil-to-coil short circuits, phase-to-phase short circuits and phase open circuits. In particular, this review presents an analysis of the available diagnosis methods according to the type of fault, the method or technique used for the diagnosis, the evaluated physical variables and the context in which the methods were eva... Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, driving behavior, GDI vehicles, nitrogen oxides, particulate number, real-world emissions
The analysis of real-world emissions is necessary to reduce the emissions of vehicles during on-road driving. In this paper, the matrix of gasoline direct injection passenger cars is applied to analyze the real-world emissions. The results show that high acceleration and high speed conditions are major conditions for the particulate number emissions, and the particulate number emissions are positively correlated with torque and throttle opening. The catalyst temperature and saturation are important factors that affect nitrogen oxide emission. The nitrogen oxide emissions of low speed and low torque conditions cannot be ignored in real-world driving. The carbon dioxide emissions are positively correlated with acceleration, torque and throttle opening. Once the vehicles are in the acceleration condition, the carbon dioxide emissions increase rapidly. The vehicles with higher average emission factors are more susceptible to driving behaviors, and the differences in the emission factors ar... [more]

Keywords: gravitational surface vortex, hydrodynamic characteristics, hydropower energy conversion, hydropower station, vortex-induced vibration
The energy-conversion stability of hydropower is critical to satisfy the growing demand for electricity. In low-head hydropower plants, a gravitational surface vortex is easily generated, which causes irregular shock vibrations that damage turbine performance and input-flow stability. The gravitational surface vortex is a complex fluid dynamic problem with high nonlinear features. Here, we thoroughly investigate its essential hydrodynamic properties, such as Ekman layer transport, heat/mass transfer, pressure pulsation, and vortex-induced vibration, and we note some significant scientific issues as well as future research directions and opportunities. Our findings show that the turbulent Ekman layer analytical solution and vortex multi-scale modeling technology, the working condition of the vortex across the scale heat/mass transfer mechanism, the high-precision measurement technology for high-speed turbulent vortexes, and the gas−liquid−solid three-phase vortex dynamics model are the... Bottled-beverage production systems require considerable machinery and sophisticated control systems. A malfunction in the production system can result in machine stoppages, thereby decreasing productivity and resulting in the production output not meeting the required target. Therefore, the problem of frequent stoppages of the production system must be resolved. The ‘Fast Restart Function’ is a proposed feature that can help reduce machine downtime by decreasing the time required for the product to drain from the conveyor. In this study, using this strategy, the investigated manufacturing system’s efficiency increased from 86.81% to 90.29%, enabling an increase in the average production capacity by 27,187 bottles per day, i.e., a 3.48 percent increment of the daily capacity. When employed in inefficient production systems or systems facing frequent shutdowns, this system is of considerable value for mitigating production stoppages.

Keywords: cell expansion, cell-based therapies, lactate, real-time model predictive control
Providing a cost-efficient feeding strategy for cell expansion processes remains a challenging task due to, among other factors, donor variability. The current method to use a fixed medium replacement strategy for all cell batches results often in either over- or underfeeding these cells. In order to take into account the individual needs of the cells, a model predictive controller was developed in this work. Reference experiments were performed by expanding human periosteum derived progenitor cells (hPDCs) in tissue flasks to acquire reference data. With these data, a time-variant prediction model was identified to describe the relation between the accumulated medium replaced as the control input and the accumulated lactate produced as the process output. Several forecast methods to predict the cell growth process were designed using multiple collected datasets by applying transfer function models or machine learning. The first controller experiment was performed using the accumulated... [more]

Keywords: advanced sliding mode control (ASMC), chattering problem, grey-Markov model (GMM), single-phase SPWM inverter
This paper presents a robust intelligent tracking-control technique which is subsequently applied to single-phase SPWM inverters. The proposed technique mixes advanced sliding mode control (ASMC) with grey-Markov model (GMM). The advanced sliding mode control allows the system state to converge quickly to the origin in a limited amount of time. Unfortunately, a chattering problem frequently occurs when the inverter suffers drastically from highly nonlinear or internal parameters changes. The large power losses and high harmonic distortion emerge in the inverter output. The role that the grey-Markov model plays is to reduce the chattering of the ASMC during system uncertainty overestimation, or to reduce the steady-state error caused by underestimation of system uncertainty. In conjunction with the GMM and the ASMC, fast transient response, low distortion of the sinusoidal output-voltage and reduced chattering can be obtained. Simulation results of the proposed single-phase SPWM inverte... [more]
Energy Recovery for the Main and Auxiliary Sources of Electric Vehicles

February 17, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: DC/DC converter, electric vehicle, electrical circuit, energy recovery, main and auxiliary sources
Based on the traditional regenerative braking electrical circuit, a novel energy recovery system for the main and auxiliary sources of electric vehicles (EVs) has been developed to improve their energy efficiency. The electrical circuit topology is presented in detail. During regenerative braking, the recovered mechanical energy is stored in both the main source and the auxiliary source at the same time. The mathematical model of the proposed system is derived step by step. Combining the merits and defects of H₂ optimal control and H∞ robust control, a H₂/H∞ controller is designed to guarantee both the system performance and robust stability. The perfect match between the simulated and experimental results validates the notion that the proposed novel energy recovery system is both feasible and effective, as more energy is recovered than that with the traditional energy recovery systems, in which recovered energy is stored only in the main source.

Keywords: condition monitoring, energy conversion systems, fault diagnosis, fault prognosis, resilient control, wind turbine
Wind energy is contributing to more and more portions in the world energy market. However, one deterrent to even greater investment in wind energy is the considerable failure rate of turbines. In particular, large wind turbines are expensive, with less tolerance for system performance degradations, unscheduled system shut downs, and even system damages caused by various malfunctions or faults occurring in system components such as rotor blades, hydraulic systems, generator, electronic control units, electric systems, sensors, and so forth. As a result, there is a high demand to improve the operation reliability, availability, and productivity of wind turbine systems. It is thus paramount to detect and identify any kinds of abnormalities as early as possible, predict potential faults and the remaining useful life of the components, and implement resilient control and management for minimizing performance degradation and economic cost, and avoiding dangerous situations. Keywords: micro refinery, passive cooling, process control
A micro refinery unit at Polytechnique Montreal converts natural gas to diesel range fuel as the main product in two high pressure and high temperature reacting units. First, it transforms methane to syngas by catalytic partial oxidation (CPOX) at 20 bar and 800⁰C. Then, it produces the medium-chain hydro-carbons from syngas by Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reaction at 20 bar and 300⁰C.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of passive intercooling on the performance and robustness of a pre-set control configuration for this sequence of interconnected chemical reactors. We simulate the whole process in Aspen Plus v8.4 and first design a PI temperature controller for the Fischer-Tropsch re-actor in Aspen Plus Dynamics. As the FT process is highly exothermic, the controller is essential to properly remove the heat generated in the reactor. Despite being feasible in simulations, the closed-loop results suffer from many shortcomings, notably with respect to process constraints.

Keywords: bypass control, heat exchangers, heat-transfer control, process control, process design, process dynamics, temperature control
In heat exchangers with bypassing, a fraction of the flowrate of one fluid (typically the one whose temperature needs to be controlled tightly) bypasses the exchanger and mixes right after the exchanger outlet with the fraction flowing through the exchanger. The advantages of this configuration are long known. Among them, the most significant is that it can improve heat-transfer control because the temperature dynamics is significantly faster than in a standard heat-exchanger configuration. Additionally, it can increase the rangeability of the process wherein the heat exchanger operates. Existing rules of thumb do not provide univocal indications for assigning the design bypass flowrate. In this study, using a simple graphical representation of steady-state heat and mass balances originally proposed for conventional heat-exchanger design, we clarify why and under which design conditions bypass control can be effective. Increased rangeability results from the fact that the heat-exchange... [more]

Thin coal seam mining is a development direction to solve the problem of energy supply at this stage, which cannot be realized by small working space, low automation, and drilling deviation. In this paper, a nonlinear adaptive backstepping controller based on a disturbance observer is proposed and used on a coal auger for position tracking control to achieve directional drilling. Firstly, a nonlinear dynamic model for the deflection control mechanism is built with the consideration of parameter uncertainties and external disturbances. Furthermore, a disturbance observer is designed to estimate the system compound disturbance and a nonlinear adaptive backstepping controller was proposed to compensate the system compound disturbance. The upper bound of the compound disturbance, which can effectively reduce the chattering in the directional control process, cannot be obtained easily. A... [more]

In steam turbine control and actuation, the steam control valve plays a key role in operability and reliability. The electrohydraulic regulating system for the steam control valve, usually called the servomotor, needs to be reliable and high performing under nonlinear excitation interference in actual conditions. Currently, electrohydraulic servo valve control technology is widely used in servomotors. Although this technology has good control performance, it still has some technical defects, such as poor antipollution ability, low energy efficiency, large volume size, and limited installation space. Aiming at the abovementioned technical shortcomings of electrohydraulic servo valve control technology, a servomotor-pump-hydraulic cylinder volume control scheme is proposed in this paper, forming a pump-controlled servomotor for the steam control valve. By analyzing the working principle of the pump-controlled servomotor position control in the steam control valve, the mathematical model... [more]

Keywords: biogas, biotrickling filter, control strategies, feedback control, H2S removal, process modeling
Biotrickling filters are one of the most widely used biological technologies to perform biogas desulfurization. Their industrial application has been hampered due to the difficulty to achieve a robust and reliable operation of this bioreactor. Specifically, biotrickling filters process performance is affected mostly by fluctuations in the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) loading rate due to changes in the gas inlet concentration or in the volumetric gas flowrate. The process can be controlled by means of the regulation of the air flowrate (AFR) to control the oxygen (O2) gas outlet concentration ([O2]out) and the trickling liquid velocity (TLV) to control the H2S gas outlet concentration ([H2S]out). In this work, efforts were placed towards the understanding and development of control strategies in biological H2S removal in a biotrickling filter under aerobic conditions. Classical proportional and proportional-integral feedback controllers were applied in a model of an aerobic biotrickling filte... [more]
