Optimization and Model Validation of Operation Control Strategies for a Novel Dual-Motor Coupling-Propulsion Pure Electric Vehicle
June 23, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: coupling-propulsion powertrain, dual-motor pure electric vehicle, mode division, mode switch, power distribution
The strict operational condition of driving motors for vehicles propels the development of more complicated configurations in pure electric vehicles (PEVs). Multi-power-source powertrain configurations are one of the efficient technologies to reduce the manufacturing difficulty of driving motors. However, most of the existing studies are predominantly focused on optimal designs of powertrains and power distribution between the engine and motor of hybrid electric vehicles, which are not appropriate for PEVs. This paper proposes a novel dual-motor coupling-propulsion powertrain system that improves the dynamic and economic performance of the powertrain system in PEVs. The proposed powertrain system can realize both the single-motor driving mode and dual-motor coupling driving mode. The driving modes are divided and a power distribution strategy for the different driving modes based on an optimal system efficiency rule is employed, which enhances the performance of the proposed system. A Novel Single-Phase Reactive Current Detection Algorithm Based on Fast Orthogonal Signal Generator and Enhanced Moving Average Filter
June 23, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: enhanced MAF, OSG, reactive current detection, single-phase STATCOM
This paper developed a novel single-phase reactive current detection algorithm based on fast orthogonal signal generator (OSG) and enhanced moving average filter (MAF), overcoming the limitation of conventional schemes in detection speed, computation burden and noise/harmonic immunity. A fast and accurate OSG scheme is introduced first, which can remarkably improve the precision and response speed of the developed detection scheme. In d-q frame, the enhanced MAF is developed and its optimal design principle is also presented, which can sufficiently eliminate the noise and harmonics while achieve the possible shortest response time, particularly in the case of selective harmonics cancellation. Finally, high-performance single-phase STATCOM control is realized utilizing the proposed method. Experiments reveal that the proposed detection scheme exhibits fast speed, high precision as well as noise/harmonics immunity, providing satisfactory control performances.

Exploring the Potential of Camber Control to Improve Vehicles’ Energy Efficiency during Cornering
June 23, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: camber, cornering, energy saving, Magic Formula
Actively controlling the camber angle to improve energy efficiency has recently gained interest due to the importance of reducing energy consumption and the driveline electrification trend that makes cost-efficient implementation of actuators possible. To analyse how much energy that can be saved with camber control, the effect of changing the camber angles on the forces and moments of the tyre under different driving conditions should be considered. In this paper, Magic Formula tyre models for combined slip and camber are used for simulation of energy analysis. The components of power loss during cornering are formulated and used to explain the influence that camber angles have on the power loss. For the studied driving paths and the assumed driver model, the simulation results show that active camber control can have considerable influence on power loss during cornering. Different combinations of camber angles are simulated, and a camber control algorithm is proposed and verified in... [more]

Improved Modulated Carrier Controlled PFC Boost Converter Using Charge Current Sensing Method
June 23, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ac-dc power converters, modulated carrier control, power conversion, power factor correction (PFC)
An improved modulated carrier control (MCC) method is proposed to offer high power factor (PF) and low total harmonic distortion (THD) at a wide input voltage range and load variation. The conventional MCC method not only requires a multiplier and divider, but also is hard to be implemented with a micro controller unit without a high frequency oscillator. To overcome the problem and maintain the advantages of the conventional MCC method, the proposed MCC method adopts a current integrator, an output voltage amplifier, a zero-current duration (ZCD) demodulator of the boost inductor, and a carrier generator. Thus, it can remove a multiplier and well, as it allows for being operable with a general micro control unit. This paper presents an operation principle of the proposed control method. To verify the proposed control method, experimental results with 400 W PFC boost converter is demonstrated.

Analysis and Application of the Sliding Mode Control Approach in the Variable-Wind Speed Conversion System for the Utility of Grid Connection
June 23, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct power control (DPC), low voltage ride-through (LVRT), permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG), sliding mode control (SMC), space vector modulation (SVM), wind energy conversion system (WECS)
The greatest requirement for Tunisian grid connections is low voltage ride through (LVRT). In fact, the network voltage generally results in a discrepancy between the generated active power and that which is delivered. This study was carried out to enhance the quality of the power injected into the grid by means of LVRT capability in Tunisian wind turbines using a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) controlled by the sliding mode control (SMC) approach based on direct power control (DPC) using space vector modulation (SVM). This approach was applied in order to control the active and reactive powers produced by the wind energy conversion system (WECS) and injected into the grid. Results obtained in MATLAB/Simulink simulations showed the efficiency of the introduced control strategy. An implementation in real time, using a dSpace1104 control board, was presented to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed control scheme and its effectiveness under fault conditions.

Primary Frequency Response Enhancement for Future Low Inertia Power Systems Using Hybrid Control Technique
June 23, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: frequency nadir, inertia control, primary frequency control, wind turbine
Maintaining the stability of a conventional power system during under frequency events is partially dominated by a natural behavior called inertial response. Although a variable speed wind turbine (VSWT) is fundamentally deprived from such behavior, it was shown recently that it can virtually emulate this response, hence increasing its output power given to the grid to sustain the power balance. This paper reviews and analyzes the performance of four primary frequency control structures, and provides comparison between these controllers in terms of security indices. The results reflect the superiority of the inertia emulation controller and the droop control type in low and high wind speed respectively. To enhance the system frequency control response and take any inherent advantage of each controller, this paper proposes two novel controllers based on combination (hybridization) strategy between the four controllers. The results show that the combination between the inertia emulation... [more]

The Potential of Fractional Order Distributed MPC Applied to Steam/Water Loop in Large Scale Ships
June 22, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fractional order, large scale ships, Model Predictive Control, multi-input multi-output system, steam power plant
The steam/water loop is a crucial part of a steam power plant. However, satisfying control performance is difficult to obtain due to the frequent disturbance and load fluctuation. A fractional order model predictive control was studied in this paper to improve the control performance of the steam/water loop. Firstly, the dynamic of the steam/water loop was introduced in large-scale ships. Then, the model predictive control with an extended prediction self adaptive controller framework was designed for the steam/water loop with a distributed scheme. Instead of an integer cost function, a fractional order cost function was applied in the model predictive control optimization step. The superiority of the fractional order model predictive control was validated with reference tracking and load fluctuation experiments.

An Autonomous Power-Frequency Control Strategy Based on Load Virtual Synchronous Generator
June 10, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: autonomous power-frequency control strategy, dynamic small-signal model, hybrid AC/DC microgrid, virtual synchronous generator
With the increasing penetration of the hybrid AC/DC microgrid in power systems, an inertia decrease of the microgrid is caused. Many scholars have put forward the concept of a virtual synchronous generator, which enables the converters of the microgrid to possess the characteristics of a synchronous generator, thus providing inertia support for the microgrid. Nevertheless, the problems of active power oscillation and unbalance would be serious when multiple virtual synchronous generators (VSGs) operate in the microgrid. To conquer these problems, a VSG-based autonomous power-frequency control strategy is proposed, which not only independently allocates the power grid capacity according to the load capacity, but also effectively suppresses the active power oscillation. In addition, by establishing a dynamic small-signal model of the microgrid, the dynamic stability of the proposed control strategy in the microgrid is verified, and further reveals the leading role of the VSG and filter i... Experimental Validation of a Cascade Control Strategy for Continuously Perfused Animal Cell Cultures
June 10, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: HEK cells, linearizing control, process control, sliding mode observer, state estimation
This paper is dedicated to the experimental validation of a cascade control strategy for simultaneously regulating the glucose and biomass levels in continuously perfused HEK-293 cell cultures. The inner loop consists of a partial feedback linearization, which requires the estimation of the biomass specific growth rate and glucose uptake rate. This latter task is achieved by sliding mode observers, which do not require a priori process knowledge in the form of a process model. The linearized process is then regulated by the outer loop, including two classical PI controllers with autotuning. The four manipulated variables are a feed flow rate with low glucose concentration, another feed flow with a higher glucose content, a bleed flow, and a perfusion stream. The experimental results demonstrate the ability of the control strategy to reach and regulate the prescribed setpoints. The main advantage of the strategy is that it can be applied in a plug and play manner and shows satisfactory... [more]

May 22, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: least squares regression, model-free control, optimal control, Q-learning, reinforcement learning, ridge regression
In this paper, the Q-learning method for quadratic optimal control problem of discrete-time linear systems is reconsidered. The theoretical results prove that the quadratic optimal controller cannot be solved directly due to the linear correlation of the data sets. The following corollaries have been made: (1) The correlation of data is the key factor in the success for the calculation of quadratic optimal control laws by Q-learning method; (2) The control laws for linear systems cannot be derived directly by the existing Q-learning method; (3) For nonlinear systems, there are some doubts about the data independence of current method. Therefore, it is necessary to discuss the probability of the controllers established by the existing Q-learning method. To solve this problem, based on the ridge regression, an improved model-free Q-learning quadratic optimal control method for discrete-time linear systems is proposed in this paper. Therefore, the computation process can be implemented co... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: hydrolysis, leaching, roasting, scandium, scandium rough concentrate
In this study, a roasting-hydrolysis-acid leaching process is used to extract scandium from the scandium rough concentrate. The scandium rough concentrate containing Sc2O3 of 76.98 g/t was obtained by magnetic separation, gravity separation, and electric separation from Sc-bearing Vi-Ti magnetite tailings in the Panxi area of China. The majority of scandium in scandium rough concentrate mainly occurs in diopside, titanopyroxene, montmorillonite, chlorite, talc, aluminosilicate minerals, and isomorphism. Sodium salt and scandium coarse concentrate are added into the roasting furnace for roasting, which makes the fusion reaction of silicon, aluminum and sodium salt to produce soluble salts such as sodium silicate and sodium metaaluminate. Scandium is further recovered from the hydrolysis residue by acid leaching. Test results show scandium leaching recovery of 95.12% and the acid leaching residue with Sc2O3 content of 8.12 g/t are obtained, while the extraction of scandium is obvious. Th... [more]

Second, a generalized H2/H∞ guaranteed cost state-feedback controller is developed in terms of Lyapunov stability theory. In addition, the Cone Complementarity Linearization (CCL) algorithm is employed to convert the generalized H2/H∞ output-feedback control problem into a finite convex optimization problem (COP) in a linear matrix ineq... A Cooperative Control Scheme for AC/DC Hybrid Autonomous Microgrids
May 18, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC/DC hybrid microgrid, cooperative control, droop control, islanding mode, power sharing
The AC/DC hybrid microgrid (MG) has been widely promoted due to its high flexibility. The capability to operate in islanding mode is an appealing advantage of the MG, and also sets higher requirements for its control system. A droop control strategy is proposed on account of its distinguishing feature of automatic power sharing between distributed generations (DGs), but it introduces some drawbacks. Therefore, distributed cooperative secondary control is introduced as an improvement. In order to optimize the active power sharing in AC/DC hybrid microgrids, a number of cooperative control strategies have been proposed. However, most studies of AC/DC hybrid microgrids have mainly focused on the control of the bidirectional converter, ignoring the effects of secondary control within subnets, which may make a difference to the droop characteristic. This paper extends the cooperative control to AC/DC hybrid microgrids based on normalizing and synthesizing the droop equations, and proposes a... [more]

A Self-Adaptive Damping Control Strategy of Virtual Synchronous Generator to Improve Frequency Stability
May 18, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: damping, frequency stability, self-adaptive control, virtual synchronous generator
In a microgrid, grid-connected inverters, as the interface between the distributed power supply and grid, cannot provide inertia support for the system. The control strategy of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) based on grid-connected inverters can enhance the stability of system frequency. In order to make the frequency response that has a smaller overshoot and a shorter settling time, a self-adaptive damping control strategy based on the relationship between the damping and the maximum frequency deviation for microgrid VSG is presented. The small-signal mathematical model of VSG is established, and the range of the damping coefficient is determined. Finally, simulation experiments are carried out with MATLAB/Simulink, and the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is verified by comparing it with various damping control methods.

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: decoupling networks, lab-scale variable-speed variable-pitch wind turbine, multivariable control, transition region
Wind energy conversion systems are very challenging from the control system viewpoint. The control difficulties are even more challenging when wind turbines are able to operate at variable speed and variable pitch. The contribution of this work is focused on designing a combined controller that significantly alleviates the wind transient loads in the power tracking and power regulation modes as well as in the transition zone. In a previous work, the authors studied the applicability of different multivariable decoupling methodologies. The methodologies were tested in simulation and verified experimentally in a lab-scale wind turbine. It was demonstrated that multivariable control strategies achieve a good closed-loop response within the transition region, where the interaction level is greater. Nevertheless, although such controllers showed an acceptable performance in the power tracking (region II) and power regulation (region IV) zones, appreciable improvement was possible. To this e... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: discrete element method (DEM), optimal speed, SAG mill, sliding mode control
The rotation speed of a mill is an important factor related to its operation and grinding efficiency. Analysis and regulation of the optimal speed under different working conditions can effectively reduce energy loss, improve productivity, and extend the service life of the equipment. On Parameter Stability Region of LADRC for Time-Delay Analysis with a Coupled Tank Application
April 14, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: dual-locus diagram, GA, LADRC, parameter stability region, PLC
The control of time-delay systems is a hot research topic. Ever since the theory of linear active disturbance rejection control (LADRC) was put forward, considerable progress has been made. LADRC shows a good control effect on the control of time-delay systems. The problem about the parameter stability region of LADRC controllers has been seldom discussed, which is very important for practical application. In this study, the dual-locus diagram method, which is used to solve the upper limit of the LADRC controller bandwidth, is studied for both first-order time-delay systems and second-order time-delay systems. The characteristic equation roots distribution is firstly transformed into the problem of finding the frequency of the dual-locus diagram intersection point. To solve the problem for second-order time-delay system LADRC controllers, which is a dual 10-order nonlinear equation, a transformation has been made through Euler’s formula and genetic algorithm (GA) has been adopted to se... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: composition control, DWDC, Kaibel distillation column, PID, process control
Although Kaibel distillation columns are superior to conventional distillation sequences owing to smaller equipment investment and operation cost, they display high nonlinearity and this greatly increases the difficulty of achieving their tight control. To overcome this problem, four decentralized composition control structures, i.e., the CSR/QR, CSR/B, CSD/QR, and CSD/B structures, are proposed and compared based on the control of a Kaibel distillation column fractionating a methanol/ethanol/propanol/butanol quaternary mixture. These four composition control structures all include five composition control loops. While the four of them are employed to maintain the purity of the top, upper sidestream, lower sidestream, and bottom products, the remaining one is employed to minimize the energy consumption of the Kaibel distillation column by maintaining the composition of propanol at the first stage of the prefractionator. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: multi-input and multi-output system, proportional-integral-derivative controller, steam power plant, steam/water loop
In large scale ships, the most used controllers for the steam/water loop are still the proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. However, the tuning rules for the PID parameters are based on empirical knowledge and the performance for the loops is not satisfying. In order to improve the control performance of the steam/water loop, the application of a recently developed PID autotuning method is studied. Firstly, a ‘forbidden region’ on the Nyquist plane can be obtained based on user-defined performance requirements such as robustness or gain margin and phase margin. Secondly, the dynamic of the system can be obtained with a sine test around the operation point. Finally, the PID controller’s parameters can be obtained by locating the frequency response of the controlled system at the edge of the ‘forbidden region’. To verify the effectiveness of the new PID autotuning method, comparisons are presented with other PID autotuning methods, as well as the model predictive control.... [more]
